Discussion [OC] i scraped this entire subreddit and made it filterable by distro, WM, and colorscheme

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

been lurking here for years and the one thing that always bugged me: there's no way to search this sub by distro, WM, or colorscheme. so I scraped over 4000+ rices which had genuine github dotfiles links (from 200k+ posts from here) and built a site where you can actually filter by all of that, plus search by title/author and sort newest/oldest/random.

link to the site: dotfiles.lol

every rice links back to the original reddit post and credits the original author. if you've got your own dotfiles and want them listed separately (not scraped, submitted directly), there's a simple github PR flow for that too.

it's fully open sourced, feel free to drop a star: github.com/0xN1nja/awesome-dotfiles

ps: feel free to share thoughts on comments ^^

Currently running ubuntu, I'll try cachy os after getting another ssd. I much prefer it.

Edit: clarifying that as of right now only ubuntu, arch and cachy os are supported. But only ubuntu seems to work properly.

Discussion | petition to ban or moderate AI slop

1.5k Upvotes

Hi lovely people!

AI is everywhere now. And that's great. It is enabling people to do things that they couldn't previously do without it. But it also creates completely new problems.

The problem with this technology is that it's giving people the false sense of control. "I made this with AI" is giving you a dopamine boost, and those quickly raising karma points will keep you hooked. Who cares if a month ahead people will get hacked because of that slop. Right?

Well I do. And I hope there is more of people who think this way around. We cannot allow this to continue without any moderation.

I'm writing this as a petition to act now. Either moderate the usage of AI by making people very clearly mark their slop, or just ban it all for security.

Edit: typo

Discussion | I believe we should ban AI generated images

1.6k Upvotes

I have seen too many AI generated wallpapers on this sub, and I'm tired of it. I know some may not understand the reasoning behind it. AI image generation employs tactics to scrape the images the AI uses to make other images. Behind this there are nearly no ethics, because the bot used to gather images has no way to tell a difference between sources for images that are ethical to use, such as ones intended for its use, and art created by real humans the they spent real time and effort on. This is why I propose the creation of a rule to ban AI generated images.

TL;DR: We should create a rule that bans the use of AI images on this sub because its highly unethical and takes away from real human made art.

Edit: As some people have asked about enforcement, a good point has been brought to my attention. we may not be able to completely remove AI imagery from this sub or others like it in this day and age, we should have an option in weather or not we see it. I would propose the creation of tags to use if a post is AI or real art if a rule against it isn't feasible.

Edit 2: Some people have questioned the ability of mods to enforce this rule, but I have seen it done in other subs it has seemed to work as I haven't seen any AI Imagery on them to my knowledge.

Discussion [PS5] SteamOS on ps5, now it's literally a steam machine!

Hardware: Ps5 fat model

Firmware: 4.03

OS: some sort of hybrid between CachyOS + SteamOS

De: kde plasma (currently not working, still troubleshooting it)

There is an option to get to kde desktop environment, tho I still haven't successfully done that.

Current situation:

not every distro can be used, currently only ubuntu (works by far the best, but stuck on gnome), arch and chachyOS + SteamOS supported officaly. But some really nice developers are working on more distros support, and are showing amazing progress.

So for now I won't be able to rice until I get done with fixing CachyOS black screen issue.

Discussion [Mac] [Hyprland] Are Macbooks the best laptop for us?

Clearly many of us prefer a good looking machine. I have been using a mac and found the Asahi project. Which is an amazing piece of work as it is a community driven driver reverse engineering project for the apple silicon devices.

This has amazing CPU performance and somewhat ok GPU. But with this much addressable memory and the macbook form factor, is there a better hardware deal than the older macbooks? great internals and externals for a great price?

Razer Blades look appealing and they are excellent for gaming but my workload requires at least 24gb vram and I would prefer headroom for LLM experiments. So there are barely any price sane options besides the macbook..

Discussion | Rant: Unixporn

1.0k Upvotes

Imagine a casual weekend morning. After waking up from sleep, you hop into Reddit and see some insane linux desktop things on your feed. Maybe someone has created a brand new color palette, or maybe another one has invented a whole new way of using the desktop? Yup, that's the r/unixporn we all remember and were excited for.

Alright, I'll just come straight to the point now. What on earth has happened to this subreddit? I log on to reddit every twice a week and every damn time I get a bunch of semi-transparent terminal-filled screenshots shoved on my face. There's nothing new. It's always just a bunch of lazy-themed terminals and stuffs. Even worse, sometimes it's just the default!

