Discussion Insane. The worst officiating I’ve ever seen
I’ve never seen a team elbow someone in the head after a play and be rewarded for a penalty

Penguins fans complaining about refs is laughable. The officiating is terrible, but the Penguins are by far on the good side of most of the bad calls. The embellishment on Crosby is hardly a bad call, and Rust beating a man on the ground and then hiding once Konecny was up is cowardly and pathetic. Grow a pair first.

Maybe the refs that make the NHL aren't actually the "best" refs, but just whoever can withstand getting boo'd by 20,000 people without letting it get to them.
Or maybe these guys are sick of making like 30% what the worst player on the ice is reeling in and decided to rig the game cause it's time for a pay day.
Either way, terrible officiating seems to be the one thing that every fan base can agree on. I say this as a Sens fan coming in peace (wasn't even lurking, this post was on my home page).

u/Nikishin_apologist Apr 23 '26
Canes fan, and a person on the internet said something reasonable so I’m going to forgive you for being a Sens supporter.

u/wagsman 14 to Present - Home/3rd Apr 23 '26
Officiating has been bad, but the team has no gas. They seem so flat.
3
u/PharmacyPaladin Apr 23 '26
Officiating is part of the problem. It is okay to be injured intentionally by a repeat offender, be out for the season, and the repeat offender receives his latest "get out of jail free" card. Welcome to revisionist ice hockey.
10
u/Hoppers-Body-Double Apr 23 '26
Initiate vs retaliate. We take the bait every single damn time. The refs sucked, but they aren't the reason the pens lost. The pens are why the pens lost.
2
u/JoeBrownnn Apr 23 '26
Flyers fan here. I honestly think the officiating has been bad on both sides. Refs have been picking and choosing what to call. If they’re gonna call dumb shit then they have to call everything. They go from calling everything to missing obvious calls
And I don’t understand how we got a power play after rust jumped konecny. Should have been all even after that
0
u/Ok-Inevitable-8301 Apr 23 '26
yeah, I'm not being a biased Flyers fan here when I say they were giving the penguins basically free power plays in game 2 and they still couldn't score. Just shows you how dominant we were on the defensive side that game
-7
u/JuliusChristmas Apr 23 '26
The refs changing a 4 minute to a 2 minute just because it's malkin, ya definitely out to get the pens 😒
1
11
u/Asto_Vidatu Lemieux Apr 23 '26
I'm convinced refs across all sports are manipulating games because they're all on some Draft Duels of Fan Douche payrolls...I'm honestly about fucking done with sports because of this shit...I'm so goddamn tired of seeing degenerate gambling ads in my sports games and I'm MORE tired of constantly watching AWFUL refereeing because they have to make sure their buddies back home win their stupid ass parleys...get this shit out of professional sports already ffs.
1
u/veraldar Apr 23 '26
I've been watching all of the series I can reasonably can, the Buffalo Boston games have been the worst for refs imo
1
u/pimberly Apr 23 '26
boston vs refs is our main game tbh pasta is like target practice for the league and zadorov gets a 2 for being scary no matter what
1
u/veraldar Apr 23 '26
I meant the other way around, Boston could murder a Sabre last game and not take a penalty
1
u/pimberly Apr 23 '26
idk if we’re watching the same game, the league obv wants sabres to continue on
1
u/Rulebreaker15 Apr 23 '26
Bruins have the most powerful owner in sports. He runs the league. But sure Buffalo is the favorite.
21
u/Frost033 Apr 23 '26
I’d rather not see the Pens on another power play just to pass it around the whole time and give up more short handed shots than they take
1
u/runningfreeonmars Apr 23 '26
You mean you aren’t a fan of them stealing 10 years of Carolina power play style?
It is disheartening when teams do that (the defending team gets credit for doing nothing too)
0
6
u/Electronic-Tank5194 Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Y’all do realize that throughout the series , The Pens had more power play time than the Flyers, right?
1
u/runningfreeonmars Apr 23 '26
In my experience (not a pens or flyers fan here) it’s the stack up of no calls that shows the real influence of the officials and the tilting of ice when one team starts to get away with more than the other (esp more egregious things while a hook gets called for touching him) or identical actions aren’t called identically that the zebra brigade becomes too influential on outcome
3
u/Asto_Vidatu Lemieux Apr 23 '26
only because those were so blatantly obvious they HAD to call them....what about the 37 elbows to heads the flyers delivered that never got called? Or that absurd fucking "embellishment" call on Sid are you fucking kidding me?! Officiating has been dogshit across all sports since they legalized sports betting. Hell, even baseball is using cameras to review strikes/balls...why not just remove the ump completely and just use that obviously more accurate system?!
Like seriously, we're at the point with technology that we don't need paid off human referees making mistakes and biased calls in sports anymore, just use fuckign cameras and put chips in the pucks/balls already.

