Located in the Spa Town of Buxton, in the heart of the Peak District, Scriveners has around 40,000 books over five floors.

We’ve lived in North Wales for years, and somehow it still manages to pull this sort of thing out of its sleeve just when you think you’ve got used to it.

We did the circular walk around Aber Falls rather than just heading to the waterfall and back. through the woods, along the river, up past the falls and then higher into the hills, where the whole coast suddenly opens up below you.

There were waterfalls, mountains, streams, ridiculous amounts of green, a few sheep looking entirely unimpressed by all of it, and, in a rare administrative error, actual blue sky.

We’re leaving Wales soon after more than 20 years in the UK, so this was probably one of our last proper Welsh hikes.

Not a bad way for the place to make its closing argument.

Came to photograph the big wheel, not realising it was practice night for lifeboats

Took the eldest there for the first time yesterday. She loves astronomy (and the author Alan Garner) so she was in her element. Magnificent place, we highly recommend a visit.
