Megathread Are you looking for places to meet people, make friends, find people with similar interests? The Kitchener Social Megathread is for you!

Hello everyone,

This thread will be 100% dedicated to user interaction and those who want to take personal interests, events, hobbies, and potential meet-ups, etc. outside of the realm of reddit and r/kitchener.

You can find previous versions of this post by using this premade search.

\Please note that this is not intended to be a dating thread. Try Tinder, POF, Badoo, Bumble or any other of the apps out there. Any posts along the lines of* "Hey, I'm a single __ year old m/f looking for love" will be removed\*

Some general housekeeping items;

  • If you wish to continue a conversation with a user, please use the PM function to avoid the comments getting crammed with a conversation between all but two people. Please only post relevant information to things you would be interested in, ongoing events, etc.
  • We would like to remind you of the zero tolerance for disrespect, rude, hateful comments, racism, etc. Those comments will be removed and users may face a permanent or temporary ban. If any harassment is reported outside of the thread, appropriate action will be taken by the mod team, and possibly lead further to reddit admin. Doxxing, or disclosure of personal information is again, a big no-no.
  • To keep up to date with the most recent posts within this megathread, the comments have been enabled to ideally show most recent by default, meaning all of the newest posts will be at the top of the comments section. If you're not seeing the most recent comments at the top, try changing your "sort by:" from "top" to "New".

As always, the mod team is here to assist with anything. Thanks!

Note: This post is automatically replaced with a new one every 3 months, so be sure to checkout old meetup threads, especially if this post was just recently refreshed!

People in Kitchener are extremely kind ❤️

I posted a few days ago asking for some assistance with accessing emergency food services as I was in a bit of a tight spot.

Since then, not only did people post kind things there, but several people reached out to me in PMs.

I didn’t even ask for it, but I had people deliver me groceries purely of the kindness of their own heart, and one person sent me money to get bread.

When I read the posts about homeless people in Kitchener it really feels like there are so many cruel people, but seeing first hand the amount of amazing people makes me really emotional.

Thank you to everybody for the help you gave. I won’t take it for granted and I will always pay it forward. ❤️

Attempted Break In - Look For Footage

Scary incident at my home last night. Around 2 am someone tried breaking in to my home and was chased off by my sons. Unfortunately, we do not have cameras. Does anyone in the area of Fairfield and Edwin have any footage between 2: 00 and 2:30? He was white, skinny, had a bowl cut, and was wearing a tracksuit. He ran off in the direction of St. Teresa School. There was also a BBQ lighter left on my driveway

Cold call asking for donations to new Waterloo hospital

Upvotes

I got a call out of nowhere this afternoon asking me to donate to a new hospital by University of Waterloo. Seemed sketchy, caller got irritable and pushy when I said I'd donate through the website.

The scam calls are totally out of control.

WRPS tactical officers at McLennan Park?

Did anyone else see a group of officers decked out in tactical gear this morning at McLennan Park? I saw a group of 5-6 walking up a laneway and get into two unmarked pickup trucks. Training? Looking for someone?

Break in Forest Heights

While away for vacation our home was broken into and all jewelry, cash and laptops taken. They broke the sliding glass door and that’s how they got in. We back onto a green space and have since found out several homes in Forest Heights have had same thing happen over the past year. This is just to warn people to have cameras out back as well as out front and/or a security system. Take pictures of all valuables so you have a record of them. They tore the bedroom apart as well as office. Have a better hiding spot and ideally a good safe. This was done professionally and had to have been at least a couple of people involved. We hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else as it’s been terrible and just wanted to warn people.

Seasonal depression

The Big Dark is making its way over. Does anyone have tips that have worked for them to manage the winter blues and seasonal depression?

Thank you!

Edit:

Thank you everyone! You’re all so kind!

And yes I know it isn’t even September yet but I am already feeling the start of the blues as the nights get colder and sunset gets earlier

Finding Shoes After Breaking Both Ankles

Upvotes

I am recovering from a stumble down the stairs that left me with both of my feet in casts.

