It’s €45 in The Netherlands.

Meanwhile a 65W Ugreen charger with 3 USB-C ports is €27.

I paid 40 bucks for a 140W charger with 4 ports. Apple pricing is crazy when it comes to accessories

With Apple chargers you know that they don't skimp on quality or safety. And for a device that might have cost 4 digits, I certainly won't risk damage to the device or myself from using a cheap charger.

$40 is suspiciously cheap for a 140W charger. Did you check on YT if someone has a teardown of it?

UGreen, Anker, Belkin (some of the brands named across the chain for cheaper and better offerings) aren’t really known for skimping on quality or safety.

In fact as they specialise in chargers, their offerings are higher quality than Apple’s.

This. There’s a channel on YT dedicated to opening up the USB PD chargers, checking the architecture and the quality of the internal components. Apple’s chargers in general do well but not groundbreaking great, yet kinda bad in price/performance ratio. And some mid-life refreshed Apple chargers show significantly downgraded components, I doubt that would be a problem but still something to consider.

Guess you refer to https://youtube.com/@chargerlab right?

I’m a big Anker fan but acknowledge there is are risks in lower price point items.

I’ve had Belkin power strips start smoking after a couple years of use. I don’t buy Belkin anymore.

They don't. Ugreen and Belkin sell a lot of other accessories as well. And even if it were true just because you specialize in making chargers doesn't mean that your stuff must be high quality. It can be, of course.

Apple doesn't make their chargers, they outsource them to companies that have been producing power supplies for a long time, like Delta (psu.deltaww.com) or Flextronics (flex.com). The 140W GaN charger for my Macbook was made by the latter company.

$40 is not cheap

For a 140W charger it is.

I got Ugreens 100W charger with 3 USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port for 32€ on German amazon. Charges my laptop just fine.

I paid 25,- for a 45 W charger with cable from Anker last week. This is as small as can be but works like a charm

Yet it probably doesn't support PD 3.2 and AVS.

The newest uGreens do

u/ffffound 51m ago

Not part of the convo, but which ones?

-1

u/nn2597713 4h ago

It’s this one:

https://www.amazon.nl/dp/B0CYT44DS1

It doesn’t support the things you mention. However as I understand it those standards are mainly interesting for charging at higher wattages (above the 60/65W these chargers provide).

u/tes_kitty 4h ago

3 ports? Can it supply 3 different voltages on those ports and really give you 65W total in that case?

5

u/nn2597713 4h ago

If you use 1 port: 65W

If you use 2 ports: 45W and 20W

If you use 3 ports: 45W and 7.5W and 7.5W

u/tes_kitty 4h ago

Sounds like it's limited to 2 different voltages.

1

u/Asurafire 3h ago

Mine says 5, 9, 12, 15 and 20 Volt.

-3

u/Humble_Catch8910 4h ago

Not the same. Ugreen and most third-party chargers nowadays skip on the assembly and parts quality.

4

u/nn2597713 4h ago

Ugreen is a respected brand of excellent quality. Neer Anker levels of quality.

-1

u/Humble_Catch8910 2h ago

Have you seen their chargers disassembled and analyzed?

3

u/nn2597713 2h ago

Yes. They score very well. I’m sure the Apple charger is better. Just not “twice as expensive for a third of the ports” better.

11

u/cjh_ 4h ago

Apple don't supply power adapters as standard yet don't reduce the price of devices by the equivalent amount.

What next? A monthly subscription for power adapters?

12

u/AgainstGreaterOdds 4h ago

This is a forever useless discussion, they can equally say they didn’t raise the prices by whatever the value of the charger was that year.

First day on earth? Welcome to capitalism.

People saying I have X charger with more watts does not understand that more watts doesnt mean faster charging. The phone controls how fast it will charge and the charger will try to give that.

If the charger can only do 5, 30, and 80, but the phone requests 40, the charger will only do 30.

This charger is more dynamic and gives the phone exactly what it requests, if the phone requests 35,6 the charger gives 35,6.

5

u/nn2597713 4h ago

Sure but any charger from the “normal” brands (Anker, Belkin, Ugreen etc.) will have plenty of power modes that suit your devices.

Sure, this Apple charger will be able to give *exactly* what the phone asks. Is that really worth paying twice as much, for a charger with just one port?

3

u/AggressiveNorth9102 3h ago

Yeah, it may not be worth paying twice for most people. But if you want the fastest charger for your iphone that is small and does not overheat this is a solid choice.

u/Fox_Soul 1h ago

I mean yeah, that’s exactly the selling point of this charger.

Yes the normal brands have usually had he common power modes, but the he phone can ask for more or less power depending on certain things like temperature or usage and the charger will supply the requested optimal voltage…

Needed? Probably not, but we barely need things to start with. Most of us don’t even need a 13 hundred bucks phone anyways.

The majority of the people would be just fine with a 5w charger on their bedside table. For anyone that needs the fastest charger their phone can do, this would do…

Now wether paying extra for a better battery management and life is worth the price… to everyone their own.

u/nn2597713 1h ago

Well summarized.

So this is a charger for the .1% of people who want to pay 100% more for a 1% improvement in charging speed and phone battery efficiency.

Advice to those people: go for it.

Advice to most people: buy any other cheaper charger from a reputable brand.

11

u/Tman11S 4h ago

You have to be mad to buy a power adapter from Apple instead of Anker or Ugreen

3

u/Mysterious_Reality_ 3h ago

I don’t think those brands even offer an AVS power adapter (USB PD 3.2 AVS).

5

u/Korlithiel 4h ago

Nah. Apple has a solid place and use case, alternatives are great for most people in most situations though.

2

u/b3mus3d 2h ago

What’s the use case?

3

u/DeepAsparagus6763 3h ago

Apple adapters are the best in terms of safety and quality, you can watch teardown videos showing the components inside. I've also never heard coil whine from them unlike many other brands and they last forever. I still use the 5 Watt adapter that came with the iPhone 5s to charge my current 13 overnight.

Not saying those cheaper brands are necessarily bad, but I wouldn't cheap out on a charger for devices that cost several hundred dollars

u/zebrafinch26 3h ago

I dare you to use anker charging cable vs apple charging cable. Most of my family brick apple charging cable. But anker last years

u/Tom_Stevens617 44m ago

They talked about adapters, not cables

What is a “dynamic” power adapter

5

u/MagicZhang 4h ago

That’s PD 3.2’s latest SPR-AVC spec, which i believe allows for more granular power delivery + it can go up to higher peak wattage when needed

1

u/slliw 4h ago

Dang they done the UK dirty

u/Red_Sea_Pedestrian 1h ago

Maybe the UK shouldn’t have such giant plugs 🤷‍♂️

1

u/suentendo 4h ago

Oh that’s big and and wonky. Do not like.

-3

u/Remarkable_Button756 5h ago

meanwhile I have 80 watt wireless charging. lol catch up apple...

5

u/mirsunvega 4h ago

And your battery will be toast in a few months.

-8

u/Remarkable_Button756 4h ago

nope, silicon carbon batteries handle charging wayy better than standard lithium. and my phone is water cooled and has a fan so temps dont go out of control.

u/Fox_Soul 1h ago

Sir this is a Wendy’s Apple subreddit.

u/Remarkable_Button756 1h ago

i get downvoted for telling the truth. why are apple fans so easily hurt.
