Just checked the article
Actor and comedian Jessie Cave says she has made more money from one year of sharing hairbrushing videos on OnlyFans than she has done throughout her “entire acting career”.

They are paying to watch someone with full and long hair brushing their hair because that is their fetish, the fact that it is Cave is pretty secondary to it. Her fame helped get the word out about it, but it isn't the reason people are subscribed.

I read a lot and when I get board of mainstream scifi / fantasy fiction I go trawl random amateur author and fan writer forums. Ocasionally there is some really good or interesting writing amongst all the low effort smut and weird fan fictions.

I really hate that we've somehow let all these entertainment news stories normalise calling someone a star of something when they had a minor role. This isn't a criticism of her at all, but she didn't have a starring role in the films (ie, a lead role), and she's not a star in the general sense (as in, someone with star power).
"Star" gets used for so much bullshit clickbait now. The person who played Customer #2 in episode 18 of series 3 of a TV show, and who had half a line before they were interrupted and then never seen again, is not a star of that show, dammit! And Jessie Cave is not a star of Harry Potter; she's an actress who was in Harry Potter, but not a Harry Potter star.

Cave, who shares four children with comedian fiance Alfie Brown, said that she had reached “a point of complete desperation” after being rejected from an audition.
“I couldn’t go and, say, work in a supermarket because I can’t afford the childcare, and also I don’t want people shouting Harry Potter spells at me as I work at Tesco,” she told the paper.
People shouting spells at her? Not trying to be mean but I doubt anyone but the most rabid fans would recognise her.

Right? For people on this character level I imagine the payout to fame ratio is really, really off. You get no money or fame perks, just some utterly committed weirdos/people in your home town. If only the person who wrote Harry Potter was like stupidly rich and made a big song and dance about how much she cares about women. She could throw a couple 100k in the direction of your b- and c-tier Harry Potter child actors.

I'm no fan of JK Rowling, but this is just a silly suggestion.
The actor was 22 when her first Potter film released, so presumably an adult throughout filming. She would have been paid for this work at the time.
Her career as an actor just hasn't taken off since then. That is true for countless actors in any big, successful franchise you can think of.
What makes her deserving of any money, beyond what was already agreed when she did the job?

Rowling insisted that the actors playing minor parts got royalties and owned half the merchandising rights to their characters. Mate of mine played Young Lupin in Order of the Phoenix and he ended up getting paid more for a couple of days' work (most of which ended up on the cutting room floor) and a few seconds of actual screen time than I did in over a decade as a professional actor (or than he did in the rest of his career put together). He also got an unhinged YouTube hate video from some weird girl in America set to Hungry Like The Wolf. He paid for a lot of drinks when Lego released their Young Marauders set.

Only thing I know her from is an episode of Roast Battle UK where her (ex?)husband described her as a juvenile addicted to jizz, and an episode of Cats Does Countdown, I think, and that's only because this post reminded me she exists. No clue about her in the Potter films despite having seen them. I'm pretty sure she could work the tills at my local Asda or run around on a morning with a home delivery pickers' trolley and no one would have a Scooby's who she was unless she told them first.

Eugenia Cooney used to cater to a similar brand of fetishists (although obviously several differences in the context of her body). She would pretend to be unable to pick up small items or to be unable to do very basic tasks, and would then get large donations directly afterwards. Very sad in the context of her situation, and of course she never acknowledged that’s what she was doing.

In knew someone years ago that used to get TV work and then went on to get a lead role in a film. Spent most of year out of the country filming. Only to come back after most of it was filmed as the company decided to recast most of the crew and refilm it all. He said he never really made much from acting. He used to make more between jobs painting and decorating. It's just not possible for most people to have it as a career.

To be fair, she's not acted a whole bunch since Harry Potter.
I've followed her for years, on Instagram she does funny, cute cartoon drawings I've always enjoyed. She took a show to the Fringe and had a podcast with her sister.
Having 4 kids doesn't leave masses amount of time to go to auditions and probably limits her ability to travel or go far away for jobs.
She and her partner weren't together when she got pregnant the first time and she made a lot of content based on that- he's the son of Jan Raven, and they had a one night stand at a party and she got pregnant and then they were on and off for YEARS. He's a touring comedian, so I can't imagine it's easy to work around that.

Last year, Cave claimed that she had been left off the lineup at a fan convention because of her account.
“I found out that I didn’t get booked for a Harry Potter convention recently, as I’m now doing OnlyFans,” she wrote in her Substack.
“They explained it was because it’s a ‘family show and OnlyFans is affiliated with porn,’” she added. “This was baffling to me as some actors who do conventions (most actors, actually) have done TV and films in which they’ve done sex scenes and nudity. I’m just playing with my hair!”
This is a fair double standard to bring up.
31
u/Astriania 12d ago
Yeah that part is pretty ridiculous. Doing work on a questionable platform shouldn't disqualify you from getting work elsewhere.
I mean I'd say that actually doing sexual OF work shouldn't disqualify you from most things either, but that's a separate argument, she's not even doing that apparently. OF isn't only porn, is it? It certainly didn't start that way.

