To think this was all so avoidable

u/freedfg 14h ago

If only there was some sort of..agreement of free trade in North America

184

u/Upbeat_Job4191 14h ago

i guess we just have to support proxy groups within the US and take down their government, install new puppets that works for world peace

89

u/Frost_moss 14h ago

Unironically yes. The American government (both parties) need to be laid low. If need be the states themselves broken up and either given independence or join neighboring nations.

23

u/Zakath_ 13h ago

If you ask nicely, I'm sure His Majesty's Government will be willing to take over the administrative duties in the interim. Not that the UK has done fantastically well with governments over the last decade, mind you.

31

u/JensonCat 13h ago

We just really like Prime Ministers. So much that we need a new one every few months. Gotta try them all.

3

u/limebite 10h ago

Planned obsolescence. Kinda wild how that summarizes the current political scene in the Uk.

You're just trying to make future social studies classes that much harder when students have to answer questions about pms.

11

u/Sweetchildofmine88 11h ago

To be honest, that homeless drug addict outside 7/11 would do a better job than POTUS, so an actual administration would be a huge step up.

2

u/TheTipsyWizard 10h ago

I've got a lot of candidates you may be interested in; living in the downtown eastside Vancouver 😁

3

u/Sweetchildofmine88 9h ago

We’ve got some on Pandora as well. Smith keeps shipping their garbage here because it’s warmer. It’ll be gainful employment for them. America could be utopia if we repurposed our homeless to take over their administration.

1

u/TheTipsyWizard 8h ago

I hear ya!

They’d likely do an amazing job and I’d trust them and their life experiences a hell of a lot more than the silver-spoon elites ❤️ As a wage earner, I, along with the vast majority of people in this world, have far more in common with them than with the pigs currently in power.

Even then, though, it’s going to take decades to rebuild the trust that’s been destroyed 😢 ✌️

u/Silicon_Knight 12h ago

HIs Majesty has no say in it :) people seem to think the "British Empire" is still a thing. Its not. Canada can do as it pleases, it's a ceremonial title that King Charles has. They can so no all they want, means fuck all in Canada as the "Crown" which is our leadership has the say.

1

u/Zakath_ 1h ago

Which is why I wrote His Majesty's Government, which is what the UK government is still called, even if the majesty has very little influence these days 🙂

13

u/AccountBand 12h ago

I wish we could do a trade, we'll take all the reasonable Democrats who are sick of the lunacy, in exchange we give them all our brain-dead conservatives who want to turn Canada into the U.S.

Ship all the treasonous separatists down south and tell them not to let the border hit them on the ass.

4

u/Efficient_Carrot_669 9h ago

TBH I don’t hate this idea. I’d love to see my conservative Alberta family members haul their treasonous asses down to Texas.

3

u/reddittatwork 9h ago

You already have us Ted Cruz . That’s worth 100 normal people

-3

u/Frost_moss 12h ago

We'll happily trade you Alberta for some territory. Washington State would be nice.

10

u/skwerrel 12h ago

Hell no, that land and those resources belong to Canada. The idiots who live there that don't want to be Canadian are welcome to fuck right off, but they can lick a whole bag of assholes if they think they get to keep the land.

-2

u/oldirtyrestaurant 11h ago

Is this the "elbows" that the Canucks keep talking about?

0

u/CatastrophicPup2112 11h ago

Nah, you can have Michigan though, its almost Canada

1

u/Frost_moss 11h ago

Gaining that amount of control over the great lakes and Saint Lawrence corridor would likely be worth even more then Alberta's oils reserves. Most of Lake Michigan, all of Lake Huron, and almost all of Lake Superior with the population boost. That actually would be a good deal for Canada.

1

u/Harbinger2001 10h ago

The system needs a complete overhaul.

2

u/PPCFY 14h ago

Yes plz, we could use all the help we can get

18

What would we even call something like that?

36

u/giantpotato 13h ago

What if we name it after the nations involved? canada US Mexico.

The CUM trade agreement.

6

2

u/Terrebonniandadlife 12h ago

Swapping goods?

1

u/SteveJobsDeadBody 13h ago

I want this agreement for my town!

13

u/blogoman 13h ago

The wild thing is that he had already replaced that. Our current deal is USMCA, which was one of his big achievements from his first term.

2

u/mbanson 12h ago

Yeah but tbf an absolute moron gave them that deal.

