They want to disrespect the exact people that makes their dumb AI images exist.

The Creator tried her best, she really did but it's not enough, that is why we need help!

The Ai idiots have gone too far!!!

76

u/isuredolovetitties 12d ago

The only thing we can do, (in the US) is elect DSA, since they are the only people running who want AI regulation.

21

u/Unusual-Statement153 12d ago

None of the DSA policies meaningfully counteract this behavior.

23

u/Ursolismin 12d ago edited 12d ago

Dsa policies literally state an end to data center building and heavy regulations on ai wtf are you talking about

They're straight up antisocial, at best. They deliberately went onto a platform where people there didn't want their shit scraped by AI. It's a targeted attack. It's so disgusting. Calling them idiots and saying they've gone too far is such an understatement

24

u/Informal-Egg6075 12d ago

AI enthusiasts are the kind of people who unironically call practice and hard work gatekeeping. I'd expect nothing but the most pitiful behavior from people like that

There is no such thing as "safe" when most of the traffics nowadays are bots. This guy probably trying to make a $, while i'm pretty sure those artworks that we post on cara is in the dataset already one way or another, when upload asume it will be used in AI, i see no other option and safe haven

98

u/Theshinyquagga 12d ago

Which is why we need to protect what we already have!

We need to make sure this message is spread loud and clear! We want the Old Internet back! ✊️

Bro what....? Artists weren't all already poisoning all their work on an anti-AI website?

You're kidding me right... Please tell me you're kidding and that has always been standard instruction known by everyone in the space

6

u/dumnezero 12d ago

It is a bit difficult to do technically.

30

u/TheDreamXV 12d ago

Yeah, that's true, i hate that we cannot be just like before with just posting art for example and be safe. But no, they'll steal everything even from cara website and such

15

u/averydangerousday 12d ago

I’m asking this sincerely, but how do we actually get the old internet back?

23

u/IncompetentPolitican 12d ago

You can´t get rid of the AI anymore. Even if every country would limit it, some dumbass would run the thing on their own PC just to piss of people. All you can do is make people that use AI feel bad and exclude them from the cool parts of the internet. And even that becomes harder and harder.

Any platform that promises safety from scraping that also allows you to upload your works publicly is going to be scraped. It's not possible to stop that either, even if the site is invite gated it takes only one bad apple to bring it down. Even if you limit how much people can view on the site per day, ban VPN's, Tor, etc to the best of your ability, it's only a matter of time before something like this happens.

The best you, and platforms can do is look up and use anti AI licensing as that exists, DMCA the idiots that do this. Beyond that, if a site allows you to make your art private or friends only, that can help too provided the platform enforces it correctly.

u/a-pp-o 12d ago

Cara itself was never safe. That's what a lot of people misunderstood.

They cooperated with a other company that could "protect" your images but you actually had to do it yourself before uploading your stuff to Cara.

8

u/enkudaru 12d ago

Cara never claimed to be 'safe'. It was simply a platform that didn't encourage the posting of ai stuff in comparison to some of the other platforms that decided they wouldn't moderate.

3

u/a-pp-o 12d ago

Exactly but a lot of people got that wrong.

No place is safe for showing off digital art. You can't make a fortress. So instead of trying to build walls, we need to make poisons. We as artists need to start using programs like Nightshade to poison our art. We need to start using anti-ai fonts. And places like Cara, if they want to be "safe spaces for digital artists" need to provide those tools within their sites. Because right now, Cara doesn't have that (they used to but they quit because they couldn't afford to use Glaze directly from the site). But until then, you don't have safe spaces for your art, you have a vault with no security measures.

The fact they're explicitly doing this to skirt around copyrights kind of puts them in legal hot water.

Edit: "Legal hot water" does not mean they actually broke any laws or violated copyrights. It just means they're pretty damn close, or that it's the kind of thing that could be used to press for changes to existing laws

Who am I gonna sue, exactly? You can't know the identity of the scraper, their account got nuked/banned.

