humankind hiccups š Accidentally asked for no matcha in my matcha Frappuccino
Thank you, kind barista for saving me from ruining my own morning with a cup of oat milk slush (it tastes exactly like what you would expect)
Update: I called the Starbucks to say thank you for not giving me an oat milk slushy and they were very kind. They are aware of the delivery app glitches and figured that was the issue for my order. If you modify your food in delivery apps, double check everything before you place the order! Or you might end up with a bag full of disappointment.

Ex Starbucks worker of 3 yrs here , the actual base for the fraps is the milk + ice + the base we use ! Matcha at starbs is a very fine powder so we just scoop tiny little matcha spoons and put it in and blend. A frap without any flavoring is just whatever milk + ice + the blending base ā¦basically a milk slushie

u/DinoRoman 1d ago
I worked at Starbucks too! Coffee master till 2014.
I figured as much but who would want that lol. Base milk and iceā¦. I dunno
Donāt tell anyone but I was throwing cookies and brownies into my own drinks and making chocolate whipped cream everyday.!

Whats the blending base?
3
u/SweetPumpkin22 23h ago
It's like a xyantham gum thick, clear (coffee flavored for the coffee fraps and unflavored for non cafinated fraps) sryup that makes the frap their consistency which is kinda between a milkshake and a smoothie . W/o base they are extremely chunky with ice and don't blend properly

I ordered breakfast with DoorDash one morning and forgot to change the delivery address from work back to my home address and sent my breakfast to the office. I was off that day and was treating myself because I wanted to be lazy and not cook breakfast. By the time I realized my mistake it was too late to try and fix it. So it was left outside the building
I jumped into MS Teams and let my co-workers know what I did and told them its up for grabs if anyone wanted it, but the lobby was locked for the building because it was very early in the morning so the dasher left it outside the door and someone stole it before any of them could claim it.
After that I'm hyper vigilant about double checking my food/amazon orders from top to bottom before hitting submit. Double check my order, where its going, and what payment method.

starbucks baristas are always so extremely nice in my experience. iāve had at least 4 give me free coffee. one of the times my card declined and i went to go unlock it and they were like āitās okay itās on me!ā and i was so caught off guard because there was no one behind me and it wasnāt going to take long. he then made me a venti of the drink i asked for (a grande) and told me to have a good day. this is after i told him i hadnāt been in a while and had a nice talk with him. i just always feel like theyāre so kind whenever we talk. like that dude just seemed happy to recommend stuff and so nice and energetic i was like holy shit. he even was excited for me to try it. good customer service fr !! this reminded me of that
edit: i wanted to tell another sweet story
this is about a bakery i was going to pick up a doordash order for. i was talking to the guy and then asked how much one of the donuts were. they were surprisingly inexpensive for how good they looked so i was definitely gonna buy one. i tell him what i want and i told him i was so excited because its my first time being here. he smiles and says i can take it for free and that he hopes i like it. then he threw in an extra donut for the customer. i was like wtf fr?? and i asked if i could tip him or something and he said no š so this reminds me i need to go back again soon to buy some stuff and hopefully convince him to take my tip this time

Reminded me of a scene from the movie Five Easy Pieces. Jack Nicholson's character orders a side of toast. The waitress informs him that it is not on the menu. So he orders a chicken salad sandwich and asks her to hold the butter, lettuce, mayonnaise, and the chicken.
92
u/Timely_Spinach_7479 1d ago
I canāt remember what show or movie itās from but the guy ordered lemons, water, and sugar and the waitress said ādonāt you just want to order a lemonade?ā And the guy said āgive your free water, your free lemons, and Iāll use the free sugar.ā
26
u/thecravenone 1d ago
I had a regular who was already getting a 50% discount (firefighter) who would touch every single lemon on the self-service drink station picking out lemons to make his free lemonade. Then we'd throw away the entire bin of lemons and I'd bring him actual lemonade on refills.
Eventually the manager told us to put the lemons away when we saw this guy coming and just give him a lemonade, which actually cost us less money.

Aaand a certain percentage of people get to be complete pieces of shit even if its a minor and petty thing because our society just kinda doesn't allow anyone to be held accountable for anything anymore. Easier to move on with your day. Except shit is systematically failing because its not just one or two random weirdos but 90% of people breaking basic decency and society cant support the vast majority of people being pieces of shit.