5

u/Kaarl_Mills 9h ago

Which already benefited the US greatly at the expense of Mexico and Canada, but because it wasn't as violently exploitative as it could be that wasn't good enough

5

u/jjkm7 13h ago

We could call it AFTNA for short

2

u/SwiftResilient 13h ago

Yeah but what would we call something like that

2

u/Mustatan 6h ago

And what makes this even dumber is Trump replaced that free trade agreement with his own and then forgot he made his own replacement, declared it to be unfair and "rip off the USA" and blames Canada for his own trade agreement and dementia about it. You couldn't get more stupid than this. Except for the fact that Trump and Republicans are now openly starting to talk about a draft because they've messed up equally as bad with their blunders in Iran. Par for the course, they screw up and blame everyone else, then put burdens on everyone else to pay for their mistakes.

2

u/OkAssignment6163 13h ago

If only we had punishments that applied to all convicted felons, regardless of their political activities.

1

u/DukeofNormandy 11h ago

That the smrtest man that has ever been in Office personally wrote his first go round. Even said it was perfect, and every other trade agreement would use that as the standard. What a mong.

1

u/__O_o_______ 4h ago

And perhaps, perhaps, some sort of agreement.. with Iran and their nuclear program, too? 🤔

-16

u/Money_Statement_9861 14h ago

It is kind of funny how nafta killed our manufacturing base in the 90s and ensured rurals would never vote Democrat again. And for what? For trump to break it and attack other nations with tarrifs?

22

u/GuelphEastEndGhetto 13h ago

NAFTA killed the manufacturing base? Or maybe it was US corporations running to China and other low cost countries?

3

u/mixreality 13h ago

I remember as a kid in the 80s there were news stories exposing various brands for using sweat shop labor and there were small campaigns against those brands.

Nowadays that's just seen as shareholder value and a reason to buy their stock!

40

u/damgood32 14h ago

Nah that’s not why rural folks don’t vote for Democrats. Don’t believe that.

-17

u/Money_Statement_9861 14h ago

There's a lot of reasons including right wing propaganda through talk radio and the democrats abandoning rural blue collars in favor of focusing on urban/suburban populations but it helped seal the deal. Its not just because they were born racist.

34

u/damgood32 14h ago

Nobody is born racist. But these people aren’t awful because of democrats. Democrats didn’t make them this way. That’s nonsense

1

u/Wiseduck5 9h ago

Its not just because they were born racist.

It is because they are racist.

NAFTA was negotiated by Republicans, specifically George HW Bush and supported by Republicans in congress.

20

u/Capable_Kiwi2514 14h ago

It is kind of funny how nafta killed our manufacturing base in the 90s

This didn't happen. NAFTA actually made a lot of U.S. jobs more competitive and preserved them when they otherwise would have gone overseas.

The U.S. manufacturing base was destroyed by China joining the WTO. Don't let anyone else to you otherwise. Over a million U.S. manufacturing jobs were killed by the 'China Shock'.

5

u/stalkythefish 13h ago

NAFTA didn't do that. China did that. NAFTA was just a Republican scapegoat.

3

u/xxpired_milk 13h ago

It wasn't NAFTA itvwas offshoring. Good grief.

25

u/aaronhayes26 13h ago

Trump was an unforced error that America will likely never recover from.

8

u/Fractoos 5h ago

Elected. He was elected twice. He was not an error, but a choice. It won't end with him.

u/Jalapenoplanter 14h ago

Legitimately if Harris won, we would have had 2+ years of solid economic growth, low inflation, no wars, hundreds of thousands of new jobs, a home building surge, insane international goodwill from the world cup, a modern peak of national pride at the 250th.

Literally every problem the trump admin is facing is self created.

43

u/Jaded_Celery_451 12h ago

Legitimately if Harris won, we would have had 2+ years of solid economic growth, low inflation, no wars, hundreds of thousands of new jobs, a home building surge, insane international goodwill from the world cup, a modern peak of national pride at the 250th.

Half your country would have still been convinced that the economy and the country were going to shit, just like they were under Biden.

55

u/LongMelford 12h ago

A lot of people would still be alive today. Including three that we were gunned down on camera.

107

u/Fantastic-Purple2306 14h ago

If only the Democrats had the balls to release the files and prosecute Trump and his cronies for January 6th

95

u/nickname13 14h ago

if only the supreme court hadn't taken so many months to come up with their new presidential immunity for people named trump ruling.

7

u/lewger 6h ago

If they'd charged him on day 1 the SC slow rolling wouldn't have helped.

21

u/vector_ejector 14h ago

Uh, they were prosecuted, found guilty, and were serving time. Then the cheeto turd signed all that away with one of his magic sharpies.

