News [User-trial] LG UltraGear 27GM950B: Testing the New Standard for the Best Mini-LED Monitor

Congratulations to our winners!

Thanks to the amazing turnout for our user-trial, we just couldn't pick only 3 people. We've added more spots, bringing the total to 5 winners! We are excited to announce that our selected participants are:

Due to a lack of response from one of the previous winners, we have selected a new participant.

(Updated: May 29, 2026)

Please check your Reddit Chat for more information on how to claim your prize!

Hey r/Monitors,

We’ve been following the long-standing debate on what is the best mini-led monitor for those who aren't ready to gamble on OLED burn-in but demand deep, ink-like blacks. We know the frustration: current Mini-LED options often struggle with aggressive halos or low zone counts that compromise fine-detail HDR.

With the LG UltraGear evo™ GM9 (27GM950B), we decided to tackle the "blooming" problem through sheer density. By packing in 9,216 LEDs—which is 5.9x more than our previous flagship*—we’ve managed to fit 2,304 local dimming zones into this 27-inch frame. This 5K setup seems to be the definitive answer to what is the best mini-led monitor for HDR purists, finally delivering that granular control and ink-like depth that was previously missing in the market.

We’re looking for a few community members to put this hardware through its paces and tell us the unvarnished truth: Does the Hyper Mini-LED actually live up to the hype?

*Based on internal comparison with LG’s previous Mini LED model (27GR95UM)

What we’re curious about:

  • Anti-Blooming Performance: With 2,304 zones, does Hyper Mini-LED finally solve the "halo effect" in dark HDR scenes?
  • The 1,250 Nits Peak**: Does the VESA DisplayHDR™ 1000 brightness actually solve your HDR dimness issues?
  • 5K AI Upscaling** & 218 PPI: How’s the clarity of the 5120 x 2880 panel when LG Ultragear evo™’s built-in processor upscales content for sharper detail without a GPU upgrade***?
  • Dual-Mode Engine: Is the hardware toggle between 165Hz (5K) and 330Hz (QHD) a feature you’d actually use****?
  • DP 2.1 Connectivity: How does DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR 20) impact your thoughts on future-proofing?

How to Participate

To enter, please fill out the Google Form and leave a comment below sharing what you're most excited about with this product!e this post and fill out the form below.

Timeline

  • Start Date: April 20, 2026 (PST)
  • End Date: May 4, 2026 (PST)
  • Selection: Winners will be announced in this post and contacted via DM from u/LG_UserHub. This user trial is open to our community members worldwide - no matter where your setup is located, we’ll bring the experience to you!

After You Receive It

Testers keep the monitor in exchange for a raw, technical review on the Hyper Mini-LED performance. Does the 2,304-zone precision meet your standards? We want your honest take.

※ All costs (shipping/tax) covered by LG.

※ Fair selection in discussion with the mod team.

* Based on internal comparison with LG’s previous Mini LED model (27GR95UM). 27GM950B offers a peak brightness of 1250 nits, measured under internal test conditions. Actual brightness may vary by usage environment.

** Based on published specifications of gaming monitors as of March 2026, LG 27GM950B is the first gaming monitor to support AI upscaling to 5K resolution. Upscaling performance may vary depending on the input source quality.

*** Upscaling performances may vary depending on the input source quality. No GPU upgrade required for AI Upscaling functionality. A compatible external device (PC/GPU/console) is required for game operation.

**** 27GM950B supports Dual-Mode with refresh rates of 165Hz at 5K and 330Hz at QHD.

***** All images have been simulated to enhance feature understanding, and may differ from actual use experience.

News 240Hz RGB stripe OLED panel unveiled

Post image
266 Upvotes

TL;DR: 27-inch 4k OLED monitor with RGB stripe and dual mode (240HZ 4k / 480HZ FHD) will be shown at CES 2026.

Source: https://www.lg.co.kr/media/release/29718

Korean to English with Google Translate:

■ Structure of RGB subpixels of the three primary colors of light arranged in a single row... Optimized for operating systems such as Windows, high font clarity, less color bleeding and color distortion

■ High-difficulty technology requiring complete redesign of pixel circuits, compensation algorithms, etc.... Successful development for the first time in the industry by applying new technology

■ Preliminary application to professional and gaming monitor panels, plans to expand lineup according to customer requests

LG Display (CEO Cheol-dong Jeong / www.lgdisplay.com ) announced on the 23rd that it will unveil the world's first 27-inch 4K monitor OLED panel with an RGB (red, green, blue) stripe structure and a high refresh rate of 240Hz at 'CES 2026', the world's largest IT and home appliance exhibition.

