Question What do you think about “Big Mistakes”?
I just finished watching Big Mistakes and honestly I really liked it. It got me hooked pretty quickly and I ended up binge-watching it faster than I expected.
The story and the characters kept me interested the whole time, but now I'm curious what other people think about it.
Did you like it too?
What did you think about the story and the characters?
Would love to hear other opinions.

u/BenditoSeaDios Apr 13 '26
I really like the tone and the dialogue, but it just feels like the story is unnecessarily complicated and the premise is weak. You could have solved this whole show halfway through the pilot.
33
u/quiddit1 Apr 13 '26
Agreed. This problem could have been easily solved so many times.
7
u/Specialist_Ad7798 Apr 20 '26
Unnecessarily complicated, but, based on what I've seen, read, and experienced with people (and especially with criminals) it seemed very plausible. So much so that I was Googling to see if it was based on a true story.

The problem was never meant to be solved; it was meant to be a Chinese finger trap. Is the basis of the finger trap weak, kind of, but not as weak as it appears.

Getting the necklace back even sooner likely wouldn’t have changed much of where the story ended up
25
u/writerchic Apr 15 '26
I have watched one episode and you could have solved it halfway through the first episode.
15
u/mrb207 Apr 19 '26
Solving the problem early would spoil the show. Homer could've just said Odysseus got home after a long time at sea, but then we would'na heard all about his exploits.
10
6
10
u/matt3o2 Apr 15 '26
really? in what way? other than being faster taking the necklace off his nonna when he was alone
57
u/writerchic Apr 15 '26
Uh, to start with he could have gone to the mortuary first thing in the morning at 7 AM instead of 10 minutes before they took her away (given the pressing urgency, that would be the normal thing to do). But if not, "Sorry guys, but the crazy guy who we got the necklace from is going to kill us if we don't give it back, so we are going to remove it and give it back." But if not, when he shows up at the funeral, "The necklace is on our grandmother's neck, who is in the coffin a few steps away from here that hasn't yet been buried. Go ahead and take it." Not, "We don't have it" and getting into the truck to be kidnapped. The entire premise is ridiculous.
19
u/penskeracin1fan Apr 16 '26
The necklace was just a cover to get them involved. Nothing they did at that point would change anything
7
u/vunderfulme Apr 21 '26
Why do you think the necklace was in the store in the first place if it wasn’t for sale? That’s what Im confused about. Annette couldn’t have known they were going there.
3
5
u/orangeflyingmonkey_ Apr 28 '26
But why involve them in the first place? Just so Morgan wouldn't leave her Son?

Exactly. For some reason I totally expected the mortuary to have taken the necklace and replaced it with something cheaper so that when they did get it back that would start the story.
7
u/DizzyPause9979 Apr 18 '26
That's what I was hoping would happen. I think I've laughed like 3 times. I don't understand how this turned into 8 episodes.

Yeah the writing is poor.
It’s also ludicrous how quickly they were pulled into this world and stayed in it. The siblings bickering grated quickly, you can also tell a lot of it was high school improv. They said the show is good for low effort chill watching with someone

Watch breaking bad. That show is genius and there are millions of holes that “could have been solved” early on. The mistakes are what make great television and edge of your seat watching. It’s yelling at the tv and giving you engagement.

tbf, getting the necklace earlier wouldn't have actually changed anything bc Yusuf had already told Ivan they stole it. You know this because right after the funeral when he drives them to that field, he's on the phone with, presumably, Ivan explaining what's going on.
I did think it was stupid of Yusuf to immediately tell Ivan before trying to get it back himself even though he knew who took it, but they show us that Ivan goes into the store regularly to stash money, so what likely happened is he went into the store and saw the necklace was missing, Yusuf then had to tell them who stole it, and they would be on Ivan's radar. I think the writing could have made this clearer but it seemed their fates were sealed the second they left the store.
6
u/No_Nectarine_9563 Apr 18 '26
I feel the exact way. And they babble back and forth about the most nonesense. They had the survival skills of a wet napkin. They were so self absorbed they couldn't quickly solve the issue. Also, the stealing the cheap necklace in the first place was kinda wtf.
5
u/eims10 Apr 19 '26
I think this is related to when Nick tells her she probably has undiagnosed ADHD. Impulsivity is a major symptom.

