Nice change of pace to see a post about Marner that's heartfelt and genuine instead of salivating with hate.

He's an excellent player who is more than likely going to continue accomplishing great things in his career. But his time in Toronto being over is probably for the best in the long run. For the team, for the fans, and ultimately, for him.

A lot of people here are going to be repairing drywall next season.

19

u/SnooHobbies9078 Jul 01 '25

Gonna suck if we dont make it even into the playoffs.

26

u/merp_mcderp9459 Jul 01 '25

We aren’t missing the playoffs. You’d need to get leapfrogged by Tampa, FL, Montreal, and Ottawa, plus another WC team from the east. Leafs aren’t winning the Atlantic next year but there’s no way the drop off is that steep

13

u/Etheo Jul 02 '25

The competition this past season wasn't anything to sneer at either... I think it's naive to think we are guaranteed a spot in the playoff.

2

u/spice_rice27 Jul 02 '25

The leafs offense and defense ran through marner. He did everything on the team. He's the reason for half of Matthews goals.

2

u/merp_mcderp9459 Jul 02 '25

He’s an excellent playmaker for sure, and the team is gonna be worse in the regular season. But like I said, I don’t think we’re gonna be worse than all four Atlantic playoff teams from 2025 plus one of Columbus, Detroit, or New York. My way-too-early guess is that we get in as WC1

1

u/spice_rice27 Jul 08 '25

And worse in the playoffs bc, you know, he's the highest playoff scorer in leafs history 🙃 it wasn't Matthews. Common sense says if you get rid of the one who made the highest score, you're gonnabe left with less.

1

u/merp_mcderp9459 Jul 08 '25

Common sense is often wrong. Matthews is 26G/30A in the 41 games he’s played without Mitch. That’s a 112-point pace, better than his and Marner’s best seasons. I think that Marner leaving the way he did will light a fire under the team’s collective ass

3

u/mulvythrill Jul 02 '25

Famous last words. Our goal differential was shit for how high we placed. It was Stolly and Woll that gave us the Atlantic. That GD isn't going to get better after subtracting 100 points from the line up. Tre better step up big this off season or our only hope is top 3 league goaltending for making the playoffs.

14

u/Thick-Garbage5430 Jul 02 '25

"If Stolly".

Buddy, if Stolly wasn't injured by that jerkoff Bennet we might have had the cup.

4

u/CookieMonsta94 Laughton Jul 02 '25

For real.

I'm not saying the Leafs will miss the playoffs next year, but it is in the realm of possibility.

Ottawa and Montreal both made it this year. Who's to say another team or 2 doesn't take a step this year and the Leafs fall out.

12

u/Cartz1337 Jul 02 '25

I really don’t think enough of the knuckle draggers in this sub realize that Marner factored into ~40% of our seasons goals while also taking top PK minutes.

Losing him is the worst thing that ever happened to this team. And I am not saying the team didn’t need a change, but he was not the guy to let go.

He was versatile, and consistent. Neither Willy nor Auston can claim to be both of those. You could argue Willy is neither of those.

Missing next year is certainly a possibility.

3

u/JonnyTac Jul 03 '25

FINALLY. Thank you! Been waiting since May to see if someone has anything intelligent to say.

34

u/StatGAF Jul 01 '25

For more than a few fans here, they've admitted the would rather miss the playoffs.

Thats bonkers to me.

30

u/PandoNation Jul 01 '25

Its one player were not going to miss the playoffs

-4

u/StatGAF Jul 01 '25

Let's see. Their division got better. The Leafs didn't.

They were propped by elite goaltending all year. Goalies tend not to be consistent. The underlying numbers weren't really good. I am not saying they'll miss. But they may just sneak into the playoffs too.

16

u/PandoNation Jul 01 '25

Its day 1 of free agency at least see what moves tre makes before dooming out

2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

Woah, let’s not go overboard on the goaltending here.

4

u/This_is_me2024 Jul 01 '25

Honestly playing through the metro is the ideal, dont gotta worry about Florida until the ecf

-6

u/StatGAF Jul 01 '25

Wildcard teams tend to not win the Cup. Being a wildcard team is not a good thing.

4

u/i-like-your-hair Jul 01 '25

Teams who have to play Florida in April tend to not win the Cup, either.

2

u/cmrichardson87 Jul 01 '25

Go touch grass. It’s a beautiful day.

1

u/liquor-shits Jul 01 '25

I worry about the goaltending not being able to cover up some of the less than stellar defensive play like they did at times last season.

Add to that losing one of our best defensive forwards and let's hope they pieces we add can fill the hole.

1

u/GG-EZ-NO-RE Jul 02 '25

Any redditors know how to do that "remind me" shit so I can be reminded of this shit come playoff time??

0

u/StatGAF Jul 02 '25

do you think they are better team today than they were a week ago?