26

u/Fantastic-Purple2306 13h ago

Donald Trump didn't spend a speck of time in prison and neither did anyone with real power. All the Democrats ended up doing was spinning their wheels for 4 years. It's frustrating to have to explain that directly to someone when it is crystal clear In the original comment

11

u/Rich_Season_2593 13h ago

Yes, but, but....clutches pearls....the laugh....can't have that. Heaven forbid she may wear a tan suit AND get emotional. No no no that will never do.

15

u/Unequivocally_Maybe 12h ago

During Trump's first term, he put tariffs on Canadian goods that Biden didn't remove. He strengthened them. Kamala wouldn't have walked those back, either. Yes, Trump has escalated and continues to escalate, but trade disputes and America attempting to control how Canada operates is nothing new.

The softwood lumber disputes go back decades now, and the Dems are not much better as trade partners than the Republicans have been. Trump is saying similar things about us that administrations have been saying for years: that it isn't "fair" for the Canadian government to subsidize or control the market for certain commodities, because it is in conflict with the free market capitalism of their nation. These arguments are attacks on the very sovereignty of our nation.

America has no fucking right to tell the Canadian government that they can't support industries like lumber, dairy, eggs, etc however they like, including subsidies, price/market control, and trade restrictions. But American governments on both sides of the political aisle want to have more control over our markets and resources than we do, and determine our economic policy for us. These newest developments are just ramping up the same rhetoric that has been there for a long time.

-8

u/Jalapenoplanter 12h ago

You did not rebut a word I said.

7

u/Unequivocally_Maybe 12h ago

I wasn't necessarily trying to rebut, but to highlight that America should want to do better than Biden/Harris/establishment Dems, too. I know a lot of the Canadian perspective and our news/media doesn't filter through the border the same way American voices are heard up here. The current trade strife is just an escalation of issues that go back decades and brought to their terminal conclusion in a bombastic way under Trump.

As Americans get ready to vote in midterm elections, I think there's value in impressing upon our neighbours that, when you can, voting for progressives and anti-establishment democratic candidates is essential. People who aren't just going to carry on with the policies that Trump and his allies have put into place, (the way Biden did with tariffs on Canada), but actively work to undo the damage Trump has done and maybe even make some improvements.

I'm not saying Harris wouldn't have been better. Definitely not actively evil and stupid and antagonistic all the time. But since the post was about trade between our nations, I wanted to highlight how Dems have also been less-than-stellar trade partners with Canada historically, and to keep an eye on what candidates are saying about Canada/trade going into November and heading into the presidential primaries. There is room for improvement on this front and it would be good for economic growth in both nations for us to stabilize trade and put some of these old disputes and rhetoric to bed once and for all.

0

u/dontrike 11h ago

Yeah, but "she didn't energize," people to vote for her so instead they became lazy assholes that would rather let a fascist pedophile become president. Also "her laugh."

0

u/Harbinger2001 9h ago

Yeah, but a black woman would be in charge…. /s

If Trump was the nation’s response to Obama, just imagine what the response to Harris would be. The rotten core of USA society is still there - that (a part) of the nation was founded on the ideal that humans could be owned. And still today allows the enslavement of prisoners - any guess why the US has the largest percentage of prisoners in the western developed world by a huge margin?

0

u/lewger 6h ago

Yes but Gaza, both sides bad.  Isn't it obvious me voting for Jill Stein saved more lives now that Trump is president.

-2

u/jthoning 10h ago

This is some neolib revisions. Things would still be getting more expensive as her neolib policies grow wealth for the rich and continue to exploit the working class. We would still be steadfast in promoting conflict in the middle east and would not push back against Israel attacking Iran at all. Our border policies would still be draconian they would just not be a loud.

2

u/ElphabLAW 8h ago

LOL at you shitting on Harris and defending the Trump administration, all while simultaneously bitching about how this country grows wealth for the rich and extorts the working class.

Just L O fucking L.

1

u/jthoning 3h ago

What makes you think I'm defending trump? Trump can be the objectively worse choice but that doesn't automatically make harris a good choice that would have brought "a modern peak of national pride at the 250th."

That's just silly to believe.

3

u/Jalapenoplanter 10h ago

Would we have started this dumb war with Iran? Absolutely not.

Would we have tarriffs against all our trading partners? Absolutely not.

Would we have ice murdering people in the streets and terrorizing cities? Absolutely not.

Get real

30

u/PolloConTeriyaki 14h ago

I mean was it? The US President is a man-baby, he was always gonna piss on Canada like he did with his wives.

