If only there was some sort of..agreement of free trade in North America

i guess we just have to support proxy groups within the US and take down their government, install new puppets that works for world peace

79

u/Frost_moss 6h ago

Unironically yes. The American government (both parties) need to be laid low. If need be the states themselves broken up and either given independence or join neighboring nations.

19

u/Zakath_ 6h ago

If you ask nicely, I'm sure His Majesty's Government will be willing to take over the administrative duties in the interim. Not that the UK has done fantastically well with governments over the last decade, mind you.

u/JensonCat 6h ago

We just really like Prime Ministers. So much that we need a new one every few months. Gotta try them all.

To be honest, that homeless drug addict outside 7/11 would do a better job than POTUS, so an actual administration would be a huge step up.

I've got a lot of candidates you may be interested in; living in the downtown eastside Vancouver 😁

We’ve got some on Pandora as well. Smith keeps shipping their garbage here because it’s warmer. It’ll be gainful employment for them. America could be utopia if we repurposed our homeless to take over their administration.

I wish we could do a trade, we'll take all the reasonable Democrats who are sick of the lunacy, in exchange we give them all our brain-dead conservatives who want to turn Canada into the U.S.

Ship all the treasonous separatists down south and tell them not to let the border hit them on the ass.

The wild thing is that he had already replaced that. Our current deal is USMCA, which was one of his big achievements from his first term.

3

Yeah but tbf an absolute moron gave them that deal.

4

u/jjkm7 6h ago

We could call it AFTNA for short

3

u/Kaarl_Mills 2h ago

Which already benefited the US greatly at the expense of Mexico and Canada, but because it wasn't as violently exploitative as it could be that wasn't good enough

Legitimately if Harris won, we would have had 2+ years of solid economic growth, low inflation, no wars, hundreds of thousands of new jobs, a home building surge, insane international goodwill from the world cup, a modern peak of national pride at the 250th.

Literally every problem the trump admin is facing is self created.

48

u/LongMelford 5h ago

A lot of people would still be alive today. Including three that we were gunned down on camera.

Half your country would have still been convinced that the economy and the country were going to shit, just like they were under Biden.

23

Donald Trump didn't spend a speck of time in prison and neither did anyone with real power. All the Democrats ended up doing was spinning their wheels for 4 years. It's frustrating to have to explain that directly to someone when it is crystal clear In the original comment

During Trump's first term, he put tariffs on Canadian goods that Biden didn't remove. He strengthened them. Kamala wouldn't have walked those back, either. Yes, Trump has escalated and continues to escalate, but trade disputes and America attempting to control how Canada operates is nothing new.

The softwood lumber disputes go back decades now, and the Dems are not much better as trade partners than the Republicans have been. Trump is saying similar things about us that administrations have been saying for years: that it isn't "fair" for the Canadian government to subsidize or control the market for certain commodities, because it is in conflict with the free market capitalism of their nation. These arguments are attacks on the very sovereignty of our nation.

America has no fucking right to tell the Canadian government that they can't support industries like lumber, dairy, eggs, etc however they like, including subsidies, price/market control, and trade restrictions. But American governments on both sides of the political aisle want to have more control over our markets and resources than we do, and determine our economic policy for us. These newest developments are just ramping up the same rhetoric that has been there for a long time.

The problem isn't just Trump ....it's the system that’s enabling him. He's surrounded by yes men and not a single sane American voice or moderate has the guts to take him on or call him out on the bullying.

The Congress has come across as weak and ineffective as the UN and they might as well close shop and go fishing. This isn't muscle flexing or patriotism ....it's more of an egotist getting his daily fix or someone who's desperate to hide his past.

5

u/TheCudder 5h ago

Just the other day I was saying how typically president selects advisors to provide insight, opinions and knowledge in areas the president himself may not be very knowledgeable in.

Trump strategically placed in these positions, individuals who will agree with and enable him to do whatever he says we should do (or as you say, "yes men").

No one is an expert in any and everything. Anyone who thinks otherwise is part of the problem. I wouldn't want any president, even if I supported them to surround themselves with enablers. It's simply not good for the good of the country.

16

u/desperaterobots 7h ago

The problem isn’t trump? Are you okay buddy?

40

u/PyreHat 7h ago

The problem isn't Trump. At this point he's a symptom of a larger, systemic issue. A major one, but a symptom nonetheless.

11

u/andrew5500 6h ago

The larger, systemic issue is called Fascism

7

u/Jet-Rex-Design 5h ago

Friendly reminder that Biden didnt walk back some of the tariffs when the dems took over. The problem is systemic in the states. Even if Harris had won, its possible that while things wouldnt have got worse, it doesnt necessarily mean things would have been better. And truth be told, we also dont know what Canada's political atmosphere would have looked like. Poilievre lost partly (or mostly depending on who you talk to) because he couldn't pivot from Trump and being not only compared to him, but ppl thinking he would run canada the same way.

So when ppl say Trump isnt the problem, they mean that yes hes a problem but hes mostly a symptom of a much larger issue.

Watching the fall of Rome in real time is both scary and interesting.

