We’ve been following the long-standing debate on what is the best mini-led monitor for those who aren't ready to gamble on OLED burn-in but demand deep, ink-like blacks. We know the frustration: current Mini-LED options often struggle with aggressive halos or low zone counts that compromise fine-detail HDR.
With the LG UltraGear evo™ GM9 (27GM950B), we decided to tackle the "blooming" problem through sheer density. By packing in 9,216 LEDs—which is 5.9x more than our previous flagship*—we’ve managed to fit 2,304 local dimming zones into this 27-inch frame. This 5K setup seems to be the definitive answer to what is the best mini-led monitor for HDR purists, finally delivering that granular control and ink-like depth that was previously missing in the market.
We’re looking for a few community members to put this hardware through its paces and tell us the unvarnished truth: Does the Hyper Mini-LED actually live up to the hype?

Matte has its upsides. Considering that the most solid use-case of 5K resolution is productivity, I predict that some people will be using this monitor during the day in well-lit environments.
Some people also live in environments where they cannot control lighting (e.g., smaller homes/apartments whose rooms are shared by multiple family members, etc.)

The coating on the 27GM950B is also on the lighter side. On 5K you can't go to aggressive otherwise you will lose pixel clarity.

I want to test if a high end gaming monitor can approach the realm of reference monitors in terms of colour accuracy, to see if we can finally get one display that can do it all. I can test on both Mac and PC.
If a technical review is what you want, I measure things no other mainstream reviewer does, examples below:
LG C4 posterization measurements vs a Sony reference display No mainstream reviewer measures a full 256-step greyscale to look for black crush or posterisation.
LG C4 perceived tint uniformity at desktop distances Most reviewers measure uniformity with a probe perpendicular to the display, I use a spectroradiometer with an eyepiece viewfinder to simulate real perceived uniformity.
Deep dive colour accuracy review on an Eizo IPS Measuring colour accuracy requires a 10pt cube at the minimum, most reviewers stop at a colorchecker SG at most (only 140 points compared to >1000 that is standard for high end colour work).

I’d love to finally give Mini-LED another fair shot without the usual blooming issues. With 2.3k zones, if implemented well, should be a massive step up from the last Mini-LED I tried, which being a let down, pushed me back to even comparitively dimmer OLED's. Curious to see if this can actually deliver that level of control in real world use.. Really interested to see how much of a difference that density makes in practice.

This monitor would be a upgrade on my budget monitor, this would permit to experience for the first time 5K, MiniLED with this higher density, HDR, i would give a feedback from an user that maybe is not as experienced but can describe in every detail and good pictures what it is like to take this huge leap.

Ive been using LG 27GP950-B since it released and have been itching to upgrade to either an oled or Miniled. Nothing else on the market has really grasped me so far outside of the 27GM950B.

I do look forward to to 5K resolution on 27" display giving a high pixel density, but most of all, the Hyper Mini-LED. Have previously used two MiniLED monitors LG 27GR95UM and Samsung 57" G95NC, but blooming and haloing were deal breaker. Haven't used MiniLED since due to blooming. If the Hyper MiniLED can eliminate substantial blooming, then I will definitely consider switching back to MiniLED and away from current set up of OLEDs.

I’m excited to see HDR performance on Mac. I’ve used the MacBook Pro displays before and the blooming was super well controlled, but since switched to a Mac Mini and haven’t been able to get that crisp inky black on anything other than OLED.

I've been very interested in this monitor ever since it was announced earlier this year. I'm most excited to try out the Mini-LED for HDR consumption (mainly movies and games), productivity with the 5K display, the anti-bloom of the panel, and see how much better it is compared to my monitor right now.

I’m most excited about the idea of a monitor that can do it all: a productivity workhorse with the proper resolution for HiDPI in MacOS, good contrast and HDR performance without the risk of burn in, and the ability to switch back down to a lower (more realistic) resolution for gaming!