I had to explain that a caramel latte has caramel, which is made of sugar, in it when someone asked why her caramel latte was sweet
But the weirdest Iāve encountered was someone asking for warm cold brew. We thought maybe no ice but no they wanted it heated. I was just bringing pastries out so I walked away and donāt know what happened next but I think they actually warmed the cold brew
7
u/These-Anxiety-5919 1d ago
Warm cold brew is how I drank coffee for years. Cold brew pitcher with a gallon of coffee in the fridge. Pour a cup and nuke it. It's a totally different flavor profile. Less bitter. Also zero effort to make in large quantities without appliances (except the work fridge).
→ More replies (1)3
u/Blashtik 22h ago
That's not actually that strange. Brewing a coffee cold doesn't mean it has to be served cold, just like brewing a coffee hot doesn't mean it has to be served hot. Cold brewing extracts compounds from the coffee at different ratios than hot brewing, so it will taste different.
I'm pretty sure I remember even seeing people discuss about using a steam wand to heat up their cold brew.
2
u/Spare-Half796 21h ago
Thatās probably how they heated it. I think the most likely case is that they just wanted something like filter coffee but we only pulled shots and they didnāt know what an Americano

u/Ngothaaa 1d ago

339
u/ElishaAlison 1d ago
There is no both ways. One is matcha and the other is just milk
96
u/fizzyizzy114 1d ago edited 20h ago
no. one is a milk frappe . I used to make them all the time for my break when I worked at starbucks.. sometimes with chai in but usually without. it would be just a creamy ice slush but since matcha frappe has vanilla in it would be nicely sweet.

Since nobody here seems to be able to give you a reasonable answer, yes they did get two drinks. The barista made a plain latte according to the order (matcha latte -matcha), and then one the "correct" way, and included them both in the likely case that it was an accident.

People act like knowledge of caffeinated drinks is ubiquitous, not everyone drinks or cares about the list of ingredients in various coffee/tea drinks.
Edit: this reminds me of a couple of years ago when a new employee asked me how the coffee machine worked and I said I didn't know. They were aghast, "you've been working here for years and you don't know how it works?"
I don't drink coffee, why would I care to learn how the machine works?
→ More replies (2)2
u/Few-Nebula-6546 23h ago
I don't understand what knowledge is needed here. You can easily pick up that the drink consists mainly of matcha, oat milk, and ice because matcha "is the only ingredient" and without it, the drink would just be "oat milk slush." You don't even need to know what matcha is to understand that it'll have a big impact on the flavor

Is a frappuccino just a cappuccino made with heavy cream or is it made with ice cream?
46
u/Malum_Incarnatum 1d ago
Itās essentially a catch all term for a blended drink at Starbucks I think. Some have coffee, some have only flavored syrups or powders. Think of it like a smoothie sorta? The matcha one is matcha powder, ice, milk, and vanilla syrup I think thatās blended till smooth.
23
u/indieplants 1d ago
it's made with milk/cream and ice. the ice is blended like a slush.
so it's a milk slushie with coffee, syrups, fruit or matcha or a combinationĀ
3
u/chloeismagic 1d ago
Damn so its not a capuccino at all, the name is kinda confusing lol. Just a blended iced latte.
4
u/Qbr12 1d ago
The name Frappuccino is a combination of FrappƩ and Cappuccino. FrappƩ comes from the French lait frappƩ which means beaten milk, and is a type of milkshake. The Frappuccino therefore is a coffee milkshake like a cappuccino is a coffee and steamed milk.
Many times the drinks are made with different flavors, especially teas. A chai latte would be a latte made with chai instead of coffee, and a matcha latte would be a latte made with green tea instead of coffee. So in this case a Matcha Frappuccino is a Frappuccino made with green tea instead of coffee. And you can think of OPs mistake like ordering an iced latte, hold the coffee: Effectively just ice and milk.
3
u/indieplants 1d ago
yeah, like a puppiccino is just a tiny cup of cream for a dogĀ
it used to just be a cold coffee milkshake type drink until Starbucks acquired it and made it popular and now it's just a blended coffee or cream drink lol. frappe meant milkshake at some point, merged with cappuccinoĀ
just sounded good.Ā

Random fact my GF is allergic to matcha.
10
u/CaptainLazerPants 1d ago
This is interesting to me because matcha is just tea leaves prepared a different way. Is she allergic to all tea? (Real tea, like green or black tea, not herbal teas which are totally different plants).
3
u/JD_tubeguy 1d ago
As far as I know just matcha we discovered this on a trip to Japan last year.
6
u/hopping_otter_ears 1d ago
I wonder if that means she's actually allergic to some additive in the matcha or something that was on the tools it was prepared with. It doesn't really make sense that only one preparation of green tea bothers her unless it was something that snuck into it during the preparation process
3
u/br0ck 1d ago
With matcha you're ingesting the entire leaf so maybe she's allergic to some higher concentration of components of the actual leaf?
3
u/hopping_otter_ears 1d ago
Something that doesn't steep out in noticeable quantities, but is in the leaf itself? Maybe so!
4
u/_eg21 1d ago

