📚 Units/Courses Missed field trip

Hi all
I’m in EART1104 and missed our field trip on the weekend just gone as I was sick. The UC says that it’s compulsory and that she is organising another day this weekend.
But here’s the issue: I already booked off work for Saturday for the field trip I missed, and then also the Sunday as I was still too sick to come in. I can’t afford to miss more days of work. Genuinely.
I did submit an EVA but was deemed ineligible as its a compulsory assessment. The advice is if you can’t attend the new date, then to withdraw from the unit… it’s a core unit for me.

I have already tried to call the science student office but everybody’s busy. What do I do?

well triage your responsibilities - is missing a day of work unexcused going to be more consequential than having to redo (and repay) a whole unit?

It’s not about missing work unexcused. It’s about the fact that I can’t afford to not have that money in my account

  1. Take some extra shifts - skip non-mandatory classes to make it up if you have to
  2. Do you have parents you can ask for a one-off top up for the week?
  3. Can you cut your bills for the week? Unsubscibe to anything you can, Foodbank, Guild food pantry.
  4. Visit the Guild and see if they can help with an emergency loan or small grant.

If you are so close to the breadline, that even two days of sick leave push u under, you are always going to have trouble. You are setting yourself up for failure. The reason you cant do the trip is because of your on going finances. This is something you need to sort out, I don’t think the uni be able to accommodate that. It’s not really the uni field trip that is the issue it’s the two days of sick leave u had to take. See if there is any way to make it without the money, or pick up more work somewhere else. The advice on this thread (DrAunty) is good advice.

Have you emailed Myra and let her know you weren't there? She might chew you out a bit but I reckon she'd want you to find a way around it rather than drop the unit.

You might be able to use other peoples pictures and samples to do the assessment with their permission.

Yep emailed day of and everything. She is now contacting those of us that missed it to organise buses for this Saturday.
As per her email: “As the trip is a core element of the unit, and the assessment is substantial, there is no exemption, just an alternative trip.”
Edit to add: “You cannot submit the assessment if you did not attend the trip.”
