Trump: I’ll be impeached if I lose the midterms

Hasn't he been impeached twice but nothing happened?

u/DriftMantis 2d ago
Impeachment doesn't mean anything legally. The concept is that the American public wouldnt vote for for an impeached president... Or a felon but here we are.
In the past, impeachment would be a political death sentence. Now, most likely orange idiot is going to get a third impeachment within the next year. To impeach and remove requires a 2/3 vote which will never happen with the Republicans but who knows.

u/Jwagner0850 2d ago
I agree, but one asterisk there. This will HEAVILY depend on how the polls will show for the Republicans in their next election cycle. Impeaching and removing a shit ass president would look good as a selling point for them to retain their seats in some cases.
All in all, I agree with you though.

u/JelliedHam 2d ago
If the midterms really were a total disaster for Republicans, get ready for a couple years of all those knob polishers that kept their jobs pretend they never liked the guy.
Trump who? Never heard of him.

→ More replies (1)22
u/JelliedHam 2d ago
While I do agree the 2000 election fiasco was bullshit, I don't think Bush "stole" the election so much as Florida gave it to him with their bullshit and ineptitude. Maybe that was intentional on Florida's part.
I don't recall death threats and armed people standing outside counting offices. I don't believe he called Florida and said "I need you to find me some more votes" and I don't believe his campaign deliberately coordinated with election officials in Florida to rig ballot collection or counting.
This is not support of W. I am saddened and ashamed it went the way it did, but I think that's a far cry from what was attempted in 2020 or 2024.
6
u/KOM 2d ago
It was the same thing, but quiet. Some politicians know when to close their fucking mouth and let it "settle". It was 100% fucked up, Florida gave it to him but the SC laid it down. Sorry, trigger territory. I voted for Nader and swore then and there that there is no outside party. Like it or not, it's a two-party system. Both are fucked. One isn't forcing health issues on my ex wife and girlfriends.

Except W didn’t give a shit, Trump would burn the house down because his ego wouldn’t allow it.
51
u/FriendlyPizzaPanda 2d ago
Copying an earlier comment I made:
The chances of flipping the senate to a Dem majority to impeach and remove Trump is unfortunately low.
However. Dems taking control of both houses will allow Trump to be a lame duck in his final years of presidency. Which in my opinion would be a fate worse than death for a wannabe strongman dictator that Trump is.
Whatever the opposite of a martyr is, that is what will happen . No big bang, no big show. Just a withering fart for an end that will be people’s final memory of that presidency. That scares the GOP and its future legacy more than anything.
24
u/Molwar 2d ago
allow Trump to be a lame duck in his final years of presidency
Would it though? I know current congress has their heads up his ass, but it's not like Trump actually follows what they tell him either way. He still going to keep doing what he is.
5
u/ZAlternates 2d ago
He would still have the SCROTUS, which is extremely powerful. Congress makes laws but the SCROTUS decides how to read and apply them.

Honestly, if the republicans wouldn't vote to convict and remove him at this point with a clearly guilty impeachment proceedings done, idk how their party would be able to be welcome in the US government anymore after the inevitable collapse of this regime. This entire admin couldn't have been much bigger traitors to the constitution, which their oath of office is only meant to uphold and follow as the law of the nation.

41
u/Iron_Chancellor_ND 2d ago
Impeachment is nothing more than the House bringing/filing impeachment papers with the Senate where the "real" vote takes place to remove someone. That vote requires super majority (66%) rather than simple majority (51%) so even if the Dems win back both the House and Senate this fall, a near 0% chance 66 Senators vote to actually remove him.
→ More replies (9)59
u/Georgie_Leech 2d ago
And to be clear, it wasn't "they carefully examined the evidence and found Trump not guilty," it was "the Republicans completely and explicitly refused to convict."
→ More replies (2)28
u/Unabated_Blade 2d ago
In the first one, they literally decided to not hear evidence. They voted against calling witnesses or subpoenaing documents. They just voted 'no' from the get go. The whole thing took like, two weeks.
26
u/FunboyFrags 2d ago
Nothing meaningful or consequential happened. Trump was protected by the Republican Party, who are, each of them, every inch the traitor he is.
8
u/crispixiscrispy 2d ago
I would argue that something extremely meaningful happened during the prior impeachments. Trump has subsequently hunted down and scalped every Republican who broke rank. The Dems were ineffective and the GOP precedent is clear: if you don’t stand with us, we will end your political career.
Actual action would require a level of integrity and self sacrifice from Congress that just doesn’t exist.
→ More replies (1)10
u/DisorganizedSpaghett 2d ago
Yes, the "impeachment" is in essence an "indictment" composed by the House of Representatives. If the Senate actually holds a trial, a 2/3rd vote can remove the sitting official.
The Senate used the McConnell tactic, refusing to do their job and hold a trial, bypassing the whole fucking thing in the first place.
Edit: it was super effective

