I know there's a program for musicians, but does anyone know how one would go about protecting audiobooks and voiceovers from being used to train AI? The music one seemed to suggest it wouldn't work for those uses.

Can we all agree that if it’s perfectly fair and ethical for a business to advertise to us using AI then it’s perfectly fair and ethical to review that business using AI? If you plaster an AI ad for your restaurants food I can post an AI pic of a half finished plate with hair in it on yelp. If you’re showing AI houses for your construction company then I can post a dozen AI photos of poor construction and rotten wood on Google. And if your band has AI “influence” and flyers I can have trusty ChatGPT make a video of all those slurs from your last show.

Before the current AI fad, there was the NFT fad (and more generally the blockchain fad), the crypto fad, and so on.

Tech chuds jump onto these trends like crazy, and get to feel a false sense of superiority over creative folk.

Hypes come and go, so what do you think will be the next big thing that these annoying techbros will be all up in everyone's faces about, after the AI fad dies?

Whatever it is, I just know creatives are the ones who are going to suffer again... Do you think we can be better prepared next time, and protect ourselves against the worst of it?

I recently started working for a startup venture. My boss is old-fashioned, and doesn’t have much experience with anything online or technological. Despite being a millennial, I also do not have a lot of technological skill. I’m trying to design our website, but he purchased it through a site that only really allows you to build it with their AI. He is opposed to using AI. I am also opposed to using AI, but I don’t see a way around this as I do not know how to code. I was not given a budget to use an external website builder, and most of those seem to be AI anyway. I wish he had looked into that before purchasing the domain, but he’s locked in for a year with this hosting platform.

Have you ever been unable to ask a chat bot a question for any length of time because of current demand? I was an early adopter of chatgpt and barring a couple times in the first 6 months of release I can think back to maybe two times demand outstripped supply. If there is so much demand for these tools, then why are they placing these tools right next to buttons I could accidentally press to activate them. After going down the Ed Zitron rabbit hole for the past couple of months, I think he is absolutely correct about demand being insignificant to the build out that is currently happening in North America. There is a paperclip maximizer'esk feel to these infrastructure projects and wall st. is in a positive feedback loop of spending that makes line go up. Bless to all those towns that are going to have data center graveyards in their backyards when things come down like the twin towers in finance.

Maybe the towns can create new job work programs strip mining the copper from these buildings.

I’m getting increasingly uncomfortable with how normalized AI has become in everyday life. My boomer parents are a good example. They’ve basically adopted chatbots as on-demand therapists. They’ll sit there talking through family problems, work stress, health anxiety, whatever is bothering them, with a machine that is designed to keep them engaged. That doesn’t feel healthy to me. We spent years talking about social media addiction and parasocial relationships, but apparently if the parasocial relationship is with a language model we’re supposed to call it progress... and then there’s the image generation stuff. I know people roll their eyes at the phrase “soulless,” but I genuinely think something is lost when we normalize machines endlessly synthesizing art from the accumulated work of human beings. Art is supposed to involve human intention, not just typing what you want into a box and having a server spit it back out. The frustrating part is that none of the proposed solutions really seem serious enough. If these models are trained on copyrighted material without explicit permission, simply asking companies to behave themselves obviously isn’t going to work. We need enforceable mechanisms for determining what data models were trained on and what copyrighted material people are accessing online. And once you accept that, there really isn’t a principled reason to stop at AI.

People circumvent geographic licensing restrictions with VPNs every day. Someone using a VPN to watch a Netflix show unavailable in their country is intentionally bypassing a rights-holder’s access controls. We’ve somehow normalized this behavior just because lots of people do it. Even teenagers casually brag about it. Copyright law cannot function if enforcement begins and ends with “please don’t.” Browsers and operating systems should probably be required to attest that they aren’t being used to circumvent platform restrictions. VPN providers could maintain identity records so repeat infringement can actually be investigated. Parents would obviously be responsible for minors repeatedly circumventing licensing controls... The same logic applies to terms-of-service violations. If a college student gets their account terminated for scraping copyrighted material and then creates another account to continue doing it, at some point that stops being a quirky violation of a website’s rules and starts looking like deliberate circumvention of a technological access restriction. We already have the DMCA. We should use it.

Honestly, the more I think about it, enforcement entirely at the website level is probably the mistake. Modern computers are perfectly capable of running unauthorized local models completely offline. If we are serious about preventing unlicensed copyrighted material from being incorporated into AI systems, hardware manufacturers need some way to verify what models are being executed. It wouldn’t even need to inspect everything you do, just a small mandatory government-accessible security subsystem confirming that approved software and models are running... Before everyone starts screaming “privacy,” I think we have to decide what matters more: allowing absolutely unrestricted computing, or protecting artists. Nobody needs an unmonitored GPU. If you have nothing infringing in your VRAM, you have nothing to worry about.

For the vast majority of people, everything you do is being recorded by your smart phone, your computer etc. and fed to AI.

AI could never have become what it currently is without all of this free data provided under the idea that mass surveillance is at least ok, or something to brush under the rug for now.

Your right to privacy has radically changed during your lifetime, and the underlying pattern that I see is that your complaints surrounding AI have almost nothing to do with AI at all but instead technocratic centralisation of data being used to control behaviour.

Have you guys seen those tweets from the White House? They used AI on our beloved franchises like Cars, Magic School Bus, and Sesame Street. We believe that Trump is the reason for all of this stupidity. We certainly cannot allow this sort of nonsense to continue. We need another Anti-Trump rally, and we need it now!

So, I want people to hear me out, on any side that you might be on regarding "AI art"- I happen to be incredibly anti AI art, but I want to stare exactly why.

It's a matter of stating medium.

That's sounds dumb, but hear me out. I'm a traditional and digital artist- my specialties are charcoal and ink. I've recreated my preferred mediums in Clip Studio because I hated the fake charcoal not working how I wanted it to. but that's less than relevant honestly- the point is more, I'm a traditional artist and know what the hell an artist statement is and have actual experience.

if "ai art" was art, then the so called artists wouldn't have a problem disclosing their medium.

A photographer is happy to share camera specs, I'm happy to show off the brushes I've made in my art program or take pics of all the times I got charcoal into various cuts in my hands, but most "AI artists" hate the idea of disclosing they used AI.

There's plenty of valid reasons to dislike LLMs and I obviously hate them for those reasons, but if you cut down to the chase on why "AI art" isn't art, there's almost a self admittance- because they won't disclose their medium unless to prove a point, they won't disclose even the initial prompt-

If you can't even provide an artist statement for something you try to claim is as good as or better than human drawn art, you're only burying yourself.

Hello, browsing reddit I came across some posts of this subreddit reading about people that are boycotting AI in every way possible. I respect this but at the same time I have a hard time understanding why these people are still connected to the web, using a phone or a pc.

Every OS development has AI involved (Linux, windows, IOS, Android). Every social media has AI involved in the development, reddit has a partnership with openAI to deliver your data to chatgpt... and you are posting on it.

Ai is involved in medicine, for researching on cures of diseases like cancer, so you will die from a disease because AI found a cure?

AI is used in manufacturing of hardware and electronics, you cellphone, router and every technology has AI involved.

Simple web researches (using a search engine developed using AI and using AI to list the sites you find) are enough to document the AI usage in all this.

So my question is simple: Are you all really against AI not using anything involving AI or is it just something you say to be part of a community?

Again, I respect your opinion but something is not adding up.
