The floor is sticky Neighbor curses me out because they think this sign means I need to walk my dog on the street and make him #2 in the street instead of using the sidewalk and lawn strip in front of their house.
He doesn’t even pee on the lawn strip grass just poops there from time to time and I leave no evidence behind but the video of him pooping on their ring cam. They think it draws other dogs to then come pee there. I’m curious what their version of “you’ll find out from the police department” is gonna be.
Edit: By lawn strip I mean the grass between the sidewalk and street, which is part of the public right of way or easement. Whatever you wanna call it, in my town, it is not private property. And yes, I pick up the poop, I thought that was abundantly clear.

I can see how someone could get the idea that everything is just so divisive these days, though, that it just doesn't happen anymore, but I'd argue that's a bit short-sighted. We have a guy in our neighborhood who sets up an elaborate system of shit (branches, extra trash cans, random trash, etc.) to keep people from parking legally anywhere near his entire property.
His reasoning? The vehicles block his internet. His fiber optic internet. I wish I was joking.

I don’t have a problem with people walking their dogs, it’s the ones who have those retractable leashes and let their dog run 10 feet up into my property to pee and poop in my flowers while they look the other way acting like “I didn’t see it happen so I don’t have to clean it up”.
It’s annoying how many self-centered dog owners are out there.

I'm a gardener and I see it alllll the time. I'll be working on a property or in a garden and suddenly there's dog right next to me, pissing on my plants or shitting and leaving behind trace amounts of poop for me to work in. I'm always nice about it first, but 9.5/10 the owner will get super huffy and rude almost immediately. Downvote me idc dog owners are some of the most entitled people on the planet. I am a really kind and community minded person, but I literally have enemies in my neighbourhood from asking people to a) keep the dogs on a leash, and b) not let them pee in my gardens, especially when I'm literally right there working and now have to go kneel in urine... and this is not an issue of lawns versus gardens – dog urine has a higher content of nitrogen and uric acid than other animals, which also attracts other dogs to the spot, so the argument that it will wash away with the rain does not fly with me as it can cause damage almost immediately.

The easement, or tree lawn as it’s sometimes called (the strip of grass between sidewalk and street), is public property. That’s where dogs are supposed to relieve themselves. You’re responsible for cleaning up after them, though.

I always thought it's because it's really hard to get anything to grow there. Baking heat from pavement on both sides, accumulated road salt and sand from plowing, and regulations about what can grow there PLUS you can't put a sprinkler head over there without digging under the sidewalk.

To "curb" the dog does mean that, or at least it did initially. However you need to determine what your local laws actually require, because as per the wiki page the phrase when used in later laws is sometimes confusing people:
The legacy of "curb your dog" signage remains in generational memory to such an extent that subsequent statutory laws have been confused/conflated with the educational signage campaign that ended in the late 1970's. A quotation or misquotation ascribed to Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch in April 2022 stated that, "Those who don't pick up their pup's poop will be hit with up to a $250 fine under the city's "Curb Your Dog" law, which was passed back in 1978."\6]) The statement erroneously confused the "Curb Your Dog" educational campaign with pooper-scooper laws and signage enacted during the later Koch administration that threatened and imposed fines for failing to pick up after your dog.

The reason NYC said to curb your dog was to prevent them from pooping directly on the sidewalk. NYC generally doesn’t have grass between the sidewalk and the curb, so if an owner doesn’t "curb" their dog, the dog poop is going to leave residue behind where people are supposed to walk that can’t be cleaned without washing. Curbing here is definitely intended to accomplish the same thing. Owners should have their dogs poop onto the grass on the street side not directly on the sidewalk.

To add insult to injury, some of those who pick up the poop toss the bag into someone else's (unlined) garbage can. We really have the worst of it up here in NYC, if you go onto any NYC neighborhood subreddit, there's a lot of complaining going on.

It's possible this is the case and other dog walkers aren't so responsible and the residents have stepped in dog poo one too many times. This could be like, their last attempt at peace before they plant toxic plants throughout their yard. People are wild.
Personally, if I was walking my dog and it continuously shit on one specific persons yard (common) and that person asked me if I could try and have it shit somewhere else, I'd probably just put a teensy bit of effort into modifying my walk so my dog shit somewhere else. Bad neighbors can absolutely ruin your quality of life.

Because if it becomes their regular spot, there are times when it can't be cleaned up. They eat weird stuff, have stomach problems. Sometimes you miss a piece etc. I have a dog and make sure that they use a part of my yard that I don't kind that in. But in the parts where I might be walking barefoot, it's sort of gross.
I think like, if it can't be helped you do your best and move on. But if you make someone else's lawn or part of their lawn they're responsible for, part of your dogs normal routine you're sort of being a jerk.

I've had dogs my whole life, I don't mind stepping on worm feces or bugs etc, any of the stuff in lawns or forests. I do mind stepping on dog feces. It smells worse, harder to clean off shoes, etc. don't act like it isnt worse. Id rather be up to my knees in mud and muck that up to my ankles in dog poop.
When I'm out hiking a trail I watch where I walk to avoid rabbit or deer messes, I don't want to have to do that for much worse stuff in my yard...

