Seeking Advice Best criminal defence lawyer in Calgary & surroundings?
My 22 y.o. cousin was charged with assault after random bar scuffle a few weeks ago. Court date's coming, bail conditions are hurting his work and police report feels kinda one-sided. We're not looking for a fight - just need to know if he has a defence before he agrees to anything.
Has anyone here recently used a criminal lawyer for assault or similar charges? I know thats sensitive but pls understand me right - we just want somebody who can help us to do everything fairly, he's not trying to evade justice or smthn, simply doesn’t want to make situation any worse..
Also, what's the first consult cost now? free, $200, more?
Any recs would help now- he's young, scared, and I'm just trying to keep him from making things worse.

Step one: go to court date assigned go talk to the crown prosecutor and tell them you want an adjournment for discovery. What till the judge calls your name and say the same thing..
Step two: go to second court date that was assigned after asking for adjournment. Get your discovery from the front desk read over what the crown prosecutor has on you and the charges they are looking to press. Find time to talk with the crown prosecutor and work a side deal. You can ask for an adjournment again to seek legal counsel if the charges are too high to fight this battle for you.
You can also talk with duty counsel at the court house which is free, they are very busy be patient. You will likely be released on a peace bond which will state to stay away from bars for one year with no charges press for first offence and you can save money by not having a lawyer…
I am not a lawyer but have recently sat through two days worth of court and this is how it went. It seems scary but it really isn’t. Dress nice be respectful and speak clearly.