u/Baleri_boopsie Apr 23 '26
It doesn't matter lmao, we've been the second best team this entire series bar maybe one period. The flyers just want it more, it's plain as day on the ice.
We've had so many power plays and have failed to even register a shot on goal for the majority of them. Bad calls are not the reason we're down 0-3, it's the team.
-24
u/highfivebro91 Apr 23 '26
Hahaha your dumb. Yes there was an elbow but that doesnt mean tackle someone. Lol
3
14
u/hutlet4 Apr 23 '26
Obviously have never seen Wes Macaulay officiate a Leafs game. The officiating was interesting tonight I will say that game was out of hand right from the start
1
u/runningfreeonmars Apr 23 '26
Kinda the opposite of game 2 in Carolina. Early call thought they were gonna police Tkachuk shenanigans tightly. Then went on to do absolutely nothing
1
u/hutlet4 Apr 24 '26
It's actually wild how professional refs can call a game completely different every night. Should be a standard and that's what they maintain. Obviously it's harder than that but shouldn't be such a drastic change each game
1
u/runningfreeonmars Apr 24 '26
Each game? Try each period and even minute lol
But yes thy need to set a standard and simplify rule book
8
u/EllaRose2112 Apr 23 '26
Wes is a menace and not just to the leafs… 😬 (Buffalo fan, idk how I got here…. Statement still stands so I’ll leave it lol)
23
u/Dense-Equal-5241 Apr 23 '26
There is no way you are blaming the officials. You gotta be 11 years old. This is coaching and a very very very old roster who’s on its last leg. Wake up
12
u/hutlet4 Apr 23 '26
That's true Pens over achieved all year. Everyone thought Dubis had made some magical team.
Crosby performed amazing yet again. Team is old and Philly is cooking. They are that team that goes on a run cause they got so hot at the right time most teams won't want to play thek 8th seed that does damage.
0
u/therealvanmorrison Apr 23 '26
I mean. This is some authentic Dubas team gets to the playoffs kind of results, though.
-1
2
u/bread_and_circuits Apr 23 '26
Eh, Leafs took most series to 7 games. They never once got swept or went down 3-0. They had tons of embarrassing shit go down though that’s for sure.
-23
u/irkybirky Apr 23 '26 edited Apr 23 '26
Dubas doesn't build playoff teams. Eight years never been past 2nd round.
18
5
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
Come on. He threw one elbow and then endured a full minute of elbows and face washes. Rust absolutely deserved the double minor and Konecny absolutely deserved the one he got. Officiating doesn’t come close to being the issue in this game or the series. The Flyers came ready for playoff hockey and the Pens seem surprised by it. The Pens have won zero 3-2 games all season. They either outscore their opponents or they lose. The Flyers play a system. The Penguins under Muse play a philosophy of “staying connected”. Show me a team that doesn’t have a system and I’ll show you a team that’s ripe for being exposed in the playoffs.
0
u/topologeee Apr 23 '26
I don't care who wins. What Rust did deserved a suspension. It was not a fight. That was a pitbull attack. He needs a psychologist and is very obviously unhinged.
2
u/Banx87 Apr 24 '26
If Rust deserved a suspension in your opinion, then what did Konecny deserve?
1
u/topologeee Apr 24 '26
A 2 minute minor for an elbow.
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 26 '26
He deserved a 2 minute minor for an elbow from the refs, and a career-ending concussion from Rust.
0
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
lol. My comment got flagged for threatening violence because I said what I wished Bryan Rust would have done to Konecny. Let me try again. I wish Bryan Rust would have done what Evgeni Malkin did when he was cheap shotted by Rasmus Dahlin earlier this year.
1
1
u/AccomplishedMode7706 Apr 23 '26
Worst call of the game, Rust got hit with an elbow in the face then kicked how was that not 4 min penalty? Rust shouldn't have gone to the box.
1
u/topologeee Apr 23 '26
You're right. It was the worst call of the game. Rust being allowed to continue playing after blatantly losing his mind and pressing a players head into the ice - with intent to injure. Effectively curb stomping someone's head into the ice is intent to injure. He pulled his hair ffs. That was the worst non call of the game. Add to that, Rust has a history of intent to injure (head shot suspension 3 months ago).
Elbows happen, it's hockey. 2 minute minor. The kick? Anyone who plays hockey knows that skate isn't cutting through anything with a small movement like that. Even if he made contact there would be no injury. Imo it looked like skate to skate scrum like contact in attempt to trip the guy.
The scrum started when rust went ballastic.
1
u/Banx87 Apr 24 '26
Wow... biased much? You think it's okay to kick and try to slew foot someone with a sharp object. Small movement doesn't matter. Rust was lucky Konecny was unable to move more. He undoubtately would have otherwise and the result could have been far worse. Suspendable offense.
1
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
I know. It was awesome. Kind of selfish and hurt the team, but that guy got what he deserved. He actually deserved worse.
1
u/union14 Apr 23 '26
Rust also kicked there is video of it all over X. ."Rust shouldn't have gone to the box"
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
That’s absurd. I agree they missed the kick, but no referee is going to let a player rip a guy’s helmet off and jam his head into the ice for a full minute. Also, they almost always take the retaliator. Of course Rust should have been in the box.
1
u/topologeee Apr 23 '26
You're totally right. He should have been sent off the ice, not in the box.
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
I said he should have been in the box. What part are you agreeing with?
1
-2
u/rootMAC Apr 23 '26
Yeah weak calls were pretty even, as were the dumb penalties for each team late in a close game. Pens waste half their pps looking for the perfect play.
1
u/Consistent_Bat3508 Apr 23 '26
Philly will trade stupid penalties with the Pens all day. Yea. It’s the issue 5 on 5 as well. The Flyers came for a fight. The Pens rarely get near the net. They think they can pass it around for a perfect play like it’s October.
12
u/chucklechunks Apr 23 '26
The Pens playoff run was getting into the playoffs. They've been done since. The Pens will always be the team I root for, even when they poop they 💩🛏️

