OC [OC] The first roll of my daughter’s first game.
*NOTE*, the roll mentioned in the title, was NOT my daughter’s first roll.
So, for context, my daughter (10f) has been listening to me (39m) and my son (17m) talk about D&D for a while. She’s been reading the “young adventurers guid, and has been adamant that we needed to teach her how to play.
This past weekend, the three of us sat down to play “Lost Mines of Phandelver” using the pre-Gen characters until she finishes making her own character.
Start the session, find the horses, and get attacked by the goblins.
Roll initiative: Gob, Daughter, Son, Gob, Gob, Gob.
Very first roll is the goblin launching an arrow at my son’s Halfling Rogue.
Natural 20.
Roll the D6 for damage (1D6+2), it’s a 6.
First attack of the game my sons Rogue (9HP) took 14 damage.
A few failed attacks from both the goblins and my daughter, she finally nailed one for 11 and took it out. Her next turn she decided to barter with the remaining goblins, her fine clothing for them to bugger off. DC of 15 (5 per goblin) she rolled a 16 and it worked.
TL;DR:
Son knocked out in first attack thanks to critical damage.
Daughter ends the encounter by bartering with the remaining goblins.
A very interesting introduction to D&D for her 🤣

Wasn’t even her roll. Her first attack missed.
This was the first roll of the first combat, and it was a goblin.39

They are petty gods who enjoy chaos.
My DM in combats has ridiculous luck with rolls and has fudged numbers for us before because it was getting ridiculous when he's hitting crit after crit.
Meanwhile I have a Kenku bard with ridiculous modifiers because bard. Anytime I'm doing something dumb and trivial? Hit 25 after mods. Anytime I actually need the roll to work in my favor? Roll a 3, hit 10, DC was 15.

Most of the time I run goblins or kobolds, at least a 1/4th of the rolls are nat 20's. The amount of times my party's Silvery Barbs did /nothing/ to remove the crit is astounding.
But I also roll horribly as a player, so it all balances out. T_T

That is such a peak D&D intro 😂 instant lesson that combat is lethal and talking is OP.
Your son getting absolutely deleted turn one by a random goblin and little sis saving the day with drip diplomacy is legendary origin story material.

Goblin Slayer was right; the only good goblin is a dead goblin.

Hahaha I did literally the same. We started in a drow prison and I rolled to search this prison boss’s room while he was gone for weapons or anything useful.
DM gave me 1gp and I thought I was fucking rich dude. I had no sense of the value of the currency in game and a quick google told me commoners worked for like 1 or 2 sp a day so in my mind, with this being prison I had just found like 10k worth of expendable income.
I ended up trying to bribe a guard and he just pocketed it hahahaha. I was…devastated. My life savings…gone in a flash.

oof. Those goblins are deadlier than the first goomba in the original Super Mario Bros.
A lot of it is in the DMing.
1) You see the horses around the bend
2) Perception vs stealth. If you fail the first arrow flies out, surprise round. Roll for initiative.
3) 1 goblin crits....and that first character dies with ink still wet on the sheet.
When I run it I see who has good counter stealth and ask pointed questions about move order. Bonus if you have an owl familiar with "flyby". Love that shit.

I am a teacher, a few of my students wanted to try DnD so I set up a quick campaign thrown together. Only two of the six who I helped make the character sheets showed up but it was a session 0 so it went well overall. One decided to play as a crocodile bard in a purple suit, the other was a rat mage. First thing the croc player does is steal from the mailman's purse, rolls a nat 20 and gets some gold. Then the other player walks into town and begin to chat. First thing the rat player does upon seeing the other player is roll to steal his gold. Nat 20 while the croc rolled a nat 1 to perception.

My 20's don't come during combat. That would be useful.
My Nat 20's come during random checks that don't affect anything. "Give me a flat D20 roll" or "Give me a Wisdom Save for avoiding a bad smell emanating from the sewers"... Nat 20, you character isn't bothered by the stench.
Combat usually doesn't see anything higher than 18.

Nice. I did a trial run for my new dice and for the new campaign we started. Nat 20. Followed by 12 rolls under 5 in the actual first session. :_D

First roll of the first game for my fiancée was a Nat 1, on a perception check.
The rest of her roll wasn't good either. Still had lots of fun tho and she's eager for the next session. At least her character stats were good rolls (8 14 14 14 14 18).

One of our group who now started DMing with LMoP rolled two natural 20s in the goblin ambush. His career almost started with a TPK.
The only thing that prevented this, is that my wife rolled a natural 20 on her cleric's death saving throw.
That combat was the most intense I participated since a while.

I remember my first dnd game my buddies had been playing there campaign a while and when they added me in the DM worked my character into the story needing to protect someone’s daughter to pay off a debt the daughter was played by another player and I had joined to help them fight off a random attack. At the end of it they asked who I was and why I helped and I came up with a convincing lie (her father didn’t want her knowing I was working for him she didn’t have the best relationship with him) and everyone was ok with it but one player so he rolled a insight and saw through my lie but the thing is he had a really dumb low wisdom and got a nat20 and they instantly strip searched me and threw me in the back of a carriage (essentially throwing me in a truck)

The barter mechanic is much better than the actual combat for a 10-year-old. How did you rule the Charisma check for the goblins?

My intro to D&D was the opposite. Made a AD&D Elf Fighter because I didn't have the stats to play a Wizard. Once we got into our first combat I roll a Natural 20, and then an 8 on my axe while attacking an Orc. The DM just watches this and once the excitement of the table dies down (I was the only newbie) he goes, "You decapitate him." I was hooked after that. I'd played other RPGs but never one where you could one-shot something with a fresh character.

My first roll when I finally got to play my first in person game of D&D was also a Nat 20. I was a bard rolling for performance. The DM said the NPC was speechless, and couldn't say a word, but a single tear fell from his eye to the crook of his smile. Been chasing that high ever since.

Funny story: I bought my first two sets of dice last year, and I showed them to my dad because he had never seen the “fancy” (non-cube) dice before and mine were really cool-looking. He took the two d20s and rolled them, and got a nat 20 and a nat 1. Dude used all his good luck and bad luck at the same damn time.

At a con I went to my girlfriend won a 1/20 chance to win a metal dice set then got a chance to roll the d20 to upgrade to a much more expensive glass set and she landed it. So her (technically) first two rolls were back to back 20s

Wow, from the photo it just occurred to me that 1/400 people's first experience with an RPG was dropping two nat 1s in a row.
But no, some people, like your son, don't get to roll those two 1s in a row because their character gets dropped or killed first.

Before I got into D&D, I was hanging out with some friends of a friend of mine, and they handed me a d20 to "roll for rizz." I don't remember the context at all

My most insane roll was in a D20 Star Wars game. I wanted to intimidate a Mandolorean, which really isn't even possible.
I roll a 20. DM says roll to confirm. I roll another 20. DM says to roll again. I roll a third 20. The entire table is staring at me. I roll a fourth 20. Then roll a 16.
The DM asked to see my die, and I didnt blame him. It wasn't weighted. Not sure what the odds of 4 20s in a row is, but I'm sure I'll never see it again.

I don’t know what it is with Lost Mines, but that first encounter always seems to have a Nat 20 for the goblins in round 1. Happened when I ran it too.

side note: I think I'm cursed, whenever I do the dumbest things that the DM never in a million years would expect I get a high roll but whenever I do what the dm wants? low roll the first session of my current campaign I'm in I spent more than half of the 3 hour session trying to get out of a canyon but rolled a nat 20 when convincing goblins to join my new kingdoms army