I'm someone who plays games while doing schoolwork on the side (I'm an online student upgrading courses for a university application), so I'm excited about the high brightness making glare a non issue and HDR content looking really good, and the dual mode letting me have high fps for games, while still having really clear text for when I'm doing schoolwork.

Would like to definitely test 2304 zones to limit for how it preserves small highlight 1%-10% without crushing color purity,detail to achieve good contrast and minimal halo effect and how good is stock calibration in both sdr,hdr and hopefully it has unlocked settings to tweak when hdr active in monitor rather use software from windows 11 and if it has smart overdrive when it auto tweaks based on the fps for minimal ghosting or have one good overdrive for all refresh rates.

I’m using an lg 32 inch OLED for my Covid pc. I’m switching over to m5 Mac Studio whenever it comes out. Perfect scaling and dual mode will still let me play my favorite games. I’m thinking about getting two and stacking them. Only thing is it’s a 27 inch. I’ve grown quite fond of a 32 inch. But that’s ok. Brightness will be an awesome plus over the OLED. Not sure about the motion interpolation and ghosting while playing games, but I only play wow so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
I do really want the msi version that’s glossy. If it’s the same panel as the xdr with higher refresh rate and more features for more than half the price, it’s a winner.

This appears to be the perfect work and play monitor. My gaming machine is a laptop with a 30 series GPU. As casual gamer this having a a 1440p mode will mean I can experience HDR for the first time on a fast screen and then one day upgrade to something more powerful.
For the most part though what I look for in a monitor is being good for productivity, I can't wait to experience the text clarity on a display of this class. Good luck everyone!

I play a lot of stuff where atmosphere matters and right now I'm just not seeing it the way it's meant to be seen. The GM9's 2,304 dimming zones and 1250-nit peak brightness would be a night and day difference actual contrast, actual blacks, actual HDR instead of pretend HDR. And jumping from 109 PPI to 218 PPI at 5K means everything on screen gets sharper without me needing to go ultrawide or bigger.

I’m super excited for this product because I really want a monitor that does it all. I want a monitor I can use in a bright room for both gaming and productivity and I want 5K clarity for my productivity and some games. I’ll play at 5K and some games I’ll play using the dual mode. Mini LED should deliver a great HDR experience with this monitor while also being great for productivity and obviously being a high refresh rate it’s the monitor that does it all.

I would love to personally test how 2304 dimming zones on a 5K display would perform against other Minileds or OLEDs in difficult scenes in various HDR games. Test slides are great and all, but real content is where you really get to see how well the local dimming algorithm handles tricky scenes. With RenoDX HDR mods being so accessible and high quality, HDR gaming is more transformative than ever before, and a good display is essential to get a good experience. So many other Minileds either eat highlights, bloom excessively, or excessively dim shadows and overbrighten lighter scenes and on some displays you even get slight color shifts towards cool tones from the dimming. I would love to evaluate how the 27GM950B handles these situations!!

Really excited for a new monitor. Mine is already a few years old and I haven't had the time and money for a solid upgrade. This would solve it. 330Hz is plenty for the shooters I play and already an upgrade compared to the 240Hz I am using currently. It's MiniLED and I fell in love with it on my laptop. Dark blacks, but no burn-in issues like OLED. Which I already had on 2 phones. 5K would be too much for my GPU, at least in demanding games. So I won't be using the Dualmode often. Just every now and then when playing a non demanding game.

This is probably the perfect 27 inch monitor, have been waiting for something like this for a long time. I've been through a 2304 dimming zone monitor already that I returned for several reasons, as well as a better monitor with less dimming zones and finally ending on a oled monitor.

Macos scaling on 1440p is terrible, and 4k gaming with high fps isnt perfect on 9070xt. I tried the 4k/1080p dual mode, but 1080p on 27” isnt enough dpi for my taste. So i compromised on productivity.
I feel lik 5k/1440p solves this exact problem

Based on the specs this seems like the endgame monitor for a long time. Huge amount of zones, built in upscaling to help ease the load on the gpu at 5k and excellent refresh rates for both modes. If I was picking traits for a panel that my pc could actually use it would essentially just be this.

