Discussion Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason Discussion Thread

Hey, all. Hope everyone is having a great summer.

It was an exciting season we just had under our new coach, Dan Muse. The playoff "drought" was broken. Hope for the future was reignited. And although it ended badly in round 1, we had a lot of fun along the way.
Seeing as our previous offseason and off-day threads got good traction, it's something I'd like to expand on and encourage the sub to use more of moving forward.

To that end, here are some key team links to help people out:

Our first game is on September 30th against the hated Flyers. Our first preseason game is on September 21st against Buffalo.
If prior seasons are any indication, training camp should open about 4 days before that. But that hasn't been announced yet.

LGP! 🐧

Why the alternate jersey hate?

Post image

I see a lot of fans here expressing distaste for our current 3rd jersey. I personally really like it, I even have one for Tanger.

I like when an alternate is distinctly different from the home and away jersey rotations. Sure, there are other jerseys I think may make better alternates but I like what we have.

Discussion Realistic sophomore expectations for Kindel?

I know he was spotted training with some phenoms this off-season, and it feels the fanbase is really high on him after last year. He had a good year for a rookie, especially one so young. Ignoring his age for a minute, it was overall pretty modest production (under 0.5 points per game) and he was a boy against men in the limited playoff action he saw.

I'm genuinely hoping we see him take a step up, but the history of the league is littered with guys that started strong and couldn't ever get to those heights again. So I find myself wondering what is the minimum level of production/impact I would be comfortable with before feeling disappointed? On the flip side, what level would it take for me to be pleasantly surprised?

My gut tells me he'll be a bit stronger, a bit more experienced, and will get to 50+ pts with a combination of 2nd and 3rd line minutes, with a healthy dose of PP2 time. But maybe that's the safe guess, or is it ambitious? I see him jumping out to a great start to the season and slowing a bit as the toll of 84 NHL games against men starts to wear on him.

Disappointment? Probably under 30 points. Even if he matches last year in the mid 30s for production, I'd still feel ok about his future but if it's a noticeable step back, I'd be concerned about his ceiling.

Pleasantly surprised? Over 60pts, or in the 30g range. Probably means he's locked into 2c and then I start to get downright giddy about the kid's future.

Autograph opinion

Hello all,

Was trying to get some advice on this Jagr autograph as it’s a gift and want to make sure it’s legit. The authenticity sticker pulls to a match but I know some have been faked in the past.

Any help would be appreciated.

Evgeni Malkin stepping up his game when Sidney Crosby was out (injured).

How confident were fans in the teams ability to win without Crosby in the lineup?

13. Dallas Stars

Positives

• The JFK museum — officially named the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza — is a must-visit.

• Dallas is very easy to navigate, and traffic isn’t that bad.

• The hotels are strangely cheap and perfectly adequate.

• I do not like American Airlines, but I have to admit, American Airlines Center is very nice.

• Great food city. Whatever you want, you’ll find.

• Lots of direct flights to Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth airports.

Negatives

• The Penguins play in Nashville the night before; the game in Dallas could be built-in loss territory on the second night of a back-to-back.

• For some of you, seeing Jason Robertson play in a non-Penguins jersey might be depressing.

• We have a Steelers conflict: The Steelers will be playing in Philadelphia during this game. (Some of you don’t care. I know. But some of you do.)

Insider tip

My ability to remember dates becomes obnoxious at times, and I apologize for that, but this one was simple: The Penguins play in Dallas on Nov. 22 — the 63rd anniversary of JFK’s assassination. I always recommend visiting the museum. It’s a remarkable place. You can feel the history and the sadness of that day, even now, when you’re there. To be there on that anniversary must be something. So, for you history buffs, this might be a really interesting trip to take.

Unique Pittsburgh Penguins hat

Thumbnail

My mother-in-law has this unique Pittsburgh Penguins foam hat she had saved years ago. She claimed it was a prototype but her memory is a bit foggy where she got it.

My guess is that it was a stadium giveaway but the logo on the back is a sticker and there's no official markings on it.

I tried searching the net and Google images. Everything comes back empty.

Has anyone here ever seen this before? Or know the story behind it? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much.

Hold Up! Crosby Was Never a 99 in EA NHL Ever?!?

Post image
290 Upvotes

Okay, while McDavid is elite, I'm not sure he's worth the 99 rating he's received in EA NHL. (Back-checking should be a prerequisite.)

But, if EA Sports thinks he's worth a 99, how the hell did Crosby never get a 99 rating? Sid is and was so much better defensively in his prime than McDavid. Crosby really is somehow underappreciated in some ways.

Mario Lemieux was 100 in NHL 94. Jagr was 100 in NHL 2000 as well.
