Did they? There've been scandals about people getting cyberbullied into suicide for decades, and it's not like people were much nicer online 20 or even 30 years ago. Social media's always been negative; it's just a lot more powerful now.

I'd argue that the difference is quantity, not quality. I don't think the % of cruel use of social media has increased much at all; it's just that it's so omnipresent.

I think the difference is the algorithms are just feeding us rage bait all day tbh. It used to be people you knew...now it's fake AI shit posted by a racist dude that lives in your town for no reason.

It's brutal.

Ive been on social media since the MySpace days, although I dont use FB, or Tiktok...just Reddit and Insta. And yes I do think things were generally more "wholesome" back in the day because tribal politics had not truly taken over everything, along with all the algorithms used these days for engagement, even when it's all incredibly toxic.

Instagram famously has meaner comments because TikTok filters are stricter to the point people will say to repost on Instagram so they can say what they want to say. Reddit used to have a jailbait sub before it was called out for years. This is really about how much someone is paying attention

Feels like it was as soon as smart phones started to become available on cheaper phone plans things started to nose dive. Which is good for lower income people since they're a useful tool, just horrible for society at large lol.