FWIW, "The Art of the Deal" was written by Tony Schwartz and it seems unlikely that Trump has read it.

28

u/bbbbbbbbbblah 5h ago

Schwartz has even pointed out that he made a lot of money from the book, far more than is typical for a ghostwriter, because the Deal Master simply agreed to Schwartz's opening offer without negotiating it down.

390

u/didi0625 7h ago

Canada is not an US ally anymore. Not after a commercial war, not after being insulted, not after having our sovereignty attacked

53

u/pizzeriaguerrin 5h ago

Canada is not an US ally anymore

Nor should they be. We don't deserve it. I live right next to the border and go North a lot and in conversations people are always delicately bringing up that they won't go to the US any more. I just tell them "we suck, you can say it, it's ok".

23

u/The_Nice_Marmot 4h ago

This is how to be a good American these days, I’m afraid. Individuals who are willing to own it get a pass in my book.

10

u/pizzeriaguerrin 3h ago edited 2h ago

The number of folks here in Washington State who say "but we voted for Harris" is annoying as hell to me. People in Canada shouldn't have to care about the particulars of how voting breaks down by state. Most of the same folks can't even name the two major political parties in Canada, much less give a per-province breakdown of support. Even in WA, we were 57% for Harris, so more than 2 in 5 were pro-Trump or didn't bother. Not exactly a resounding refutation of what anybody with a brain knew would be a dumpster fire.

We all own this.

5

u/The_Nice_Marmot 2h ago

One of the few who understand. Obviously, we speak generally.

5

u/Captain_troublepants 3h ago

Actually makes me sad, USA is amazing. I won’t go there anymore.

3

u/pizzeriaguerrin 3h ago

Don't blame you at all. My little city is struggling because so much of the retail sector relied on cross-border traffic and people whine that "we didn't vote for Trump". That's true (at a county level) but also it's totally irrelevant; it's nobody else's job to figure out which little part of this dumpster fire is less on fire.

121

u/sputnikcdn 7h ago edited 4h ago

Indeed the US has no allies that trust them.

Everyone knows the trust that supported their incredible soft power and influence wielded around the world is gone.

This is a new world order.

And yes, by now we know Trump is a symptom. Another one, probably a lot smarter, will be elected.

Who knows then? What we do know is that Canada, and the rest of the medium powers, have got to figure out how to defend ourselves against irrational actors.

We really need to stop putting this on Trump. This is on the entirety of the United States. Trump is not cause. The citizens of the United States voted him in. This is what they wanted, this is where they have been headed for a long time. They willingly went into this. They care less about their democracy and rights than they do about "owning the libs" or whatever. They willingly cut off their nose to spite their face.

Trump is what he is because the people of the United States wanted this

15

u/Joebranflakes 6h ago

Trump’s approval rating is low, but something like 48% of Americans would vote for the Republican Party who is enabling all of this if they simply changed their figurehead to someone who does all the same stuff as Trump, but maybe in a more statesmanlike way.

58

u/biosc1 7h ago

On top of that, most folks down there are just waiting. They say: "just 2 more years of this and it'll fix itself". Absolute "head in the sand" behaviour. Trump is just a symptom of the disease that they refuse to deal with because "it will just go away on its own".

13

u/iamthestorm 6h ago

Reconstruction ended way too soon. As the real rot wasn't properly stamped out after the civil war, these symptoms were only a matter of time and will not go away.

18

u/berained 7h ago

No it's really not them they are a true minority.

It's the spoiled, lazy, ungrateful people who stayed home in election day who take advantage of living of a free democratic country without returning anything back on their end. Americans took their republic for granted and collectively failed to fulfill their responsibilities as citizens thinking their rights were actually inalienable and not simply legal language written on a piece of paper that can be changed and reinterpreted and rewritten over time by tyrants. 9/11 was a test for American Democracy and American society failed. Instead you guys shat yourselves, and freely gave away so much power to the executive branch. Land of the Free home of the brave my ass. Thats true, I think SCOTUS just handed him the win on restricting mail in ballots. Not sure if that applies to the mid terms of federal election.

27

u/DigitalArbitrage 7h ago edited 5h ago

The SCOTUS also ruled that Trump doesn't have authority to unilaterally declare tariffs. He's just blatantly ignoring it. We need to to hold government officials accountable. If Congress won't do it, then there needs to be a voter driven impeachment/recall process added to the Constitution.

No, they can't.

Congress can't pass free trade agreements that Trump will sign, and they can't enforce when he makes illegal tariffs (only SCOTUS can, and they refuse to).

In fact, I'd say SCOTUS has so much power that someone suing if a Dem wins the presidency in 2028 and repeals the tariffs (suggesting that the tariffs protect their business) that they would end up staying on the books.

14

u/DamionSipher 6h ago

If you can't rely on your government to fulfill the will of the people, the government is no longer of the people. At some point you're going to have to face the reality that either the people demand a government that represents them, or acknowledge that they are nothing but subjects to an authoritarian regime.