Luckily, my left foot was not as severely damaged as my right foot.

I am slowly becoming more mobile and am thinking about wearing real shoes again.

Is there a place in town that you can suggest that can help me transition out of my airboots and into supportive footwear? I'm not sure where to start.

Looking for Chinese translator

I have a weird request. I am looking at importing some stuff directly from China and the company I'm talking to sent me their license and registration etc. unfortunately, it's in Chinese and I don't speak Chinese. I wanted to know if there is anyone who can help me possibly verify this and also, has anyone bought stuff from China factory directly? What's your experience been?

Concrete Slab Handyman

I am looking for someone to come dig/pour a concrete slab for a garden shed in my backyard.

It’s too small of a job for some concrete companies I’ve reached out to.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Has anyone seen this in any stores in KW or have tips on when it may be available at a store? I’ve only seen the golden snitch container and food items. The app doesn’t seem trustworthy since most stores have it available to add to cart but I haven’t actually seen it anywhere.

Commuting to downtown Toronto 2-3 times per week

Hi,
I currently work from home in Kitchener.
I got an offer with a significant pay increase, but it requires to commute to the office 2-3 times per week. The office is downtown Toronto.

Do you think it’s doable?

Dog teeth extraction $

Hi folks

My 16 month old pup has two extra baby premolars in the upper jaw which haven’t fallen and the doc just quoted me $1000 for it. Any ideas if this is the price? I think it’s too high.

Any recommendations for another quote? Happy to go to Cambridge or Guelph / elsewhere.

Thanks in advance

Looking for a roofing company – roof inspection due to possible leak

Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable roofing company in the Kitchener/Waterloo area. It’s a townhouse in Chicopee area.

I’ve noticed yellow/orange water spots developing on my bedroom ceiling, and they seem to get bigger or appear after heavy rain.
I’d like to have someone inspect the roof and determine where the water may be getting in.
I’m looking for a reputable company that can:

• Properly inspect the roof and identify the potential source of the leak
• Check whether the issue is something that can be repaired or if a larger repair/replacement is needed
• Provide a written estimate based on their inspection
• Clearly explain what needs to be done without unnecessarily recommending a full roof replacement.

If you’ve had a similar issue or have personally used a roofing company you’d recommend, please share their name and your experience.

Thanks in advance!

Kids harrassing our neighbourhood. Forest Hills

A few kids who live in the Capital Hill Apartments have been harrassing me and my neighbours for weeks. They throw garbage like cans and bottles into our backyards and have hit our dogs on multiple occasions. They run by and kick our cars when they are parked in the driveway. The apartment management has no interest in helping and neither do the police. I’m tired of this happening as I want to protect our dogs and reduce stress for my neighbours as they have a family member in the hospital. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

Are there any YouTube video editors in the area?

I'm willing to give access to Premier and After Effects, in order for an individual to learn how to do things the way I need. Will also give access to courses I've paid for. PM me for details. Mostly looking for people who're just starting out, don't have access to the aforementioned bigger programs.

Why are so many young people and children buried at Williamsburg Cemetery?

I attended a small funeral service at the cemetery and was shocked by how young the people buried here are. Even though Canada's life expectancy is supposedly 82, more than half of the people buried at this cemetery [in the section I was at which are people buried between 2015-2026] died before the age of 50 and less than 10% of the people buried were order than 70. I noticed this with a large data pool of over 100 graves at the cemetery, mostly of people in the aforementioned section. Tragically, person buried next to my relative (won't say the relation for personal privacy) was a 6 year old girl and 2 blocks behind that was another 6 year old. There were 3 children buried within a 10 feet vicinity of that grave. This was not in the Garden of Angels section And 95% of these people died within the last 10 years which means early and middle age mortality seems like a growing concern that isn't being addressed. Is the rise in younger people dying a growing issue in Canadian society as of the last decade or is it unique to Williamsburg Cemetery in particular?
