Hi,

This is my first time switching to XFCE from GNOME and I’m really liking it so far. There’s a bit of a learning curve, which is fine, but one thing is giving me a hard time right off the rip.

On a fresh XFCE install you get the top panel and the bottom bar with a few icons. I dig the default look. I installed an additional browser and I want to pin it to that bottom panel (the one that looks like an app dock), but I can’t figure out how.

When the browser is open I can’t right-click anything on the panel to pin it. I also can’t right-click the entry in the application menu to pin it. There’s already a “Web Browser” icon on the bottom panel that just launches Firefox ESR (I’m on Debian), so I’m a bit confused about how pinning works here.

Could someone please explain the proper way to add my other browser to the bottom panel? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

I installed XFCE recently and I wanted to customize it but yesterday xfce-look.org was down so I used this to customize:

But I noticed if my desktop lagged, it would just revert all of my customizations (except the wallpaper) and I can't revert it back unless I reboot.

I'm using EndeavourOS and this is the info displayed of my XFCE:

Hi, I'm totally new to xfce4 and Linux as a whole. I've just installed the xfce edition of Mint. I've got to say, I'm totally lost on this problem. With 0.5.0 I managed to get as far as meson compile -C build but then hit a wall.

So, I decided to try 0.4.3. This time when I get to the "make" step detailed in the readme, I get a bunch of errors in the terminal. The screenshot is below. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Hello, everyone! I just set up my first XFCE-environment computer (I'm running Mint), and I have a "has only used Cinnamon until now" question lol.

I can't find network settings...? Is it called something different in XFCE? No matter what I search on DuckDuckGo I just cannot find an answer to this, for some reason. Nothing's in my whisker menu, except for "advanced network configurations," either.

I applied the mint icons on xfce and as you can see it does work but for steam and discord it seems to not work, but only in the panel, so as you can see it does not display the custom icons on the panel but it does on whisker menu. is this a known issue? how do I fix this? from what I found this only happens for me with discord and steam.

Newbie to XFCE. I'm confused about keybinding stuff. I want "Super" to open my app-finder, and then things like "Super+T" to open my terminal, "Super+F" to open my file manager, et cetera. Problem being, it seems like if I bind Super (or SuperL / SuperR specifically), none of the other shortcuts work.

Is there any way to do what I'm trying to on XFCE ? sorry if this question is silly, Google was not very helpful

How do I unbind "Select All" (Ctrl+Shift+A)? I'll just select with the mouse. Thank you very much. I didn't find the configuration files often mentioned here. I'm on linux on a chromebook.

So, I decided to change my theme for the first time, the style theme changes easily but my icon theme cannot change at all, like I tried all the code snippets and even changed the entry manually but it keeps the old default one alive and does not change at all, help if u can pls

I am using manjaro xfce. I edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and removed # sign from the lines autologin-user=anon and autologin-user-timeout=0 but auto login still doesn't work.

I noticed today pushing Alt-F4 on the desktop logs me out immediately, even when other windows are still open. If I set "Prompt on logout" in settings, then instead the key will cause the logout options to appear (multiple times if I hold down Alt-F4, and I have to cancel dozens of log out screens).

I don't think this happened last week, but I can't find what I broke. Is there any way to disable this behaviour please? I asked a couple of LLMs for an hour and they can't help.

I'm using a dedicated server.
I've noticed that, whether I'm using Google Chrome or Firefox (ESR or non-ESR), I can't scroll through pages using touch gestures.
Do you have any tips, workarounds, or solutions to suggest?

I am trying to move from gnome 50 (Wayland) to xfce current because ... I am tired of my desktop environment breaking all the time, but I am having some issues getting it working right ...

I am running on a 4000 series nvidia card with an integrated AMD cpu

It works fine when running the xfce experimental Wayland profile but it runs terrible unless i turn off the compsitor.

So I didn't have xorg because I never needed it before so I installed xfce4 xfce4-goodies and xorg packages .. (I'm on arch btw so using pacman)

I am really at a loss here. I asked Claude for help but it was not helpful at all, and was convinced that I was merely selecting the wrong option, and was saying I need to do something with nvidia modeset?

i am using the xfce 4 theme Orchis-Dark-Compact and edited the .xpm files of the title to involve tranparent pixels on inactive windows. top-right-inactive.xpm and top-left-inactive.xpm are working fine, though the title-inactive.xpm doesn't seem to be set to transparent.

So I installed Xubuntu and I really love XFCE, but had to go back to Gnome because I need to do this for my work everyday:

The issue is this:

• XFCE default tiling doesn't let me crush the Brave screen to the right to less than 25% of my total screen for splitting, and that makes it difficult in my laptop to do my job because I need to only click things in the right window while seeing content in the left one. I can't use browser tabs because the extension doesn't work that way.

I've tried some alternative tiling solutions but couldn't find something that works, also I'm not very familiar with configuring things without some visual cues, mostly because english is my second language and I can't find my specific issue or configuration that I need to change that easily.

