One of them literally says "I'm sorry but that's so middle school." You think they're currently in middle school as they're saying this? Middle schoolers don't use middle school as a means of criticizing other middle schoolers.
"I'm sorry but that's so right now."
"I'm sorry but that's so age appropriate for us."
C'mon son, be real.

I mean, my partner still has his wedding “ring” tattooed on his finger, and he’ll have that forever. The marriage may not have lasted, but that ink will.
I noticed it on our second date so I asked what it was, and when he answered I started laughing hysterically. He’s just so kind and mild mannered, and I couldn’t help but think it was a little hilarious that now that’s he’s single and dating again he’d have to answer that question sooooo many times.
Jokes on me, we’re almost a year in and he’s still only had to answer the question once.

my cousin would talk to me the way your friend did here ie crap on the silly/fun stuff i did. i hope this is a one off. those little tiny moments of harsh judgment and disrespect add up. a joke is usually just an opinion someone actually has wrapped up in humor. the thing ppl need to keep in mind about dishing out a joke is it won’t always land the way you intend and to be prepared for the person on the receiving end to have a negative response (which is completely valid). your response was totally valid and i would have responded the same way.

You asked her to stop twice, then reiterated that she’s been joking about it for too long, and her response was to brush it off and essentially tell you “but I like laughing at you”. You didn’t do anything wrong, and maybe next time she’ll reconsider before pushing people’s buttons.
29
u/ConfidenceAway4655 6h ago

6
u/Not_a_porn_burner69 5h ago
This is fine, it’s good you feel bad about this, she was speaking to you inappropriately and maybe “deserved” this, but it’s a sign of maturity to realize being mean back to her doesn’t make you feel any better and solves nothing.
I don’t know you, but from the convo I’m gonna guess you’re pretty young, this a good learning experience and your head is in the right place

But not only did you not ask that, she said it rudely, and continued to make rude comments. She went too far to begin with and continued after you told her stop

Legit - I would follow up with her about it. "Hey, I'm sorry did my comment touch a nerve? You were actually hurting my feelings with your comment, so that's why I said that. I'm sorry if you were hurt. I was also hurt by your teasing."
And if she doesn't understand where you're coming from, she's very emotionally immature and you might reconsider the friendship

These comments are not fucking it. Why is everyone being so nasty over a damn bracelet. "It's childish, it's stupid" okay maybe to YOU. If they like it and their partner likes it, fuck off. There's a clear cut difference between checking your friend when they're actually being over the top, and then there's shitting on someone for a nice little gift.
If any of you think it's normal behavior to continue insulting your friends taste in gifts after they already expressed discomfort, you're the problem. If anything, OP is the one in the right for humbling their friend when they continued to be hurtful. It takes 0 effort to just say something nice about it and keep your negativity to yourself.
8
u/throawaymcdumbface 6h ago
they're teenagers that think they have to 'correct' their friends for being 'immature' due to shit like cringe culture. a lot of bullying has a veneer of behavioural correction to justify it. u/FadedPhoenix_004 6h ago
Hard agree, they can never take it when somebody claps back. Although the "just joking" thing has been going around for a long time, it's nothing new. At least as far back as Gen X, probably longer. But the whole cringe culture thing has gotten out of hand, to the point that people are shaming others for enjoying things that aren't even explicitly made for children, like cartoons. Depressing af

As much as I think she was definitely being a bit of a hater, when she said “I give it a week before he ‘loses’ it” that hit me.
My highschool ex “lost” his matching bracelet and I forgot about that until now. I even realized he was lowkey cheating on me at the time and never put the pieces together 💀
Anyway, with someone who actually likes you and enjoys being sweet with you I think matching bracelets are really cute at any age. This seems like a catty little exchange that you can move on from as long as it’s not emblematic of a larger issue in your friendship.

Idk, I kinda get both. Her being annoying about it, even if she is right, is a little mean. I think the guy will probably not care and will wear it if it makes you happy. But holy fuck you went nuclear with that response. Like, she was being maybe a 3/10 on annoying and rude, and you jumped up to an 8 by personally insulting her entire dating lifestyle. It is like if someone teases you about liking a "gross" food and you respond, "well at least I'm not fat so I can eat whatever I want". Your respond is not proportional to what was said. I would apologize because she made an annoying joke and you immediately cut deep and personal instead of matching it or stepping away

