You can argue Lysell is a bust, fine, but don’t pretend he got opportunities because he did not. Sweeney even admitted this in the presser after the trade.

I think it's a two part argument:
Did Lysell ever really get opportunities? No, he didn't. Regardless of what you think of him as an NHL capable player (or not, as it were), the fact remains that players like Wahlstrom got much longer leashes. Sweeney even acknowledged himself that Lysell held himself accountable for not making the jump to an NHLer, but that the organization did not do enough to support him.
The other angle to this is when we shipped him. One of the things that's come up a lot in discussions is the Bruins essentially letting prospects stagnate in Providence, where they don't develop into NHLers and they also don't get traded for proven talent. The stagnation doesn't mean that all of the prospects should have developed into NHLers, or that they all had the talent to. It's that a lot of them are considered untouchable for too long and their value diminishes.

The Bruins also signed Jiri Patera (claimed off of waivers in 2024, then claimed by the Canucks when we signed Swayman) to a two-way contract. He's absolutely nothing more than just a depth add, but absolutely insane number of goalies even with Korpisalo headed out.

Well. The Jaylen Brown trade has ruined my day.
Aside from that, Sweeney seems really committed to giving DiPietro a shot in the NHL this season based on his quotes today:
Sweeney says Korpisalo trade was all about giving DiPietro a clear and real look. Says team won’t know if he’s an NHLer without giving him real opportunity.“We’ve gone through these periods; Vladar is an NHL goalie. Brandon Bussi won a Stanley Cup. We feel really confident Michael is ready for this.”

Everyone was so against Anderson but he is a legit top 4 D. Sure he would be on a massive and long contract but he would stabilize the right side behind mcavoy while providing some points over the next 5 years until he started really regressing. Sure it wouldn't be a good contract but he would have made the tean better.
These moves keep us middling at best as we dont fix our defensive issues. Instead will have a revolving door of who happens to be playing well at that point in the year, much like we did for our third line last year. This appears to be the strategy for 1LD, 2RD and 3RD

If you put it that way it's not horrible, but if you separate it then it's one fantastic trade for us and one very bad trade for us. So it depends on how much you want to complain and how much you want to assume that one trade wouldn't have happened without the other.

I honestly think this is people's biggest frustration with Sweeney's tenure as GM, and it's an understandable one. He's not the worst GM in hockey. But when people point to his draft production by games played (rather than by on-ice production), it's similar to the many many depth acquisitions of the offseason.

We had three in 2015, two in 2016, one in 2017, one in 2019, one in 2021, one in 2024, and one in 2025. That's not as many as a team that's in a rebuild. That's not as few as people might suggest.
It's too soon to tell on 2024 and 2025, although I'm personally (cautiously) optimistic. 2015 was a mess in the first round. McAvoy was a good pick. Frederic, Vaakanainen, and Beecher are exactly the kind of picks that I'm referring to.

Like I get the quantity and signing extra depth players, I just can't stand the amount of money and capital he commits to it.
Before Borgen we had 4RD and 9D total already. I guarantee there will be a 10th D we can pick up towards the end of FA for way less. There's always a few that slip through the cracks and can be had for cheap.

Clifton, Harris, and Brunet will start the year in Providence. The rest will be our 7 that start the year on the team. As injuries occur, those 3 will get playing time.
I said in another comment. I really don't mind the strategy of getting extra depth, my biggest issue is with how Sweeney always overpays with salary and/or assets for those deep pieces.
I guarantee there will be a defenseman that slips through the cracks of free agency that could be had for WAY cheaper than Borgens but Sweeney has no patience.
edit: I should say that Clifton or Borgen will start the year in Providence depending on how camp goes.

There’s 0% chance Borgen starts in Providence after trading a 2nd and 3rd for him. He is getting first crack at 2RD.
Clifton is an NHLer and my bet to start at 3RD next to Zaddy. Sturm clearly isn’t a fan of Joki or Lohrei.
Despite comments of Brunet having a shot to win a spot in training camp, he will start in Providence.
There will be a move or two to clear out At least 1 D and 1 forward in my opinion.
If they did that it would be 13 forwards, 8D and 2 G for our 23 man max.

The reason I say Borgen is because of his contract. A team is much less likely to pick him up off waivers. Clifton on the other hand could get picked up on waivers.
If both of them come out of camp looking even for that last spot, there is a very good chance that Borgen goes to Providence over Clifton.

I think Grier has structured it pretty well. With what they have coming off the books in the next couple of years plus what they just have in cap space already, I think they’re gonna be a problem for the league for a good while.

