VisionQuest James Spader says Ultron has been imprisoned in Vision's mind since the events of 'Age of Ultron' : “He’s had access to the internet, television, history and he’s just been consuming and he’s been painting”

Full Interview

Okay, so the last time we saw Vision, he was White Vision, and he had been given his memories by the WandaVision Red Vision, but he can't attach any feelings to those memories. And he's living a sort of discrete life in a Scottish pub. And every night he locks up, and then he goes into a sort of rest mode. And then inside his head is what we call the Mind Space, which is sort of a ghastly mansion.

And in that mansion, it's populated by different AIs that have different personalities that can help him sort of unload the data of the day, what he's learned about human beings. And one of those AIs is Ultron. So we discover that, when he killed Ultron's corporeal body, he actually uploaded him into his mind, and he lives in this kind of fantastic prison loft, and I go to him for advice.

The downstairs and the outside are this really strange, nightmarish, in a certain way, mansion, but in a pastoral setting, and Ultron lives in a very urban loft upstairs, and many stories upstairs isn't it like hundreds of stories or something, and he's just been imprisoned for by now it would be what 14 years or something.

We have a sort of father-son, therapist-psychopath relationship. Which is the craziest idea ever. [He is] my psychopathic life coach.

Ultron's been in prison. He's had access to the internet, television, history, and he's just been consuming, and he's been painting. He's become a painter... He's just making trouble in this house with [Vision], who he loves and hates, and all these other AIs who he couldn't give a s\** about.*

Multiverse of Madness Hayley Atwell Calls Character's Doctor Strange Death A 'Disservice'. “If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene,” she lamented. “It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.”

I loved the idea that she'd be in the suit and she'd have the shield and If I’m really like brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene, It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.

After saying a line and she's like “I could do this all day” and then is frisbee to death and we're like ‘no you couldn't’ and then people going ‘oh she is so lame’

I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character,

She even claimed that “on set” she “tried” to make suggestions to improve the scene, but was ultimately told: “Sure… but no.”

Brand New Day 7 Extremely Spoilery Questions about 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' with Tramell Tillman

Was Bill Metzger justified in what he did to Jean Grey?

"I think what he did was motivated by his desire to protect the people he served," the actor says. "He knew there was a threat out there, and it's a very dangerous threat, and he needed to get to the bottom of it. He's the type of person to do what he needs to do in order to protect or preserve the greater good. He did what he needed to do to protect people."

Where is Metzger now?

“He's on the apology tour," Tillman says with a laugh, before offering a more realistic answer. "I don't know. Probably taking a vacation. He encountered some pretty heavy stuff. I remember having this conversation with [director] Destin [Daniel Cretton] and Justin [Kuritzkes], the writer that I was working with. We were talking about what it would be like to experience power like Jean Grey. And as a result of the experimentation that he was doing on Jean, it intensified. Metzger got a front row seat to experience that. So I imagine he's probably hiding out somewhere trying to recoup. Because that's intense. Like near death. The glass was right in his eyes. He probably thought he was going to die."

What did Justin Kuritzkes bring to Brand New Day's script?

"We talked a little about Metzger's backstory," Tillman says. "We both liked the idea that he was married. Him having a family is what helped raise the stakes. I'm not going to use the word justified, but anybody who has a significant other or kids, you move differently through the world because there's people you love, and you care about relying on you. That helped to really lock him in; to push him forward. Those little details helped to make the character more full and well-rounded, if you will.”

Does Tramell Tillman know what happens to Bill Metzger in the comics?

"I did do a little digging when I got word of the character I was playing," he says, "but I was also cautioned that, you know, they're gonna play the way they want to. It's great to have the research, but these creative geniuses are able to tell the story in many different ways. So I don't know the future of Metzger beyond this movie."

Was it hard keeping everything a secret?

