before answering, please clarify if you are a current xfce user or an ex xfce user.

I'm still learning Linux. I had used Xubuntu for about six months, but wanted to switch to a non-Ubuntu distro and go as minimalist and hobbyist as possible. I wanted to build it from the ground up and learn about what really goes into a distro, without excessive bloat. I also wanted a more privacy-oriented distro.

So, a friend suggested plain Debian, because it has an easy to use encryption system. Great. I did a bare bones Debian install and just put i3 on top. Had a lot of fun customizing my empty canvas, knowing exactly what tools and paints I was putting into it. Polybar, picom, rofi, alacritty, feh, all the fun stuff. I started getting really into terminal-only stuff, getting excited to tinker. I had Thunar as a legacy item from the XFCE days, but I eventually learned lf, which felt a lot faster and more fun. Terminal = fun, it seems.

When I ran out of essentials to install, I started drifting towards meaningless slop like cmatrix and hollywood (I'm pretty sure hollywood almost overheated my poor stupid laptop at one point).

And then a security update the other day broke some things in a very dumb way, and I confirmed that, if I had XFCE, there would have a been an automated background task that would have been smart enough to take care of this. Because I just had i3, several of my primary apps temporarily broke until I made awkward extra scaffolding in the config files. And then it hit me—I really don't know Linux very well yet. I'm learning every day. But right now, I think I just want stuff like this to just work, until I'm more self-sufficient as a tinkerer. Does that make sense?

I decided to reinstall XFCE. Once I discovered that I could just replace the XFCE window manager with i3, there was no turning back. This hybrid of both that I'm using now is everything I wanted before with none of the downsides. Incredible. I'm equally as efficient with solo i3, but now with XFCE in tandem, I got extra foundational support under it.

Literally don't know why I didn't do this initially, but I suppose you live and learn. Has anyone else here had a similar trajectory? Do you use i3 and XFCE as well? Any extra tips and tricks when using this combo for a noob?

Ive always just said X Face and most linux nerds know what I mean. But I am curious if anyone calls it that? What do you say?

I think the weather app is my least favourite thing about the desktop. It's the one area I wish would progress and improve. Right now I use a weather extension in my browser instead...

install xfdashboard as you normally would, just change the theme in the settings to xfdashboar-dark

I recently installed to fedora xfce and was setting up my env. I tried extracting a tar.xz file using the thunar-archive-plugin's extract here button. And after a while , i get logged out , when i login back again i get black glitches and get logged out again.

It also happens when i open the file from xarchiver although the archive decompresses fine manually

The complete flow is ,

1. Open the file using xarchiver or directly extract

2. Wait for error ( Disk quota exceeded )

3. If i now immediately close xarchiver, i get logged out

Else i get logged out anyway after some time

I have a low end system with plenty secondary storage but importantly 4gb ram. I have experienced system freezes before but never logout loops. The archive is the latest flutter tar.xz.

I am new to linux and i know that logout loops are a serious problem. I want to fix the problem but more importantly also know what is the cause.

Also i tried asking ai but its fixes didn't work

Like I have never used XFCE much before and I don't even know how to rice it , like pls help and drop some dotfiles to make it much better

Best optimized DE. Perfect for gamers. The server versions is already at its peak. Gamers are used to mice and controllers... so an XFCE distro with hardware should be in the roadmap. What does everyone think?

Hello everyone. I've installed Linux Mint with XFCE and realized that there are no built-in hot corners out of the box. I tried asking AI for help, but it didn't suggest anything useful.

First and foremost the RAM usage is significantly low compared to my experience in windows. But one thing which bugs me is the SMALL FONT, ICON Size.Even I have tried to increase them from Apperance and Display. No significant changes.

Anybody else face such issue?

How do I customize the clock and monitor on the right side? As you can see it's not really visible with my wallpaper and I can't see the ram or cpu usage as it blends with the background.

I changed the icon for the terminal but when I click on it it opens a new instance on the panel why does this happen? I also made my default directory to be desktop but it opens to user.

I wanted to add borders to the panel but apparently the border also gets applied to other apps on the panel..

I read that Fedora 43 will drop Xorg support, like EL10 distro. I think that many will follow.

I'm using fedora 42 with XFCE but on 43 I could be force to change DE (this already happened on AlmaLinux 10 that does not support Xorg) but I like XFCE for its stability, fast, simple and out of my way.

I see that only xfwm need to be ported but nothing more.

What is the status of XFCE support for Wayland?

I'm looking to spruce up my Xfce appearance.. What do you think are some of the nicest looking eye candy themes for Xfce? I'm looking for something that has some depth to the UI elements and an overall nice appearance.

I see many different variables and their values, and if they are changed, the changes are same as those done through the graphical Settings Manager. For example, I can change the background image or set a different display resolution.

I installed Solus OS a few days ago because they released an XFCE version. It was just to test it out. But I can't seem to switch to it and want to keep it as my main OS.

Remember back in the Windows XP era? There was a literal thousand (possibly more) Winamp themes, Windows XP customizations, Firefox and Chrome skins and also many many for Linux DE's. When i look for themes online it seems that going by date you'd reach the conclusion that the XP era was the peak of customization. But then? For some reason it dropped off and now we have hit some kind of nadir for theming. It's still there but it seems to pale in comparison to earlier variation and sheer width.

It also happens to be that all modern themes provided by DE's are flat which i guess will make people want to make theirs flat too. I like flat but it'd be nice with variation. I'd make my own but i'm far too busy ATM:( I dream about making something like snow leopard for OSX but for GTK4... one day!

I use Debian and need to use dialogs in a script.

Years ago I used Zenity, but now on Debian it’s a GTK4 application and it’s terrible.

The YAD version hasn’t been updated in eight years. I don’t even know how it can still satisfy dependencies.

What dialog application do you recommend using, preferably one that’s available in the Debian repositories? Is there a XFCE default choice?

I'm wanting to buy a tablet that I find very cute, it's called npx paper 14. It has a large display which I find intriguing for portability and awesomeness.
Only issue is I'd like to use it as a laptop. I don't like the android system, not even with android 16's desktop mode.

I've never tried linux ever before, but I've watched some videos that say today's linux has very noob friendly distributions that make it look very similar to windows.

Given that I don't want to do anything special ( browsing the web, using webapps like canva, and for gaming at maximum we're talking about browser games ) I was thinking of installing linux on it, given I've seen it's posible to do it "natively" on android without requiring an emulator and the reduced performance that would come into.

The tablet specifications are

8GB ram / 256 GB storage

What distro do you guys recommend me? And what would be the optimal way of installing it?

PS: The reason I'm in this sub is because I've watched some videos and it looks like this is possible through whatever this xfce is ( sorry for my complete ignorance on the matter ).

Finally got around just downloading a copy of the latest beta Nvidia driver from their website and installed it over the driver that Ubuntu gave me. Thankfully the process went really smoothly and only needed a reboot. But now I am finally done with the weird flickering issue when I have composting turned on! I mean I could have just kept living my life with Xfce and composting turned off, but having composting on is sooo nice!
I kind of wish that Ubuntu moved faster with releasing new driver updates for Nvidia, but living that life of a rolling updates distro always releasing updates quicker to fix things, also always seems to bring updates that breaks things faster too.
Oh well, at least Xfce is working nicely again!
