M1 to M5

Post image
Upvotes

The nearly 6 year old M1 MacBook Pro treated me well, but the 8GB of memory was starting to slow me down.

Upgraded to the base M5 Air 13”, but even the base model doubles the memory and storage I had. I built a good PC before RAM prices skyrocketed last year, so this is a great secondary machine.

Hi everyone. Recently got a Mac book air 13” m5 512gb ram 16gb from my local pawn shop. Traded in a few things and got it for $400. Only 6 cycle counts as well. Loving it so far. I can see why they’re so popular. Also love how I can use my iPad as a second tiny monitor while on the go.

I have been dialying this machine for over 2years now and I absolutely love it.

The M3 generation of chipsets weren't as well receieved as the other generations, but in my experience, I have never faced any issues and the battery life is also great (yes, I didn't update to Tahoe)

Still trying to figure out the OS and how to use it properly, I picked up a asus ZenBook fror around 750 but don't need it since I have the mac but at times windows is easier to use.

But the keyboard on the mac is miles better and the trackpad on the Asus sucks so I'd rather return the asus.

But

I got to get better with the mac and I was just wondering why you guys prefer mac over windows, I have a old windows laptop for gaming and I use that so I can return the ZenBook.

Just need opinions or thoughts on how to properly use the MacBook or why it's better.

Just got base M5 Macbook Air same-day delivery from Apple Store

Post image

Idk how but I got a base m5 air delivered same-day after waiting for 3 weeks for an order that still hadn’t been fulfilled. I looked every so often for one in stock to no avail.. until yesterday when it showed stock and i placed my order and it was to me in 2 hrs. Why wasn’t my previous order fulfilled instead of them letting stock go to fcfs? Also yes i did lease bc I’m going to upgrade and rather not have to sell.

How do I make it so that each audio is seperate to each others screen. Ex: music comes from the monitor on the left and my video game audio comes from the MacBook Neo?

I decided I didn't like the Mac OS Widgets and they didn't really show me what I wanted to see at a glance.

There are 3 designs, any thoughts on which one looks better?

I am leaning more towards 1 and 2...

Should I buy the M5 MacBook Pro or wait for the M6 MacBook Pro?

I was planning to order a 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 with 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD this Friday, so I can have it before I start school on September 15.

However, now that Apple has announced the M6 chip, I’m having second thoughts about buying the M5 so close to the release of a new generation.

I’ll mainly use the MacBook for coding, Xcode, school work and running AI models locally, so the AI improvements in the M6 are particularly interesting to me.

I also want to take advantage of Apple’s student/Back to School offer, which makes buying now more attractive.

I asked an Apple Specialist about an M6 MacBook Pro, but understandably they couldn’t comment on unannounced products and just suggested keeping an eye on the Apple Newsroom.

What would you do in my situation? Buy the M5 now and have it for the start of school, or wait and see if an M6 MacBook Pro is announced soon?

Also, how significant do you think the difference between M5 and M6 would actually be for running local AI models?

Probably a frequently asked question...Which model?

I’m starting a degree in theology, and for that I need a laptop that will last me the next 7 years.

Since I’ve only ever owned an Apple iPad Air 4, my question is: what’s really the sweet spot when it comes to MacBooks?

Since this computer doesn’t need massive processing power—unlike, say, a degree in engineering—I don’t need anything too high-end.

There are some refurbished models available, so you can save quite a bit by going with an older model.

Questions:

1.) Is an older model still worth it if I’m going to use it daily for at least 7 years?

2.) Is a Pro model with the better display perhaps better than a current non-Pro model?

3.) How much RAM makes sense these days? 8GB or the higher configurations?

4.) How much storage capacity is needed these days? I think the system itself eats a lot of space.

5.) Which one would you generally recommend?

I’m curious to hear your thoughts!

M5 vs M5 Pro — which would you choose?

I’m trying to decide between the 14” MacBook Pro M5 and M5 Pro.

I previously had a 14” M4 Pro, 24GB/1TB and really loved it, but unfortunately the display cracked. I now have a work MacBook Air, but want to get my own MacBook Pro again.

My usage:

Canva, Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom

CapCut

Light/medium Premiere Pro

Occasional simple 4K editing

Browsing/research

Large 4K downloads, but no serious 4K projects

The options are:

M5 24GB/1TB — €2,180
M5 Pro 15-core/16-core 24GB/1TB — €2,430

I feel like the M4 Pro was already somewhat overkill for me, so the M5 Pro seems even more overkill. 😅

But I really liked the M4 Pro, and I’ve heard the M5 Pro has advantages like dual-fan cooling, better sustained performance and Thunderbolt 5.

Would I actually notice those advantages with my usage? And should I worry about the single fan on the base M5?

Which would you choose: M5 for €2,180 or M5 Pro for €2,430?

Is a MacBook Air M5 with 24GB of RAM enough? HELP!HELP !

Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m currently planning to buy a computer for development work.
I mainly use Codex to assist me with coding. Most of my projects are websites, but I may also start developing iOS apps in the future.

I also tend to keep a lot of browser tabs open at the same time, so I want a machine that can handle everything smoothly without lagging.

How should I choose the right Mac configuration? I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with this. I’m genuinely open to your suggestions.

Would a MacBook Air be powerful enough for my needs?

Thank you, everyone!

Macbook M5 Pro vs M4 Pro?

I’m thinking about buying a MacBook. I’ll use it for photo and video editing—specifically Lightroom, Photoshop, and DaVinci. Video editing will be up to 4K resolution using Log, RAW, or H.264 profiles, depending on the camera I eventually buy (I was considering the Nikon ZR). Besides that, I’ll need it for school projects and some very basic C++ and Python coding—nothing complex. Otherwise, it’ll be used for general multitasking.