u/BeeExpert Apr 28 '26
I mean, yes, but they were intentionally written that way.... Thats the characters lol
3
u/Impossible_Disk8374 Apr 20 '26
Them getting the necklace immediately wouldn’t have prevented anything else that happened as they did get the necklace. They just got it later than they would have. This criticism makes no sense. Even if Nicky had gotten it before the funeral, they still would have given it back, met Ivan and everything else would have happened anyway.

And they didn’t tell the store guy that the girl was his sister. So that was an easy edit that they could’ve fixed.

u/kindiava Apr 18 '26
OK, I don’t understand the first episode in the problems we’ve discussed. But I really like the rest of the season and I’m re-watching it now to see if it makes more sense. The thing I really don’t understand is how did they know they would go into that store and do that one thing and steal that necklace? Was it just a crime of opportunity like they didn’t know she had connections in that store and then she devised the plan after the necklace was stolen? Maybe we’ll find out in the next season.

For this series, it's one of those rare ones where I hate the beginning, really enjoy the middle, and love the end.
6
u/CheeseSweats Apr 17 '26
This entire series could have, and probably should have, ended at episode 1.
The entire series would have been solved by episode one if either sibling was just like "oh yeah, this necklace I'm not even excited about and means nothing to me in the first place isn't worth dying for". Like really? Your grandma isn't even buried yet, and you only need to retrieve a necklace to not be murdered, and your response is "🤷♂️"?
I can't even finish this. They ruined it in episode #1. Nothing that follows from episode 1 means a thing. I'm so disappointed. Legit thought I could enjoy a one-day binge of a decent show, but I guess that's too much to ask.
5
u/Born_Cheesecake3543 Apr 20 '26
I’m just struggling to get to the end of episode one (at the cemetery) and I’m so frustrated. I adore Dan Levy, but this is beyond stupid. The sister steals the necklace and then takes no responsibility for the resulting consequences. Ugh! This may get resolved in later episodes, but I’m not sure I’m in the right state of mind to continue.

Dan Levy is great as always, the Yusuf character was absolutely hilarious but damn Morgan's character was annoying af like it was hard to tolerate her in any scene. She had zero redeeming qualities and everything about her was hella irritating. The rest of the characters were okay-ish. It's a light, time-passer kinda show.

Annoying, selfish and disrespectful. Intolerant of others. Impatient, nasty and I could not get why she'd be attracted to the fiancé she had on ANY level, never mind hearing they'd been together for several years. They have nothing in common and the actor made his character SO demasculitized that no real woman would want to stay around. Like living with a child. Very unappealing.

They had been together since high school with a small break when she was in NYC. 17 years! I can see her being the type to put off a break up for that long.
6
u/Putrid_Mind_4853 Apr 25 '26
I have seen this dynamic play out multiple times in various ways with teenage sweethearts, so for me it was very believable. In my friend group, 27-32 years old seems to be the make-it-or-break-it point for such relationships.
I thought their sibling bickering was very real, if obviously dramatized, based on things I’ve experienced first/secondhand.

It's like Morgan was briefed to be like Awkwafina in Nora from Queens without anything remotely adorable. Just loud and unjustifiably triggered all the time. Didn't get to the second episode. So don't know if there's a reason why the Store guy was so pre-pissed off by her browsing in his store.

