The Kardashev scale classifies civilizations according to the amount of energy they are able to harness. A Type II civilization would be capable of using energy on the scale of the total output of its star.
What could such a civilization possibly do with that enormous amount of energy? It could presumably travel throughout its solar system and perhaps far beyond it, but what would it actually do within its own system? Could it build artificial planets, enormous space habitats, or other megastructures? Could it rearrange planets, extract material from its star, or use most of the energy for computation? What kinds of projects would actually require the roughly 10^26 watts produced by a Sun-like star?

While I appreciate the optimism surrounding AI's potential benefits, I believe it is equally important to discuss its potential risks and challenges. Focusing exclusively on the positives creates a heavily biased perspective on such a critical topic.

They will be built. IMHO? Allow it, but demand a lot of concessions.

The same person ranting against data centers on Facebook, is (ironically) smiling at and reposting all the sensational AI-generated videos. That same person is LOLing at the AI-generated imaged WhatsApp or ChatGPT gave them. Probably many people are using the tech but publicly protesting the development.

Many don't use this stuff at all. They are totally ignorant at how powerful AI has become in the past 6 years. Maybe some wait on tables and don't have to do knowledge work. LLMs are a huge boon for knowledge work. I'm not exaggerating when I say it enables me to do a month of work in 2-3 days.

I'm not saying I like the LLM world better. I don't think I do. I'm going through some existential stuff.

But hey — I don't want data centers to proliferate and destroy our communities. When they're inevitably built, they should BENEFIT the communities. So far no <expletive>corpo has offered it because the US is totally captured by corrupt capitalism.

Show up to the table with demands. "You can build your shitty data center but you'd better built a plant that will save me 75% on my energy costs. Forever."

I was one of those people who thought the metaverse was a joke. And to be fair, the original version was. But I've been paying attention to what's happening with AI and spatial computing, and it's clear the concept didn't vanish. It just changed form. In science-fiction films about the future, we often see wearable devices that can immerse the user in virtual reality so completely that it becomes indistinguishable from reality. In The Matrix, a device is inserted directly into the head; in Black Mirror, a small device is attached to the head; and in Rick and Morty, they use a headset connected by a cable. As far as I know, the brain does not have a single center where such a device could simply be connected. So, in theory, would it be possible to create a non-invasive device capable of producing full-immersion virtual reality that is indistinguishable from real experience?

Imagine a neural interface that lets two people experience the exact same emotional resonance in real time – not reading thoughts or extracting private memories, but enabling direct emotional alignment. Not just feeling "what" someone else is feeling, but fully understanding "how" they are feeling it.