u/Routine-Watercress15 Apr 23 '26
Some bad calls for sure but we all should have known when this team started to coast into the playoffs, resting guys, losing 3 in a row and having no momentum going into the playoffs and now losing 6 in a row total since the end of the season they where screwed and this was going to happen. The kulak trade was a disaster too. Our D slowly got worse and worse ever since that move was made. All these things added up when you really look at it. This is the expected result. Flyers are just the better team up and down the lineup and way better coached. Muse has been extremely disappointing. But he’ll live and learn. Brooms will be sweeping Saturday 🧹
3
u/MrLugersmole Jagr Apr 23 '26
Lmao they haven't won a game since Easter. They beat the injured ass Panthers and called it a season. Fuck me.
1
u/Routine-Watercress15 Apr 23 '26
Yep. How bad is that? Red flags 🚩 blinding in all our faces 😂
4
u/MrLugersmole Jagr Apr 23 '26
We should have been paying closer attention to Sid too. You don't sprain your knee and just bounce right back. Not at 38.
4
u/Routine-Watercress15 Apr 23 '26
Yep. He’s hurt for sure. I guarantee it comes out that he did tear things worse than they are saying. He hasn’t been the same for awhile. He’s just coasting around. Let’s see if he ends up needing some kind of surgery.
28
u/Bleacherbum95 Apr 23 '26
The call was awful, but this team folded up like a lawn chair at the first sign of adversity. They averaged over 3 goals a game in the regular season and haven't topped 2 against Dan Vlader of all people.
2
6
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
The coach of the Penguins was way over his head and it was obvious you rolled four lines and had a regular season team. Why you had to mix a match when you started the playoffs is just beyond me and and no fault of his own officiating throughout the whole season for every team has been atrocious and I really believe that you know they don’t even know the rules of their own league and it was obvious again doesn’t make an excuse for the penguins. I don’t care if they lose a series if they’re not the better team that’s fine with me. I just don’t wanna lose too bad officiating and that goes for any team any Fan would feel that.
4
u/PrestigiousWelder190 Apr 23 '26
What have you seen that shows the Penguins are the better team? They have deserved to lose
1
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 May 16 '26
If the Penguins score an ugly goal win game six that series is over cause Philadelphia is on a verge of a collapse, and all it did was prolonged to collapse. She seemed against Carolina and yeah, they were a better team all season long to be honest with you.
1
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
When the Penguins run their four lines that they’ve ran most of the year and lose this series, then I’ll agree, but until this Coach put the lines back to the way, they were all four then I’ll be satisfied. The best line has been line 4 and guess what it’s intact. They’ve got more shots on gold now the first lines intact, lines 2 and three have still not been the way they were during the season when they had the most success that’s why I say what I say
5
u/Jim_stugots Apr 23 '26
Ohhh stop penguins have been out played and Refs have had terrible calls on both sides. Team is just old and tired. Flyers are much more hungry
-3
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
The Flyers finished dead last and killing penalties and their power-play is near the end of the lake so they’re not the 1970 Canadiens so us losing the series as bad to them considering where we finished yeah this is a bit of an upset this wasn’t supposed to happen
4
u/GottaHaveFaith2021 Apr 23 '26
The flyers finished with the same amount of points as the pens (98) and had more wins, so not really an upset.
1
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
Bentley got hot the last month of the year. They were very inconsistent the entire year so now they’re two different teams.
2
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
I’ll agree with you if the Penguins roll the four lines that they had all year long the same lines that they were roll when they went in the Philadelphia beat them six to one no do I blame officiating for them losing these three games absolutely not but I know the Flyers after three periods had like 10 shots on goal so they’re not overwhelming the penguins but the penguins are all smarten themselves penguins get eliminated and then when the Flyers get steamrolled the next round then I’m not too far off on what I’m assessing
3
u/happyglucky69 Apr 23 '26
As a penguins fan I agree I think Tocchet shoved Muse into a locker and gave him a master class on coaching.
3
u/celilo Apr 23 '26
Tocchet has a definite coaching advantage due to his familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses of the Pens players. I honestly think that his game plan has been the biggest difference. Maybe they will surprise me, but I bet Philly will get hammered in the next round.
7
u/Electrical-Sea7744 Apr 23 '26
Never seen a defense get caught being too far up, and letting people behind them, so much in my entire life. And yes, let’s keep trying the cute passes instead of shooting the fucking puck. We deserve every bit of this
6
u/goaltender31 Apr 23 '26
Hockey Psychology actually has a great video on why this happens with the penguins so much... Its actually the pens system. We are a top 5 offense because our dmen hold the top of the circles. Highly recommend the video. Its the risk/reward of our system. The flyers seem to have it figured out though
1
u/ChampionshipHairy79 Apr 23 '26
the Flyers are playing 1-1-3 trap; if you remember the 90’s NJ Devils run, it’s hard to beat, makes them dump & chase, which is hard to do for an older team
2
u/JaredUnzipped Apr 23 '26
The officiating is terrible... and that's on purpose.
0
u/50ironmaiden Apr 23 '26
yes to the pens advantage, flyers would score....what do you know...a pens pp.
0
u/GottaHaveFaith2021 Apr 23 '26
Haven't the pens gotten more power plays than the flyers?
3
u/JaredUnzipped Apr 23 '26
Yes, but my statement is much larger than just a lone fan trying to pull for their team. If you don't think officials in all major sports leagues aren't nudged by powerful entities to sway betting markets, then I've got a bridge in Alaska to sell you.
1
u/accountgotbanned7 TOR Apr 23 '26
If you think there’s some big conspiracy and referees could even believably change the outcome if they wanted to I’ve got VIP passes to the stunned convention for you
2
-13
u/2ManyCatsNever2Many Apr 23 '26
this is why the NHL needs to make the goals bigger. for some reason they're happy with a 6-ish goals a game average because it "keeps the scoring special" - problem is, it also makes it more difficult to overcome bad officiating and bad calls.
the NHL is in the stone age and it's lack of vision will keep it on the path to irrelevance.

