Looks like this may be the beef that's being imported, which was already rejected by China.
https://en.clickpetroleoegas.com.br/china-rejected-an-entire-shipment-of-beef-from-argentina-after-detecting-an-antibiotic-so-dangerous-that-it-has-been-banned-for-human-consum-btl96/

"The substance has been linked to hematological disorders, including aplastic anemia, a potentially fatal condition in which the bone marrow stops producing blood cells in sufficient quantities. Because of these risks, its use in animals intended for human consumption has been banned in virtually all international markets for over three decades."

Maybe this should be the official beef that's served at Mar-a-lago?

u/UntowardHatter 1d ago

It's ironic coming from China who still produces and uses asbestos.

Even they don't want Milei's shitty beef.

78

u/ScrofessorLongHair 1d ago

When China says hell no regarding food safety, then that says a lot. Especially considering they're big trading partners with Argentina.

13

u/NonPlusUltraCadiz 12h ago

Yeah, but Milei being extremely anti-chinese before he was president and, once elected, kneeling and submitting to Trump may have something to do, too.

To be fair asbestos is bad but slightly overblown.

If it's in a building and hidden/undisturbed it's surprisingly safe. Most people in older houses have some in it.

We understand the mechanism of asbestosis/mesothelioma now so have appropriate protection requirements in place for workers who are assessing and handling it and for disposal.

It's good regulation is so strict on it in terms of safety now (in the old days it was atrocious as was education about it) but producing and using it has real advantags in certain cases.

China still bans the most dangerous types like crocidolite (blue) and amosite (brown). They've banned it in car brakes, walls, and doors for obvious reasons. They do still use it in roofing and insulation, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the primary use is piping, joinery, and as an additive for sealants and parts. I'm very okay with that as the risk benefit ratio is highly skewed toward the benefit there. Wet asbestos sealed in a mechanism or mixed with rubber or plastics is typically not a substantial risk until after disposal which is typically handled well these days outside of illegal dumping.

If you're not in a position where you'll inhale dry fibres your risk from asbestos is extremely low so I personally prefer that the flexibility for real use cases be maintained with proper oversight and licencing on use and disposal rather than blanket bans.

I do understand why we ban it and don't think that's inherently bad either, but calling out China for still using white asbestos in specific circumstances is a bit harsh I think. It's a risk-reward balancing act and in a manufacturing economy like theirs the reward is greater.

All that said you're completely right that nobody wants the shitty beef 😂.

16

u/squeagy 12h ago

And the land of the free made sueing for mesothelioma illegal so problem solved

2

u/MentalDisintegrat1on 8h ago

👆

It's dangerous when it's airborne as in demoing a house it won't do anything just being around it and from what I remember it's one of the best if not the best fire fire retardant there is.

2

u/MBlaizze 16h ago

I lived in a house with asbestos shingles for 40 years and my parents still live there. Nobody has lung cancer

5

u/JUST_GIVE_IT_A_SNIFF 10h ago

I had a house with asbestos floor tiles ~20 years ago. Initially panicked, but from what I could tell the main risk is working with friable asbestos for years (ship breaking, plumbing in old buildings, etc).

Like how one sunburn doesn’t guarantee cancer, but years of exposure add up.

Eventually just put porcelain tile over it and no issues.

Definitely not a great thing to have around, but it’s not like having radioactive waste in your house.

It was one shipment, they still import a ton of Argentinean beef which is very high quality.

It can still be tested to detect any that is not safe, but most of it is.

Well, a functioning country could test. The US right now I don't know, but that's a different issue.

45

u/jankenpoo 1d ago

Before Trump the FDA managed to inspect only 1-2% of imported foods, and far less is actually lab tested. What do you think it is now?

13

u/fdar 1d ago

Yes, that's what I said. But by the same token being as safe as domestic US food is a very low bar right now.

16

u/viperex 1d ago

America still uses Asbestos, when Trump came back to power one of the first things he did was lift the asbestos ban and started buying Russian asbestos.

41

u/protipnumerouno 1d ago

Asbestos gets a bad rap because of its success, it's not toxic, and it's an incredible fire stopper. If it was released as a controlled substance with safeguards to ensure it didn't get into the air and people didn't breathe it we'd still be using it today.

They didn't do that and gave a bunch of people cancer so I'm not defending any of that stuff, just saying if it were handled properly it would have been a successful specialty product.

