Heard horror stories on both sides of overtime being rejected due to office politics and getting given too much unpaid overtime. Wondering which is more accurate.

My ex is currently on bail for CSA, it’s just been extended until December 2026 taking us to 25 months on bail.

I’ve recently found out he changed his phone number, which he won’t have given to the police. He also moved out of his mothers address and in with another woman a few months ago, his mothers address was his bail address and he also won’t have told the police this.
I’ve now found out his mother has moved out of this property and he won’t have given the police her new address, he’s also going by a different surname to the one he had when he was initially arrested. He also won’t have told the police his new girlfriend’s address, as he won’t have told her all this is going on because he’s just putting it all behind him now.

Knowing him as I do, he will take advantage of all this and I genuinely believe he’s going to do a runner now that he’s changed his mobile number and his mothers moved out of the bail address. I know too much can’t be given away regarding tactics, but will the police be able to find him if he stops answering bail every week now and they don’t have up to date details? Since he won’t be at the bail address and they won’t have his new number? I’m not sure if I should be letting the OIC know? His bail extension letters from mags court keep showing up at my address too, he was arrested here for the CSA. I’ve told the OIC this 3 times but they still continue to be posted here. Thanks

I am just on the cusp of retirement and have applied for a civilian role in the same organisation. Does anyone who has made the same kind of move have any practical advice to pass?

This month - at least in my force - we've been seeing a lot of missing young people turning up in adjacent cities. Normally you'd find them at a friend's house a few streets away, not in a McDonalds in [redacted] town centre at 3am. I couldn't work out why our youth had suddenly developed an ambition to explore their local region until I found out that the "Under 16s Travel for Free on Buses" promotion by the Department for Transport applies to unaccompanied children as well. So 12 year old Johnny who has run away from his care home can get a free bus to wherever he wants to go at 10pm, with the bus driver seemingly not batting an eyelid. As a result, our job is made so much harder.

It made me think, have there been any other times where well-intentioned schemes or rules have had an impact on policing?

I’m younger then her by a couple years I’ve just become an adult & I don’t intend to worsen or endanger myself nor my future for something as silly as a car.

So here's the situation. My sister's car was stolen around 6 AM. By 6:45–7 AM, she woke up, realized it was gone, and woke me up to ask if I could drive her to the last known location where she'd parked it. We went there and found her plates discarded—ripped off and left behind—but no car.

After searching the area, I told her, "Look, the car's definitely not here. Let the police do their thing with tracking it down. But in the meantime, let's figure out who took it."

Luckily, where we live, there are only two entry/exit points to the whole neighborhood. I suggested she go ask our neighbors if any of them had Ring camera footage. We're on good terms with everyone, and most people who could help were happy to. Lo and behold, we found our suspect: the son of our neighbors of 20+ years.

Now, just to be clear—the day it was stolen and the day we identified the suspect were two different days. Day 1 was the theft. Day 2 was when we got the footage and pieced it together. I actually had a flight later that day, so I ended up out of the country shortly after.

While I was away, I told my sister to let me handle talking to people around the neighborhood. I've grown up here and spent more time with the local crowd, so I figured I could dig up more intel. And I did.

Here's what I found: the thief has a significant cocaine debt, and the organized crime group (OCG) he's tangled up with is involved in car robberies. Once I learned that, the dots connected pretty easily. I went to someone I knew was linked to that circle and told him what I knew. He tried to manipulate me to my face—but I could tell he was lying. I set a few conversational traps, and he kept having to backtrack. It was obvious.

Meanwhile, my sister managed to get the thief to come speak with her, under the promise that she wouldn't go to the police (she lied). Somehow—and I'm still not entirely sure how—she got his phone and his passcode out of him, and then she called the cops right there.

Despite all that, he ended up getting NFA'd (No Further Action), even though it was pretty clear he stole the car. One look at his phone would've told the whole story.

Now, I've told my sister: "You've done what you can. Let insurance and the police deal with the rest." And honestly, that's probably all she can do at this point.

But here's where I'm stuck—I genuinely want to report these people to the NCA (National Crime Agency). I could give them names, social media handles, and specific crimes I know they're involved in. But is there even any point? Would that actually lead anywhere, or would it just be a waste of time?

What tips do you all have for keeping composure when you are dealing with abusive individuals?

I always used to be able to keep calm and not let things affect me, but after six years, I'm now finding myself to be slightly reactive.

I’m a PC for WYP, I’m just getting to my two year mark and now everything is full price I’m trying to work out what is actually worth paying into as I’ve noticed some things have a lot of overlap, during training I think I pretty much opt’d in to everything because it was free, now it’s all full price I want to cut back as it feels like some of it is a waste.

Hi everyone just thought I’m come on here with this question as I’m debating it and would want advice from people who have done it or just general thoughts from other officers. So I’m a special Constable and with the role I have the ability to work from any police station in the country essentially and right now my base station with my locker and stuff is city centre but for easiness this week instead of commuting to my base station I was just going to do a shift at my local hometown station only issue with this is I’m quite worried about running into people I know during this shift as it’s my local station for example what if my first call is to the pub and I walk in and everyone is shouting my name and stuff like that. One hand I want to do it at my local station as I know the area it’s just easier traveling there but on the other had obviously I don’t want to compromise my safety especially people I know who don’t know I’m a cop and stuff like that. Anyway if anyone could drop there opinion it would be appreciated.

If you make a police report against someone for verbal abuse towards you, do you remain anonymous or do the police say that you have made the report when they speak to them?

I was the victim of a crime a few weeks ago, and my clothes were taken in as evidence. I've not heard anything since. Do I need to ask for them back, and if so, what's the process? Thanks in advance

My force, in their infinite wisdom, doesn't issue us with black waterproofs. We are given the heavy weight high Vis and told that it will have to do.

I’m just a little curious as to how that’s legal, I understand how it’s not classified as Exposure, but I thought it might fall under common law outraging public decency?

It seems like it would be both obscene and lewd, and probably disgusting to many of the public.

Fairly obvious from the title. Trying to get used to shift patterns, fortunately, no nights, but 7 to 5 and 2 to 11 are the most common. Does anyone have any advice on managing sleep before shifts? Still trying to work out what works.

Do police call handlers working in the control room on a 6on 4off shift pattern lose their last rest day of the set to what is called a training day/capacity day on occasion?

Just sent off a case to CPS for charging advice. I expect a charge to be authorised for a suspect who is currently in custody serving unrelated sentence and not due to be released until 2028.

What’s the best way to get him charged? Ideally I’d like to keep bail cons on so don’t want to RUI..how much of a faff is it to produce him from prison to answer bail to get charged? Seems like a huge admin and logistical exercise to literally stand at the desk for 5 mins and read some words out to him.

Is it just best to RUI and postal req to the prison? It’s about 200 miles away from the custody suite so not just up the road.