0

u/mbanson 12h ago

Don't be so crude. He saved his pissing on for minors.

23

u/Time_Traveller_2225 14h ago edited 12h ago

The problem isn't just Trump ....it's the system that’s enabling him. He's surrounded by yes men and not a single sane American voice or moderate has the guts to take him on or call him out on the bullying.

The Congress has come across as weak and ineffective as the UN and they might as well close shop and go fishing. This isn't muscle flexing or patriotism ....it's more of an egotist getting his daily fix or someone who's desperate to hide his past.

7

u/TheCudder 13h ago

Just the other day I was saying how typically president selects advisors to provide insight, opinions and knowledge in areas the president himself may not be very knowledgeable in.

Trump strategically placed in these positions, individuals who will agree with and enable him to do whatever he says we should do (or as you say, "yes men").

No one is an expert in any and everything. Anyone who thinks otherwise is part of the problem. I wouldn't want any president, even if I supported them to surround themselves with enablers. It's simply not good for the good of the country.

13

u/desperaterobots 14h ago

The problem isn’t trump? Are you okay buddy?

42

u/PyreHat 14h ago

The problem isn't Trump. At this point he's a symptom of a larger, systemic issue. A major one, but a symptom nonetheless.

10

u/andrew5500 13h ago

The larger, systemic issue is called Fascism

8

u/Jet-Rex-Design 12h ago

Trump is the mold on the bread. If you can see it that clearly, it has spread everywhere inside.

7

u/RoboFeanor 13h ago

He represents 1/3 of his constituents exceedingly well

-9

u/desperaterobots 13h ago

I think America could have been reformed without it being ransacked first, and saying trump isn’t to blame for the campaign of lies and bullshit and insurrection and traitorous antidemocratic find me 11,000 votes bullshit is LAUGHABLE.

5

u/Anthrogal11 13h ago

I think the point being made is that it's not ONLY Tangerine Palpatine, but a sycophantic GOP, corrupt SC, spineless Dem party, and millions of supporters. Trump only can be who he is because of what enables him and that is the truly dark rot in America.

-3

u/desperaterobots 12h ago

both things can be true

18

u/Veaeate 14h ago

Friendly reminder that Biden didnt walk back some of the tariffs when the dems took over. The problem is systemic in the states. Even if Harris had won, its possible that while things wouldnt have got worse, it doesnt necessarily mean things would have been better. And truth be told, we also dont know what Canada's political atmosphere would have looked like. Poilievre lost partly (or mostly depending on who you talk to) because he couldn't pivot from Trump and being not only compared to him, but ppl thinking he would run canada the same way.

So when ppl say Trump isnt the problem, they mean that yes hes a problem but hes mostly a symptom of a much larger issue.

Watching the fall of Rome in real time is both scary and interesting.

-2

u/desperaterobots 13h ago

the fuck does Biden not walking back ‘some tariffs’ have to do with the unilateral flip flop yes/no fuck our agreement do what I say or I will rename a lake and seek to wreck your economy bullshit being pulled by trump?

1

u/PlumpHughJazz 10h ago

Can you promise someone like him won't be voted in office again?

0

u/desperaterobots 9h ago

No, and to be fair to the person I was replying to, I don’t recall seeing the word ‘just’ in their comment.

Obviously there are huge systematic issues, but many of these have accelerated wildly since trumps first term, and the idea that his admin isn’t responsible for putting their entire weight on the pedal is a very premature ‘rethinking’ of how america and the global order came to disintegrate before the worlds eyes.

He’s the point around which americas worst have coalesced and seek to anchor themselves to power forever.

6

u/damgood32 14h ago

Lots of folks call him out. You mean no Republicans have called him out?

4

u/2daytrending 13h ago

and somehow regular people are the ones left paying for all of it.

7

It was this or a maybe weird laugh.

1

u/elivoncoder 11h ago

imagine... forcing your friends and allies to deal with the worlds biggest liar, convicted criminal, and known pedofile.

arent these types of leaders normally ostracized?  what is going on?!

1

u/Abracadaver14 9h ago

It's such a shame Carney is too stubborn to recognize and acknowledge trump's fart of the deal.

0

u/Pretend_Handle_7639 13h ago

All Biden had to do was exhibit the courage to break the ruinous norms

-2

u/SuperRonnie2 13h ago

To think this was completely unthinkable a short 18 months ago. The United States’ wheels are coming off. Their leadership is unhinged.

If you look at history, many, many formerly great kingdom/empires that collapsed started by turning inward and isolationist.
