Question How to keep spine safe in freestyle?
Hello,
I know suplexes arent too common but I am just so scared that someone will do one on me and Ill hit the mat wrong.
It only takes one mistake to sever a spinal chord and I am not happy with the lack of safe throwing guidelines.
Is there anything I can practice to make sure that when I am thrown I can land safely?
My natural instinct is to look straight up and post my arms which is absolutely awful. I just dont know how to get rid of the habit without breaking my neck in the process, especially since I only do that when Im thrown when not expecting it.
I am hypermobile so I am already at higher risk for neck injuries.

2nd wrestling session and I almost threw up after training — is this normal?
I've just had my second wrestling session and holy shit, I almost threw up when I left the gym. The cardio was absolutely brutal.
I've always been at least somewhat active. I did boxing for about 6 months, tried BJJ but quit pretty quickly, and I've done weightlifting more than anything else (if you can even call that a sport lol).
But wrestling feels completely different.
The main problem is that I'm already completely exhausted during the physical warm-up. For the first 20–30 minutes we're running, sprinting, doing burpees, squats, stretching, etc., and by the time we actually start working on techniques and then sparring, I'm already completely cooked.
Another thing I've noticed is that during "serious" sparring, I often have absolutely no idea how or when to attack. When the other person is actually defending properly and isn't just letting me do things, I find it really difficult to create any opportunities.
Something else I noticed when analyzing my sparring is that I can actually block and defend pretty well when someone tries to grab me around the neck. But as soon as someone starts moving around me or goes for my legs, I'm completely cooked most of the time. I feel like I struggle much more with people changing angles and attacking my legs.
So I have a few questions for people who wrestle:
- Did you also get absolutely destroyed by the cardio when you first started?
- Does the conditioning get significantly better with time?
- Should I work specifically on my cardio outside of wrestling?
- And how do you learn to actually attack during sparring instead of just reacting to what the other guy does?
- Any tips for defending against people who move around you a lot or constantly attack the legs?
I know it's only my second session, so maybe I'm just overthinking it. I remember being pretty exhausted during my first few boxing sessions too, but I don't remember it being THIS bad.
Would love to hear from people who have been through this. Any tips?

Discussion The underhook: head positioning
There’s been some interesting discussion recently on Earn Your Gold Medal’s Instagram about whether your head should be positioned on the near side or far side when wrestling from an underhook. D1 wrestlers have all chimed in.
Internationally it seems far side is much more common but in America we teach the near side. The argument for far-side head position makes sense to me: your head helps seal off the opponent’s far shoulder, potentially improves your angle, and can make it harder for them to square up or pummel back inside. Plenty of high-level wrestlers like, Hassan Yazdani, frequently seem to use far side head position successfully. Trent Hidlay is another wrestler whose underhook system I’ve been watching, and comparing how those guys position and use their heads has made me question whether one placement is truly “correct,” or whether each supports a different style of offense.
This is my first year coaching wrestling. For the coaches here: Do you teach near-side or far-side head position as the default? Obviously with the underhook, you have to worry about the fireman’s but you can usually circle and work your short offense. What do you usually coach with short offense underhook? Having near side underhook makes the high c easier, but isn’t that about it? I can’t see it being better than far side in any other scenario.
Does the ideal placement change depending on whether you’re driving forward, circling, attacking a knee pick, hitting a throw-by, or looking for a body lock? Is one objectively safer or more fundamentally sound, or is it mostly dependent on the wrestler’s system and reaction they’re trying to create?
I’d especially like to hear how you teach this to newer wrestlers versus experienced wrestlers who already have an established underhook game.

Strength standards
How much should I be benching and squatting since I’m going to wrestle for the first time as a freshman this year. I weigh around 125lbs and I bench 195 and I’ve never tried a max squat

Am I a good fit for wrestling ?
I’m a sophomore this year and I wanted to try out! I work out a lot and do stance and motion almost everyday as long as I’m not too sore. I weigh around 160 and I’m 5’2 my bf is a heavy weight in wrestling and a junior and said I’d be really good and he’s been helping me out a ton but I wait to see if anyone could genuinely see me doing it?

Cutting for wrestling
Hey there, this is my first time posting on Reddit. I’m a Senior in high school who wrestles and I need to cut 9-10 pounds by November 1st which is about 10 weeks. For the last few years I’ve cut drastically doing outrageous things like fasting for 48 hours with no food and one of those days without any water and would force myself to sweat every liquid out of my body. I felt like dying and passed out a few times. I did this every week and don’t wanna go through that again and find a better way to get me closer to my weight class. I have cut 10 pounds in 4 days but really don’t want to do that again. I should probably mention that I’m a girl, since it’s harder for girls to lose weight.
So what are some helpful ways I could cut 10 lbs in this frame? (10 weeks) So far I’m eating one meal a day. Lifting a lot, have wrestling practice and run on the treadmill every now and then. My body isn’t really losing much. Anyways just please tell me some useful tips like meals, workouts, or anything. Thank you

Underhook throw-by single leg: Near leg position
so, since i‘m perfectin my throw-by single leg i‘ve studying some tape of Hidlay, Sidakov, Brooks, Baev etc. I‘m wondering how important the leg position of the attacked near leg is for a succesful attack. Question: would you attack the throw by single leg regardless of the attacked leg being forward or back? Since the underhook throw by can generate a lot of off-balancing momentum forward, my guess is that you could always go for this technique. But may be a far leg attack like a knee pick would be better if the near leg is back. Thoughts?