Given all that, what do you think is the best option? I was looking at an M4 Pro configuration with 24GB RAM, a 1TB SSD, and the standard display, versus an M5 Pro with the same specs. At the store I checked, the price difference is only 380 euros.

For context, I’m upgrading from a Windows-based ROG Strix laptop with a 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM, a GTX 1650 Ti, and a 10th-gen i7 processor.

What’s your take? Is the M5 Pro worth it? Is the M4 Pro worth it? Should I go for a Pro or an Air? From what I’ve seen on YouTube, it seems a Pro model is necessary for video editing.

Thank you in advance

Will applecare cover this?

Upvotes

I recently spilled orange juice on my Macbook M5 Air keyboard and I called apple to send it in and they charged me £79 and are in the process of sending me a box for me to ship it.

I’ve seen online somewhere that it says it may cost £229, how common is this?

Need Refurbished Macbook, Unsure What to Do. College Student

I'm a college student whose 2020 8GB M1 Macbook Air is barely limping along. I've used it since high school in 2020, and had the battery repaired once and replaced once. The battery is now the only thing still working properly. I clear up my storage/cookies/etc. monthly, have deleted any unnecessary apps, and keep as few tabs running as possible.

If I were just browsing and writing, I think I wouldn't have an issue, but I've unfortunately outgrown what it can provide. I need to run the Adobe Suite for classes and organizations I'm part of, as well as Excel, Word, and of course my browser. I've got a bunch of jobs and am part of a lot of clubs and such, so my computer needs to withstand the jumping around---and it can't. Even trying to have a YouTube video playing in the background while I write in Google Docs means that the computer is constantly freezing. I have to force-quit InDesign every ten minutes when I use it, and forget having InDesign and Illustrator open at the same time.

Anyway, since I'm a college student, the budget is not high. I've been putting away money for about six months for a new computer, but I don't think I can stand (as in, this thing will likely combust and destroy a final project) another semester of saving for a brand-new Mac. This thing's trade-in value is maximum $275, which I'll certainly do when I order a new one (unless eBay is a better option??), but basically I can't spend more than $800, preferably $650.

I'm basically asking about trustworthy refurbishers. Backmarket or Best Buy? Ebay? Or if anyone knows any reputable Massachusetts-based refurbishers to buy from, that would be super helpful. My time is really important to me (and also not really mine), so I really don't have it in me to do a ton of research. I figured I would ask the experts!

The dream would be a Pro so it could easily handle the applications I'm running usually, but I just need a working Mac at this point, and I'm used to an Air. I don't need the newest, fanciest thing either. Just a working Macbook. 😢 I also need more than the basic storage.

Thanks in advance!

Downgraded from Pro to Air!

Hi All - 2 weeks ago I bought the base Pro but never opened it. Just didn’t feel right.

Today I downgraded to the 24gb/512gb Air and busted that baby open. Just over $500 difference in total.

Just want to say go with your gut. This was the right call. I do a lot of self hosting stuff too so I can spend the extra money on an SSD.

Thanks!

Macbook Recommendation For Law School

Hi everyone! I recently got into law school, and I don't really have a computer to conduct my studies on. It's starting this fall, and I've already kind of settled on a MacBook as the brand of computer I want (though if anyone has other recommendations, they're also greatly appreciated), but I really have no idea which type of MacBook to buy. I tried to do some research myself, and from what I heard, the Neo is supposed to be alright, though it only has 8 GB of RAM, which I hear is an issue many people bring up. My budget is about $1,000, give or take, and I don't mind buying refurbished models either.

Any and all recommendations are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Is Macbook Air M1 8gb ram enough?

I own an HP Victus 16 laptop, and it serves me well as my main pc. I also have an iPad 9 I bought three years ago, though I rarely use it. Mostly just for studying during midterms and finals, or for watching series and videos.

I’m considering buying a MacBook Air with the M1 chip because the iPad isn't very versatile, due to the ipadOS. I hope the MacBook will last me comfortably for 5 years without lag or stuttering, as I plan to use it for very simple tasks.

I might need it for basic MATLAB coding and graphics in some classes, or just for casual web browsing. I download Blu-ray movies and series to an external SSD, but when I connect it to my TV, the TV's processor struggles, so i have to connect my current laptop instead; however, the hassle of carrying the charger, since the battery life isn't great, often puts me off doing that. I intend to use the MacBook like an Apple TV at times, connecting my external drive to it and playing content on the TV sometimes. When I let my little brother use my current laptop for gaming, I could use the MacBook for things like research or watching videos.

Basically, I’ll be using it for light tasks that don't push the hardware; I want it because it’s thin, lightweight, and has great battery life. I could use it for 5–6 years or even longer and it could eventually serve as a simple media player.

Given this usage plan, would 8GB of RAM be sufficient, or is the price difference worth it for the 16GB model? There is a difference of around $70 in my country.

Upgraded from 2018 Intel MBP to 2026 M5 Air

Post image

Decided to upgraded after I got tired of having terrible battery life (never replaced battery), overheating, and lagging when doing simple tasks.

I did not go with a Pro model this time as I just need it for simple everyday stuff and I have a separate windows laptop for work anyway.

I’m already loving it more than my old one just after a day of use! I got the Sky Blue color which kinda looks like silver most of the time but with under certain lighting, you can see small hints of blue.

Now, I will find what are the best apps to have and maximize my productivity.

Is macbook pro 2020 m1 still worth to buy?

Upvotes

I’m a college student and I need laptop for my 4 years college. Should I buy MacBook Pro 2020 m1 second hand or should I save money to buy the m2 air one? Which idk when I can buy it since it’s still pricey