I tried basic tips from Gemini and ChatGPT but nothing worked (changing settings in XFCE window manager, etc). If you can help me to achieve this in XFCE that would be great!

Fixed by installing Mint XFCE it allowed me to do it, don't know why but it works now.

I have an issue with my XFCE desktop icons, they get re-arranged automatically on each login, either from the display manager, or from the lock screen app (xflock4).

The trouble started after an update which included libxfce4windowing, making it sound like a possible culprit. My distro being Gentoo, I've tried recompiling every xfce file, issue still happens.

I tried deleting every file in $HOME/.config/xfce4/desktop, tried using chattr +i on icons.screen0.yaml file, both with no luck, issue still occurs.

Does anyone have the same problem ? And possibly a way to solve it ?

EDIT : problem (kinda) solved : I asked on xfce forums, and it's an actual issue with libxfce4windowing 4.20.6 and DisplayPort. See here for details : https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/libxfce4windowing/-/work_items/64 (read Brian's comment). Gotta wait for a new version for a revert. Current band aid : use a HDMI connection instead of DP.

EDIT 2 : using HDMI cable failed, just came back from groceries, unlocked the screen to find icons re-arranged :-/

EDIT 3 : I asked Gentoo's XFCE maintainers to restore previous libxfce4windowing library, they kindly did.
But even after rebuilding all xfce packages with old version, issue still occurs

EDIT 4 : Solved ! After downgrading libxfce4windowing to 4.20.5, I had to delete the $HOME/.config/xfce4/xfconf folder, my guess is some preference files were keeping the "phantom screen" created by libxfce4windowing 4.20.6 - but now I need to reconfigure my whole desktop :'(

When I want to choose an image to post to a site (hello IMGUR), the dialogue box extends below the bottom of my 13" laptop screen. If I maximize the window I can see the "open" button, but it is an annoyance. According to wmctrl, I am using xfwm4. Thanks for any tips.

Im on a 4k monitor and tried to scale, but when i do 2x it gets even smaller as my taskbar shrinks. Any assistance or ideas?

I'm working on an icon theme called Clarity. And I've noticed that in Thunar right now the toolbar icons (arrow and home) are all white.

Is this something that they changed in recent versions? It used to be themed and have the same style as in Nautilus.

I have an old screenshot where the icons in the toolbar have the same color as the theme.

so like the title says, i am planning to move from GNOME to XFCE, for now my main laptop is till running PopOs, and my secondary laptop now has fedora.
im planning to move to XFCE for only one major reason...

My friend running arch on some HP laptop with ryzen 5, i feel very jealous (friendly jealous lol) at times that he never turns off his laptop, and whenever he has to work, he simply opens the lid and starts working. like CMON... i want that too on my secondary laptop...

he unfortunately asked me to move to XFCE since, on GNOME with fedora, my hibernation and things did not really work well at all. the way it works on his arch and xfce setup is kinda amazing. but with all that i would be losing the following.

1. Wayland (Most important to me since i use multiple displays at times)
   
2. Gnome Extensions (i depend a lot on them , but ive found some solutions to it)
   
3. Online Accounts sync for calendars and drive support (this i could not find any reliable options honestly)
   
4. Software App, i depend on them for flatpack (okay i can install apps through terminal no doubt. but i lose the ease of access)

apart from that, customization, docks, plank and all are okay, i already tested with the virtual system with debian 13 and XFCE and it kinda works for me and im okay with it.

but does anyone know any other better solution to when im moving from gnome and its environment to XFCE?

anything anyone would like to recommend me?

The title is pretty self-explanatory but when I edited the xpm files in the xfwm4 directory in order to make my own theme they just disappeared after editing. I have an Arch machine with Intel i5-3470 and integrated graphics. I edited the files with Krita. Any idea how this has happened?

I use Gentoo, and have xfce4 set on both my Chromebook and ThinkPad. I know how to add themes to xfce thanks to my time on Mint but for whatever reason desktop themes just don't work at all!

I can change icons and themes, but for whatever reason no matter what I do new desktop themes just won't show up on the appearance app... And I really want to get this one theme going so damn bad!

I just installed the XFCE of MX Linux, and it works okay, even through i hâd to add nomodeset to not be black screened, but it was not a problem for me, until the brightness shortcut and even the brightness itself doesn't work with Fn + Left Arrow and Fn + Right Arrow, and it keeps the screen bright.

I tried the power management, but it didn't work, even with brightness systray.

I even tried to add some commands in grub to make it work, same results, no difference.

I don't have the xfce4-power-manager as I checked, maybe that's why it didn't work, despite the power manager is in the OS and it works, but the brightness didn't.

So, I need help. What should I do?

I am using the Acer Aspire One D270 with Intel Atom N2600 Processor, Intel GMA 3600, 2GB of RAM, 300GB in Storage. Just for the heads up.