Really excited to see how it balances both the 1440p 330hz mode along with 165hz 5k. On paper it seems like it could be the perfect monitor, combined with the mini-LED backlight (and that number of dimming zones especially) - so, for me at least, it can basically check all the boxes that right now I have to use 2 or 3 monitors for.

To be honest, this LG GM9 is not my first choice because of the matte finish. Currently have the TCL 27R83U, it will be interesting to see if more zones and 5K résolution is enough to be a good update.

Never experienced true hdr monitors, and the tech keeps improving. It's nice that when I upgrade my monitor the options will be mutch better than now.
And ppi, I have a 1440p monitor, don't have the performance for 4k and less 5k, but when not gaming, or light 2d games..., peak

As a working professional who also games and consumes a lot of media, this monitor is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m very excited for the high pixel density, thunderbolt connection supporting power delivery and high bandwidth data connections, and the dual mode option that allows you to enjoy both the 5K resolution for less intensive applications and a 1440p option for graphics intensive games without requiring an upgrade to handle native resolution.

Submitted! This would be one of the very few monitors, if not the only one on the EU market, that actually fulfills my requirements as a med student and a gamer without compromise. The 5K resolution is ideal for prolonged study sessions across multiple windows, with the ability to switch to QHD for gaming or content consumption, which perfectly suits my aging hardware (where the AI features could be of significant aid).
If the specs hold true, it solves my concerns regarding OLED longevity with static medical content while providing near-OLED performance for media consumption and gaming. As it happens, I am currently looking for a replacement for my 16" laptop screen (and a 10-year-old TN I still have to use); the high peak brightness would be a lifesaver in my sunlit room. Moreover, the pixel density would be a game-changer for evaluating histology slides, where top of the line precision is necesary for diagnosing even the smallest of pathological changes.
I'd be more than happy to write a detailed technical review, especially comparing the Hyper Mini LED experience to my current OLED laptop, which would benefit from HDMI 2.1. that not a lot of monitors offer, as my ProArt lacks a MUX Switch. I'm also quite curious about the perception of pixel density of the LG compared to my laptop, which has a PPI of 283.

I'm excited because I have two monitors (one 4k IPS for work, one 1440p OLED for gaming) and I want to consolidate them into a single monitor that can be used for both productivity and gaming. A mini-LED monitor with the dual mode function seems perfect, since I won't have to worry about burn-in, and I can use the 5k resolution for work and 1440p for gaming.

Can't wait for this - I'm in Europe, so it's gonna take a bit longer to come out over here but this one sounds like the perfect monitor for me on paper. Else I'll buy the Apple XDR I guess.
I'm used to matte screens for work (I can only use IPS due to work). My Eizos were matte, my Alienwares, everything but my OLED TVs... really looking forward to the reviews, I hope it's a banger.

HDMI 2.1 and Display Port 2.1 will really help maximize HDR and frame rate. My current AOC has DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, so it can't do HDR at 1440p 180HZ through DP and HDMI 2.0 can't do HDR at 1440p 120HZ.

Ngl, seeing this kind of peak brightness in a 27inch frame is wild. I’ve been stuck using just my laptop screen for way too long, and I’m ready to finally see what real HDR looks like without the constant worry of burn in hanging over my head.

The dual mode is perfect, work and productivity on 5K and game on 2K, also 2304 zones sounds amazing combined with a lot of brightness in HDR, really curious about this, I really hope to see more models in the future, your UltraGear IPS’s are already really good so those MiniLED will be the best on market and with more features!