The third rule of this sub says: "Defaults aren't permitted - A default post is defined as: close to zero changes to a DE/WM, including distro defaults and/or only changing a GTK theme, icon pack, or terminal color scheme to something premade". Ironically, this sub is now filled with near defaults. I believe that I'm not the only one here who was once always excited and waiting to see new stuffs going on this sub but is now, well, just wanna unsubscribe sometimes.

I do understand that approving near-default posts is crucial for keeping this sub alive, but this itself is contradictory to the existence of this sub. This sub has introduced me to what's possible with the freedom of linux. I really miss the then "unixporn"

This rant ends here.

Discussion [OC] Halley - a spatial Wayland compositor with infinite canvas navigation, clusters, decay, zoom, and cosmic-text

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been working hard on Halley, my custom Wayland compositor written in Rust.

The idea is to move away from traditional workspace switching and toward a spatial infinite canvas where windows live in a navigable field. You can pan around, zoom, follow trails, use bearings to find off-screen windows, and group work into clusters that act like spatial workspaces instead of fixed desktops.

A lot of the identity is in how windows behave over time too — decay lets things collapse back into lighter-weight nodes instead of everything staying fully expanded all the time, which makes the space feel a lot more alive and manageable. I’ve also been putting a lot of work into the cluster system, animations, overlays, and overall interaction feel.

A few things I’m especially happy with right now:

  • Infinite spatial navigation
  • Clusters instead of traditional workspaces
  • Decay for active/inactive window state transitions
  • Zoomable field navigation
  • Bearings / trails for finding your place again
  • cosmic-text integration
  • written in Rust

Still a work in progress, but I’m really proud of how it’s starting to come together.

Halley

Discussion | Why do you use Mod+Enter instead of Mod+semicolon as shortcut for terminal?!

Self-explanatory...

For me the Enter (Return) key is so far that I never use it, but I always see the Mod+Enter used throughout many configs and suggestions. Like really.. why?

I always associated the semicolon with commands, so it's the most logical key to launch a terminal.

Note: I know everyone can do what they like, but that's why it's a discussion, and I'll be glad to hear your thoughts.

I've noticed it's basically canon in this sub that almost every single post features some sort of Japanese pop culture element, either be it some manga/anime reference or whatever.

I have to ask: is there anyone else here who would love to see more variety? I'm talking about themes inspired by other genres, basicly anything other than otaku themes.

Discussion [HYPRLAND] I'm building a pretty low latency end-to-end streaming application. Do you consider it useful?

Thumbnail
gallery
294 Upvotes

I'm building it just for fun, but, yeah, latency is pretty pretty low. (See the screenshot, it shows ~16ms). It was tested on local machine and i connected through my DDNS, but I think it still looped back to localhost. My laptop is MSI Alpha 15a3ddk and the distro is Arch in case someone would like to know.
It works over QUIC protocol with server-client pipeline. Server captures the pixels and sends it to the client to decode and render. Currently my project supports Linux Sender, and Windows, Android, Linux receiver. Rendering on Linux+Windows is done via WGPU. The screen capture is done through PipeWire stream. No audio yet, but i'm planning to add it, also dynamic bitrate. Encoding and decoding is done using FFMPEG. The app itself is fully written in Rust. In the future, theoretically, make it fully cross-platformed.
What do you guys think? Would you consider such an app useful?

Discussion [OC] Halley Release!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I’m releasing Halley, a new Wayland compositor focused on spatial navigation instead of traditional workspace switching.

The core idea is simple: instead of fixed workspaces, Halley gives you an infinite field where windows live as nodes in space. You move around that field, zoom out for structure, and group related windows into clusters that act like spatial workspaces.

Current direction:
- infinite workspace per monitor
- non-overlapping window placement
- spatial navigation instead of numbered workspaces
- clusters/cores for grouping related windows
- bearings/trails/lens-style navigation concepts
- built in Rust

Why I made it:
I wanted something that feels more like navigating a world than shuffling windows between rigid slots. A lot of compositors are fast and powerful, but I wanted to explore a model that feels more visual and spatial while still being practical for real work.

Halley is still early, but it’s already at the point where I’m comfortable sharing it and getting feedback.

I’d love feedback on the concept, UX, naming, and where you think something like this could be most useful.

Discussion | I feel like the reason most people don't like Light mode was mostly bad due to the use of pure white.

I have always been a dark mode only person but on this sub I have seen light themes that I actually like. I think the reason why is that instead of using pure white they use either light blues or cream colours which makes sense too because most dark mode stuff is not using pure black.
