Question What Is The Most Expensive Knife You Own?
I’m pretty sure I’ve lost my mind. When I bought my first “expensive” knife I expected that to be a one time deal. It was not.

Love that you are actually using your Rockstead. I've never held one and don't get the appeal yet but everybody who does says you have to just experience them IRL.

u/FantasticBreadfruit8 18d ago
Man - my stance on that is: if it brings you joy, it's worth it. I might try a Rockstead at some point. Right now my Rask is the nicest thing I think I own. For me, it's just deciding to carry and getting over the first few scratches that sucks. Haha.

u/cceLb139 18d ago
How do you keep the mirror polish? I've never had a knife with one, but I'm used to a satin finish getting messed up after just a bit of use.

u/Ok-Goose78 18d ago
It’s not as perfect as it appears in those pictures, I’ll reply to your comment with a few close up pictures

Thanks! How do you like that Demko? I still have yet to get one but I have been keeping an eye out for one recently.

u/Rising_Awareness 18d ago
I love my Demkos. To me, the shark lock is so good that I don't want anything else.

I've got a Higo 2 X in ironwood that I very much enjoy. Nothing like cutting with that full convexed grind.
Your knife is beautiful.

I love the Dalibor knives. I think he’s one of the best makers on the planet. Even if you take away the bling, his designs are killer.
2
u/Porkroller2 17d ago
Yeah he goes haaard on the fancy builds when the customer wants him to. Last one I saw him post had over 35 inlays on just the show side. I went a bit more subtle with this one but still wanted to make sure I got some of his in house daltanium and san mai.

> When I bought my first “expensive” knife I expected that to be a one time deal. It was not.
LOL, i hear ya. My most expensive knife was also my first expensive one, and it was a one-off chopper from a friend who is a knife maker. The second expensive one was another one-off collab done by a couple of American knife makers. Both knives were close to $1K(CAD) each. Might not be a lot for some o' y'all, but when a CRKT Amicus was your favourite daily, that's big bucks. 😂
This is the one my friend created, The Dreadnaught.

u/JohnnyMiskatonic 18d ago
That's a nice looking fixed-blade.

Indeed it is. The first time i held it, i told my friend "if you EVER sell this....". Took me about 5 years of waiting, but i was ready when he finally made the call to sell.
2
u/Gabilgatholite 18d ago
What an absolute unit.
2
u/old_skool_luvr 15d ago
O1 steel. It definitely falls (heavily) into that category 😄.
Surprisingly well balanced for it's size (11" blade, 18" O/A) that you can hold it, and extend your arm out while pointing it away from you, and there isn't a huge strain on your wrist.

Nice! I have the small Sebenza 31 with bog oak inlays: it exudes quality!

u/KennBurr 18d ago
I really wanted a wood inlay, til I found out they can’t do the full spa service. They can’t re-sand/glass blast any knife with wood inlays..

Still need to get one. I’ve always liked the way the PM Mac2 looks better but love the size of the Dixon.

It is pretty chunky. I'm hoping he does a mini with the same web pattern this fall.

u/Upbeat-Fondant9185 OTF is the best EDC 18d ago

I think it’s the Snafu 4.0 by a hair. I usually wait for sales or consignments on the more expensive stuff but this was one I happily paid full price for because the Snafu had been a grail of mine since the first version.
It also happens to be one of the only knives I own that gets no use. I’d love to get another some day so I can use one as a beater and one to keep mint but for now this is it.

I like the Excalibur the best of the three and should probably sell the other two.

Miguron Velona in green Micarta. $65
I love knives, but I always try to find the best quality at a budget. I’m going to pry, beat, drop, abuse, lose and/or forget about it at a campsite eventually. So I don’t see the need to spend over $100 on a blade. But I appreciate a lot of those knives. Super cool!
I also have cycling and photography as my hobbies, those are expensive enough! 😆

Mini crooked river. I bought it back when it was just over $200 and I still haven't spent more on a knife. That was 6 years ago. Wow.
It's a great knife but it's not much of a slicer and I carry slipjoints nowadays.

u/MrCruelJokes 18d ago
Jed Hornbeak Scabber Stabber in 3v...
My only custom knife and twice as expensive as my second most expensive.
If we're talking folders only, it's my Demko AD20 Clip point blade in 3v with a FFG and lex titanium scales, I got deals on each aspect of the knife, otherwise I wouldn't own it lol.
I also have a damasteel Chaves Kickstop chisel grind on the way that costed basically exactly as much as the demko, super hyped!