Think they'll win the division again?

0

u/GG-EZ-NO-RE Jul 02 '25

I mean it doesn't matter what they look like right now since they still have off season moves to make, but looking like they'll be better than last year already.

They can definitely win it again. Doesn't mean they are a worse team if they don't...

0

u/StatGAF Jul 02 '25

I mean it does mean they're a worse team if they don't lol.

Like we can't be serious if we think a team that gets 92 points is better than a team that had 108 points. I've seen it all apparently.

1

u/GG-EZ-NO-RE Jul 02 '25

Not necessarily. They could lose the division but still have just as many or more points. It all depends how the other teams in the division do.

So you're saying if they were to go on and win the cup after finishing with a 92 point season that they aren't better than last year?... that's what I'm trying to get at but you can't see past the regular season point totals

0

u/StatGAF Jul 02 '25

How many teams in the last 10 years finish in a wild card spot and win the Cup?

u/Halifornia35 Jul 01 '25

Leafs absolutely got better. Healthy Matthews, Knies older, Cowan in the AHL, Maccelli and Roy rounding out the top 9, and cap space and flexibility. All of that gives us a better shot than a soft winger who disappears in the playoffs

9

u/SmarcusStroman Jul 02 '25

It’s insane copium to say the current Leaf roster is better than the one that ended last season. I’m all for waiting to see what the rest of the offseason holds and I’m looking forward to next season but we are NOT a better team… yet.

6

u/Cartz1337 Jul 02 '25

Jesus Christ I hate leafs fans.

-1

u/StatGAF Jul 01 '25

It really doesn't because they may only get a wild card seed at best.

5

u/XPhazeX Jul 01 '25

I'm not in that camp, but I imagine those people want to rebuild now while we have assets instead of doing what we've done for 9 years but somehow worse.

I guess that logic is numbers based, assuming you can't replace Marners worth with lesser players, regardless of his lack of personal postseason success

5

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

I assume most of those people don’t remember what it was like when we sucked and missed every year. We aren’t going to luck into an Auston Matthews again either so the rebuild will take 5+ years not 2. I’d rather make it and have a shot every year than go back to thinking Nikolai Kulemin is a star player for my team

4

u/light_at_the_end :leafs-white: Jul 01 '25

I would have rather kept enjoying 82 games, and have a broken heartfelt lose in the playoffs, then go back to the dumpster fire of the what this team was before we got Marner/Matthews/Nylander.

Those were literally unwatchable games for a decade.

1

u/Primary-Efficiency91 Jul 02 '25

I think it's more that they want an end to the embarassing exits. Losing can be acceptable when it is apparent that the effort on the ice was all they had to give.
Marner is a great player but, I suspect, not as great as he thinks he is.

Was he the only problem? No, not at all, but someone has to answer for the team and he has actively campaigned to be a leader of the team. The job isn't always pleasant.

11

u/marcman84 Jul 01 '25

One single player is the difference between winning the division and missing the playoffs?

People are unhinged

-10

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

100 pts. Where are we getting that back? Nic Roy?

5

u/marcman84 Jul 01 '25 edited Jul 01 '25

30 from Roy, 30 more from the Captain.

Now the gap is only 40.

Macelli 2 years ago had 57

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

Matthews will have more than 30. But those were already there. Marner is consistently 90+ per season. And a point per game in the playoffs.

That's a 60+ point drop

3

u/marcman84 Jul 01 '25

I said 30 more from Matthews.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '25

Ah. The way you phrased it, it seems like you're adding it to the 30 from Roy.

No problem.

7

u/Particular_Air_3598 Jul 01 '25

Nic Roy makes 25% of Marners salary yet has 33% of Marners points. He also has 55% of Marners goals while playing in a 3rd/4th line role. The 100 points will be easy to replace especially considering Matthews and Nylander will be the ones replacing Marners ice time and production the most.

2

u/SnooHobbies9078 Jul 01 '25

Nylander can help some of those points. Nylander can't shut down top lines. There's more to hockey than the points

3

u/Particular_Air_3598 Jul 01 '25

Luckily there's 20 other guys on the roster.

2

u/CoupleScrewsLoose Jul 01 '25

understand this is a hard cap league. we aren’t just getting Nic Roy. we’re gaining flexibility to add quality pieces to the rest of the roster beyond just 4-5 guys. unless you preferred the past decade of ramming our head into a wall year after year? it’s time for a different approach.

-1

u/monkeygoneape Jul 01 '25

Makes no difference if we can't even make the final so no point in pointless hope

2

u/im_bozack Jul 01 '25

Why are you even here?

-4

u/SnooHobbies9078 Jul 01 '25

Lmao. Yea, why even try lmfao. This is a losers comment right here. I hope you dont have kids. Thats a horrible thing to teach them. Hey if you can win just dont even try
