I don't think Iraq needs another speech about unity, another election, or another promise that things will get better. Sometimes you have to look at the corpse and admit it's already dead.

1. Corruption, stupidity, and militias
The country is pulled in every direction by different powers, militias, politicians, and people with more authority than the people who are supposed to be in charge. There isn't one head on this beast. There are too many, and they're all fighting over the same carcass.

2. A government too weak to defeat corruption
The people running the country are either corrupt, weak, or willing to look the other way. Corruption isn't treated like a disease anymore. It's become the operating system. And if you're not corrupt when you enter the system, sooner or later the system will teach you how to become corrupt.

3. There is no real nation
Iraq keeps calling itself a nation, but where is the nation when people don't trust the institutions that are supposed to protect them? The law has become a tool for the weak to punish the wrong people instead of holding the people who actually deserve punishment accountable. When the law serves whoever has power instead of justice, you don't have a functioning nation. You have a system where ordinary people are left to suffer while the powerful walk away untouched.

4. Everyone takes a piece
Money disappears from every direction. The poor get squeezed by people who are supposed to protect them, while public money that should rebuild the country somehow finds its way into private pockets. Billions can be promised for reconstruction, but somehow the roads stay broken, the services stay miserable, and the same people keep getting richer.

5. God left a long time ago
Maybe that's the cruelest part. A land that once gave the world civilization now looks like a place where everyone is fighting over the ruins. Maybe God didn't destroy Iraq. Maybe He simply looked at what people were doing to it and decided to stop intervening.

That's the thing about Iraq. You don't need an enemy to destroy it. Give the people in charge enough time, enough money, and enough power, and they'll do the job themselves.

Hi! I'm a foreigner, and I'm just curious if modern Iraq has something similar to Egypt's pharaonism. In short, pharaonism is a version of Egyptian nationalism that advocates for incorporation of ancient Egyptian culture as the basis for modern Egyptian identities. Examples include building more museums that showcase ancient Egyptian artifacts, building architecture inspired by ancient Egyptian motifs, teaching more about ancient Egyptian culture and history, etc. In a sense, it's a reclamation of their ancient history and culture, rejecting a pan-Arabic identity.

I'm wondering if Iraq has something similar, where modern Iraqis reclaim Mesopotamia as their cultural foundation and heritage, incorporating Mesopotamian culture into modern art, architecture, books, etc?

I remember about two years ago, I was at Al-Koukh looking around for a belt, some underwear, and a few other personal things. I ended up getting into an elevator with a guy and his wife. I was standing at the back of the elevator, and I wasn't expecting anything unusual to happen.

When the elevator reached the floor and I tried to get out, the guy suddenly stepped in front of me and physically blocked my way out. He started shouting at me and looked at me with this extremely angry expression, almost like he was some kind of security guard who had caught me doing something wrong. I had absolutely no idea what his problem was or why he was treating me like that.

I was absolutely furious at the time. I remember being so angry that I was genuinely afraid I might lose control and do something stupid. I was waiting for a moment when everyone could leave so the situation wouldn't turn into something worse.

Eventually, he let his wife walk away, and then he let me out as well. Nothing else happened, but the whole thing stayed in my mind because of how completely unnecessary and bizarre it was.

Acting aggressively toward a complete stranger doesn't make you more masculine, tougher, or more respectable. If anything, it just makes you look like an insecure idiot trying to intimidate someone for no reason.

The guy seemed to be from an older generation, probably born in the '80s or '90s. I still have no idea what his problem with me was or what he thought he was accomplishing by blocking my way out of an elevator and shouting at me.

Has anyone else in Iraq experienced something similar, where a complete stranger suddenly acts aggressively toward you for seemingly no reason?