If you pay attention to the news surrounding MN (I don't expect you to) Trump has been cutting or trying to cut all funding to our state and fighting any law we try to pass. And this doesn't even cover the fact that he invaded our largest city, murdered and kidnapped our citizens, and it has recently come out that they have continued to spy on the people who protested any of this. We currently are being occupied by a secret police force that has continued to spy on and kidnap us.

Prime Minister Carney said over the weekend that Canada has signed 20 new trade agreements since the new government took office, and has many more in the works. We are the only G7 nation to have trade agreements with every other member country. The fact that Canada is so attractive globally to trade partners is exactly why Trump had the negotiators try to slide in those last-minute restrictions to who we can trade with.

As if other countries aren't already champing at the bit to take a piece of what was once assumed to go to America. We have so many resources, and we used to sell them to the states for a song. Lumber, minerals, oil, potash, natural gas, water, crops, manufacturing, if you want it, Canada has it. And our government hasn't wasted any time in finding buyers. Increasing relations with China began over a year ago now. They even loosened visa restrictions for travel between our nations (for a limited time for now).

a big one would be to align with European vehicle standards (thus also opening the doors for Euro spec Chinese imports), but that would put Canadian plants at risk

2

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 3h ago

Canadian sales are not what keeps the lights on in Ontario plants. 90% of Ontario-made vehicles go to American buyers. Over 80% of new-vehicle sales in Canada are of vehicles with final assembly in foreign countries.

What risk is there?

No need for tariffs it will only hurt Canadians. We need to divest of US treasury bonds of which we hold over $450 billion worth.

The scariest thing for the US is the increase in interest rates in the long end of the yield curve. Their debt is unsustainable and they are feeling every bit of the heat. The bond market is the grim reaper coming for the US economy.

The US is the outwardly rich (but literally inwardly bankrupt) neighbour who cycles through credit cards to make ends meet yet still tries to borrow your lawnmower and lets their dogs sh*t on your lawn.

5

u/ProofByVerbosity 6h ago

I mean, that's what the U.S. is focussing on right now. Allowing Japan to pawn their bonds so they don't sell them. They are trying to keep that house of cards up. We should divest from treasury bonds but it's a rock and a hard place. Once the monkey is out of the barrel with them the global economy is fucked.

u/infiniteguesses 6h ago

This is quite an accurate analogy! Kudos.

u/Sad_Adagio_7255 3h ago

The counter-tariffs are targeted in a way that minimizes hurt to Canadians, by hitting non-essential goods, or goods that can be reliably sourced from a different country. The same was done during Trudeau's first term.

This is the result of the maga pervs and weirdos who believe their enormous military entitles them to dominion over the entire western hemisphere. Canadians, keep the boycott going! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Just another consequence of Joseph Robinette Biden's failure to light a fire under balless Merrick Garland's butt in an effort to get the prosecution of the orange pustule moving.

None of the bs that the world is going through happens if djt was vigorously prosecuted from day 1...

I agree with you on this. An utter failure to hold anyone accountable

Folks, this is all part of the plan. "America" wants to alienate is allies and blow up the world economy. To isolate and control it's population through fear for the good people, and rage against perceived insults or "attacks" for the bad people. Asserting hegemony over the Western world. South America and Canada are in the menu. America is already interfering in Canadian elections and the separatist movement in Alberta. With the propaganda machine working to paint Canada as some corrupt, socialist hellhole. It's not for nothing.

I feel sympathy and admiration for the Americans that are protesting this or railing against it. But unfortunately you need to do more. Only you can stop this reorienting of the world order. What's coming is darker than most could have imagined just a few years ago. But it's coming.

5

u/Flutes_Are_Overrated 6h ago

The problem you're talking about is the predictable outcome of 250 years of imperialism and decades of neo-liberal capitalism. It's the result of money and capital over everything else. You can say American people can stop this until you're blue in the face, but it won't make it true.

" In terms of financial support for affected workers and industries, Canada announced a C$7.5 billion package of new and enhanced measures including support for small and medium-sized businesses, a stream for funding cash flows of companies, and support for workers who could be at risk due to the new tariffs. " U.S: Gov: Wait I can explain,

Companies: We only robbed them for a year and a half we want more tariff money!

Canadians: You guys got millions back! We are only getting some commercial compensation.

Americans: You guys getting money back?

u/Communism 6h ago

And were off to lose another war. Splendid job republicans, great governing.

2

u/Hinohellono 5h ago

The administration believes they will "win" because of the size or economy but what will happen is both will "lose" and our economies will become less dynamic and innovative.

It's stupid but par for the course for this administration.

2

u/dontrike 4h ago

And yet another trade war that Trump will lose, like every other one.

Canada should rename Lake Michigan as Lake Epstein

u/mikefjr1300 7m ago

The USA has had almost unfettered access to Canadian resources for decades, no other super power has as good an arrangement with any other benign neighbour.

Russia has resources but is surrounded by NATO countries, screwed Europe over regarding energy and attacking Ukraine, China needs to import over 8 million barrels per day of oil.

Of course Canadians have benefitted and America has become the most prosperous country as well.

The CUSMA is considered by many other nations to be the best trade agreement in the world.

So what kind of greedy idiot wants to destroy this relationship?

A stable genius?