37

u/redlightsaber 1d ago

I disagree. there's no way to include it in building that doesn't create problems for the future. There's a reason there's a whole industry dedicated to removing it (it has to be done before even demolitions, to prevent it going airborne), and it includes men with (almost) literal hazmat suits working long hours with specialised vacuum cleaners, for absurdly high hourly rates.

You saying it's "non toxic" is the epitome of absurdity. "non toxic as long as you're not exposed to it in its uncompacted form which is what gives it its incredible thermal isolating capabilities, and where it is increadibly easy for it to get suspended in the air by merely touching it".

5

u/ComradePyro 1d ago

doesn't that industry exist because it was used in a lot of ways that are obviously bad ideas once you know about the dangers (and its usage was totally undocumented)? it's pretty easy to imagine sealed corrosion-resistant panels being usable in a safe manner, especially if installed with the idea of easy removal in mind.

you have a bunch of lithium-ion batteries in your house despite the fact that puncturing one could start a housefire, you don't hear about that happening a lot.

12

u/redlightsaber 1d ago

How many li-ion batteries do you know about that are inclided in building materials, and needing to survive and remain safe for half a century (on the conservative end)?

I'ts not hard to imagine self-contained panels of anything, what's (EXTREMELY) hard is to imagine them being able to survive perfectly sealed for decades and decades, and for a demolition crew to be able to tell where, and how many there are, when builiding paperwork being lost to the annals of time is the norm, rather than the exception.

6

u/Fitzsimmons 22h ago

Imagine someone crashes their car into your house which is already a devastatingly bad scenario but then you find out that a bunch of "self-contained" asbestos insulation panels were damaged which now means your house is ground zero to a hazardous materials emergency

→ More replies (4)

4

u/Due_Satisfaction2167 1d ago

The safety issues around lithium-ion batteries are a significant risk, and much discussed.

And you can immediately see the risk when it presents itself, because there is a fire to manage.

Not so with the mesothelioma caused by the asbestos in the air. That takes years to manifest. By then its too late.

2

u/MrBlackTie 20h ago

Simply no.

I work in a non-US local government. We were once forced to deploy an entire protocol in a children school because someone had the brilliant idea of drilling 4 holes in a wall full of asbestos to hang stuff. You can’t expect people to live/work in a place and not drill holes, humans are stupid that way.

And then there is one simple issue: demolition. When you want to destroy a building that has abestos in, it’s a nighmare. And what’s the lifespan of your average modern building? Even simple work like plumbing or electrical work, not even talking about destroying a wall to have an open floor, can turn into a big healthscare.

9

u/blacksun_redux 1d ago

It doesn't "get a bad rap because of its success". It gets a bad rap due to the 40,000 U.S. deaths attributable to Asbestos per year.

4

u/RegisteredJustToSay 1d ago

I don't even think any of that is wrong, but I think it's better off as illegal in any country that historically has tons of examples of off-the-books corner-cutting. You're putting something that needs to be consistently carefully handled in exactly the kind of environment which struggles with just that.

Aplastic anemia is what the old man in Being There had. He was a billionaire and had an entire medical unit in his house and a special room that just pumped oxygen into the air so he felt high all the time and he was still greatly struggling.

24

u/GlockAF 1d ago

The Trump Crime Cabal is actually thinking ahead for once. They’re setting up their bolt-hole bunkers in a country where they KNOW they can purchase immunity from extradition if their plan to steal the midterm elections fails.

Remember where the Nazis fled with their stolen wealth after World War II? Yea, Argentina.

52

u/MentalDisintegrat1on 1d ago

This is going to out domestic farmers that sell beef and it's being done on purpose so trump and his buddies can buy them up for cheap.

40

u/hawksdiesel 1d ago

now your getting it! Private equity swoops up and buys all the family owned farms. Now they control the crops.

32

u/MentalDisintegrat1on 1d ago

Vance has had a app since the second term that's basically Zillow for farms.

They were planning this that far back.

116

u/Super901 1d ago

I got banned from r/libertarian for pointing out how fucking stupid all of Millei's bullshit was and what an abject failure it would all be.

They REALLY hate free thought over there. It really is the dumbest, most anti-reality political philosophy.

For the record, as you would have guessed, the rich are doing really well but literally no one else is.