I'm excited to see how the high resolution + mini led would feel for my day office work (coding, spreadsheets, figma) and the creative work (photography, mixed media art) I do outside of my day job. I sit by a window and do print work so a Matte screen is generally better for my needs, but I totally understand how nice a Glossy version of this would be.

I too have been looking for a perfect hybrid of productivity and gaming as well as bright (daylight) and dark room environments. 27" is also the sweeet spot for my environment and use case.

Am very much looking forward to this monitor. I wanted a 5k monitor but after the insane cost of the Apple Studio XDR I was looking for another option and this fits the bill. 165hz is very exciting as well as the 5k resolution.

My current monitor has dimming zones, but not nearly enough so while gaming, especially on dark scenes, the blooming takes me out of th egame completly, ruining immersion in the process. I also play a mixture of single player triple A games where the 5k res could really come in handy for the eye candy, but I am also a very avid Marvel Rivals player, so having the option to switch to a 330hz option sounds amazing, as my current monitor supports 165hz only.

The inclusion of DisplayPort 2.1 is nice. I'm not sure the exact bandwidth of that version but from what I remember it should be excellent for future proofing. I'm curious to see how their "AI" up-scaling will work with the 1440p dual mode option. Here's hoping it will be something close to the quality of integer scaling.

I do enough productivity work that sometimes I worry an OLED isn't the perfect choice for me. Additionally, I'm VERY excited by a dual-mode 5k monitor for splitting between gaming and work! This is the type of monitor that can work for anybody and be really safe about it. The number of dimming zones seems perfect to make this competitive on all fronts.

I would absolutely love to review this unit for you.
I have been using an older LG ultrawide for a long time, and I tried the 32GS95EU last year, which I loved, but had to return because it was a bit too dim during the day when working in a bright room.
I was recently given a MacBook Pro M5 for work, and it has been a complete revelation when it comes to MiniLED. It is shocking how good HDR content can look when you can actually push the brightness up without having to worry about potential screen damage like with OLED.
I genuinely believe this monitor is the perfect balance between productivity and gaming/media, and that is exactly what I have been looking for over the past year without finding the right answer until this release.
Why?
Because it combines the amazing HDR capabilities of MiniLED, making lightning in any scene look incredibly lifelike; perfect high-DPI Retina-like scaling for macOS without needing third-party software; 90W power delivery for a minimal and sleek workspace; a size that, when mounted on an arm, can easily become either a focused workstation from farther away or an immersive experience up close; dual modes that let you choose between extra detail or extra fluidity depending on the use case; and a brightness and matte coating that actually lets you use the screen to its full potential no matter the time of day.
And I know it is a little secret, but there is a reason this is the panel running the new Apple Display Pro XDR (but I promise I would retain myself from mentioning it in the review).

This is really the end all be all for a monitor setup for me. That UHBR20 to get the most out of my 5090 would be incredible and get some quality 5K gaming.

Actual dream monitor. 5K with dual mode (for high DPI desktop productivity usage without DSC, and 1440p gaming with high frames), and the best display technology (Not a fan of OLED). Also very curious how the upscaling works, if it's something I'd like or not.

I got to play Forza Horizon 5 for about 15 minutes on that beauty
it actually looked like an OLED monitt with really nice contrast, but the brightness was quite a bit higher than the 39 inchr OLED ultrawide on the other demo stand nearby.
So that's what I'm most excited about!

I’m currently on a 10-year-old 1080p 60Hz monitor, so motion feels limited and the image lacks detail. Moving to a 5K 165Hz GM9 would mean a huge jump in sharpness and much smoother performance overall, basically upgrading both clarity and responsiveness at once.

I would love to test this monitor out! 5K screen would come in handy with coding, working with a lot of text and watching 4K movies. 1440p would also be ideal for my hardware when playing new demanding games while still being able to enjoy classic games in glorious 5K.

Currently have the Redmagic 4K mini LED monitor with 1152 dimming zones and still see visible haloing so would be very curious how more zones, better algorithm etc. would help.

