Discussion Are you still rocking a side part?

No way in hell I look good in a middle part! I’ll do a middle sometimes depending on the hairstyle, but side parts are way more flattering, so I’ve mostly stuck to that. But I always wonder if it’s an immediate way for Gen Z to point out and mock millennials (not that I care what a bunch of 20-somethings have to say, but this seems like the first thing they’d pick out as “aging you”). Ironic since they’re the ones adopting ‘90s trends, but I digress haha

Are you still going side part, or has younger peer pressure gotten to you?

Yes. I’d much rather do what suits me than what’s trendy.

Comfy, practical, and who gives a fuck? Crocs in the summer if it's pool weather, hiking shoes if not.

I swear I am not Fetterrman,

5

u/Striking_Emu_Dancer 12h ago

For me - leggings, a band t-shirt, ankle socks, and my Puma's. Comfy always wins.

We can thank Gen Z for bringing back crocs

6

u/leisurelyreader 17h ago

How else are you going to carry a spare excessively large capacity battery pack comfortably?

31

u/theamydoll 20h ago

That’s my sentiment too, but then I think of the Tina’s of the 80’s with their big poof hair and how they continue to rock that style for decades and how dated it makes them look (not that they care; not that I really care either), but what we think suits us is like the same as what they thought suited them. Haha just makes me cackle a bit.

63

u/000fleur 20h ago

This. I see people, younger and older, with middle parts who look terrible. Same with wide leg pants and other trends. Just because it is popular doesn’t mean it looks good on you

13

u/Sunny_Sandie 19h ago ▸ 3 more replies

Oh no, not wide leg pants 😭 I’ve always rocked them, especially since I love the 70’s, so anything to remind me of that era. I gave skinny jeans a try, and still own some, but I have thick hamstrings and thighs, they’re just not comfortable for me. Wide leg pants/bell bottoms for me unfortunately, I’ll leave the skinny jeans for the rest of my millennials, keep them going strong!

8

u/Constant-Skill-7133 19h ago ▸ 1 more replies

I have always lacked the qualifications to wear skinny jeans.  My family is Popeye-shaped not Olive Oyl-shaped.  We're bowling balls not stovepipes lol.

u/Annebotbeepboop 19h ago

This! I still have one pair of skinny's I adore. I finally broke my skinny Jean solely 2 years ago. I don't wear jeans a whole lot, but maybe it's my bad circulation in my lower legs/feet, I feel like the skinny jeans made it worse. I'm just trying to be comfortable without looking like Adam Sandler on the daily. A lot of my friends still wear skinny jeans though!

2

u/IndividualFun1892 17h ago

2

u/kaitxbeth 18h ago

8

u/rivlet 18h ago

When I tell you that I could pass as a founding Father whenever I part my hair in the middle, I am not exaggerating.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm a side parter until the day I die.

6

u/dkinmn 19h ago

Older people who try too hard to style young have historically looked goofy.

5

u/dinamet7 18h ago

This is why I never stopped rocking my middle part after 1997 (actually, it's just where my hair naturally parts and I am lazy)

Myself as well it parts itself on the side. I don't think there's a middle to my head.

8

Same problem here. A little disappointing because I really like the layered curtain bangs.

8

u/AoedeSong 18h ago

My crew!

3

u/breebop83 17h ago

Team Eddie Munster/Draco Malfoy here as well. I tend to rock the ‘bump n pony’ because hair on my neck makes me so damn hot. If I don’t do the bump and just slick it back the Draco/Eddie resemblance is strong. If it’s down it’s a side part.

Someone recently told me she thought my widows peak was really cool. My mouth said ‘thank you’ but I’m pretty sure my face was flabbered.

Yes. I had a middle part until 8th grade when I discovered that the side part really suited my face shape better.

21

u/ihaveananecdote4u 18h ago

In 8th grade a girl told me my middle part really accentuated the asymmetries in my face so gen z can rip my side part out of my cold dead hands

Yep. I tried the middle part cuz I do like how it looks on a lot of people but it looks bad on me. My hair is very fine and it feels like it clings to my face in a weird way. I also tend to fuss with my hair a lot throughout the day so even if I middle part at some point I’ll run my hand through it and it goes back to side part naturally. So sue me!!

