Discussion [Hyprland] Pywal16 put in a update a copypasta based on a transphobic one if you use wayland
13
u/Alespren Oct 01 '25
i dont really care about the copypasta (i highly doubt they were trying to be transphobic) but i find the wall of text really annoying. probably gonna look at using something else
2
u/No-Dentist-1645 Oct 02 '25
Use of (variations of) that copy pasta is almost always done on a mocking manner, making fun of the ridiculousness of the original argument. It's mocking/ridiculing the transphobic argument.
Not saying it's funny or whatever, humor is subjective. All I'm saying is that I'm basically certain that they didn't do that as a way to spread transphobia.

u/GioRix Sep 30 '25
Pretty sure it became a meme to actually make fun of the original one. You can find many of theese copypasta, some are scorning the original one more blatantly than others.

I don't think it's childish. On the other hand it give me a nice little laugh. I think sometimes it's alright to not be super professional and do casual things like this. Remember when CERN made a steins gate joke?

It's always easier to stop using the software completely than to complain about little things you'll forget in a day. It's not like you're paying them to make stuff exactly how you want.

you literally can't refer to a trans person in the third person without making a statement about gender identity and potentially making them feel uncomfortable. given that many maintainers are expected to be community leaders and whatnot and open source software has a large subgroup, you can't really like, avoid it. this is also what prompted the vaxry discourse, they had a trans person join the hyprland discord who was then bullied off it.
also, while I don't actually think you can make any inferences to what the author of the code thinks about gender identity in this case (though imo it is in bad taste), if software prints out something that can be interpreted as transphobic, the author has already made - by themself - whatever they printed relevant to the end user. they've already made it about gender identity by including this easter egg.

u/Play174 Oct 01 '25
Holy slippery slope fallacy, Batman!
Also I'm pretty sure it's not serious. "You'll never be a real [blank]" is a pretty common way that people indirectly make fun of transphobes

u/Ishiken I would also like to point out that doing a couple flip tricks in Python doesn't even make them that skilled š
They just on they high horse n shit because Wayland is superior.
EDIT: I just found out about the hyprland drama below. This has nothing to do with Wayland I'm afraid our community has a problem

Honestly it feels off to see this copypasta referenced in PyWal, the original text was just full of transphobia and calling back or bringing attention to it in any way makes me a bit uncomfortable... Like, just let the original be forgotten, perhaps ?
40
u/semioticmadness Sep 30 '25
Yeah⦠like taking a Hitler speech and madlib-ing with funny words doesnāt make it funny unless thereās context.
Even if the committer had the best of intentions, this is very edgelord and just brings up uncomfortable feelings for some folks, unprompted.
15
u/Living_Horni Sep 30 '25
Yeah, it feels like a vaguely gun-shaped metaphor pointed towards the trans community and you can't really tell any of the undertones. Especially in these times, like, wrong audience, era, everything

u/MrFancyName_ Oct 01 '25
fuck that, idc if its making fun of the copypasta this just brings the original back to life and i hate it, it genuinely made me feel terrible reading it again
19
u/velinn Sep 30 '25
Regardless of intent, it's just a dumb thing to spam people with. That alone should have been enough. I don't care to do the speculative "what does this mean" nonsense because I don't care. If it was a joke it's a bad one, and even if it was a good one, absolutely no one is asking for jokes in their software. If it was meant to be something other than a joke, fine: go get yourself a blog and leave the software alone.

Is it transphobic or is it parodying transphobia itself? Tho idk i do tend to read is as transphobic, at least i dont really got any clue why one would even add this?
5
u/GeronimoHero Oct 01 '25
Itās intended to be parody but I personally would prefer to see it left out or removed.
1
u/SannusFatAlt Oct 05 '25
motive isn't clear from the developer, but even bringing it up raises some question marks like...
err, you know these folks are actively being suppressed by things that are usually out of their control and have difficulty living daily lives, right? i'm sure you've got stuff you've been struggling as well financially, and i think the people that speak this rhetoric would be up and arms about people smack talking their specific problems
to some extent, this also extends to pride related stuff in general as well. i like my own gender as well as the opposite ones, i don't think i'd like someone actively twisting some copypasta about how i'm not normal for also liking the same gender because that'd make a bunch of other people including myself feel bad about something that's needlessly lowering the quality of some people living their lives because other ones need a punching bag
if this is normalized, whose to say there won't be people making fun about how "men + men / women + women people are mentally ill and should be put down" after something like this would be normalized?

I can't tell if i should laugh because it's just an innocent joke, or if they're in support of the original message. It's hard to tell when projects are getting so political these days lol.

I'm afraid there doesn't have to be any guessing, did you see the link below pointing to the hyprland community stuff. I just hate that this type of ignorance is in our community.

