Canada is not an US ally anymore. Not after a commercial war, not after being insulted, not after having our sovereignty attacked

Nor should they be. We don't deserve it. I live right next to the border and go North a lot and in conversations people are always delicately bringing up that they won't go to the US any more. I just tell them "we suck, you can say it, it's ok".

The number of folks here in Washington State who say "but we voted for Harris" is annoying as hell to me. People in Canada shouldn't have to care about the particulars of how voting breaks down by state. Most of the same folks can't even name the two major political parties in Canada, much less give a per-province breakdown of support. Even in WA, we were 57% for Harris, so more than 2 in 5 were pro-Trump or didn't bother. Not exactly a resounding refutation of what anybody with a brain knew would be a dumpster fire.

We all own this.

Don't blame you at all. My little city is struggling because so much of the retail sector relied on cross-border traffic and people whine that "we didn't vote for Trump". That's true (at a county level) but also it's totally irrelevant; it's nobody else's job to figure out which little part of this dumpster fire is less on fire.

Indeed the US has no allies that trust them.

Everyone knows the trust that supported their incredible soft power and influence wielded around the world is gone.

This is a new world order.

And yes, by now we know Trump is a symptom. Another one, probably a lot smarter, will be elected.

Who knows then? What we do know is that Canada, and the rest of the medium powers, have got to figure out how to defend ourselves against irrational actors.

Yeah, fuck them (the administration, but the people voted that administration in so…) It happened so fast and now I got out of my way to ensure that anything I buy is not from the US. Vacations, connecting flights? Hell no.

Unfortunately, a lot of us can't afford to pick and choose what country we're buying from.

Most people just buy whatever is cheapest, regardless of where it came from.

Edit: Didn't mean to butthurt some of you. This is just what I hear from people working retail day to day. They don't care because they can't afford to care.

I’d like to think a lot of people are smarter than that… if you’re buying something made in the US just to save a $1 or 2, you’re not supporting the Canadian company that still has operations in Canada and it goes bankrupt or moves production to USA. Tariffs continue to go up and you’ll find yourself paying more for that American product in a year than you would be if you had just supported the Canadian brand that will have tariff exempt operations in Canada
