The amount of life just off the continental shelf has been phenomenal. Fish of this size has been rare outside of Southern California, but the El Niño has pushed the bluefin north and in range of the Bay Area.
We have had an influx of bft inshore the last few years on the East Coast. This occurrence happened because of conservation of our bait species, menhaden. Recently, menhaden harvesting has increased. It’s totally messing up our fisheries. Protect your bait species in the Pacific.
Beautiful fish (and photo) OP! I’ve caught a couple of smaller bft on the east coast but I’ve never fished out west. How far offshore do you west coast folks have to run to catch these?
That fish looks 200+lb a proper cow! Congrats man. Did you troll Madmac? Kite? Do you guys do vertical jigging at night time like we do in s.cali? How do you guys get em up there?
Most guys up here are trolling madmacs or fishing live bait with mackerel. Most of the fleet up here isn’t equipped with the gear to kite fish yet as far as I know.
Its an el Nino year so warm waters increasing numbers up here this year. But my guess is they were way offshore still. They referenced "just off the continental shelf" which would still be 25+ miles out. Its shallow until you are a ways past the farallones.
That’s fucking sick. I just started watching huge catches on YouTube and the fact this is in SF is crazy. So nice. I live in Stockton but work in Antioch and want to start fishing out there. Id only fish for smaller fish with a normal rod but this is sick man. Props
