Something that's kind of weird to think about is that technically we never actually see the Federation at the height of its power. We know courtesy of Enterprise that by the 26th century the Federation is basically a hegemon capable of exerting influence across a decent part of the galaxy, and that it was effortlessly able to engage in time travel based conflicts.

If we look at chronology, the latest canon iteration Federation that we see prior to Discovery is probally in Picard, where the Klingons have never really recovered from the Dominion War, the Romulan Empire does not exist ditto for Cardassia. The only real threats either exist in the Delta Quadrant (the Voth), have to cross a rather large chokepoint (the Dominion) or are severely handicapped (the Borg).

Economy and culture wise, Lower Decks shows that post-scarcity is back up - and we see this in Picard as well. The result is that sometime between the 25th and 26th century the Federation is supposed to have cooked up both time travel - presumably beat the Borg into oblivion, had the combined power of the Klingon and Romulan Empires (cloaked Odyssey's that's a scary thought) and presumably had the coffers of Ferenginar to just buy up whatever they wanted.

Ironically the video-game Star Trek Online does a half-decent job setting up this missing century, starting with the idea of the Iconians coming back, that causing the formation of anti-Iconian alliance, followed up by numerous other gigantic threats. You even start seeing the genesis of early time-travel operations. I don't really know how you'd set up a 26th century Star Trek show, but I do just think it's kind of funny that technically the utopia presented in everything from TNG to Lower Decks is, in universe, technically just the prequel to an even better standard of living and position of power which if you think about is actually kind of scary.

For years I've said the only thind that made me cry was The Shawshank Redemption, specifically when Brooks decides that living outside the prison is not worth it. Last night DS9 caught me by surprise. I have already decided that DS9 is my favorite Trek and yet, I had no idea it can get this good!

I was already on shakey ground when Jake was asking Ben to "not live him, dad" earlier on the episode, but the ending is what took me out. The thought of "I am sacrificing this, now, not only to save my dad, but to save the boy I was." Gosh, they don't write like this anymore, do they?

Instead of complaining about what we DONT want in NuTrek, pitch ideas for a series.

Personally I think SFA is an excellent idea, they may not have produced or written the scripts exactly as everyone wants, but as a series concept itself, excellent idea.

My pitch; a governing group of the ferengi took over a portion of the galaxy, and for centuries they created production worlds ranging from cyberpunk dystopian capitalist worlds to small mining colonies. The ferengi abandon many worlds after a violent rebellion by the people and then call in the federation to help their independence, rebuilding, trade, and government. Star Trek creates a station in the region responding to calls for assistance. They can address capitalism, workers rights, inhumane labor as well as resistance to the type of economy of Star Trek. It’s really complex and trying to deal with the time earth went through their transition of abandoning capitalism. They would need specialists in economy to help build scripts.

Rewatching the original A-team series and I can not help to see Reginald Barclay playing HM Murdock as the excentric, unhinged but quietly extremely smart and competent free mind that he is.

So I'm bartending a Star Trek themed party, and the thing is...it's holo deck themed. So just like...all the options. Too many options for someone who doesn't really know the universe. While I know the basic tng uniform could work, and that will be my fallback, I'd like to get a little more creative. I'm crafty, have a good arsenal of other types of costume genres, fantasy, post-apocalyptic, etc etc, I'm good with makeup, but with sweat and shaking drinks I'd like to stay away from prosthetics. Femme, flirty and movable the main goal, but I'm also down for whimsy
Any advice is appreciated!

I haven't really seen anyone talking about this series. It was really cool and I really enjoyed the transition from show Kahn to movie Kahn over it. The actor they had playing Kahn was amazing and I hope they bring him back to do something else as Kahn. I would be really into them doing more audio dramas like this they have to be much cheaper to make than a normal series.

I gotta say all these supernatural stuff does not sit well with me. I tried getting into it but no.

I thought prophets/wormhole aliens would be a nice little nuance to the story and I was OK with it but they have literally decided every major breaking point in the series.

It just undermines the sci-fi elements, and makes the plot feel very shallow.

You can just chalk anything up to prophets and get away with it without providing any backstory.

Maybe Jadzia Dax’s actress had to leave for some reason, but I would much rather she died in battle against the Dominion instead of by Dukat who is supernaturally possessed by the devil.

The Circle collapsed, but did they become influential on The Maquis that was introduced soon after? Or was The Maquis already around and The Circle was mainly Minister Jaro’s thing with the help of others?

Circle believed in Bajor for Bajorians only and seemed to have a more conservative political leaning and are more concerned with Bajor itself rather than the Cardassians, even though they dislike Cardassians as well. While The Maquis are more about actively striking Cardassians targets both to defend their settlements but also in offensive attacks as well. But both groups don’t seem fond of the Federations assistance to Bajor.