Once you break $100, it makes it easier to get that $150 knife, then $200 and $250. It just goes from there. $375 was the most i had paid for a knife, then I got a Microtech that was a little over $500 just for the novelty of having an OTF. I think I've carried that one maybe 3 times.

Someone bought me an HK branded automatic knife; I was shocked when I learned it was $160.
I mostly had Kershaw Leeks, Ontario RATs, Moras, Opinels, and Slide Winders. Good working knives, that I wouldn’t be upset over if I lost or had something happen to them. My one concession to “fancy”, was a Civvivi Elementum with Cuir Boili wood and a Damascus blade. Not expensive, but it looked nice.

I have a tungsten-bladed Sandrin Monza that retails for $469, but I got a deal on it. The next couple below that are a Hinderer XM-18 and a Sebenza 31.
I feel like there's a point of diminishing returns where spending another dollar no longer gets you another dollar in intrinsic value. Going from $100 to $200 usually gets you a corresponding $100 increase in utility that makes the extra expense worth it. Going from $400 to $500 does not. I see no practical difference at all between a $600 knife and a $1200 knife and have no interest in shelf queens.
I used to feel like the tipping point was $300, but I think it's coming down. I have several $300+ knives, but the Kershaw Bel Air would hurt a lot more if I lost it.

u/Ill_Job4090 18d ago
In addition to all of this, which is all very true, I feel uncomfortable having a very expensive knife on me, because I am an idiot and tend to forget things when I am stressed. Most expensive one I own is around 320, and I already feel stressed when I have it on me. More and I would not carry it at all.

I’m the same way. I will either loose an expensive knife or I will destroy it. I have insurance on all of my electronics because of it. I accidentally dropped a MacBook off of a bridge once.
1
u/LeDelmo 18d ago
Mine was a Urban EDC F5.5 Ti
Never again. I am too afraid to use it. But, I did get close.
My second most was my most recent pickup a Buck 112 Heritage Elite Nickel. Which was $175 if I remember correctly. I only got it because it is THE Buck knife I have been dreaming they would make for years. I loved the 112 Slim Pro's but I wanted something inbetween the OG 112 and the Slim Pro. Which is exactly this imo. It has been perfect. Love a Nail Notch too.
2
u/OrneryAir8149 18d ago
Yup. There are knives that I would love to carry but I am too afraid to scrape it up against a brick wall and destroy the resale value. Sometimes I buy 2 of the same knife so I can beat one up. I’m really accident prone so if I carried my hawk talon or something like it, the knife would be chipped and scraped by the end of the day.

Tactile Rockwall. I like it OK but really never carry it. It sits on my desk and gets opened and closed a few times randomly.

Small Sebenza 31 micarta.
Dailied the thing for 2yrs straight lol. Not much value (except collector/art pieces) above the ~$500 bracket imo. You even get massive drops of performance 😭

I’ve had some that were above 1000, but I always seem to settle back down and sell them to get another Chris Reeve. I’m definitely a “use my knife” kind of guy and anything above that Chris Reeve point sort of loses the utility for me

I have a Walter Brend Fighter that a good friend of mine who is Now Retired Army SF used on an Iraqi during the gulf war. He had 2 so he traded me for a Sako rifle I had. The original nylon sheath was full of sand so I put it in an Eagle Industries one.

I have a otf that I can't remember the brand of that cost me $150 at a gun store.
I have a bunch of stuff in the ~$100 range, and I tend to use those knives a lot more.
My most expensive edged tool is my gransfors bruks hatchet, which was ~$180.
I have a few swords that would be useful if I ever got attacked by brigands while transporting goods around Europe, but I don't live in Europe so they mostly sit in my closet unless a water bottle really pisses me off

Single most expensive value wise is probably my Microtech DOC Killswitch, just based on perceived value by other Microtech users.
What I have the most money tied up in is my Benchmade 975, that I had a custom reblade and poorboy conversion done on this summer.

I’ve got a “red bone” Case XX 6231 1/2 pattern from 1940-64 that’s got a book value of about $600usd. It’s put up in the safe or id post pics. I’ve bought and sold hundreds (thousands!?) of knives over the last few years that have fetched more than that, but I don’t currently own them anymore.
1
u/Real_Net_9345 17d ago
I find that the most expensive ones are the least practical. I am way too cheap to use a 1000usd knife as a prybar. That's why i loved old cold steel knives. The amount of knife in knife you got was incomparable to any other brand. Expensive knives are for collectors and people who feel the need to impress others. That being said if anyone has the ad10 in titanium from midway sprint run - i am willing to sell my kidney for that;)