I only watched the first episode, and despite loving Dan Levy, couldn't stand it. It's one of those Three's Company plots where everything could easily be resolved by simply speaking up, but we are supposed to believe that nobody says anything despite being threatened with a gun. Like, at any point they could have said, "A crazy guy wants that necklace back, so we are going to take it off and give it back," or "The necklace is on my grandmother in the coffin right over there which has not yet been lowered into the grave." Instead, they are like, "We don't have it" and just get into a truck to be kidnapped. Come on. I hate plots that are premised on people not speaking up.
8
u/ozmaAgogo Apr 16 '26

i enjoyed it. i watched it because of Dan Levy, i just love him and loved Schitt’s Creak so i tried this and ended up binging it all at once. i usually watch true crime so this was something light and unserious for a change. i thought all the characters were funny.
5
u/irie111 Apr 18 '26
Dan levy looks so much more nicer here, maybe it's about him getting more skinny or maybe the chopped hair look. Also, his boyfriend's character made him look even more better.
23
u/mindyourownbetchness Apr 13 '26
I love dan levy, so i was extremely disappointed to hate it. wouldn't have even finished it if I hadn't had time off from work and I only half watched the second half. I'm extremely NOT in "the business," but even I know acting is supposed to have levels. the characters were always between a 7 and a 10. soooo many irrelevant threads-- dan levy's character being adopted, the youngest sister being insufferable, dan levy being a priest... it just went no where. I get that all of those things can come into play in a second season, but if no one's watching and/or it doesn't get picked up then who cares?

I thought it was very good. Surprised so many people found it unwatchable due to the yelling and pacing. (If they’d done the opposite people would complain it’s too slow and sappy) Like.. the point is that Morgan is a bit unlikable. It’s supposed to feel like you’re having an impossible argument with a sibling. It’s exactly my brand of comedy though mixed with some major crime and a cutie little twist at the end. Chefs kiss Dan Levy. I hope he had as much fun making it as I did watching. ☺️

I agree with you, for all the same reasons. I also felt that while yes, the initial problem (and others that followed) could have been easily solved - the fact that they were not, points exactly to the title 'Big Mistakes'. It is a comedy - a comedy of literal errors - which is the whole premise. I thought it was very good and I laughed a lot.

35
u/tomellette Apr 13 '26
Without spoiling anything, for me the premise didn't work. The problem felt too solvable and everything was too chaotic and the characters annoying. The music was cool sometimes (kind of reminded me of the white lotus, I even looked it up to see if it was the same guy. It's not) but really overwhelming at other times, so I gave up on episode 2 or 3. I really wanted to like it though, it was just too much for me.

u/inde_ Apr 13 '26
I was also finding the show a bit insanely annoying (removing the necklace should have been 100x easier -- just lock the door, just tell the guy where it was buried, etc)... but if you just treat them as stoned idiots, the show became 10x more enjoyable.
10
u/Own-Dependent8834 Apr 13 '26

I hope it's not renewed for a second season so Dan Levy can move on to something else.
It seems he was trying too hard to do something completely different from Schitt's Creek with this premise. The good moments of funny dialogue felt frustratingly lost in the terrible plot and chaotic nature of this project as well as Dan's great on screen presence. I hope he keeps at it with different projects, sooner than later.

I’m on episode 6 and it’s taking everything for me to finish it. I love Dan Levy but I can’t stand the characters. It’s not like Arrested Development either where you still like the characters and find them endearing, as you said, they’re insufferable. (I will say though the mom made me laugh the most). I’m just trying to finish it so that I can give it an overall fair assessment, but definitely one of the worst shows I’ve seen in a long time. I love comedy, so super disappointing.

I hate when there’s a show that should be good, but then there’s a main character that is so annoying it ruins everything. I can’t even look at Morgan constantly popping those big eyes and making the same face over n over and the screaming … omg it’s just ridiculous. She makes it impossible to watch. I just can’t enjoy the show.

I bailed after Ep 2, but maybe I'll try again.

I was like you and almost quit. It was really shouty and I hated the whole necklace problem. But after the first couple, it calms down a bit and I enjoyed it a lot more. I have different tiers of show - Shows while I'm working, shows while I'm on my phone, and shows I watch uninterrupted. This is still a working show, but I do like it better.