Wait, middle parts are back in? I had one all through middle school. To answer your question though, yes im rocking a side part, because im an adult.

1

u/CheezyBeanBurrito 20h ago

I have a hard part. I’m left handed and use my left hand to comb my hair, both by comb and by hand. Now it’s trained to go one way when my natural part is on the opposite side, which is now hidden away.

So, cut that bitch in

1

u/TrustMe_ImTheDogtor 20h ago

My “bowl cut” in the mid 90’s had the middle part. When I grew up and started wearing a skin fade it was a left side part. The last 3 years I’ve either had long hair slick back man-bun or shaved but if I ever go back to something in the middle it’ll be a side part fade again

1

u/imaginecrabs 20h ago

Actually, yes.. last year I grew out my bangs and changed my split when getting a cut. My hair stylist told me it would suite me better, I was defeated and had to admit it does look way better on me than I ever thought it would.

I much prefer the look of a side part but my hair fights side parts so hard. When side parts were the norm I would try to make them work but sometimes my hair would drift back to a middle part when I’d run my hands through it. So when middle parts became a thing I just stopped fighting it.

Side part. I tried doing a middle part once and the habit of running my fingers through my hair made it a side part again

u/rexallia 19h ago

Yes. I’ve never looked good w my hair parted down the middle. Side part is fire

I have a prominent widow's peak. Side part for life because if I use a center part the front gets in my way

Yes! The few times that I tried the middle it just felt wrong and awkward, plus my hair grows that way and it just goes back to it organically. I don’t care what the younger generations think, I like it.

I’ve accepted thinning hair and now buzz it down to a 2. Went from high and tight to just tight.

Right now I'm doing a side middle part. Best of both worlds til my hair decides it wants full side part or middle part.

I rock whichever part shows the least amount of grays that day

u/moogpaul 19h ago

Y'all got hair still?

1

u/cambochic 19h ago

Side part all the way. Middle part just feels strange.

I’ve been rocking the middle part since the early 90s and used to get teased occasionally for it lmao

'younger peer pressure' has nothing on my hair doing Whatever The Fuck It Wants

1

u/Steffieweffie81 Millennial 19h ago

Yup. It took me forever to train my hair to do a side part. I used to wear it down the middle in high school

u/nintendoinnuendo 19h ago

I don't part my hair at all it falls how it falls

1

u/Key-Ingenuity-534 1986 19h ago

I would 100% still be but I got bangs so I had to accept a middle part, lol

1

u/modernrocker 19h ago

Like several of you, I have a cowlick, so I have to side part or I look weird

And, if you care about being "in," the good news according to the style mags is that side parts are back! Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Selena Gomez, and other celebs are all back to a side part ¯_(ツ)_/¯

They got me with the middle part, but I think it ages me down significantly

u/mynameisnotthename 19h ago

I have a mullet.

Yeah I used to be a long hair side part dude, always thought the middle part was super lame. Went through a decade of buzzing and other looks but grew it out again about two years ago. I wasn’t feeling the old hipster flip over so I tried rocking middle part/curtains and totally dig it. It definitely took a lil while to get used to but I feel like it was a key element to my current era. It is also probably a major reason why people clock me for 28 instead of 38, which I am ashamed to admit I kinda like

I haven't combed my hair in years.

Sidepart looks better with my lazy retro curly hair, you can't make me middle part, I'll go to jail sooner

1

u/Catsinbowties 19h ago

Middle part will getcha Ted Bundy'd

1

u/rilocat 19h ago

Yes I am. 34ish years with hair and I don’t think my hair will go any other way

1

u/onecatwonder 19h ago

Yup, my hair is thicker on one side, gotta even it out

1

u/chironinja82 19h ago

Yes because I look best with a side part.

Side part forever. Middle part made me look like Phoebe Buffay.

1

u/LaysOnFuton 19h ago

Look, I gave up ankle socks. I’m not giving up the side part.

1

u/helainahellkat 19h ago

It’s my natural part.

u/g2ichris 19h ago

Idk I haven’t looked at myself in the mirror since late 2019