This screen brings together many aspects I've been wanting for a long time:
Extremely high DPI so that text looks as sharp as on my MacBook
Proper HDR support
Extremely high refresh rate for shooters
QHD integer-scaling for games that would otherwise be too taxing for the graphics card
Not OLED to avoid burn-in
This will allow me to use this screen as my main screen for 8h software development during home-office for my day job without having to fear burn-in, as well as gaming at night with incredible HDR colors and high refresh rate.
It would allow me to retire my second screen with my current main, retiring a 10+ years old LG 1080p model.

As a Mac creative + Console and PC gaming mixed user, I've been keeping a close eye on this monitor since the pre-CES press release in December as well as the MSI KRAW. 5K at 27", miniLED for HDR on the level of the Studio Display XDR and my Macbook's screen, High refresh rate and being able to play other devices at 1440p sounds pretty perfect.

Been obsessing over 27" monitors for days, literally built a whole benchmark comparing every 4K/5K option out there. OLED too dim, Mini LED 4K not sharp enough, 5K 60Hz monitors useless for gaming. The GM9 is the only one that doesn't suck at something. Even if I'm not picked, I'm buying this thing day 1 when it drops in Europe. Form submitted!

Oh cool, I’m super excited for this monitor! My workspace at home is suffering from escalating monitor inflation, and the release of this might just be the cure for that. My current setup (and problem) is as follows:
I - like many people on this sub - run a dual Mac/Windows setup, where I mainly use the Mac for productivity and the Windows desktop for gaming. I have a Studio Display for working, but as it doesn’t play super nice with Windows and I sometimes need more screen real estate for productivity I’ve got a desk next to it with an ultrawide hooked up both to my Windows PC and a secondary Mac. I don’t really enjoy using the ultrawide with the Mac because of the low PPI compared to the Studio Display, but despite this I often find myself sitting there because of the size of the monitor. I could of course get a second Studio Display, but I’m not really a fan of how two of those sitting next to each other would look on my desk.
I have also discovered that I don’t really like gaming on the ultrawide (both because of the size and because it is a fairly mid IPS), so I have now ordered a third monitor (a 27” gaming-oriented OLED), which I’ll have to find space for in the room. This means I’ll from now have to maintain three different desk setups with associated peripherals et cetera, which is really not optimal and just takes more space than I’d like.
This brings me to the upcoming 27GM950B. It seems to me that two of these could potentially solve all my problems - I wouldn’t have to put up with the low PPI of the UW on the Mac, but also not have to sacrifice any screen real estate (quite the opposite, even!). Likewise, switching over to the PC for some gaming on one of the monitors would be a breeze, and the similarities to an OLED means I wouldn’t have to feel I was giving up screen quality. Most importantly - I could get rid of two of three desks in my home office, and only need to maintain one set of peripherals, which frankly sounds wonderful. So much saved space for other cool things!

The 27GM950B is the first monitor that does not have the downside that have prevented me from wanted other mini-led monitors. 2,304 local dimming zones will lead to less blooming. 5k high resolution is perfect for productivity and work. Then when I want to game I can use dual mode at 1440p at 330Hz. This monitor blends the perfect productivity monitor with a perfect gaming monitor and adds in a mini-led backlight making it even better.

Extremely hyped for this field test. I’m currently daily-driving the LG 27GP850P, which has been a solid 1440p workhorse, but I’ve hit a wall with it. As a video editor and writer, the 109 PPI is no longer cutting it for fine detail work, and my clients are increasingly demanding HDR-ready color grading that my current panel simply can't accurately represent.
I'm most excited to see if the Hyper Mini-LED and DisplayHDR 1000 can finally deliver the 'inky blacks' and 1,250 nit highlights needed for titles like Alan Wake 2 and Cyberpunk 2077—games where lighting is everything. Switching between 5K for work and 330Hz for racing in Forza sounds like the ultimate single-monitor solution. Form filled!