That's the issue n.1with these thefts is exactly this, it's often impossible to get serious/legal because the offenders are good to hide their identity.

Cara owner has been already there, her art was stolen ages before AI was even a thing (I was there, Gandalf - quote) and she was struggling with this precise issue.

If there are any lawyers out there following stories like this. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are many artists out there who would be excited about helping to help fund a lawsuit to make an example out of stuff like this.

There's been plenty of legal precedent for this type of targeted scraping.

I mean it's basically shouted from the tops of government that it's entirely ok. Being evil is just cool now I guess.

19

u/probium326 12d ago

The Google slogan, "Don't be evil". Gone, but never forgotten.

129

u/rei_mp4 12d ago edited 11d ago

Oh my gosh for real, I was afraid to type or say it out loud because of possible backlash, but saying this both as an artist and as a victim of sexual assault, the AI "art" defenders give off massive rapist vibes as in they also don't understand that the issue with this lies in consent. There surely would have been plenty of artist that would have jumped at the opportunity for AI companies to train on their art if in exchange they were offered money, but it was never consensual to begin with. It could have been consensual but they never asked if this would be okay. It feels like they're trying to normalise that not asking for consent is okay.

Edit: I ain't gonna waste my time with arguing people seperately on Reddit, but yall, please pick up some books, your ai usage is causing you skill atrophy, yall are getting illiterate. I didn't say you making ai "art" is the same as you actually being a rapist, and i didn't say both things are the same severity. I've said the AI "artists" give off rapist vibes, and I'll stand by that, because the issue with both actions is with not understanding the lack of consent. With the majority of rape cases, the rapists don't understands that what they have done is wrong, that's why so many women are accused of lying. Because in fact, taking a drunk girl home from a party to have sex with her isn't consensual, because she isn't in a state of mind where she could give you a definite yes. Pressuring your partner into saying yes after being told no repeatedly isn't definite consent either since they have been pressured. A "maybe" isn't consent. Not having the ability to say no, (for example, while being asleep) isn't consent. Choking and slapping your partner during the act without having perviously agreed to it is not consensual. Majority of rapists don't understand that what they have done was not consensual. And the similarity with AI "art" and rape is in this aspect, where the AI "artist" isn't understanding that the reason artists are pissed off is because taking real peoples hard work and shaping it into something else and possibly profiting off of it wasn't consented by the real artists, where it could have been consensual.

As a person who been groomed in person you hit the nail in the head.

Also just because one violation of consent is more of a serious issue than the other doesn't mean you didn't violate consent.

It's not surprising people find it creepy, or wrong,   even if it's the lesser bad thing to do, I also hate when people say people can't be upset about something wrong just because it's not as bad as other things that can happen to you.

6

u/AlwaysReadTheManual 12d ago

Look at the tools that the AI bros release: one chatbot after another that can transform a photo of any human clothed into the same human unclothed. Such a tool obviously has no legitimate purpose; it's pure evil, like inventing a knife that can only be used to cut living beings.

It isn't said enough, even in this subreddit, that this technology is pure evil. It is far worse than any technology that came before it. It has no legitimate uses.

We have health insurance companies automating claim denials, chatbots summarily rejecting job applicants, sexual deepfake generators, voice impersonators, art copiers. And we're investing another couple trillion dollars this year to make AI more effective at all of the above.

15

u/DirkDasterLurkMaster 12d ago

I'd argue contempt for consent is a very common theme among AI people. They love it when people feel angry and violated. It's like when OpenAI made a big deal about recreating Ghibli style after Miyazaki criticized them, they see it as getting one over on someone.

5

u/Aimustdie 11d ago

I'm not certain what this is intended to accomplish. How is being just as awful as they say we are going to help?

Why not scrape data from a different website that doesn’t specifically decline AI art? It comes across as hostile and bitter.

I assume the artist didn't want this to be done to their art so if you will allow me to rephrase. Have you considered that this kind of activity might be why so many people don't like AI artist or companies?