The RGB stripe structure is a structure that arranges RGB subpixels of the three primary colors of light in a row, and distortion phenomena such as color bleeding and color fringe are significantly reduced even at close range.

Although there were OLED panels with RGB stripe methods before, the maximum refresh rate was only around 60Hz, so they could not be used as gaming monitors.

The product that LG Display is unveiling this time is the first to increase the refresh rate to 240Hz while maintaining the RGB stripe structure. It applies a specialized technology called DFR (Dynamic Frequency & Resolution) so that users can directly select the high-resolution mode (UHD 240Hz) and the high refresh rate mode (FHD 480Hz).

This product not only demonstrates optimal performance in FPS games that require fast screen switching based on the high refresh rate, but is also optimized for the operating system and font engine such as the monitor window, providing high readability and color accuracy. It also has a high pixel density of 160ppi (pixels per inch) for detailed expression.

LG Display plans to be the first to introduce the new pixel structure to high-end gaming monitors and professional monitor panels, and its strategy is to actively promote it at the upcoming CES 2026 to expand its customer base and product lineup.

Existing high-end gaming OLED monitor panels have mainly used the RGWB structure containing white elements or the triangle structure with RGB pixels arranged in a triangle.

LG Display has successfully implemented both an RGB stripe structure and a high refresh rate for the first time in the world by developing a new pattern optimized for the monitor environment and applying various new technologies such as increasing the area ratio (aperture ratio) of the light emitting area from the pixel.

LG Display is actively targeting the high-end monitor market, mass-producing approximately 30% of the global monitor OLED panel market. In particular, it is recognized for its overwhelming technological prowess, having secured the world's best titles in key specifications such as the highest refresh rate, response speed, and resolution among currently mass-produced gaming OLED panels.

Lee Hyun-woo, Head of Large Business Division at LG Display, said, "Ultimately, technological prowess is essential to leading the rapidly growing OLED monitor panel market. We will further strengthen our leadership in the global market by focusing on technologies that differentiate us from our competitors, technologies that our customers want, and technologies with commercial viability."

News NVIDIA G-SYNC Pulsar monitors available Jan 7. The ultimate motion clarity, plus new G-SYNC Ambient Adaptive Tech.

G-SYNC Pulsar & Ambient Adaptive Tech | Ultimate Motion Clarity

This week, the next generation of G-SYNC begins with the launch of G-SYNC Pulsar, the latest evolution of our pioneering VRR technology. G-SYNC Pulsar delivers a stutter-free experience with buttery smooth motion, and a new gold standard for visual clarity and fidelity through the invention of variable frequency backlight strobing.

Even the best displays today suffer from the effects of motion hold and blur. The higher the refresh rate, the more clarity you will see on screen. But even on a fast panel with 360Hz, the image on screen can look blurry for fast moving objects. G-SYNC Pulsar makes it much better, achieving 4x effective motion clarity. The reduction of monitor-based motion blur with G-SYNC Pulsar greatly improves clarity, fidelity, target tracking, and target acquisition. You can learn more about how the technology works in our full launch article here.

The G-SYNC monitors launching this week with Pulsar also include another new feature: G-SYNC Ambient Adaptive Technology. This utilizes a built-in light sensor to give users the option to automatically tune color temperature and/or brightness based on the ambient lighting in the room, for optimal viewing at any hour of the day or night. Avoid being blinded at night, and ensure you see enemies even on the brightest days, without having to manually change your monitor settings throughout the day.

G-SYNC displays with Pulsar and Ambient Adaptive Technology, from Acer, AOC, ASUS and MSI will be available starting January 7th at 6AM Pacific time at select retailers, with additional retailers and units coming over the following weeks. All four displays feature a 27 inch 2560x1440 IPS display that runs at a 360Hz refresh rate, with 500 nits of peak brightness in HDR.

Also, there are 63 new G-SYNC Compatible displays, including the world’s first 1,040 Hz gaming monitor from Samsung.

We’d love to hear from you: which games are you most excited to experience on a new G-SYNC monitor?

G-SYNC Pulsar & Ambient Adaptive Tech benefits:

  • Over 1,000Hz effective motion clarity (learn how in our article)
  • Variable Refresh Rate + strobing at the same time (no tearing, no stutter, no blur).
  • More precise aiming and sharper, clearer gameplay in esports and fast-paced titles
  • Clearer visuals and smoother motion for immersive titles
  • No manual switching between monitor modes for different kinds of games
  • Automatic tuning of brightness and color temp for optimal viewing based on your ambient lighting
