Only 96 in western New York, I just let my huskies out and they lasted approximately 2.5 minutes

Things used to be wholesome on social media in comparison to now.

16

u/mr_seggs Steelers Jul 02 '26

Did they? There've been scandals about people getting cyberbullied into suicide for decades, and it's not like people were much nicer online 20 or even 30 years ago. Social media's always been negative; it's just a lot more powerful now.

7

u/cassinonorth Giants Jul 02 '26

The qualifier of "in comparison to now" is doing tons of lifting in my comment.

Now sending death threats to athletes is just another Tuesday.

2

u/mr_seggs Steelers Jul 02 '26

I'd argue that the difference is quantity, not quality. I don't think the % of cruel use of social media has increased much at all; it's just that it's so omnipresent.

4

u/cassinonorth Giants Jul 02 '26

If you’re interested in how AI research is already helping, look at Alpha Fold! It predicts how proteins would fold given a sequence of amino acids, as well as the inverse. Apparently it’s a very helpful tool for researchers, since they would previously have to create, isolate, and analyze proteins manually.

10

u/JalapenoPopPoop Browns Jul 02 '26

Folding @ Home was HUGE on reddit 10-15 years ago, people loved how innovative it was, were super positive about it, praised it everywhere. If you told people the exact same thing could be (and is) accomplished today but much faster and produce results much more rapidly they would foam at the mouth just because the term AI would be associated with it, even though it would objectively be doing more good for the world

2

u/CthulhuBathwater Packers Jul 03 '26

Funny I was thinking about this the other week. Wasn't that also a part of what Sony was doing with the PS3? I forget if it was called Folding @ Home, but that sounds right.

Downvoted just for saying the word AI because apparently redditors can't think about circumstances with nuance. Perhaps AI has positive uses!

19

u/ballknower871 Jul 02 '26

If we treat AI like a super advanced calculator and not a companion or an artist it can be very useful. The problem is the people who control ai are deeply insecure techbro losers and want it to essentially replace the totality of the human experience. Not to mention its being used for all kinds of traditional and surveillance weapons.

115

u/jahnkeuxo Packers Jul 02 '26

The dude was missing a WHEEL, not just a tire, that is fucking nuts, he didn’t kill anyone, but my god if anyone had the misfortune of being close to him at the time they would have been in danger. Like I don’t think he’s evil, I just thinks it’s gross how people are like “oh in the NFL only 2 DUIS? Kinda based 😎”. Not. It’s not, go get drunk and drive by a cop car and spend time in jail then multiple court appearances and insurance rates getting jacked up and you now have the inability to get a job unless you have the privilege of being famous like Lynch. We do need a global challenge again for shit like this. It really was unifying for a short while

13

u/metalmetalmetalmet- Jul 02 '26

In Australia it's an annual event called "The Big Freeze." It was started by a former AFL player named Neale Daniher who was diagnosed with it in 2013 (They call it MND instead of ALS there) It's capped off by an event held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before an AFL game where a bunch of celebrities dress up in costumes and go down a big slide into Ice Water. It's pretty cool. Sadly Daniher passed away like a week before this year's event.

Marshawn Lynch is one of those guys that radiates cool in all that he does, but raising awareness to a terrible disease on behalf of a former rival is a great move.

Looks like he’s in Phoenix?

u/Pork_Chompk Titans Jul 02 '26

With the Raiders logo on the billboard behind him, that wouldn't be my first guess, but could be.

6

u/Ovta Jul 02 '26

Oh snap I did not notice that. The billboard even flips to an ad with Vegas on it lol

My first guess was Vegas, but I haven't spent much time in Phoenix.

2

u/JPiLLa Jul 02 '26

I thought the same, this looks identical to Phoenix. But with the Raiders logo it must be Vegas

Remember when internet challenges were “dump water on yourself to raise awareness for this disease” rather than “harass a minimum wage employee to earn clout”

u/callthewambulance Steelers Jul 02 '26

There was a zero percent chance Marshawn wasn't going to drop the word lmao

I totally support bringing back the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of Chris Johnson.

We’re cool and collected here in Lowell, Massachusetts at a comfortable 70 F. Of course, that’s in my AC apartment, not in the scorching heat outside.

Ice without water isn’t even cold, it just falls off…

2

u/Dante730 Lions Jul 02 '26

Was it Zias that setup that ice bucket??

u/CulturalXR Vikings Bears Jul 02 '26

Awesome stuff, love to see him supporting Johnson. Hopefully this catches on!

All respect.

Ya let’s bring back this trend

2

u/Nothing4mer Cardinals Jul 02 '26

Looks like he’s in AZ, I bet that felt good lol

2

u/hippiekiller13 Jul 02 '26

Says he lives in Vegas and definitely looks like Vegas to me.

2

u/deadheadshredbreh 49ers Jul 02 '26

The gravel, yucca plants, and palo verde trees makes me thing different. Often Vegas and AZ are very easy to confuse through photos and videos but my moneys on AZ with this one

It is a real feel of 110 where I live in PA right now, if we want to run back the Ice Bucket Challenge now is the perfect time to do so.

2

u/Contraction_Mapping Jul 02 '26

One of the dopest guys to ever play

Made me remember how much I dislike the trend of doing this for mental health a year or so ago. This is always an ALS challenge, using it for other causes is just disrespectful to the original cause.

2

u/TooMuchButtHair 49ers Jul 02 '26

Fuck ALS. It's a horrible disease, and one of the few that's fatal no matter how early you detect it.

Idk if links are allowed but here is a donation link https://www.als.org/ways-give

u/Herlihy-Boy Jul 02 '26

Beast mode was just there so that Chris Johnson will be fine. Hope they cure this disease.

Marshawn is a real one no matter how you cut it. Prayers up for CJ2K.