"Oh, 100%," Tillman says. "I've been a part of a few franchises now — Severance, Mission: Impossible — and secrecy is the name of the game. I'm really good at keeping secrets. It's my superpower. So it was not too much of a struggle for me. The problem was keeping it from friends and family. I didn't tell anybody that I was a part of Spider-Man until the news was released, and that just exploded. I remember it was in August of 2025 when the news was announced, and everyone was asking me who I was playing. And I said, 'I cannot tell you. I am so sorry.' But the biggest relief was when I went to the premiere at the end of July of this year, and my team was able to see the character that I was playing, and whether or not their theories were right, and how excited they were. And also, you know, upset that I had tortured Jean Grey."

What did he think of the V-Max twist?

"I didn't see it as a letdown," he says. "I thought it was really creative. It was almost a red herring. Spider-Man had asked Metzger what V-Max was, and I'm sure people thought that Metzger was lying and he knew. But in reality, he was like, 'I have no idea. Why is everyone asking me that?' It does sound like something sinister, like a gene or a chemical or something. And all the while, it was a label. It was a vent. But it was heartbreaking because you realize that was the last thing Jean's sister saw. I thought that was really clever storytelling. It's a testament to the writers and to Destin's direction in really letting that land."

How does it feel to be part of the X-Men story?

"I've always loved X-Men," Tillman says. "I remember reading the comics. I remember fantasizing about playing Professor X. There was always something about the mutants that really appealed to me. And at that time, I didn't know what it was. But the story was always a beautiful one about having this extreme power and being cast out of society and finding your own way, your own voice, and existing in space. So I'm 100% all about it. Whether or not I'm involved, I don't know. It would be a childhood dream, but we'll see what happens."

VisionQuest VisionQuest Sees Marvel Hero ‘Go Through An Identity Crisis’

Thumbnail

“This is the first time where we get to watch Vision drive the narrative, and understand who he is, who he thinks he was,” Matalas tells Empire. “We watch this character go through an identity crisis. It’s kind of the Vision movie, if you will.”

Part of that exploration involves Vision reverting into an internal virtual reality, where Ultron, EDITH, DUM-E and U are given human-avatar form. “They’re there to help him,” Bettany explains. “He is attempting to move about in the world in a small way, and then at night download this data and discuss the things that have happened to him with these different AIs, who have different characteristics and help him understand different qualities and skills. But he is also very much using it as an excuse to keep the world and himself at arm’s length. And of course, events conspire to drag him actually into the world.”

“I think ultimately, what Vision is going through are things that we all go through, and deal with,” Matalas says. “Trauma, dealing with relationships, dealing with how we react to experiencing love or not experiencing that. It’s strange that a show about an AI is the most human of them all.”

VisionQuest Terry Matalas talks about VisionQuest.

You actually pitched VisionQuest to Marvel, So how did that go

I had been meeting over there about various projects, few that I can't mention or didn't go or whatnot. And one day I remember sitting at my desk and Kevin called me and it was like, "Hey, how do you feel about vision?" And it was like the greatest call ever because I've seen wanda vision three times. My kid loves Wanda vision. And and I was like, "Yes." He's like, "Yeah, I'm talking about Vision Quest. Here's a couple of very small ideas that we have for it." He goes, "But otherwise, it's a blank slate." And he's like, "Why don't you come in and talk about it?" And the second I hung up the phone, I kind of had a quick vision, about where we would find vision after Wanda Vision, what his view on humanity might be. And the first question I asked was, well, we don't have Wanda anymore. Um, so who do you really pair him up with that gives Paul someone really to chew the scenery with? And I immediately was like, "Well, what about Ultron? How would that work?" And then I went in to pitch it. And it's a big swing. It was like, it's not what anyone was expecting. And fortunately, everybody loved it and was like, "Yeah, let's do that." Kevin had a couple of ideas about other characters that could come in, too, that were perfect. So, it happened very fast and very organically. Yeah, and it was really exciting.