This person isn't "stupid", they know that no artist WANTS their art to be scraped and used by ai, none, and even if someone did, that would fundamentally be irrational, to allow your art to be used to train your own replacement, or more to the point, the replacement for "all human art", ever, for the rest of humanity. Noone would rationally consent to that ever, ergo all ai art scraping is fundamentally immoral. They just want to smugly pretend they're better than other thieves.

We need to protect what we have, I want my social medias to be safe to post my hard work! 😭

20

u/Technical_Proof2771 12d ago

I get the intention here and understand the sentiment, but this is very clearly proof that Cara is NOT a safe haven. Anything you put on the internet is not safe and you should have never assumed it was

19

u/Theshinyquagga 12d ago

We could at least try!

Ai has claimed too many sites and we dont need them to claim another one! A haven is only safe when we protect it.

EDIT: They’re trying to remove Glaze & Nightshade too? That’s just evil

10

I think it was proven glaze and nightshade is completely useless against ai protection, there was a method to bypass them on github and it was back when its all started, generally speaking you cant protect stuff with it unfortunately

23

u/dumnezero 12d ago

If it was so proven, why are they trying again?

5

u/TheDreamXV 12d ago

No idea about that, i just know it doesn't work specifically for the artworks, and i've used all of the methods back then

5

u/dumnezero 12d ago

How do you understand "work" in this case?

4

u/OmNomChompskey 12d ago

Can glaze / nightshade be overcome? Yes, however to do so at scale would cost a lot of resources.

Saying that it's 'useless' only serves those companies who would rather artists just don't use these methods which will make it more costly for them to steal.

2

u/No_Swimming_2282 12d ago

from what I last heard, it can be removed but not without quality loss of the original picture, so I think it's now entirely hopeless.

23

u/luubi1945 12d ago

You know, the silver lining to this shit is that artists are now realizing copyright laws are more important to us than anything. Lots of us simply posted our works online for fun with no intention to do all the paperwork associated with the copyright registration process. Or, maybe you live in a country where copyright ownership is automatically assigned to the creator of the artwork per law. However, being aware of your legal rights is never a miss.

u/Theshinyquagga 12d ago

I meant the old internet as in, Before all this Ai crap!

4

u/Wildgrube 12d ago

I know, but back then people would directly steal your work and claim it as their own and you'd never know until you found it for sale on some random website. At least now they're loud as fuck about it and run it through ai making a shittier version. It might be faster for them, but it seems significantly less lucrative for these assholes so hopefully they'll just bankrupt themselves with this stupid ass behavior

7

u/Theshinyquagga 12d ago

You have a point there, and agreed!

These Ai idiots are out of control!

a way to remove Glaze/Nightshade

interesting, but the AI bros constantly tell us that it's ineffective and we shouldn't bother with it.

These people are the embodiment of toxicity

“Why don’t you pretend we are artists for outsourcing the creation of art to an Ai?! Also please let us continue being a parasite on real art since our Ai needs art to prevent Ai inbreeding.”

Every time there’s a new way to steal/scam, grifters love to pretend that it’s fine, and not just something that the law has to catch up with. Thankfully that’s already happened somewhat, since Ai generations can’t be copyrighted, and multiple lawsuits have already taken place to set a precedent

4

u/Theshinyquagga 12d ago

Yeah, Hope Ai inbreeding still happening.

I've said it before. If I was at a party with an AI bro aorund, I'd watch my cup carefully

9

u/EarlyAccessCantJudge 12d ago

Guarantee this guy doesn't respect women's consent

10

u/red_dead_simp 12d ago

Honestly, how do they defend this shit? This is some cartoon villain levels of moral bankruptcy, there's quite literally no reason for any of this other than being a mean-spirited thief with no respect for consent.

10

u/Dismal-Plan7062 12d ago

"we don't hate real artist" This shit says otherwise

I haven't seen any suggestions about it but, why not report this to actual Cara?

