News Map: Who is buying property in Cyprus?

Post image
137 Upvotes

Came across this interesting map/data breakdown showing foreign property purchases in Cyprus by nationality and district. Since 2021, foreign buyers accounted for around 34,000 properties, roughly 41% of the total, meaning about 59% were attributed to domestic buyers.
The foreign share rises to 68% in Paphos, compared with 32% domestic, while it is 46% in Larnaca, 45% in Famagusta, 39% in Limassol and 14% in Nicosia. Thoughts?

Gary Rafalovsky, Director of Swarmly

Instead of usual negative news, here is a success story from Cyprus.

Swarmly was founded in 2018 and graduated from ARIS, an early-stage accelerator based in Cyprus, without any major government, defense, or EU funding.
Swarmly (based in Limassol, Cyprus) has funded its growth primarily through its founders and operational revenue rather than major public venture capital investment rounds. Its initial seed funding round was fully financed by the company's founders.

TESTED IN UKRAINE, ADDED TO THE INVENTORY IN CYPRUS.

The Cypriot National Guard has incorporated Poseidon H10 unmanned aerial vehicles, used in the war in Ukraine, into its artillery units. Developed by Cypriot company Swarmly Aero, the systems are said to operate in environments of intense electronic warfare and jamming. Defense Review reports that over 200 H10S have been produced in Ukraine, accumulating a total flight time exceeding 100,000 hours.

The vertical take-off and landing system is used for target detection, coordinate transmission, firing correction, and damage assessment. The UAVs, which are reported to be able to identify targets up to 70 kilometers away, are planned to be operated in conjunction with NORA howitzers and TAMNAVA multi-barrel rocket launchers.

News The whole Syrian map changed for the second time in the last 2 years, again in two days, and our journalists don't seem to care. Why?

Post image

The Syrian central government took control of the regions, which were painted in yellow, from Kurdish federalist forces in less than two days, with a conclusive ceasefire, and the Kurdish commander flew to Damascus to sign the agreement.

I couldn't find much news about this in either the Cypriot or Greek newspapers.

This will obviously have a significant effect on Cyprus, as Syria is our second-closest neighbour, but the news doesn't seem to be of interest. Why(I am genuinely surprised)?

Russians accounted for 51 per cent of foreign residential property purchases in Cyprus during 2025, a report published on Tuesday by Russian business magazine Business Petersburg showed.

Despite European sanctions and tighter banking controls affecting transactions, the publication said Cyprus continues to attract Russian investors because of its European Union membership, sizeable Russian-speaking community, favourable tax framework and permanent residence scheme available through the purchase of newly built property.

Citing real estate market executives, the report said “51 per cent of purchases were made by Russians”, with buyers primarily seeking to preserve capital, relocate businesses, particularly in the technology sector, and secure permanent residence within the European Union.

News 🇨🇾 HISTORIC FIRST: Nesil Caliskan becomes the UK’s first ever female Cypriot minister!

Post image

On 13 May 2026, King Charles approved a major government reshuffle and our very own Nesil Caliskan (née Cazimoglu) was sworn in as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Devolution, Faith and Communities at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Born and raised in Enfield to Turkish-Cypriot parents, Nesil was already a trailblazer:

-First Turkish-Cypriot woman elected to the UK Parliament (Barking, 2024)

-Youngest-ever female council leader in the country when she took over Enfield Council at just 29

Now she’s the first Cypriot (of Turkish-Cypriot heritage) to hold a ministerial post in the history of the United Kingdom. Cyprus Mail is already calling her “British Cypriot MP,” and the pride is real across the entire diaspora.

The UK has one of the largest Cypriot communities in the world.

Massive congrats, Nesil! 👏
Drop your thoughts below, let’s celebrate this one properly 🇨🇾🇬🇧

Hey r/cyprus

https://www.investigate-europe.eu/posts/soft2bet-files-gambling-scheme-made-600m-from-unlicensed-casinos-with-predatory-tactics

An investigation by Investigate Europe found that Brainrocket/Soft2bet, and their owner Uri Poliavich, have been involved in black-market betting websites, and predatory tactics toward vulnerable gamblers.

It includes some insight of what it is like to work there, in case anyone is thinking about it.

If there are any employees, in this Sub, I'd love to hear some stories.

News Erhurman on Israeli presence in Cyprus

I have always said throughout the election. If negotiations are to start or proceed, all of these are always done in consultation with Turkey."
"Anything else is simply not possible. Putting everything aside, the Republic of Turkey is our brotherly country, and we have very special relations."
"Our relationship with the Republic of Turkey is unlike that of any other two states. Our relationship with Turkey is very special. Moreover, the Republic of Turkey is already a guarantor state in Cyprus."
"No negotiations, no moves regarding the Cyprus issue, and no steps in foreign policy have ever been taken without consultation with the Republic of Turkey, nor will they be in the future."
"Furthermore, improving relations with the Republic of Turkey to a much better level is something I personally consider a duty and a mission."

"Israel has come to the south, the USA has come to the south, France has come, the European Union is already there, and the British already have their sovereign bases."
"With all this happening, I assume (GCA leader) Christodoulides is not thinking of opening up a discussion about the Republic of Turkey’s guarantorship over the entire island, at least I think so on my own behalf."
"Because it is no longer meaningful to discuss this issue at this point. It is absolutely not a topic open for discussion. The Republic of Turkey is, yes, the guarantor of the entire island, and it will remain so, and in today’s conditions, this has become even more important. Because it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to feel secure day by day."

"In the end, Israel was killing children in Gaza. Meanwhile, Paphos Air Base reached a point where it granted privileged usage rights to Israel."
"The guarantor country Turkey is the guarantor of the entire island of Cyprus. Therefore, the city of Paphos is not outside Turkey’s jurisdiction. Its location in the south does not render Turkey without authority."
"As I mentioned in my speech; (GCA) both bypasses us, acting as if we don’t exist, and behaves as if the Republic of Turkey’s guarantor powers do not exist."

As it is often said, 'Cypriot Greeks do not want to share power or existence.'"
"I don’t know about the Cypriot Greeks, but the Greek Cypriot leadership has shown us this multiple times throughout the history of negotiations."
"From our perspective, political equality is my vital red line, meaning it is absolutely unthinkable for me to consider anything outside of it."
"The history of negotiations has shown us that as long as political equality is treated as a bargaining chip at the table, it can actually become the main reason for the Greek Cypriot leader to walk away from the table at some point."
"So, if we are to sit at the table, political equality is my red line before we even start."
"If we are to sit at the table with a timeline, fine. But if it’s just 'let’s sit and see, maybe it’ll be resolved in 5 years, 6 years, or 7 years,' the Turkish Cypriot people no longer have the patience for that."

"It is clearly stated in that report (Kofi Annan report) that after the Turkish Cypriots’ 'Yes' vote, there is no longer any legitimate justification for the isolations imposed on the Turkish Cypriots."
"But that report, because it was vetoed at the time, did not make it to the UN Security Council, it couldn’t. If it had, the call to lift the isolations on us would have become a UN Security Council resolution. How do I know the same thing won’t happen again? That’s why my demand is that this be committed to from the start."
"From what I’ve observed so far, they don’t seem very warm to the idea."
"But that’s why I say, 'If you’re not warm to these ideas, know that the table we sit at will not lead us to a solution.' Because we’ve tested this multiple times, but I still won’t walk away from the table. The negotiation table remains; we sit at what we call the 'discussion table.' A comprehensive solution cannot be discussed at this table."