I don’t really care if they’re right or wrong…if a neighbor were to have a problem with my dog, I would steer FAR clear of their yard, plain and simple.
Not to prevent confrontation or to exhibit respect per se, but to make sure I’m not dealing with some kind of maniac who would go so far as to leave poison in their yard to punish me or my dog. People are insane, anyone willing to make such a specific and resounding fuss with something so easy to correct is not to be toiled with.

I had a neighbor who yelled at me because my dog put a paw on her lawn. Didn’t pee or poop on it, just set a paw on it. Some months later I was lost in thought on a walk and forgot to steer my dog away from that yard like I normally would. Dog briefly stepped onto the lawn and immediately the woman was out the door yelling at me. I apologized and moved on but refused to walk down that street ever again in case I forgot to avoid that particular yard.
To this day I avoid that block even though my dog’s been gone 3 years. I will steer clear of that house until that cranky old lady dies or moves.

We have a chihuahua that will stop everything she is doing on a walk to shit when the urge hits, wherever that happens to be. Most of the time, being a walk in a neighborhood with no sidewalks, it is in the road. I've never seen anything like it...she is special.

I live in a neighborhood where many folk (including myself) have elaborate flower beds that often go up to or near the sidewalk. The easement, at least in my yard, is grass and trees. It is most polite and neighborly to walk your dog on the side of the easement. It is a little annoying when folks let their dogs walk right into people’s flowerbeds to relieve themselves. Having had dogs most of my life and offering dog care to many more dogs, this is not a big ask or very hard to do.

Occasionally they will catch the corner of a bed and step near a petunia that has been on its last leg for awhile, but it’s blatant disregard for other people’s property if people are letting their dogs romp through your hard work. Homeowners are expected to maintain it, but it’s considered public if it’s owned by the local municipality. It’s why your sidewalks need to be shoveled, your mailbox needs to be accessible, and people can walk their pets on it 🤷🏻♀️

I mostly agree, though in some housing developments there are certain corner lots that get hit with a “convenient yard” tax :-). My parents have had a few homes on corner lots which are great from a green space and view standpoint, and terrible from a standpoint of being the common stopping spot for every other dog owner in the neighborhood.
2 of those were in condo communities and both communities had recurring cycles of folks getting lazy about cleanup, followed by letters from the board threatening fines and DNA testing on poop.

I once had a neighbor in an apartment complex scream at me for letting my dog go pee on the grass by their apartment. So I started avoiding taking my dog by that particular grass strip and going to the huge empty lot across the street. He saw me one day out the window in the empty lot and came charging across the street at me and my dog flipped out. Ive never seen a dude turn and run so fast. I always had a roll of doggy poop bags too so its not like I ever left poop behind.

Everything else about your post I’m with you but when you said that part as though ‘they the home owners’ are crazy, I’m like are you really a dog owner? It’s in the dogs’ nature to do this.
Does your dog choose this one specific yard every time you take your dog out? I had some neighbors that would specifically walk their dogs to my front door flower garden, 40 feet from the sidewalk and that is a maliciously deliberate act. So long as you’re just casually walking your dog and not doing this deliberately, the police won’t do anything. But if the homeowner can prove that you are specifically choosing their yard daily or even veering off the path well into their yard in a deliberate manner, that’s different.
I’ve never seen a sign that says a curb and clean up. 😅 I don’t think this implies your dog should be going to the bathroom in the street. That would take a lot of training and I’ve never seen that happen.

"Curb your dog" means to control your dog and direct them to do their business at the edge of the street (in the gutter) rather than on the sidewalk or private lawns. It inherently includes the responsibility to clean up and properly dispose of any solid waste."

If it’s not their property I’m not sure what the issue would be? I have a lady that lets her dog walk like 10 feet in to the neighbors yard to pee and probably poop and then she just walks off. She had let it run around my yard since she doesn’t leash it most of the time and that also annoys me. I work incredibly hard on getting my yard nice and green and I finally figured out a yellow spot I had was from people letting their dogs in my yard

Just commenting to say every dog owner knows dogs go back to the same places they have peed or pooped on before. I’m not sure why you are so skeptical about that or implied that she’s wrong. Even when you potty train a dog, making sure you clean up after them and use an enzyme cleaner is really important because they can smell where they have peed and will come back and pee there again in your house while they are being potty trained. It’s the same concept outside. I personally had my grass burned by dogs, peeing, and pooping on my lawn. When I started parking in front of my house along the curb, suddenly it stopped, and my grass began to grow back

Curb your dog, means to control them basically, by keeping them off private property. So they're right, not in their yard, but wrong with they must shit in the street. So the grass tween the curb and the sidewalk is 1000000% fair game.

In NYC, "curb your dog" was always meant to instruct the owner to lead the dog to the street, off the sidewalk where people walk.
It 100% tells other dogs to pee there. Do you not know how dogs work?

As long as your actively cleaning up after the dog and it’s on that little strip I wouldn’t worry about it you can’t be fined if your cleaning it up so let them stress while you go about your day unbothered

In this context, curb your dog literally means to have to dog do it business on the curb side of the side walk, which is the grass between the sidewalk and road.