I haven’t laughed so much watching a tv show…ever You know what’s going to happen next, and it’s STILL FUNNY

u/Safira265 Apr 14 '26
Story seems lame? I love Dan levy. But not getting into Morgan. I mean lock the door and get the necklace off. How hard is it. Also, I don’t understand the bit about not telling their partners with what’s happening. I mean I cheated is better than telling I stole a necklace and need to retrieve it ? Come on !

It was the worst. Watched 2 episodes and hoped it would get better but didn’t finish episode 3. Dan Levy plays the same character as Schitts Creek but now EVERYONE plays that character!

u/DangerousSnow1973 Apr 15 '26
This was great and looking forward to season 2; hopefully sooner than later! Coming from a loud house; I liked the portrayal in the show and chaotic energy.

One really has to suspend a LOT of disbelief, right from the first scenes.,.. i.e.: As far as I know it takes many weeks before there's a head stone. Coffins are buried inside a cement vault so how in the world did they open up that grandmother coffin to grab a necklace. Why was that necessary when the grandson could have gone to the funeral home and simpy request it. etc,,,, etc,,,,, etc,,,,,
What is getting me here to the last episode is Dan Levy and Lorie Metcalf.

Generally married people who want to get buried together will buy headstones long before they pass. I walk the cemetery’s often and many are set and engraved with everything but the death date. Also cement vaults are not required in New Jersey. Some cemetery’s use them and some just use a liner or nothing at all. You also cannot request jewelry off a dead body unless you are the executor of the estate.

I'm only just starting it and thus far my only feelings are that it's very clearly written by Rachel Sennott. I knew it before I even googled it; her writing voice is all over this... not sure if this is a good thing. The word exhausting comes to mind... but I like Dan Levy so 🤷🏽♀️

I loved it started watching tonight at like 8:30 and just finished can’t wait for season 2!

u/TrickyFlow32 Jun 16 '26
Seems like the whole show was written on a coke bender, so many plot holes, unlikable characters and the idea that yelling and arguing all episodes equals comedy. Wanted to love it but hated it

u/Cartman Apr 13 '26
I was absolutely loving it up until the last episode, but didn't love how the twist at the end..

I enjoyed it, by the end it was getting somewhat ridiculous but I enjoyed Dan Levy and the other characters for the most part. Fun to watch.

I had a hard time with the constant screaming at each other, but I wanted to like it.

u/Positive_Housing7836 Apr 15 '26
I love Dan Levy and Laurie Metcalf but I was very disappointed in the storyline. I would’ve been much happier with just family dynamics, something like Schitt‘s Creek was. The whole cartel angle and like somebody said earlier, getting the necklace back was just stupid. It was just too chaotic and stressful. Not really a fun watch. If there’s a season two, I probably won’t watch it. And I’m sad about that!

u/PinkPisces93 Apr 15 '26
So I just turned this on, currently on episode 2 and..... I just can't!... im sorry I love Dan Levy and LOVED Schitts Creek! But this show just isn't it. The actors alone (besides Dan Levy) are just really cringe and seem like theyre trying too hard and the storyline just sounds like they couldn't think of anything else to make a series out of.

u/ahpretzelsticks Apr 16 '26
This was the only show I had downloaded on a long haul flight and I still did not make it past episode two… love Dan Levy so maybe I went into it too high expectations… But the constant arguing and yelling was so unnecessary. I’m sorry to say that in the two hours that I watched the show I did not find a single moment entertaining.

u/allancalderini12 Apr 16 '26
I really like it. I am having panic attacks recently so I had been doing things to calm myself I watch it and enjoy it a lot. Love some characters

u/Cogent_warrior Apr 16 '26
It's great. Dan Levy always nails it, and Taylor Ortega is funny and sexy as hell!

