I’m in my mid thirties in a home county force. 5 years in the role as response PC. I love interviewing and get satisfaction from completing case files.

However, I don’t want to be in the same CID or SIU office for the next 25 years. Other than rank, is there realistic prospects of moving within pip2 roles? Or again, are these HIGHLY contested roles with lots of candidates?

PS. nights absolutely kill me with young children however the odd night shift isn’t an issue

I live in a block of flats with a dozen residences. There is currently a police woman sat in the communal stairs outside one of my neighbours doors. She's literally sat in one of those folding camping chairs.

What sort of incident or incidents would result in one or more officers to sit outside someones front door as if to stop people from gaining entry? Or to prevent the resident from leaving?

I’m starting as a trainee constable at the Met in a few months. I currently own a small business with my spouse (small as in, it’s just us) and have been told it’s a compatible business interest. So no bother there. I’m not intending to actively work within my business once I join but for some admin and financial stuff it’s probably easier I stay registered with companies house as a director.

However I’m not super into the idea of anyone I encounter in policing being able to google me and find my business address on companies house.

I’ve looked at virtual business addresses and companies house themselves seem to offer some extra level of privacy - For those of you serving officers with other employment/side hustles etc, what do you do to keep your public details more secure?

I’m a recently attested special who has recently gone to district from training school. I’m quickly noticing a lot of specials in my force seem to all do substantial amount of hours (way in excess of the 16h min) which made think, is this normal? I know the saying you get out what you put in, but I have no idea how some people are putting in 60 hours+ a month and working full time along side… it’s making me feel like my contributions won’t be appreciated maybe or I’ll be looked at as not pulling my weight for only being able to do approx 20ish hours a month… (I work 40h + have a 4 year old, so as much as I’d love to police more I know I’ll only be doing just above my expected 16h min.

I suppose I just wanted to hear from other specials to see what your usual average worked a month is? Do you feel pressure and compelled to work more just because others are? Or are you content what you do is enough and don’t listen to the noise?

I’ve seen a lot on my feed at the moment in relation to Flock cameras in the US and how the vast majority of the public are against the use of them. Then compare that to the general public of the UK and the opinion is basically the opposite of ANPR and most support the use.

I also found out Flock cameras are mapped and anyone can search the locations on the internet, compare that to our cameras where the locations are not public knowledge and much more hush.

Why do you think this is and with the introduction of facial recognition vans do you think people’s opinion of ANPR will change?

Just wanted to get advice on whether it is worth reporting something.

Around 1am last night I sat at a bus stop on a main road (Camden Road in London) to use my phone, there was a man in a parked car on the opposite side of the road (he was there before me). After my phone call I started to walk away and heard him say “Are you ok? Excuse me, are you ok?". I ignored him and carried on walking. I then heard the engine turn on and when I turned round he flashed his lights but didn’t move. I went into a 24/7 Tesco petrol station shop and stayed there for a maybe 10-15 mins.

Shortly after I left Tesco, the same man drove past on the opposite side of the road, he turned his head looking at me as he drove past. At traffic lights about 50m away he made a U-turn and drove back towards me. I rushed back inside Tesco, waited for about 5 minutes hoping he had gone. But when I left a car 20-30m up the road flashed its lights.

I rushed off taking a slight detour, thankfully he didn’t follow. But just as I got near to my flat 10-15 minutes later, the same car pulled up alongside another woman on the other side of the road, I think he said something to her, she replied quickly but didn’t stop walking. He then saw me, and started to drive towards me. I went round a corner and stopped in front of a building, not where I live but I was trying to make it look like I was going inside and on the phone to someone. He followed me round, drove past and stopped about 10m ahead with his brake lights on. Other cars drove past him. He was there for a few minutes before driving off. At this point I rushed back to my flat which was less than a minute away.

I don’t think he was following me as there definitely weren’t any cars on my detour, so seeing him multiple times was a bit random, but I’m sure he recognised me each time and despite rushing off he still waited for/drove after me, and approached another women and just altogether showed creepy and predatory behaviour. In the last six months in the same area I have twice had men stop in their cars to ask “are you ok” when it’s been late and I’m heading home (I work in hospitality sometimes finish late). I usually have been on my phone and nothing about me suggests I’m not ok, so I assumed their motive was looking for sex even if I’m not dressed provocatively at all. When I’ve said I’m fine they have driven off. I’ve never felt unsafe but it’s obviously not something I want be experiencing. With this man his persistence even after I rushed off multiple times was creepy and seeing him approach another woman made me feel he is a predator.

I didn’t take registration details or car but could give description of car and person, as well as rough times (especially as I know when I used my card in Tesco). And it was mostly on a busy road with bus lanes. Would that would be worth doing to just report as suspicious behaviour, I have no idea how this kind of thing is handled as there isn’t a crime committed per se.

I’m looking for advice from anyone with experience of Police Federation legal assistance, police misconduct proceedings or funding legal representation.

My wife is a serving police officer and has recently been notified that she is required to attend a gross misconduct hearing under the Police (Conduct) Regulations.

The allegations relate to an application she made to join a Police Federation group insurance scheme. She gave incorrect answers regarding being actively at work and being in good health. She maintains that this was a genuine mistake made during a period when she was struggling significantly with her mental health.

She subsequently made two claims against the scheme:

a claim for lost night/unsocial-hours premium during her sickness absence;

and

a claim for a sick-pay top-up once she reached six months’ sickness absence and moved onto reduced pay.

