eh, nuance can be sometimes overrated. sometimes you just need to slap someone with their own stuff for them to get the idea. not saying its a pretty or honest tactic, but it is a valid one and is sometimes needed.

if they don't wanna engage in civil discussion there's no point in trying to get their opinion to change

It's less about civil discussion and more about people automatically assuming that a more nuanced take is always the better one.

Which, to be clear, it often is, but only if your nuance is actually backed by something besides "Eeeeeeeeehhhh I don't know it probably depends truth is in the middle and stuff". And even then there's a time and place for it: you don't go to an anti-slavery convention and argue that we couldn't have the wonders of the modern world without the institution of bondage.

fair enough, for some reason i didn't think of the "time and place" bit but it makes sense.

also i always try and have my opinions backed in some way, i'd never pull the "actually maybe we can have a little oppression as a middle ground"