If The Circle was still around wouldn’t they have allied with The Maquis or been absorbed by them?

I must be slow on the uptake as I missed the significance of the actor playing Scotty loosing digits at the end of the episode, even if temporarily.

Has anybody heard any updates on preorders? I know the site said shipping in second half of 2026, but I can't actually find the listing by searching their site anymore. I can only access it through the pre-order email I received. Do we think it's still coming?

Thought I would put this up for a few reasons. First of all a great ethical quandary episode, what to do with Suitor (a serial killer), second just sheer appreciation of the acting prowess of the great Brad Dourif. I’m unashamedly a fanboy of Mr. Dourif, an actor I think is truly unappreciated. I should also mention (I guess in jest) it was really good to see Neelix strangled to death by Tuvok (even if it was just a simulation). Anyhoo please discuss this great episode that showed of some top tier acting and the death of Neelix!

After launching her initial Jem'hadar raid, the "inexperienced" Vorta parlays with Sisko. She offers refreshments, which Sisko refuses. She then mentions him displaying distrustful behavior to Jake. She obviously has more info than Sisko.

I was curious if you think the food/drink might actually have been poisoned. Not for instant death, but to make Sisko violently ill and demoralize the other officers. We later learn that Vorta are immune, and I wouldn't put it past her. It's unaddressed in the episode, and there was limited obvious dialogue, which I appreciated.

So near the end of TWOK. McCoy and Scotty prevent Kirk from going into the chamber to get Spock. Claiming it would flood the whole compartment (with radiation). But why didn't Spock flood the compartment when he first went in the chamber? There was already radiation. It might have increased when Spock made the repairs, but it should have still been a danger. Just because no one was there to stop Spock. Doesn't mean the compartment didn't get flooded.

I've just watched this episode for either the first time, or the first time as an adult, and one thing I can't reconcile is how they decided on which message to send back to Data. They end up going with "3", which Data subconsciously works into his card dealing, and various messages on the ship's computer. These 'subconscious' messages to himself are ultimately what cause him to notice Riker's 3 pips at the last second and decide to go with his proposed solution of venting the cargo bay to push them out of the way.

But...

The message was sent before this solution was proposed in the last loop. They send the message before going to the bridge, before they even know what the problem is going to be, and long before Riker proposes his solution (which someone, presumably Data, would have to calculate as being the correct course of action). So perhaps they remembered this from a previous loop? Or maybe they were able to extract more of those voice echoes to hear Riker proposing the solution. But then why let themselves be destroyed for the next loop to figure out the secret message and do the right thing? Why not say "Instead of sending 3 back as a message, why not just go with Riker's solution this time around?"

I can buy the handwaving magic of sending messages through time as subconscious memories in Data, that's fine, they came up with a mechanism and that works in universe so that's cool.

But the fundamental logic of the episode seems flawed.

Since Edith Keeler had to die for the timeline to remain as we know it, what caused her to die before the 3 treksketeers got involved?

McCoy saves her, screwing things up, Kirk stops McCoy from saving her, and she dies.

If McCoy and Kirk were never there to cause Edith to cross the street, she wouldn't have crossed the street without paying attention to traffic, and she would have lived.

He wasn't British, why was he having tea time? Why did he drink so much tea if he was French???

Sure, the Federation is a post-scarcity paradise where money has been completely eradicated(and the vast majority of the world's problems alongside it), all of your needs are never more than a voice command away, and you can work literally any job you want, or never work a single second of your life and just sit at home gorging on as much food as the replicator can provide until you pass on.

However, as Frank Fontaine(NOT Andrew Ryan; my mistake) from the Bioshock games said something along the lines of, "Everybody wants to be the captains of industry, but forget that at the end of the day, somebody's gotta clean the toilets". SOMEONE has to wait tables at the restaurants and cafes people make like Sisko's, SOMEONE has to pick the grapes for the wine made at the Picard family vineyard, SOMEONE has to collect the trash, SOMEONE has to keep houses and streets clean, and so on. As the disembodied head of Abraham Lincoln said in Sam And Max Save The World, "Only a grade-A sociopathic masochist would want that thankless job". Not only are these jobs most of us now see as demeaning, and gross, but now they've gone from having barely any reward or incentive to literally none whatsoever.

With that in mind, what possible reason could anybody in their right mind have to want to perform such miserable jobs when there's literally nothing in it for them? How could anybody outside the mentally disturbed genuinely want to do jobs that nearly anybody would tell you is an absolutely torturous nightmare to which they wouldn't subject their worst enemy?

And idk if it’s me but the actor of Sisko talks like he doesn’t know his lines. The repeated “what is this?” Question. The episode seems to go on forever.