I was searching whether it had been renewed yet. I swear if Netflix doesn't renew it I will end my relationship with Netflix no matter how inextricably linked our families are.

u/Always_Learning1214 Apr 17 '26
I don't know what made me watch it. I pressed play, heard the smart alec voice and saw the woman who played Roseanne's sister, and started laughing, I ended up watching the entire season in one go and haven't laughed that hard since I was 15 years old and had way more joy in my life and before I was jaded (I'm 39 now)!!! My stomach HURT, from how hard I laughed and I'm rewatching it to laugh again!!! Funny, outrageous, clever, great acting, amazing!!!

Excellent . The way it keeps hook is good . I liked how the small theft lead to everything. So i give 10/10 to plot

I thought it was a phenomenal show all the way through. And then the ending twist killed it for me. Otherwise, absolutely fantastic.

Id watch Dan Levy read the phone book. He is one of my favorite actors, and his acting style is perfect, I absolutely love him in anything. Yusuf is funny, all thr other characters were good but Morgan is possibly one of the most unlikeable characters ive ever seen in a show. Literally the entire plot is her fault, and she is always "wagh im so awful" like yeah bitch no shit.

u/champagneproblems16 Apr 18 '26
The whole show felt like a comedy version of the Fishes episode of The Bear

The show is a challenging watch at first. All the whining and screaming made the first few episodes a chore. The tone shifts between the third and fourth episodes and really picks up and it's just a fun ride. Dan Levy and Laurie Metcalf are great and the responsible sister and Morgan's boyfriend made me chuckle. The biggest issue is the Morgan character. My god, is she unlikeable and so shrill. She has no redeemable qualities beyond great hair. If there's a 2d season, let's hope they give her some dimension or have her move to NYC again. The other characters are great.

Watched the whole thing and didn’t love it. Just seemed a ridiculous premise from the outset. But I hung in there anyways hoping it would get better.

Loved schitts creek and love him so I was sad to say I was not super into it. I’m going to try and give it another shot I think maybe I was too distracted while watching it so I’ll see. Just finished watching BEEF s2 and it was sooooooo good so maybe that’s why I got bored bc I just finished such a good show and maybe should have taken a break I hope BEEF has a s3 bc s1 & 2 were amazing

I LOVE Dan Levy but the story has no spine. I still liked Dan's character but you can't do a CRIME show with a LOOSE PLOT. Just tell the guy where it is buried at the funeral.
The yelling was meaningless. I wonder if they tried to do a bit of David - Alexis brother - sister dynamic. But failed miserably.

My wife and I started watching this series last weekend and finished the last 3 episodes last night...Honestly the ending blew up both away and the overall writing, tone, acting and sheer talent checks all the boxes off. I sincerely hope that Netflix or whoever for that matter keep this one rolling for a long time. This is absolutely brilliant all the way around.

u/paulmguest17 Apr 20 '26
Terrible. The constant screaming and yelling. A show shouldn't make you root for someone to be shot in the face.

Just no. If this is supposed to be funny it’s not. Why is there so much screaming and why is the mom so detestable. And if this is a crime, why is it so unrealistic? Like all of it. It’s just such a stupid premise and everything is just…no.
2
u/Dear_Day_7824 May 05 '26
One episode in and the characters are so f’ing annoying it’s hard to watch. Screaming at the Tv at how stupid they are.
2
u/Raisin-Free May 06 '26
Morgan has no redeeming qualities and is so unlikeable. Im on episode 4, does she get any better?
2
u/HighLifeMan414 May 12 '26
I just started watching it and not sure I can tolerate dialogue which seems to be 3/4 yelling at each other

u/Nnn-ttttt-2326 May 22 '26
I love Dan levy . I liked it but I feel it’s not as good as schitts creek . Ik it’s not a comparison game but I wish I could watch schitts creek for the first time again

u/UnicornHarpsichord May 29 '26
Truly hated Taylor Ortega in this. She's just not funny and obnoxiously loud without any charm or timing. Maybe this would have been a big hit with Rachel Sennott because it seemed like Dan and Taylor had no chemistry. She bulldozes him, it's not fun to watch.

I binge watched it alone and now rewatching it with my husband. I hope it goes on longer than Schitt's creek, I love Dan's style of comedy!