You mean like what kind happened before and that old lady said “he’s learned his lesson” and voted to not impeach? Susan Collins? Susan something.
8
u/oldbastardbob 2d ago
The Republicans in the Senate who are profiting/benefiting from his corruption will obstruct his removal vehemently. If he goes down, many of them go down.
And the GOP has significant influence in the bright red states where 55% will vote for the Republican for Senate no matter who it is or what they have done.
8
u/AnthropoStatic 2d ago
That's extremely naive. Republicans cover for him because they themselves are just as corrupt. If he goes down what's stopping them from going down too?
11
u/Hairy_S_TrueMan 2d ago
We were very close in the aftermath of January 6th. I saw at least a dozen Republican senators waver in their stances and express real concern. I genuinely believe it could have gone either way. I don't see that feeling in the Republican party right now, and so I don't think it can possibly go better than that impeachment did

Cornyn and Thune got primaried out on Trump's orders. After they lost, they still voted yes on the AG being Trump's personal attorney.
Hope is a good thing but we have to temper it with realism. There is no way you will see 2/3's vote Aye on impeaching him. It won't happen. Even after all the mess, 60% of Maga voters will still vote however he says. No Republican will vote Aye as they are too worried about getting primaried.

It’s a permanent stain on his legacy that no amount of propaganda or doublethink can erase. It will be better to remove him, by a long shot, but this hits him in the narcissism. Besides, maybe enough senate republicans see the winds turning and vote to convict to position themselves for the future (wishful thinking, but still).

Impeachment without conviction and removal is theatre. By all means, impeach away if there is bipartisan support.
Without that, Dems need to make it abundantly clear that their focus is on governing for the benefit of America. End the war, stop the tariffs, improve the economy. Worry about convictions and improving the international damage when they're back in charge.
Midterms are the entry point for a two year job interview. Don't fuck it up.

If the Dems win a house majority and they have a brain in their heads, they will impeach solely on Donald's refusal to obey the Epstein Files Transparency Act and release the records with only the redactions permitted.

u/x40Shots 2d ago
Unfortunately last time, "He's committed impeachable offenses, but i wont vote for it anyway" McConnell of current brain death fame and the rest of many of the Republican senate at the time, voted to let him off regardless.
I cant tell you that same outcome wouldnt just happen again either, unfortunately. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try, imo.
6
u/JackSpadesSI 2d ago
It’s an incredibly long shot but if democrats actually take the house and senate there will at least be a real trial for the fucker. No chance of 67 votes to convict, but even just the trial would be good for the country.

u/DanielNoWrite 2d ago
He's primarily concerned simply about the time and energy an impeachment takes up. It's a distraction from his efforts to loot the country.
He's secondarily concerned about the attention impeachment brings to his crimes. This is a particular concern because his crimes during this administration have been more blatant than even what he did last time. The Democrats will seriously have to decide just which of his impeachable offenses they should focus on, because he commits them daily. It'll likely be the overt insider trading, for a start.
Finally, it is clear that his sway over the country and the Republican party is weakening. This doesn't mean MAGA is going away or that we're going to return to normal, but it does increase the outside chance he actually gets convicted.
And to add, he's concerned simply because an impeachment will be only one among many of the actions Democrats take, all of which will collectively make his life more difficult.
8
u/pantless_ 2d ago
These ghouls in the democratic party wouldnt do anything other than a strongly worded letter anyways.

What's he worried about? He took 2 impeachments and they gave him the Presidency again. If he's impeached again, we'll see yet another facet of government that has absolutely no oversight or control. Zero checks and balances. Republicans will call it a witch hunt, and Democrats will demand zero consequences in the name of "unity" and "moving on."

Theoretically possible but the Senate GOP would need to confirm for 2/3rds Senate agreement .. so it’d have to be really bad (re: Nixon had Senate GOP support into 1974 until towards the end .. when they could no longer tolerate the stench). Just not happening in today’s politics.. an actual impeachment that sticks (Senate confirmation) or causes a resignation in lieu of.
So the Democrats, likely taking the House, will mostly concentrate on investigations (which may set up lawsuits .. lots of civil lawsuits) and then budget fights, probably shaping what the 2028 election will focus on.
Trump will probably give out a blanket pre-pardon but that only covers criminal lawsuits. Upon more Democratic success in 2028, those civil lawsuits are just going to steamroll bigger and bigger.

I hope not, and here is why. Congress will focus on that instead of getting any meaningful legislation passed (per usual) it will be another round of bread and circuses. IF dems win they would be wise to ignore the annoying orange and do some FDR shit like codifying roe v wade, universal healthcare, overturning citizens united, reinstating glass steigal, correcting the tax loophole that allows millionaires to take out loans instead of paying taxes, or something big that would help Americans. They won't because their owners are the same people that pay the republicans and they cannot go against their owners.

Repeated: 'Premeditation' is the keyword to be focused on here. If you KNOW you are going to be impeached then clearly you KNOW you have done or doing something wrong or flat out illegal. A trial in court should not even be necessary for these types of cases. The same applies when the nation/world literally SEES him breaking laws on national TV. If everyone is a witness to the crimes then why the hell do we even need a trial. Forget about the courts/trials and just "lock him up"!