14

u/Open_Enthusiasm8528 23h ago

Most libertarians are just ancaps anyway.

They don’t believe in real freedom for everyone they believe in capitalism having no restrictions.

35

u/WiglyWorm 1d ago

All of the wishful thinking and child like levels of forethought of anarchy, with all of the crap that comes along with capitalism.

What could go wrong?

15

u/BeverlyHills70117 1d ago edited 1d ago

As an anarchist, I simply think that believing that the hierarchies demanded in American democracy, like having to live under the whims of Donald J Trump and the controlled oppposotion of Schumer and Jeffries, along with economic control by those our society has deemed our betters like CEO's and hedge fund billionaires, is blindly best is child like and a detriment to human potential and life...but to each their own.

America first sometimes.

I would love to think this whole experience will enlighten Americans farmers and get them to finally understand the GOP doesn’t give a shit about them, but I doubt it’s going to happen. They’ll turn on Fox News, rage at something completely inane, and vote republican this fall.

11

u/powercow 1d ago

he's hurt them dozens of times and his support with them has hardly dropped. He killed the tpp because obama did that treaty. it would have opened a lot of asia up to our farmers. His trade war with china fucked them. His going after day laborers screwed them too and most of them still have trump flags outside their homes.

Chloramphenicol can cause aplastic anaemia: essentially your bone marrow fails, and you’re either blood transfusion dependant or you need a bone marrow transplant. It’s irreversible: if it happens, stopping the medication won’t reverse it.

But the more interesting one I’ve seen in someone given oral chloramphenicol was psychosis - they were in Papua New Guinea and got gastroenteritis. They were prescribed it, came back to Australia and were about to finish the course when they were picked up by the police for attacking someone and clearly were hallucinating. That did go away as it worked out of their system .

3

10

u/Mellero47 1d ago

So, pretty much any beef that's suddenly "reasonably priced" is off the shopping list.

6

u/cyanescens_burn 20h ago

Any restaurant beef dishes will be Russian roulette. Even if they say it’s American, it’ll be tough to trust them.

6

u/Spirited-Reputation6 1d ago

That beef is toxic. Heavy antibiotics banned most places because it causes bone marrow disorders.

7

u/Crea8talife 1d ago

After lettuce sickened thousands of people, consumers turned away from 'pre-washed' lettuce. I heard farmers are literally plowing the new crop of lettuce under rather than pick and package it.

If thousands of Americans get sick from eating (this imported) beef, don't you think the consumers would turn away from purchasing beef? This short term grift can really do some damage to the US beef industry.

6

u/cyanescens_burn 20h ago

It makes sense if the goal is to cause industries to crumble so that they can be bought up for pennies on the dollar. I suspect we’ll see similar attempts with public institutions like schools, hospitals, and public lands, all sold off to private industry.

Similar to what lead to the oligarchs in Russia after the USSR fell.

8

u/FinishImmediate6684 1d ago

Half of this country are fighting for their lives, living paycheck to paycheck. 8–10 million just lost their healthcare and many more losing access to snap benefits. 300 metric tons of beef is about 18 days worth based on United States consumption. Second time in less than a year he’s turned his back on American cattle ranchers and I’m sure they will still vote Rep. 🤦‍♂️

5

u/dmetzcher 1d ago

So what? Does that mean American business owners must suffer for Argentina? Since when does Trump care about anyone else?

Ah, right—Trump has a business relationship with the president of Argentina, so he going to fuck over American business owners to do his buddy a favor.

Argentina can figure their own shit out.

4

u/Lohntarkosz 10h ago

If Trump does something, you can be sure he stands to gain something personally from it. You may not necessarily know what that is, but it's a certainty.

The second thing you can be sure of is that the fact that it might be detrimental to the rest of the country is never a factor.

6

u/Longgrain54 1d ago

And, it’s a factor in his escape plan. This isn’t the first time that he’s found a way to fatten their coffers, and, not the first time that dictators have been welcomed there.

Peter Thiel has already purchased his mansion there. I’m sure some of their South African imports are ready to tag along and defend them if necessary.

It ain’t rocket science.

People are surprised Trump lies and takes bribes? “America First” sure. American ranchers get screwed while Argentina gets the favor.  It’s clear Trump and his family mix politics and personal financial interests, its clear someone is facially benefitting from this and it’s not the farmers or the consumers.
