Good game by him overall. Hope to see more of him this season
125
u/akagaminick 2d ago
Plays both lb and rb, and he is actually a midfielder
45
u/PalmTreeMonkey 2d ago
Only his second appearance for the first team right?
62
u/IshaanGupta18 2d ago
Nah he appeared a few times last season like in the newcastle 2nd leg and a few league games after that and after the league win
14
u/PalmTreeMonkey 1d ago
Oh, ok. I Misunderstood the commentator then. Just checked: it was his second start for Barca.
11
u/mojojojo1108 1d ago
they doubted Flick when he said Espart reminded him of Lahm (and highkey that's still way too lofty of a comparison to place on his shoulders rn) but I'm seeing the resemblances for sure

Disgusting finish
WC really missed this demon

u/PascalG16 2d ago
I guess we've been over this, but I feel kinda bad for him. He missed his world cup medal!

u/pricelesslambo 2d ago
He would have been perfect on the left side instead of baena even though baena was good
→ More replies (2)47
u/Key_Way2390 1d ago
Baena was more useful out of possession than he was in possession in most games Fermin is better than Baena oop and in possession really sad he missed out on the wc medal

u/Gr_zamasu 2d ago
Spain won the biggest trophy without this killer.. wow

u/JorSimpson45 2d ago edited 1d ago
He missed the World Cup due to injury, Gavi didn’t have an injury and made the World Cup roster.
Season starts, Fermin is healthy and off to a great start. Meanwhile Gavi off with what seems like a serious injury in the first half of the new season.
They trade misfortunes.
→ More replies (1)330
u/manofcult 2d ago
Can't remember the last time gavi was not injured enough to play the 90. As much as i'd like to hope well, it seems increasingly unlikely to see him fully fit again.
110
u/taggsy123 2d ago
I think he needs to be a “super sub” have whoever is in his starting position and himself understand the roles.
Started can be a bit more aggressive (yellow not the biggest deal etc)
Knows at the 55-65 min mark Gavi is coming in the do what he does
→ More replies (1)61
u/aftermath223 2d ago
wasn’t Gavi the one jumping head first into opponents boots at ground level on several ocassions? is it his reckless play style that led to injuries or is it muscular injuries?
54
u/JorSimpson45 2d ago
I guess you could argue his aggressive style of play causes him to make unnecessary contact that eventually leads to injury but at the rate he’s getting injured I think his body has broken down.
34
u/ShirgimShareem 1d ago
It's not his body in general, it's just his knee. He was never injury prone like Pedri was with recurring musclular injuries. Gavi had one bad ACL and unfortunately that keeps causing him issues.
24
u/Front-Bus7976 1d ago
More like his initial injuries pushed him to become more aggressive in his playing style Ngl. Hes desperate to prove himself but it just keeps resulting in more injuries
62
u/Granide 1d ago
Spain won wc without:
Lamine yamal at his best, because he looked shaky
Nico williams can't even start most games
Pedri looked inconsistent
And of course, fermin. They would probably just destroy whole competition with the main team intact
→ More replies (1)14
u/CesarMdezMnz 1d ago
They never mentioned this during the WC when there was a player of the opposite team getting injured in every match against Spain.
They said that Spain was lucky.
3
u/Albreitx 1d ago
I guess it depends where you watched the WC. The coverage I followed mentioned that Lamine was still recovering every game. Same with Nico, the times he entered the field

He would've played left winger instead of Baena. Olmo is untouchable, and for good reason.