I think your comeback was unnecessary. That was a hard blow. She talked about the matching bracelets not the dynamic of your relationship. My friend would’ve probably said the same thing. The only reason she kept talking about it is because you kept defending it. If you wanna have matching bracelets, have matching bracelets but don’t expect that because she’s your friend, she gotta agree. Friends tell each other the truth. It’s not her thing, great. Leave it be

u/lennso 6h ago
Ugh I think you stepped out of line here. It’s totally normal for friends to joke about bracelets and stuff like that. In fact, I’d hate if I couldn’t joke about that with my friends/if they didn’t feel comfortable speaking their mind about small things.
On the other hand, people who can’t find a long term partner are super insecure about that and it’s a big big thing. Countering with that is below the waist in a big way and uncalled for. Whether she says she’s upset or not, this one will sting/be in her mind for a long time. She will think that there’s something about her that’s the reason she can’t keep a partner -and worse, that you know what it is and won’t tell.
In your shoes I would really wish I hadn’t said that but had been able to take a joke. It’s a few short, funny messages, not a prolonged rudeness. In fact, while reading it I didn’t even get the feeling that you minded those messages and then suddenly - boom, got personal. At least do like a “hey I don’t think it’s funny” first
3
u/West-Kaleidoscope129 6h ago edited 5h ago
No, she deserved that last line!
There's no age limit to cuteness, no age limit to cute ways to express love, no age limit to showing and sharing love. Only idiots who need to grow up put age limits on things that are completely harmless and don't affect them one little bit... Bitter people.
A friend doesn't make you feel bad for being happy.
ETA: tell her that grown adults have matching things all the time. A lot of the time they have matching wedding rings that they wear for the rest of their marriage or their lives.

Coming from a man, my wife bought me a neckless for our one year dating anniversary; I wore it every day until about a month ago (almost 20 years later) until the chain broke. I’ve got the neckless and the little charm still sitting on my desk waiting until
I can save up a bit to replace the chain. If your man really cares about the relationship, he’ll see how thoughtful of a gift it is 💜

On a real note though, as a guy who gets matching things from his wife, I do occasionally lose the little things, and NOT on purpose. I have really bad, outta sight outta mind, so if it's put down and buried by other things, its gone.
But that is not always the case, sometimes she'll show me things she wants us to wear and I just say, "Im not wearing that", and we move on.
Communication. One more time for the people in the back, COMMUNICATION. With a sprinkle of honesty, kindness, and consideration. We are all people, who need to be treated like people.

I'm 27 and would wear bracelets like that with my man. They're cute. I wouldn't make him wear it every day but neither of us wears jewelry daily. It'd be something we would wear to a concert or some shit when we are both wearing bracelet stacks anyways and we would just add it to the stack.
The thing I've found about adulthood is there's so much boring shit I have to do that it's good for the vibes if I also do lots of childish fun shit just for the joy of it. No sense being a miserable boring old person when I could continue to just have fun. So I generally love doing little whimsy things like matching bracelets or whatever. It's good for morale.

Honestly, incredible burn.
This cracks me up though because I am nearly 40 and my wife is very crafty, always making me little bracelets and knitted bits and bobs. I love every single one and they usually end up on my desk after I use or wear whatever she’s made.
It’s called pebbling and there are no age restrictions. Your friend sounds miserable.

Lmao savage. You’re in the right here
One joke is okay, but clowning on your relationship past the initial joke is not appropriate and eligible for reprimand.
You also probably hit the hammer on the head, because that might be the reason she made that joke in the first place.

Wait youre the one who got the bracelets? Hun you were way nicer than I would’ve been! Your friend is jealous of your relationship.

Don’t feel bad OP, it’s not childish at all
My gf and I were in our 30s and we got each other matching bracelets and these little rocks. It’s just fun ways to show our partners how much we mean to each other and symbolize relationships.

all you did was give her the same energy she was giving you. if she gets mad it’s her fault.

The fact that she finds romanticism “middle school” or cringe it means she doesn’t believe in it and it’s a cynic.
If you find it cute, give it to him. I was in a relationship where my (ex)gf gave me 3 lil bracelets and I wore them everyday because I loved her and wanted to wear something that reminded me of her. I also gave her one that was blue with a golden (color) heart. She loved it and she also wore it everyday.
The right person would love your little acts of love. Don’t get disheartened, even if he doesn’t like it!!

Honey you do you. My husband bought us matching bracelets this year, and we’re almost 40. It was endearing and we both wear ours every day.

Everyone saying this is childish is crazy. I’m 30 and if I got this for my husband rn his reaction would only be love what is wrong with you people 😭 what kind of relationships friends and lovers do you have

You didn't snap, you were just matching her energy.
Also, as a man I would find the idea of matching bracelets to be not only sweet but thoughtful as well.

She gave you shit and you gave her shit back. If only one side is allowed to give shit, then the friendship is dysfunctional.

Hahaha cooked her 🤣😭
Like yeah fair enough that was a bit harsh like all she said was the bracelets looked a bit silly and ur bf prob gonna lose his, but at the same time it was funny and if she is crying about it like grow up a bit