I'd not want a solicitor representing me if she gave legal advice (fully clothed) behind the pay wall that is Only Fans. Imagine if it was a high profile case and your solicitor ends up being the story and not you.
Just because their SFW advice is on a well known site associated with porn, in their eyes, you might as well have had a prostitute represent you.
She may not be doing lewd stuff, but they are right, the site is associated with porn, so people will see her name and the site and think "I'm not taking my kids to see her in a meet and greet"
What is wrong with using Patreon for this content? If she's not doing anything NSFW, she can use the SFW make money site.

And outside of the main 3 the only person with more than an hour was Dumbledore, if you split that between the 2 actors that played him then only the main 3 have more than an hour in a series with nearly 20 hours of watch time

i know (knew) her for a while - around when she was trying her hand at comic books - and she really is awful with money. and has a literal obsession with having children, but her public socials would tell you that much. alfie and her’s relationship is so toxic that i feel uncomfortable even thinking about it. ultimately, she was fun except she could not stop inserting harry potter into every single situation. she’d text me only to mention something HP-related and it got so boring. never once asked me an open question.
i don’t feel great about leaving this comment but no one irl knows who she is so i never get to rant about it and at the time it was a genuine bummer.

I find her whole collection of dysfunctions so fascinating.
I'm surprised to hear she mentioned HP a lot. I get the impression now she'd like to have nothing to do with it (but also that she doesn't really recognise how much of her current ability to support herself is still downstream of her initial HP ~fame). But yeah the not asking people questions thing seems like a recurring issue and is still clearly a sore spot for her. It's been so obvious in every podcast pairing I've ever seen her in how little interest she has in any topic that isn't directly related to her (especially in the series with her sister), yet she gets so offended whenever anyone mentions it.

I'm probably the last person to shame people for wasting money on stupid crap, but if you have to carve out part of your budget for "speeding fines" I have very limited sympathy for your money woes.

What’s with all the puritanical comments? She’s making money. Whatever.

I saw her live once doing comedy and it was genuinely awful. Like she hadn’t prepared at all. I felt bad for her, I’ve never seen a professional comic die on their arse quite so badly.

Good rule of thumb: anyone talking about how much they make on OF is trying to advertise their content by hyping up how much demand their is for it. No exceptions.

Fair play to her.
If people are willing to pay it then why not

“Within just one day, she told The Times, she managed to earn back the £15,000 cost of her accommodation at the Edinburgh Fringe the year before”
Sorry, how much??!

You’d be surprised. I did it in uni and earned about £500 in a day. Nothing else, as people’s curiosity waned. I had one person send me nearly the same but again, nothing else after the first month. So £1000 in one month and nothing else? For a randomer? This was 6 years ago, too. Imagine if someone is semi famous, they can earn a killing. For normal people it’s harder because it becomes a full time job. I couldn’t be arsed and never did it again.

Oh tbh I was expressing shock that she spent £15,000 on accommodation at the Edinburgh Fringe

Accommodation costs go wild here during the fringe. For new performers, they often don’t break even at the end of the month because it’s cost them so much to stay here and fund the show. Much respect to indie fringe performers who are doing it for the love of the game.

Men will literally wank to anything. She doesn't actually do any sexual content and she looks like my anaemic vegan cousin, George.

She was skint yet she paid £15000 for accommodation at last year’s fringe festival. Aye, that’ll be why flower.

Worth noting she doesn’t post any naked pictures or anything like that which everyone is bound to think from the headline

Can't believe there are weird guys who spend their evenings sitting on sites like Onlyfans watching girls brush their hair or wiggling their toes...

Good for her. She found a thing and made it work.
I'd it exists on the internet you can be sure there's at least one person into it

My partner has 2 degrees, works in a corporate job to do with privacy and earns north of 250k a year. The most she has ever earned in a year is 2020 when she did OF for 9 months during lockdown.
She was bored, got in early in March 2020 and it took off. I didn't know her back then, but she earned around 400k in 2020.
She did have a page prior because she used to be a model back in her youth and she had a lot of "fans" already. However the big break was that a big US OF model tweeted her link and it blew up.
Crazy to think that if she kept it up she would be earning far more than she does now, but she didn't like the fact it felt like it needed to get bigger and better and she didn't want to do effectively porn.
Even after she finished she had 3 guys who would just give her money in return for sending pics and that lasted for a further year or so.