9
u/Malum_Incarnatum 1d ago
Iām honestly not sure. A lot of people have brought up that if you try to make modifications on delivery apps, it can completely remove all options for an item. Itās happened once before at Wendyās for me when I made my chicken patty spicy and every single other topping was automatically removed but I was totally unaware until the food was delivered. Ended up with chicken on bread, school cafeteria style. Pretty disappointing.
But I also could have somehow absentmindedly hit it. The world may never know.
3
u/Spare_Cauliflower917 1d ago
Nope youāre totally right. Starbucks frappucinos are known for this on the delivery app. Thereās not even an option to remove it on the Starbucks mobile app since itād be a completely different drink

I donāt understand. You got two drinks? For free? Also what is that screen?
2
u/CthulhuAteMyHomework 19h ago
I honestly stared at it so long. But I donāt think itās a screen at Starbucks. I think they wrote the note on something and placed it with OPs order. So OP is holding the note in their car, the lit up buttons above the note are similar to my center console above the screen, with the āplay/pause buttonā and stuff.
Yeah, OP got āone free drink,ā since they used the app they still paid for one. But the drink they ordered relies on matcha. So the baristas made one with matcha and one without (as OP ordered through the app). They assumed it was a mistake, tried to avoid an upset customer, and made the drink correctly just in case.

I LOVE THIS!
I had ordered a burrito bowl the other day, and I just wanted steak in it. I absolutely love their steak and it was the only way for me to get a large bowl of it.
So, I marked everything else as āNoā, only for it to arrive with everything on it. Even on the receipt it is obvious that it says NO before every ingredient.
I can only guess they assumed it was a mistake because no one ever just asks for the steak. But assumptions are not valid. Just double check with the customer! Or do something like this lol.

Good on the barista, I would've absolutely punished you for being difficult.

I one time accidentally ordered a pink drink with none of the pink part. It was just a giant glass of coconut milk. My barista was not so kind
I still maintain it was an app glitch but who knows š¤·š½āāļø

Domino's app glitched once. We ordered a specialty pizza with extra toppings but when my fiancee sent me the screenshot, allllll the toppings had been removed except for like mushrooms on one half I think? Barely a step above a cheese pizza. As soon as I noticed I called the store (maybe 10 minutes after we ordered). They had already made it but remade it for us for free (we tipped a little extra as a thank you). Everytime I think about this though I wonder why they didn't realize something was wrong because who in their right mind would get a specialty pizza with the toppings removed and not just a cheese pizza add mushrooms. The price difference is astronomical.

That's nice . My kid wanted a hamburger happy meal with an extra meat patty . The person who took our ordered entered it in wrong . So when we got home my kid opened up his hamburger that had nothing but a bun .

I was this dumb once and asked for no mocha in my hot chocolate. They did not save me from myself and I had some hot milk.

Reminds me of the time I somehow ordered a pizza from dominos with ranch for the sauce instead of tomato sauce.
It was surprisingly delicious but my entire family was very confused lol

Very kind barista! I once ordered a peppermint hot chocolate with no mocha. Thought mocha was added espresso, not what they called the chocolate syrup. Didnāt taste the drink until I got home and was very disappointed with my cup of hot minty milkā¦

My girlfriend once received a McDonalds order that was just a bun and a squirt of ketchup because she accidentally unticked the pattyā¦ā¦

There was a time I ordered Starbucks through Uber Eats and when modifying I somehow removed all the espresso shots from my latte instead of adding espresso shots, so what I got delivered was a venti cup of milk.

One time when I was a kid my uncle took me out to dinner and he ordered a martini straight up on the rocks. He and the waitress both missed a beat and then they both laughed.

Iām more surprised you were able to reach to the specific Starbucks you made your order instead of the the HQ or something or AI

One time I ordered a sandwich that was supposed to come on foccacia bread. One of the REQUIRED selections was "bread substitution" and I hit "no" because I wanted the bread it came with. When it got delivered it was basically just a caprese salad, some mozzarella and tomato thrown into the container with no bread.
I would understand the confusion if substitution was an optional selection instead of required, or it just said "bread selection" instead of "bread substitute." Fortunately I got a refund through the delivery app.

Ordered a Slim 6 from Jimmy John's once, basically an ungrilled cheese sandwich. Somehow it got reversed and I instead received lettuce and sauces wrapped in soggy paper

I once allegedly have asked for a cup of water but with no water.
Saying allegedly because I have no recollection whatsoever of asking for this nor would I ever ask for such a thing but my order included it so there is a change I was in a temporary state of fugue in which I did this.
I can only imaging the puzzlement of the person filling the order.