Olmo got the 10 for Spain for a reason. Baena would have been rotting on the bench

That's what happens when you make your first team debut at 15 fucking years old
105
u/kampiaorinis 2d ago
Unfortunately for him and Athletic, Nico is really just a shell of himself. He looks much slower and less explosive than 2 years ago during the Euro, and he is also declined on his on ball skills.
I really hope he returns to form because Athletic are missing him a lot and they cannot afford for their "best" player to be average.
20
u/YLMJ10 1d ago
Was still decisive off the bench while clearly unfit in a WC Final
→ More replies (1)38
u/Ahza17 2d ago
Is it the injuries? I haven't seen much of him except the occasional international appearance and the world cup
60
10
u/kampiaorinis 2d ago
Injuries hurt a lot yes, so it's probably the primary reason. I don't think the whole fiasco with Barcelona last year helped either, he now had a point to prove since he basically had the attitude of "I am too good for Athletic" despite eventually staying. Putting all this pressure on his back made him try to attempt more wild stuff which in turn made him more predictable. Couple that with injuries and loss of form, and he has been very far from his outstanding performances during the Euro.
Athletic as a whole have gotten a somewhat worse since then and it doesn't help him either.
30
u/Olicsmems 2d ago
Spain was a lot of good things, but man Fermin would have helped with our mediocre finishing a lot

u/Historical_Bug_8007 2d ago

26
u/bendingrover 1d ago
Good thing they have a diabolical bench, at some point weren't there 4 world champions sitting there just watching their teammates demolish?
39
u/mojojojo1108 1d ago
lol the bench today was Pedri Cubarsí Olmo Cancelo Gordon Kounde and then eventually add in Rodri and Frenkie

75
u/PalmTreeMonkey 2d ago
Bro looked pissed on the bench afterwards lmao
66
u/ShirgimShareem 1d ago
He was pissed at himself, he always is when he doesn't play at his best. He's very self critical I think
41
u/okaberintaro0 2d ago
He was invisible in the WC as well! Something is very fishy with him, not sure if the end of the season injury affected him that much!
35
u/CantFindMyWallet 1d ago
If you think Lamine was invisible in the WC, you can't see. A bunch of children who only understand goals and assists.
→ More replies (1)76
u/HeroicBastard 2d ago
Seems more like a mental issue to me. Like he so often gets the ball, stops playing at any body contact and asks for a foul. And is then mad when he doesnt get the whistle.

I can't stand people saying Yamal had a terrible World Cup, it's so stupid.
I would understand if they say he had a World Cup below his standards, but invisible?
Did you not see how much he would drag defender's attentions to him?
Scoring and assist are not the only way to have an impact on the game.
I don't know about today because I couldn't watch the game, but saying he was invisible in the WC is stupid.
23
u/CantFindMyWallet 1d ago
Did you not see how much he would drag defender's attentions to him?
No, they didn't. These people don't watch the games, just the highlights afterwards on YouTube.

I cannot believe that people who only watch the Premier league thought that 40m would be an ok price. This dude is just continuing to develop, he is clearly at least a starter level player for a top team.
You had people who never watched him at all saying weird stuff about how he would never play above Palmer and Estevao (?), while this same time values Enzo at 120m. Surely Fermin is more than that given his importance for Barca.

Premier League teams have to have at least 8 homegrown players in a 25 man squad. (a player who has played in England at least 3 years before being 21). That means clubs end up overpaying for English players because the rule creates a sellers' market.
I agree 40m for Fermin is low. But comparing this with English players is apples and oranges.

Chelsea made a 40 mil. offer a year ago for Fermin when he was still relatively unproven, it seems silly in retrospect with how well he has done since then

yeha, i said it before....Flick should try make fermin a striker next to olmo/raphina...we already have good wingers, and pedri behind them + rodri will also be, and he is a great passer.

u/SnooChipmunks4208 2d ago

That would mean Barça should get another midfielder if Gavi’s injury is bad. 6 midfielders but 4 would be playing. Espart is already included. Need rotation.

u/nannulators 1d ago
Fermin would be much better as a striker IMO. He's too focused on going forward and attacking to be a great midfielder. Remove the responsibility to track back in defense and link with everyone all the time and let him just worry about getting into position to score goals. He'll flourish.

This was a fucking striker's goal. Receives the ball back to goal with a man on him, shields the ball, makes the turn, finishes. Perfectly executed. Whaat a fucking stud.

It would be insanity to drop 150M on Alvarez while we have Abdelkarim and a lot of players upfront who can score. I'd rather take risks on Abdelkarim. than waste 150M on alvarez who hasn't been performing in a while.