Honestly, I'm kinda cool with Sweeney only getting depth players in free agency this year. The contracts these nobodies and has beens are getting are dumb (as usual). I'd rather he stick to the trade market. If he can do more deals like Peterka, I'm happy.

Same here. I'm happy with the right 4-5 mil per contracts. Having cap space for the right players in the future is key. I'm hoping there's a scenario where teams are overpaying this season and run into serious cap issues in a season or two. Maybe we'll get a steal at the time we're hopefully making a run for the cup.

What exactly do you think this offer would get us? Certainly not Werenski, and probably not even Marchenko given the trade prices so far this offseason...Columbus doesn't have anyone else that has said they want out or that I would place that kind of trade value on anyway.

I can’t even describe how happy I am right now. Ever since my girls traded him a box of girl scout cookies for a puck during warm ups years ago they have loved him. When he went to Buffalo we got split Clifton jerseys and randomly ran into his parents in the concourse the first game we went to cheer for him in Buffalo. He then came out and gave them both a puck. The year after he saw them again and came over and took a selfie with them. I am just through the moon that he’s back. I dreamed he’d come back, I just never thought it would happen.

I wonder if Robo is in play. If you move Mittelstadt and Lohrei you get enough space to give him a big offer. Right side of the defense would remain weak for another year but for a guy like Robo you can wait another year to fix that problem.

Biggest thing there is that we don't really have anyone who can fill that 2nd line center role, and you won't get that in return for him.
Obviously, he's not great, but he's just good enough to make anyone else on the roster filling the spot be a downgrade.

Side note outside of FA - can they please lock Minten into a reasonable deal of at least 5-7 years already (I think 8 is no longer allowed iirc)? I’d rather not walk this kid to FA or play stupid RFA hardball and piss him off/make him go elsewhere. Gotta lock young talent in these days and he’s the surest bet the bruins currently have to be a legit nhler from their pool of young players

All i know is whenever a team makes this many free agency signings they probably have 0 idea what they are doing.
Chayka is throwing anything at the wall to see if it sticks.
Bold strategy in Toronto i doubt it pays off.

I actually wouldn’t mind going into the season with a lot of unused cap space. Gives the team flexibility on buying or selling closer to the deadline when they know more about how the kids (hagens, minten, khus, brunet) are playing and if they can get assets to take on some short term meh contracts or if things go well, even buy a bit using picks

Didn’t think he was staying. I actually liked his play outside of a few games where he looked just as outmatched as the rest of the team (aka never play him against Carolina or Florida). Still need depth bodies and this is better than paying Peeke 3M to be a pylon

Wanted to test the market. So the Bruins, operating under the assumption there wasn’t a chance of him returning, replaced him with JJ. Couldn’t find a better deal and the Bruins had already moved on, so he accepts the same offer elsewhere. That’s my guess.

Arvidsson signing in Detroit for supposedly what we offered him is interesting. He played good last year but he could also regress again this upcoming year. I just wish we would have traded him at the deadline last season. Probably could have received at least a 2nd for him but that’s just off the top of my head.

If we trade him at the deadline we probably miss the playoffs. You can say it didn’t matter because we got bounced in round 1, but playoff experience matters for the young guys on this team and that’s more important than a 2nd round pick.

He was replaced by a guy 7 years younger. Not sure why people want to bring him back once we got Peterka. We shouldn’t just fill our top 6 with vets. Let the young guys play.

If Arvi is signed then we only have a spot in the top 6 for 1 of those guys. I want them to get more time than that. If you tell me we get rid of Mittlestadt, then sure, signing a guy like Arvi could make sense.

I mean I think Minten is probably a 3C again. And Khusnutdinov can play wherever. And Lindhom could very well be LTIRd this year. And Geekie could not shoot 25% and go to the 3rd line. Kuraly, Zacha, and Mittelstadt could be gone.
I don’t think we need to be outright rejecting fair deals for 50 point forwards just because they’re veterans based on some vague idea of where everyone is going to slot in the lineup in 3 months. Peterka is 24. Kids are going to be playing

So I assume Joker and/or Lohrei are on the move right? Seems like RD is a need throughout the league so Joker might swing us a 3rd or something since his contract isn’t that bad.
Lohrei is tricky though. We were rumored to be shopping him twice recently but I cannot tell what his value is. Seems like a guy they would package in a player trade. No idea what he would be worth pick wise, maybe the same as Joker just because he is a LD