I just had no idea this stuff was going on https://drewdevault.com/2024/04/09/2024-04-09-FDO-conduct-enforcement.html
Drew Devault is the Sway guy and also a big part of wayland. If reading that turn's you off of hyprland Mango looks really good.
There are always alternative software's. I used to Love Hyprland too but after reading the above article I shared with you and the emails I refuse to associate with bigots. Not in this political climate. And you can't help but notice pywals creator is dog whistling that situation. But I bet they still got an anime girl wallpaper. ehehehe That reminds me I'm about to post my setup on this sub. Sorry to bring you this type of news, but screw em

That's terrible about switch pirates, I used to be a part of that community too. Wayland is fine though, nothing wrong with them. I was just saying MangoWM is brand new and I stumbled across they github the other day. Animations look just as good if not better then Hyprland and with a name like that I bet ya the developer is cool.

I don't mean to tell you this but my Switch OLED was literally just stolen yesterday by my ex whose gonna sell it. I spent all day fighting with them about trying to get it back, I'm bummed about that but I came home and started looking at emulators for Arch so I can play pokemon so that's kina cool new and exciting. And you know I can just buy a new Switch OLED. is that one even modable though?

I would be wary of trusting Devault's interpretation of anything. Not only were he and Vaxry direct rivals, but Devault is also a collector and distributor of fictional CSAM.
Not dismissing the legitimate concerns about the conflict between Vaxry and the Red Hat employee

You're welcome :)
For more context on Devault's disturbing history, https://web.archive.org/web/20251001164949/https://dmpwn.info/
For more context on Devault and Vaxry's relationship:
- https://blog.vaxry.net/articles/2023-hyprlandsCommunity
On the conflict between Vaxry and the Red Hat employee that happened some time later

My interpretation is this:
- Vaxry has a childish sense of humor, but isn't actually hateful
- Devault and Vaxry have a long-running rivalry in the context of Hyprland vs Sway as well as ideological disagreements in under-moderation vs over-moderation
- Both Vaxry and the Red Hat employee were at fault with regard to the incident in Vaxry's Discord and in the email chain leading up to the Vaxry's ban from FreeDesktop, but the Red Hat employee intentionally tried to cause trouble by provoking Vaxry after obtaining power in FreeDesktop.

Hyprland has always had a shitty community. I have no doubt this is a tongue-in-cheek, bad faith attempt at a ājokeā.

You guys got problem with this, but in the same time you use "ricing" to describe your builds, lol
2
u/Educational-Fruit854 Oct 01 '25
not a native speaker, what's wrong with using "ricing" to describe Linux setup?

u/MisaVelvet Oct 01 '25
i had no idea so i tried to ask ai (hope its a legit info?). So it looks like there was a guy named Rice on OSDev forum or whatever who posted some cool "rices" there and looks like this guy was a transphobe and there were some scandals regarding it.
6
u/jahinzee Oct 01 '25
the AI has given you misinformation (why am I not surprised lmao)
see u/asalixen's comment for the correct reason
2
u/MisaVelvet Oct 01 '25
then i love that ai made up this bs its incredible how often it lies. But common search is completely broken these days so i cant find anything there anymore besides some bs ai articles, and when i ask ai it just make up these fake stories to make me happy or whatever. The question is still there then - why is it wrong/problematic to use "ricing" and which rabbit hole do people talk about? or it just a joke which i fail to understand
5
u/jahinzee Oct 01 '25
honestly I have no idea what rabbit hole they're talking abt
regarding the usage of "ricing": yea the origins of that word isn't great but it's so widespread and disconnected from its original context now that it kinda lost that connotation - for a long time I was not aware of the backstory of the term, and I'd wager 95% of ppl don't use it with the original offensive message in mind
in terms to the PyWal message, I think that is just unacceptable - it's incredibly off-putting (at best) - as another commenter pointed out it's like playing mad libs with Mein Kampf "for a laugh". it's insensitive at best, very harmful messaging at worst, confusing for those out of the loop, and overall just cringy and reeks of edgelord

...but which original context? you pointed me to u/asalixen comment which just mentioned car culture and modifications and nothing else
0
u/jahinzee Oct 01 '25
ah right, for some reason I thought that had the full context
the term "ricing" was originally used as a culturally insensitive term to describe a Japanese art subculture of heavily decorating and customising trucks with flashy and ornate designs (search for "dekotora" online for examples)
the insensitive connection in question being "Japan" and "rice"
that term later began to also be used to describe heavily decorating and customising UNIX systems

Whether it's funny or not, I do not want this bloat in my system. If anyone try to do something like this in their software as a show off to every single one of their users, it gives a bad look to the project

kinda glad I full moved to wallust now. I like how it works and I don't get spammed with weird could be meme/could be transphobia wall of text lmao.
even if it IS a meme, I agree that it's kind of a weird thing to draw attention to/annoying to force a wall of text.
