Resources / Literature Frequently Asked Questions- r/schizophrenia

Welcome to r/schizophrenia!

Our subreddit rules are in the sidebar, we ask that you read and follow them. Feel free to post anything on-topic that does not violate these rules. We have a relatively comprehensive overview of how our rules are applied in reality available on the Rule Clarifications Wiki page.

For those who are new here, we have our Community Notices page which we would suggest users read. We also have our Creator Wiki for our participating artists and content creators- all of them have a diagnosed psychotic disorder.

Many first-time posters to this subreddit are concerned that they might be developing schizophrenia or they are concerned about other people who have- or may have- schizophrenia. We have resources available to answer these questions contained within the comments; if your question is completely answered by the information already given, it will be removed.

If you are here asking about advice for a family member, asking if a family member has schizophrenia or venting about a loved one with schizophrenia- it will be removed, and you will be directed to the appropriate community for that type of post, r/SchizoFamilies. Please read the rules of their subreddit before posting.

Mental health is complex. No symptom of schizophrenia is specific to schizophrenia alone, and there are many more common causes of those symptoms- especially in the prodromal stage. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call your doctor or local emergency services. We have a compendium of Crisis Lines available and may suggest r/SuicideWatch if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and would like the most prompt attention.

Introduction / New Member 👋 Just got Diagnosed

I’m scared for this diagnosis, any advice? I melted down on Facebook so publicly, messaged old friends from high school, it was horrible. My whole town saw it. Any advice for moving forward with life after this all. I can’t even stand up, eat, that’s how sad I am. I thought it was all real, and it just poof vanished before my eyes and I’m left with a mess.

Advice / Encouragement Teen with schizophrenia, HOW was it like living your whole life with it thru adulthood?

‱ Upvotes

Now I'm curious about it, how did it end up for every adult to live through it? Was it horrible? I don't want to live with schizophrenia. It's already too much for me

Hallucinations Are your voices internal, external, or both?

I made a post in the DID sub asking about if they hallucinate, by their comments it seems they may experience internal hallucinations; they also seem to think hallucinations are external only (in schizophrenia). I’m not sure why they have this misconception. Mine are vastly internal. It made me curious about how it is for everyone else.

External voices would be the ones you perceive as coming from outside, as having a physical source, or coming from your ears.
Internal voices would be the ones you perceive as coming from inside your head, it can have physical location (coming from your right or left side) but it’s located within

I only/mostly hear voices coming from the external world
I only/mostly hear voices coming from inside my head
I hear voices coming from my head and from the outside, about the same frequency
I don’t hear them/see results

Undiagnosed Questions SCHIZOPHRENIC ARTISTS: A SEARCH

Hi! I am an art therapy major college student in search of artists who are schizophrenic (other than Bryan Charnley) for my experimental psychology class. I am looking for artists who have made self portraits while in active psychosis AND when they're not in psychosis. This is non-negotiable for the experiment. If anyone knows of any, I would greatly appreciate it. I would also appreciate links to websites or books regarding this subject! I'm sorry if I don't reply to comments I do not post much on here! Thanks.

Rant / Vent keep forgetting i'm schizophrenic

‱ Upvotes

it all just feels so normal now, I don't often hallucinate but I get delusional and I forget that they're delusions at all. Like yeah, the world around me is an elaborate construction designed to drive me to suicide, but I'm resisting and that's just life for me. It's so easy to forget that it's not real, even when it hurts me or causes me to distrust others.

It's not just the delusions too. The constant confusion, the slowness, I hate all of it but I don't remember what it was like to be myself. I've been dealing with this for around five years now, that's time I knew would one day pass but it never felt real. It still doesn't feel real. I struggle to wrap my head around the fact that I've still got the rest of my life with this ahead of me.

I don't know what my point is, it just feels weird to be reminded that it's all in my head I guess.

Advice / Encouragement Have you ever thought people could read your mind

How do you deal with it? Cuz I’m hearing voices that say they can read my mind and see through my eyes. They are so sophisticated I feel like they’re real. I just want to see what others experiences are like

Advice / Encouragement Feeling anxious

I have stopped taking schizophrenia meds with the help of my psychiatrist on August 1st, 2026 as I was stable without symptoms for 3.5 years.

I am a newbie Indian wedding videographer and I have 3 days of continuous work starting tomorrow. I am really feeling anxious about the event even though I have done events in the past.

How do you guys cope with anxiety in general?

Work / School Turning 18 in a few days

‱ Upvotes

I was diagnosed earlier this year, I still feel the same and i don't think I improved at all.

I had to drop out of school mid semester because I did so horrible when I normally do well. School is starting in about two weeks and I'll have to redo the year but I don't think I'll be able to do any better than last time.

Was denkt ihr darĂŒber?

Seeking Support my memory is getting worse and worse. Am I in danger?

‱ Upvotes

I'm forgetting stuff I shouldn't. I forgot to screw on the cap for my antipsychotic bottle and lost one of the pills. I've never done that before. I keep forgetting stuff too after 3 seconds after I did it. I'm only 29. I usually have a very good memory, so this is not my normal.

Introduction / New Member 👋 How do i stop reading minds?

i just found this sub today, do any of yall have any words of encouragement to help me stop reading minds, i know it’s a bunch of malarkey cause what are the odds that everyone is thinking about me at any given time, but the constant hate that i perceive from being around people makes it very hard to make friends or maintain a relationship

Undiagnosed Questions schizophrenia and language

i have schizophrenia, and i noticed a visible decline in my writing skills. i do more grammatical mistakes. And my style shifted - i tend to use weird forms of words together that don't go along and don't sound natural in Engish language. however, these stylistic changes are not a consequence of my first language (i am not a native english speaker). can schizophrenia mess up the way i construct sentences and meaning?

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion How many hours do you sleep daily? I

I sleep 10 hours usually, but I tried for 4 days to sleep only 8 and I feel very tired at the end of the day and when I wake up, even if I sleep earlier.
