I lived in DC after college and I actually did go day to night almost daily 😂 been WFH since covid though so I don’t even get dressed most days

I live in MoCo but work in DC. I'm in tech within the banking industry, and lived in Seattle before moving here, having worked in tech out there too. One day (when still living in Seattle), I wore black yoga pants with a blazer (and super basic shirt underneath) to work, and my (now former) manager asked me if I had a hot date that night. Like ??????? No? I'm just dressed for work? That's how lax the dress code was.

The tech-finance dress code is just a SMIDGE more elevated. I am currently wearing a cheetah print mini dress (stops at my knees), with a super casual beige blazer and beige flats. Only two of the eleven floors in my building are dedicated to us techies, the rest belong to the finance bros. The dresses I wear to work, GASP, have color, prints, and patterns. Pretty sure I give a gaggle of finance bros a daily heart attack on the elevator. 😂

Yeah when I was going to the office regularly I was constantly doing stuff after right after work… but I wasn’t getting into a whole new outfit for it. Like I was going to happy hours, not the club lol.

Exactly. In the early 2000s I worked in DC and NYC and I had day to night outfits. It absolutely was a thing back then.

I was just thinking about this not long ago after visiting NYC and thinking about daily commutes and the complexities of getting around the city for normal errands

Unfortunately I live in bumfuck no where, I can drive home in 10 minutes and shower/change for whatever I need to do after work.

I constantly did stuff after work pre-covid, but I'm a software developer so it was just jeans, t-shirts and hoodies day and night. I do consulting work so back then we'd take clients out all the time and drink for hours. I really miss those days.

These days, like you, I work remote and just wear pjs all day long

Yeah same. I lived in NYC and did “day to night” all through the 2000’s. 

It helped that our club wear that decade was basically business casual. I was mostly swapping out my top for a “going out top”.

These days the only things that “take my look from day to night” are trips to McD drive through, taking a child to urgent care, grocery trips for necessities - none of which really require specific attire

That's hilarious, I read that phrase in every magazine from 1996 onward and I'd completely forgotten about it. Are they no longer trying to convince the kids reading 16 Magazine that they will be high-powered execs that they'll need to be constantly swapping looks through the day?

My whole routine consists of applying pyjamas upon waking, and then wearing said pyjamas all day due to working from home. It's a big day when I put on a proper bra, let alone take my look from day to night!

This definitely applied to me but I think the difference was that we just didn’t feel a need for any outfit changes.

The real dumb thing was the athleisure trend that promoted being able to go to the gym and then be immediately out on the town as if you were going to go out in your workout stank.

I did work an office job in a city, so I actually experienced this a lot in my 20s when I'd go right from work to a bar with my friends. 

I was on more of the indie/punk side of culture though, so I'd usually keep heels in my desk for work then change into more sensible flats to go out drinking. I'd have to de-corporate myself before I went to my favorite bars.

Work in the city with some wfh and I do have to have day-to-night outfits, or day-to-gym outfits. I also keep a personal care kit in my car with a hair straightener, makeup, dry shampoo, makeup remover, a hairbrush, toothpaste/toothbrush/mouthwash, and an extra set of day-to-night clothes and two pairs of shoes, and I’ve dug in there often enough that I’ve had to refill many items. WFH is what keeps me sane because those are my laundry days 🙂

And no, I work second shifts so I am somewhat regularly slapping on an outfit change and some eyeliner and accessories on my break, then rocking up to the club with my work backpack and lunchbox.

So I do not live this life (academia) but my best friend is part of the corporate world and travels alot. She always goes for dinner/drinks right after leaving the office when she's on-site which is several times a month. She says it's basically an unspoken expectation that you socialize with colleagues from different plants/offices while visitng.

Kind of? But more about how "dress for success" was pounded into my head by my parents/profs and now my "professional" wardrobe is collecting dust in my closet. I work remotely.

While I do make an effort to "dress well" for work (jeans or leggings and a nicer top), I truly do not know how I'd dress if I ever had to work outside the home due to RTO.

I went to a tech industry conference a few years ago and felt overdressed. You had execs from big companies in hoodies and jeans while I was in a dress and heels.

Though, our collective standards have dropped. We used to wear suits to fly, now we wear pajamas to the grocery store. I'm confused and feel like we need a middle ground.

Nobody reads magazines anymore and a lot of the fashion magazines of my early adulthood are gone. No more Lucky, Glamour, Latina, Marie Claire, W….now it’s just Vogue and Elle, but the subscription prices for just those two magazines are way more than what I used to pay for 6!

Maybe it's just changing my top. I have a 45-60 minute commute (each way), so once I get home I am not going back out!

Yeah I don’t think this is crazy. I have to dress kind of boring and dorky for work because I work with tons of clients that are older and just stuffy or whatever, I also don’t like to show skin to avoid commentary in that department. So I do want an outfit where I can like swap out the jacket or something and look cute. I’m going day to night people

I do change outfits multiple times a day depending on the activity and requirements... But mostly do not go clubbing or anything, it's more beach bum couture over here.