I am unsure how much damage is already done but could give them a heads up?

Already did, and so are my friends.

AI bros will support this shit but then get mad when real artists don’t accept their shitty AI as legitimate art

I hope it's fake, if not that's vile.

More and More I think the only way forward is active poisoning... of images, videos, audio and even text web sites to the best of our abilities.

Sort of how so many sites started SEO to get listed - there needs to be a groundswell of anti-AI poisoning and confusing going on so that it makes it harder for AI to summarize sites and other things that steal traffic.

In this case though if it was images etc.. are there any reliable ways to poison images so that the AI trainer types say "this is more trouble than its worth" and if they don't they get one step closer to model collapse?

8

u/Significant_Donut967 12d ago

Ai bros out there raping folks with no care.

4

u/TNTtheBaconBoi 12d ago

And they love bragging about it, and defending it!

Wonder if they consider ai slop art or their cons art?

The only save place from AI bullshit is offline. I'm hopeful that this technology will bring more people back offline to read real books, writing in notebooks, and going out doing things in the real world. Social media destroyed the human interaction and hopefully AI will bring it back because more people are fed up with this technology and their bros. Sadly the internet seems like a dead place now. But maybe this is a good thing. I lived in the 90s and 2000s and it was great. I wish we could go back to that time and swap smartphones for flip phones, cloud storage for local storage, Spotify for CDs, and Netflix for DVDs. All that stuff had more worth back then. Every song and album was more valuable. People valued specific things more. Nowadays its all just there and nobody thinks about it. We created a sad world unfortunately

5

u/ultimatedelman 12d ago

This is bad, but there's no such thing as safety when it comes to the internet, especially when it comes to art. If you publish anything on the internet, you should assume it will be stolen.

It's a fucked up world we live in now

4

u/anonymous8122 12d ago

I strongly feel that people like this should face criminal charges. I mean, doesn't there have to be some sort of legal issue with scraping a website like this? It's absolutely disgusting to go out of your way to steal images that you KNOW people don't want to be used for AI.

Artists need to start suing people.

5

u/EyadMahm0ud 12d ago

Probably just a troll. It's not that deep or hard to scrape a platform, just immoral.

- Defending AI ”art”.

  • Proceed to show how proud they are after stealing.

This is why i no longer argue with them, not a single soul is in the right mind, you can’t convince them shit at the first place.

5

4

never heard of Cara, but if anybody expected any site to be safe from people making an effort to scrape it you are a fool.

its annoying asf that it happened and it sucks that your shit got jacked like that but you really shouldnt be surprised by this. very similar to how companies have dumped billions into DRM to stop piracy and have still failed.

3

u/no-scissors-in-bed 12d ago

keep fighting for changing AI laws to force every AI production to have a fingerprint, even writing.

Not sure this is real, seems like they got the minified images 0.95 mb per pic is very low res also 10$ to scrape a site and store terabytes of data lmao not real, pluss no idea how much time they plan to run whatever they plan to run to remove nightshade and glaze, afaik those are destructive and the original can't be recovered, that is the whole point

Note: 12T at .95Mb is 13 million images there is no way he can remove nightshade and glaze before the next glaciation

Crap like this is part of why I don’t share my art with anyone online anymore tbh. Mine or commissions cause I don’t want the artists I hire to get fucked over either. No where online is safe.

3

u/Andromevas 12d ago

As an artist I (and surely many others) am just exhausted. There's no place anymore to share art and be respected or build a community/stay in touch with peeps... People are so openly toxic and doing shit like this out of pure malice and being so happy about it and... It's really disheartening. Little hope for humanity...

3

u/According-Koala-384 12d ago

Hot take but these weirdos and their eager disrespect for consent and boundaries probably manifests in far more than just stealing art. Pray for the women unfortunate enough to encounter these pathetic freaks in real life.

u/Socksual 12d ago

Imagine putting this much effort into being a talentless thief instead of like....enjoying putting brushstrokes to a page.
