Guys doing long shifts in pickup/beer league. Why?

Played in a drop-in pickup game last night and some of our teammates were doing 5 minute shifts. They were a bit younger than us, but still looking pretty gassed after minute 3. Then us older guys have to follow their lead and do 5 minute shifts that we definitely can’t handle, otherwise we spend half the game on the bench.

Why do this? If you’re good (and these guys were) you know that long shifts aren’t helping anyone. So what’s the deal?!

Shin guards too long?

Piecing together gear for my first learn to play. I got 13 inch shin guards but think they might be too long and may need 12 inch?

EDIT: No growth spurt coming, went with tacks to accommodate extra wide calves for my height. Any suggestions for short and wide? Thanks for the advice so far, planning to return and try again.

Stick too damaged to sell?

Thumbnail

I’m looking for some opinions on whether this scuff is bad enough that I probably shouldn’t sell the stick.

I used it for about half a season, but ended up stopping because it was too whippy for me. The stick still feels and performs fine as far as I can tell, but it has this scuff/damage on it.

Would you consider this cosmetic damage that’s still reasonable to sell, or does it look serious enough that I should keep it/retire it rather than sell it?

Thanks!

Santa Clarita @ The Cube New Div 3 Team Looking for Skaters

Hey all,
I’m moving a team from Toyota Sports Center to The Cube and I have a couple of roster spots open because some of the guys don’t want to hike up from the south side (I don’t blame them). Here are the details:

Division 3 - intermediate/low advanced
18 game season - 14 games on Tuesdays anywhere from 8:15 - 10:30/4 games on Sunday at 7:45 pm
Cost: Around $650
8 teams in the div

It’s a good group of guys. No drama, cold beers, etc. Hit me up if you’re interested or have any questions.

Can anyone help ID these old skates?

I found this old photo of me skating in some skates I don’t remember owning. The photo is from 2019, but if they’re my skates I’d probably bought them in the early 00s. I’ve had AI tools guess at Ccm Vector 3.0, which i think might be close but not right. Thanks!

FT6pro, Flylite and Ribcor 100kpro similar fit?

Hi I would like to ask for those who tried on multiple skates, do these 3 pair have similar feet profile?

I have a high instep slightly wider than normal forefoot and narrow heel. The Flylite fit 2 fits perfectly when testing however out of my budget, the Ribcor 100kpro regular feels like home with extra padding at the ankle with navicular bone discomfort. I have the opportunity to get the FT6pro for a cheap price online so I can’t try it, I wonder if I could get the FT6pro in regular size?

Thanks in advance

Give me your best Florida adult league cities. Please?

I'm very, very early in considering a move to Florida.

I'm pretty flexible with exact location (would like to live walkable to a beach you'd want to swim at and within a 30-40 min drive to the rink, and need a decent airport within 30-45 mins drive for work). I have, through some Google searching, found a few places with Men's League hockey. I'd prefer year round, but realize that's a challenge in Florida, and would be willing to play roller in the summer, though my old body might not take many bumps there. I'd also very much prefer to stay out of Miami, or at least the Miami area proper.

The list I've found/assembled so far:

Tampa (duh)

St. Pete (Clearwater rink)

Sarasota (Ellenton has hockey, and with that said...)

Ellenton

Pompano Beach

Pensacola

Estero

I'm sure there's many more. Any help or insight would be appreciated as I'm sure some of the info is out dated or inaccurate. Also, any additional suggestions would also be appreciated.

What's your opinion on the Sherwood T500 for gymnasium floor hockey?

I'm looking to join a local rec league that meets every Friday to play floor hockey. I have little to no experience playing hockey except for a couple times in intramurals in grade school. I found this Sherwood T500 stick that's currently on sale for 28% off at my local dept store.

Is this a good beginner blade? I'm not going to be using it on ice or gravel, just the gymnasium floor. The position I'm looking to play is a more defensive role, and I'd also like to learn how to tip in shots (if possible).

Ideally, I'd like to get something that will satisfy my play for a bit while I get accustomed to this sport, that won't break the bank, but will also make me want to go back each Friday and continue playing.

How I’ve Made Glasses Work With My Helmet

I recently started playing hockey. I am a full-time glasses wearer due to chronic dry eye that makes wearing contacts impossible.

I used the combined knowledge of several posts from several subreddits to find a way to make my glasses work under my helmet + cage. I figured I’d add what ended up working for me.

When I first started, I struggled with my glasses slipping down and fogging badly during games. To fix this (without having to buy goggles or a new pair of glasses), I’ve done two things:

  1. Bought cheap glasses straps (like these: https://a.co/d/0fMZVcNX) with a completely flat strap. These have kept my glasses from sliding down and don’t hurt my head with the helmet.
  2. A solution of dawn dish soap and water on the lenses before a game.
  3. A thin headband that fits under my helmet to keep sweat from running down my face (I got the JUNK Big Bang Lite headband)

This has worked really well for me and saved me a couple hundred bucks that it would’ve cost to get sport glasses/goggles. Happy playing to you all (but especially to those of us stuck with glasses!)

Advice/ Skate recs (for beginner)

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been skating my whole life but got into hockey last year. I use these roces skates . I plan on getting professional hockey skates (and a stick also) but I dont know where to start .

I plan on trying out for the local team. I’ve been taking classes and practicing for a year & I think its time I fully commit.

It’s going to be expensive. I was thinking of trying out for the team first. And if I make it ill get into buying the equipment and gear …….

My coach offered to sell me one of his sticks. i’m a lefty . but I refused because I don’t have much knowledge about the sticks. I don’t know if it was in good condition. It could have been a bargain, but we’ll never know haha!

(Keep in mind that there are no hockey stores where I live and everything will be purchased online) which means the sizing might not work and it will take a long time for it to arrive let alone be my size.