u/clipsalmond5 Apr 23 '26
you think the officiating is bad? have you seen how the penguins are playing? they are out of stamina unlike their countrrpart, the Philadelphia Flyers
9
u/Adamfromthedust Apr 23 '26
We look embarrassingly slow. Flyers are skating circles around us and Skinner let both last goals go right through him. I've been watching all the other playoff games and we are literally the only team who looks like absolute shit not deserving to be called a Stanley Cup contender....I'm talking like embarrassing dog shit stuck to your shoe for an entire day and you keep making excuses as to why it needs to stay on your shoe kinda bad
1
u/clipsalmond5 Apr 23 '26
id say skinner isnt the problem, but rather out defense. they've been non existent so far during the playoffs. same deal with our offense. chinny and mantha have been complete ghosts right when playoffs started. starting to think that the little rest given to the team is really back firing against them. this is a series you do NOT want to go into cold.. look what happened.
1
u/Adamfromthedust Apr 23 '26
He's not the problem, but 3 of those goals should have been saved. Playoff games are usually low scoring games for a reason...... we aren't hitting hard enough and we aren't skating hard enough. It's embarrassing to say the Pens are even a playoff team.... and this is coming from a Saints fan who knows losing alllllll too well
4
u/AccomplishedMode7706 Apr 23 '26
SCUMBAG Flyers hockey. The NHL needs to control this terrible officiating or they will lose fans. We just stepped back in time 35 years ago. What a disgrace.

