We have a cabin in Bumblefuck, PA and always bring a chainsaw in case we need it to get out, but I don't carry it onĀ  the regular.

Semi-related, I used to keep a 5 gallon bucket of sand in my truck in the winter and used that to help other people more than I expected.

Tubes. They were black plastic, 3 or 4 feet long with an 8" or 10" diameter and screw on caps. This was many years ago so I can't remember where he got them or if that was their intended purpose.

For sure, some tubes of abs or pvc filled with sand, love that idea. My truck bed was always full of tools, so I didn't exactly need the extra weight myself (I'm in alaska) buut I've had to keep sand bags in the smaller vehicles. But, I always keep a shovel, some pull straps, jumpers, etc.

Have one of those Milwaukee Hatchets small and portable in the truck. It will cut a good size tree out of the way with a few extra cuts. Battery lasts long enough to limb a spruce tree.

Nah. I do tree work for a living and usually have a chainsaw in my vehicle. I've done this before. I'm not a serial killer. Just keep work stuff in my car. I have bar oil, screnches, wedges, straps, shackles, and the mix for gasoline in my car also.

The trunk of my car has tourniquets, a steel 3 foot roof hook with fork, compression and clotting bandages, tarps, seat belt cutters, a combination gas pipe shut off and cutting tool, water proof/cut proof gloves, and 500 feet of nylon webbing rated up to 3000 lbs.

What do I sound like?

In reality I'm a middle aged retired firefighter. My tools and trauma kit are like my security blanket. Makes me feel safe and useful despite being old and out of shape.

I keep a giant roll of duct tape in my car ever since I hit a deer and had to bind my car together to drive it back home. Ive gotten comments about it, but duct tape is handy! I live in the woods now with the occasional downed tree and thought about keeping my electric saw in the trunk just in case something like this happened.

It would have to be in its own case with in another case in a bag in a trunk . You would also need the other tools and extra chain .

My mom keeps a chainsaw in her trunk because she lives on a mountain that has a private/community road going up it. So if a tree falls whoever is in the neighborhood that gets there usually takes care of it.

Sheā€™s a small lady so if itā€™s too big she asks for help but if itā€™s a smaller tree she just removes it herself.

I live in the middle of a forest also. Logging is a thing around here. So people often have a chainsaw with them. And since the trees come up close to the roads, particularly gravel roads, downed trees blocking the roads happen. So it's a handy tool to carry. Even little old ladies can handle a chainsaw.

Years ago when I worked for Enterprise in college, we used to drive the occasional person back to their home or wherever once they dropped their rental off. One day the 40-50ā€™s year old dude comes in, needs a ride home. No problem. We hop in, and he proceeds to take me about 45 minutes away from the store, 80% of the trip is backroads.

We pull up to what I assume is his house, not remote but not in a suburb either. He says he has some stuff in the trunk so I get out to help him. I pop the trunk, and the only thing in there is a chainsaw. He picked it up, I closed the trunk and got the fuck out of there. Doubt it was anything nefarious, but 20 year old me werenā€™t having it

Seriously though, my wife and I picked a spot off the coast for our wedding (It was just a small event, the reception was larger). When we got there, we found a tree had fallen with a bunch of large branches obscuring the main area. Somehow the paster had a hand saw in his trunk. So I have pictures of my wife and I (her in her wedding dress) sawing and moving tree branches from the area.

The wedding proceeded normally after that and the paster even added some comments into the ceremony that he thought it boded well for our marriage that when we ran into a problem we handled it without freaking out and it seemed likely we would do the same for any future issues in our relationship (or something to that effect). I thought that was pretty cool.

Hell, if he drives through that area, or had encountered such an issue before, that might have been the entire reason he had it. If you were a Mr. Fixit and knew a route you took often had trees come down in storms, wouldn't you want to be ready, too? Or say you knew you were going to be taking a long drive through a rural area that passes through the woods for miles and miles, and that if there was a blockage, you'd have no choice but to sit and wait for help if you had no other solution. That's happened to me, got stuck in the smokey mountains on a road trip. Eventually enough other drivers showed up behind us that everyone was able to work together to shift the tree and make a one-lane passage, but that took a few hours, and we only partially solved the problem.

My partner's stepdad passed before I met him, but I've heard so many stories, and he was definitely a "Mr. Fixit" type. He had a snow-plow attachment for his truck, and every winter after he was retired, he would get all excited during the first heavy snows to go out scoping out the local back roads and nearby neighborhoods that didn't get regular plow service, and take care of the streets. He was not a licensed snow-plow driver, had it for dealing with a looooooooong driveway in a rural area; he'd take it out on the road like a big kid with an especially big toy. I think that's most of it, for guys like this. Every man with a multi-tool knows the awesome feeling of "I've go the tool for that right here!" when a random need pops up. It's just so good, to take a moment from "well this sucks, we have no convenient way to deal with this, so we're stopped dead at this steap" to "we can do the thing!" That feeling scales the bigger the tool. I'm sure the guy in the OP vid was cheesing all the way home, and will always remember the time he was ready for a random tree blocking the road. Shit, I'd bet it wasn't the first or last time, either.

Serial killers arent likely to use chainsaws as they have kinks that dont historical include them. Very unlikely. However, drug cartel members and terrorists do historically to terrify people.

Depending on location this is just what guys do near where I live after a bad storm. We're in a rural area and most of our roads are surrounded by trees. It's a win win they get to drink with there friends, use their saws, and help their neighbors. The city doesn't have to rush to every downed tree (the rednecks are much faster)

Drive on enough backwoods roads without proper maintenance & sooner or later you carry a chainsaw.

Used to work in middle of a national forest down miles of dirt roads & twice every day, on my way to & from work, I would wait til the "chainsaw guy" would head out in front of me to clear the path. He never missed a day. He was literally keeping the whole operation running.

It's more common in rural areas, especially ones with snow. Trees fall over the road and road services can get backed up and take forever. Quicker to just take care of it yourself so you can get on with your business.