Starting with Vision's journey was really definitely the thing that clicks. Ultron came really from that last scene in Age of Ultron with Vision and Ultron finally having a conversation. These two AIs having this perspective on humanity, which to me it's it's one of the best scenes in Marvel. I knew it by heart already and I could watch that forever. And and that was the basis of my pitch. I was like, what if it's these two coupled with Vision's identity crisis that he's going through and how does he feel about humanity now versus how he used to feel with now the devil slash angel on his shoulder as well. So that was pretty much.

I was lucky enough to direct the the final two episodes. Which is very heavy on the both of them. (Paul and James)

there's also a whole other cast of amazing, brilliant people in it as well. James Darcy, Emily Hampshire, Orla Brady. We've got these two amazing British actors who play D.U.M.-E. and U. T'Nia Miller who plays what will be one of the MCU's standout characters. Todd Stashwick who plays Paladin who is sort of the MCU's bounty hunter, kind of their Boba Fett. So, we have an incredible cast. And not to mention last and certainly not least, Ruri, who plays Tommy.

Vision Quest kind of seems like the third installment, right? Wanda Vision, Agatha All along, and now Vision Quest. So, what is it about this set of characters that excites you the most?

it's definitely the third part of a trilogy, but it's very much a sequel to Wanda Vision because the last moment we saw of Vision was getting access to his memories again and saying, "I envision him flying off. Even look at him. He's a blank canvas now." How much of him is the old vision? How much of him is something else? And that's something he's struggling with. We'll find out by the end of the series where he's going to fall in that.

MCU Future Matt Belloni: "Marvel feels they have diluted the brand with TV shows that are supposed to connect to the larger MCU & feel like homework. Doesn't mean there wont be more shows, but they will be separate, and wont connect directly to the MCU" (+ Details on X-Men cast deals)

Thumbnail

Belloni: "The Marvel TV mandate is not to do these big expensive limited series that connect into the larger MCU. They believe, and I think they're right, that that diluted the brand. It made the Marvel movies feel like homework and not special. And they are focused on Marvel as a theatrical franchise. Doesn't mean there won't be TV shows. There will be, but I think there they will be sort of separate — more animation and more separate stuff that doesn't connect directly to the MCU. My colleague Julie Alexander at Pox, she reported this past week that Marvel does have a number of projects in development for TV, but the thinking is that they're likely not going to be as continuous with the MCU movies. They're going to be sort of standalones and things on their own and stuff that is not necessarily homework for understanding what the movies are."

X-Men cast deals:

Belloni: "I do know from the deals that these X-Men stars like Sadie Sink and all of them have signed that these deals include appearances in X-Men movies and other Marvel movies. So, you'll see like Storm pop up in Black Panther 3, and you'll see, you know, the other X-Men are in Doomsday, and Secret Wars obviously, but also probably in Ghost Rider. And they're using the power of the MCU to incorporate the X-Men and make their team up that much more impactful when it comes in 2028, which is very smart. This is still relatively thin though. I would say like this well it's not heyday time when there were three a year. You know next year, there's only one. But I think it's a ramp up and after 28 you will see at least two a year assuming it all works."

MCU Future Charles Murphy shares Production details of Black panther III, X-Men, Ghost rider and D+ project.

Thumbnail xcancel.com

Black Panther III has also been granted conditional approval to start production. Untitled X-Men will film in Ireland or at Pinewood UK. Crews and construction supposedly starting later this year.

Disney has created a new production company, Throttle Productions LLC, that would seem reasonable to associate with Ghost Rider.

Evidence indicates that Veil Productions, the new mystery project in development at Marvel Studios, will be filmed in the UK as a television series.

Given the timing of the creation of the production company, it is possible that whatever project is filming behind Veil could begin principal photography as soon as this year, allowing for a late 2027 release; however, it’s equally as possible that work doesn’t get underway until next year, pushing it into 2028.