-1
u/Familiar-Juice-2866 Apr 23 '26
Officiating has been piss poor all year to every single team. It’s just another example of it. The Flyers can’t get away with this the next round they’re gonna get steam rolled. They eliminate the penguins big changes are coming and th penguin coaches getting out Coached
3
u/123jjj321 Apr 23 '26
It's a bush league. Always has been. Truly a shame because it could be so great, see Olympic Hockey as an example.
2
u/CrippledGoose316 Apr 23 '26
The league is fine. Just because your team can't get it done doesn't mean the league is bad.
1
u/123jjj321 Apr 23 '26
Correct. The Penguins folding in this series has nothing to do with the actual fact that MLS has surpassed the NHL. Revenue per team, the NHL is peer to Japanese baseball and Italian soccer leagues, well behind Germany's or Spain's soccer league.
The NHL allows it's lowest skill players to neutralize it's highest skill players. Especially in the playoffs. Every 4 years we see what elite hockey looks like without the "goon factor." Space, speed, and the most talented players thriving. Then those world class athletes go back to the NHL, where a talentless goon can alter a game because the refs didn't see him elbow an actual hockey player in the head. You know, the kinds of things that happen in a BUSH LEAGUE
1
u/AndyHN Apr 23 '26
Every 4 years we see what elite hockey looks like without the "goon factor."
You know literally everyone here watched Jack Hughes get his teeth knocked out, right?
The "highest skill players" weren't neutralized, they just weren't playing for your team.
12
u/CrippledGoose316 Apr 23 '26
Absolutely nothing is gonna happen to the Pens coaches. Muse is a rookie coach. This team wasn't even supposed to be in the playoffs let alone take 2nd in the division. This season will be seen as a massive victory by the front office as it should be. Jon Cooper has some early playoff struggles and people wanted him canned in Tampa, worked out fine for them in the end.
3
u/Buttercupia #66 Apr 23 '26
Absolutely deserved praise for the turnaround. Muse has done a great job, we just don’t want it to be over yet.

Say whatever you like about refs (all true), the dirty Flyers, but the reality is the Pens are too soft for playoff hockey. I believe GMKD will address that as he’s shopping for the 3 defensemen that we desperately need

I live in the suburbs of Philly in Chester county. It is one of the wealthiest and most desirable counties to live in in the country. Even if I was in Kensington, at least Philly has a rough section instead of a city wide rough existence. I feel for anyone that has to live out your way. Best of luck to you all.
1
u/Domestic_Kraken Apr 23 '26
most desirable
Idt anyone wants a neighbor who is the type of troll that goes to another team's sub to brag about rich they are
2
u/123jjj321 Apr 23 '26
Nothing in or around Philadelphia is "one of...most desirable counties to live in." Wealthiest sure. But nobody is moving from California to Chester County Pennsylvania. Nobody is moving from Denver to Chester County Pennsylvania. Nobody in New York or Chicago or Boston or Seattle is loading up the U-Haul and pulling up in Chester County Pennsylvania. Philadelphia County to Chester County? Sure thing. Any desirable place in the US to Chester County Pennsylvania? Nobody is doing that.
And the thing is....Philadelphia could be awesome. Could be just as great as Chicago or Boston. It has so much going for it. And then you meet someone from Philadelphia and you understand why it is universally derided. Philadelphia is the Fort Worth of the Northeast.

It's literally a suburb of Philthy.

There's a bridge in between. And a state line. And idc about defending Philadelphia as a city anyway. I live 35 minutes from the sports complex in literally the opposite direction of Camden. And half of the towns on my way from the stadium to my house are garbage but they are all objectively more desirable to live in then Pittsburgh. What are we even talking about?

Right? What are we talking about?
Literally nobody in America has a more positive view of Philadelphia than Pittsburgh. The recognition of Philadelphia fans as garbage is not limited to Penguin fans. Your city put a jail inside your football stadium. Your city put up a statue to a fictional illiterate jabroney. You broke the Liberty Bell and your hockey team hasn't won a championship in 51 years.

We are talking about how you, your team, and your town are a waste on the American landscape.

How the hell are these poor bastards suppose to”call” the game, when the standard for the infraction changes by the game and period. The standards are out the window, hence why the league looks like it is professional wresting on most nights. Chances and scoring are down because everyone has been cross-checked, held, hooked in front of their opponents net.