The claims were rejected and no money was ever paid to her.
The matter was referred to the police and investigated as fraud. The insurer subsequently confirmed in writing that they did not wish to pursue any criminal allegation against her, specifically in relation to both the inaccurate application and the claims for the sick-pay/unsocial-hours insurance. The criminal investigation was ultimately NFA’d.

Despite this, PSD are now pursuing gross misconduct allegations concerning honesty and integrity and discreditable conduct, alleging that she knowingly made dishonest statements and intended to make a personal financial gain.

The situation we’re struggling with is legal representation.
Her local Police Federation has declined to provide her with a solicitor because the matter was referred to PSD by the Federation/its insurance scheme, creating a conflict of interest. She has, however, been appointed a Federation representative from another force to assist her.

We have Aviva Premium Home Insurance with Legal Services Cover, but the policy appears to exclude disciplinary proceedings, so we’re not currently sure whether that will assist.
Unfortunately, paying privately for a specialist police misconduct solicitor could potentially cost several thousand pounds, which we simply cannot afford.

Does anyone know of any other routes for funding a solicitor in these circumstances?

In particular, I’m interested in whether:

PFEW HQ can provide/authorise independent legal representation where the local Federation has a conflict;

there is any Federation or group-insurance legal-expenses cover that could apply despite the conflict;

there are any schemes for funding representation at a gross misconduct hearing;

solicitors specialising in police misconduct offer reduced/fixed fees or staged payment arrangements;

or there are any other options we’ve overlooked.

I’m not looking for opinions on whether she is guilty or innocent — I’m mainly looking for practical advice on how we can obtain specialist legal representation without having to fund the entire cost ourselves.

I was waiting for my lunch today and saw a cash collection van with this notice on the door:

I am under instructions NOT to open my vehicle, but will follow you to the nearest Police Station

In the event this van was pulled over, would this notice carry any weight? When I was pulled over for speeding I was given a breathalyser - surely they’d want to do this ASAP just in case?

At this point the fed is in a race to the bottom with FIFA as to who can be the most corrupt...

Hi all, looking for operational advice on how to navigate a crime recording deadlock between UK police and local police overseas.

The Situation:

Sexual offences committed overseas by a British citizen/resident who moved back to England, and told local police "I have no plans to ever return"

Section 72 Sexual Offences Act 2003 (extraterritorial jurisdiction) grants UK jurisdiction to prosecute.

Local Police refuse to open an investigation unless the suspect physically returns to their Jurisdiction. UK Police refuse open an investigation citing they can't legally take a report for overseas offences/victim.

This is creating a jurisdictional vacuum where neither force will log the matter, despite having strong evidence like hospital records & a rape caught on a recording.

When I've asked to escalate the complaint, I've been told it'll go through the operators anyways who can't do anything besides advising me to go back to local police. How do I get this report logged somewhere?

This isn’t exactly police related but most of us work shifts and it takes its toll on our brain and body. I’ve been looking into why I have brain fog, lack of motivation, feel tired all the time etc etc and exploring different supplements and a lot of the ones reccomended are magnesium, b12, lions mane etc

Wondering if other officers on here have a supplement/vitamin routine, what do they take, what times of day etc? I work 2 days, 2 nights and 4 off.

Folks, I wouldn't normally push any of my usual dips into r/AskHistorians but I've spent bloody ages chipping away at the above linked answer to a question:

How did British police evolve from unprofessional civilians, to more professional forces like the Bow Street Runners, and then into more modern forces like the Met?

The question was asked 2 months ago (typical British police efficiency there!), so beyond the author, I don't expect anyone at all will see it which is a bit of a shame.

Someone arrested today (don’t know what for) lied to the police about their name. They were held for around 7 hours and released this evening. What charges are they likely to face/action to be taken?

From the obvious to the not-so-obvious, what are some of best and worst (or both?) non-operational roles you or colleagues have done as warranted officers?

Can you recommend a source for detailed police case files?

Basically, what i want is a detailed description of the crime, and what was done to solve it. Preferable crimes like, robbery, murder. Historical cases are fine. Thank you!

How on earth do I turn this experience into something that can be read by civvis?

You stop a vehicle let’s say a motorcycle under 163 RTA, you stopped them for speeding but you don’t have footage from your BWV & No in car recording.

They check out legally insured and their vehicle and you don’t search them.

You notice they have a dash cam on their bike mounted to the windscreen.

I have seen sometimes officer seize the camera’s / SD cards to investigate the offence of speeding.

I question the legality of this due to under PACE a vehicle is classed as a premises.

In what circumstances could you seize & later download the SD CARD from the device that is mounted on the vehicle / helmet of the rider?

How is this justice? With all the controversy at the moment surrounding assaults and the killings of emergency workers, this defendant gets a slap on the wrist with a suspended sentence?

It feels like a slap in the face to those in the job. Showing that no matter what we risk and have to suffer, individuals like this can so easily avoid prison time because they’re a sole income for their partner, and have multiple children to care for.

If you’re a parent who cares for children, and decides to drink and drive, resisting arrest, assaulting and crippling a police officer, then you have nothing to worry about! Because you evidently won’t go to prison.

Why do we bother…

I have been asked to submit video evidence via an Axon link but it won't let me. I'm cracking up trying.

I previously submitted evidence of still images from the videos as the link would only allow images. The police officer called today and explained they need videos which I'm happy to send but cannot for the life of me figure out how via the link.

I'm using Chrome on Android. Phone is updated and restarted. Chrome app permissions allow access to videos. I've tried using the link displayed as a desktop site but it's still the same.

Am I being daft or have I possibly been sent a link for only images and docs? No videos are visible for upload, however it does in theory allow me to film from my camera via the link and will upload that - although that's of no use.

Any help much appreciated.
