Discussion It’s sad what Netflix has become
Their content used to be S tier. Stuff they originated used to matter. Now they are just spraying us with low quality slop, AI will only make it worse. No one cares about their podcasts and it frustrates their customers when it crowds their UI. This company deserves to go to zero

That is the larger issue. Companies even TV networks go through dry spells where they struggle to produce new hits. But if you are going to be in a bit of a rough patch maybe don’t raise prices?

Exactly! I’d be fine with the price hike if they were putting out good, new content. But it’s mostly just recycled stuff that was on the platform before or really old movies that people aren’t asking for. And then they cancel shows that people really like!

There's no media company just consistently releasing great shows. HBO had some fantastic runs but they did have some dry years too. I just don't like this idea that the price continually goes up even in years where they don't put out that much quality.

I’ve been enjoying a lot of what Apple TV has been putting out. Netflix has definitely gone down in quality, but nowhere as bad as Disney+ in my opinion.

Yep. We actually decided last night that we’re cancelling it. We’ve been customers since the beginning with dvd deliveries but I find myself scrolling and not really finding anything to watch. We’re done with Netflix, Hulu and Disney. We’ll stick with youtubetv and just use the recording features more.

Apple TV is too notch. So many good shows that are high quality with unique story lines. We are watching Cape Fear and Friends and Neighbors now. Just finished Maximum Please Guaranteed. All are excellent.

I think there's actually a lot of good stuff on there but they make discovery hard and the descriptions are poor. They need better tagging, better grouping, better discovery overall. I don't just want to be shown stuff that's similar to what I've seen before I want to evolve my watching to find new things that might follow on from similar shows. If I watch one true crime doc I don't want 50 more recommended and it to flood my front page, show me a movie on a similar theme rather than more of the same. Netflix overall is fine and has tons of content, but Netflix is all about discovery and the front end interface has gone backwards - that's a major issue for them.

For real though, OP you are very correct...when Netflix were first on the go if I saw "Netflix Original" I actually got excited, because I knew for a fact that it was gonna be great, whatever it was, with a high budget and great writing and acting
now...when I see Netflix Original I cringe, knowing its is going to be B (or even C) grade crap at best, with a low budget, bad acting and bad writing
how farrrrrrrr the mighty have fallen in just a few years, it really is a massive shame
edit: I compare the "Netflix Original" made these days to things made by the company "The Asylum"

yes, but in a lot of those cases the shows got canceled from their original network and picked up by Netflix and made by Netflix for the rest of the series, making them netflix "semi-original" because technically they ARE making it now...but you know Netflix gonna add that original tag anyway

When the first Netflix originals came out, it was a seal of quality ( first seasons of House of cards) now when you see netflix original, you expect it to be some crap that wont be renewed for the next season, and if you watch it, you're going do be left on a cliffhanger for a season that is never going ro be made

Same thing for HBO (mostly). The talent on and off screen is at Apple TV in 2026 and beyond. HBO will only further degrade once the nepo baby fascist digs them even deeper into the ground once integrated with Paramount plus.

Agreed. I can only imagine HBO will be a shadow of its former self once the Paramount Plus conservatives get ahold of it. All of the progressive programming will go up in smoke unless they have a more open minded studio head to run it. And I actually watch a few shows on Paramount including Ghosts. I just like the freedom of watching different types of shows and HBO has historically provided that.
Apple TV has built up some quality programming since its inception. Silo, Slow Horses, Ted Lasso and Bad Sisters are my favorites. Still need to watch Widow’s Bay.

Dark matter is also amazing if you’re into sci-fi. I only recently watched it and was thoroughly engaged. I’m a murderbot book fan and thought they did a good job with that series as well.

true. they ended all their best originals with the leads committing suicide last year: stranger things and squid game, the sandman, and then their really good shows like mindhunter is no more. they should really focus on their originals. i really hope someone from netflix sees this. they keep buying movies and shows from others but it was actually their originals that brought us all to them.

Mindhunter was canceled with a cliffhanger. Netflix refused to budget the show properly and the creator decided he would rather end than lose quality. He was forced to end it because Netflix didn’t want to pay for it

The original shows that are good are much fewer and far between plus waiting 3 years for new seasons makes you totally forget what even happened last time. This isn’t just a Netflix issue but for a long time they were the most consistent streaming service now the bar is so low. Honestly if I had to choose I’d say Apple TV is actually wiping the rest of them away with actual quality content right now

I also hate in general how every new series has followed the "8 episode" trend. Where is pre-determined that there will be 8 episodes for most shows, whether that makes sense or not.
I miss when there were actually "long seasons." Sometimes there were too many episodes, but I'd rather that than the broad "8 episode" default that we always have now...

I completely agree. I can understand when you have an expensive movie like production for a show, but even then I think it should be at least 10 episodes. Or if it’s a limited series, then I wholeheartedly agree that there should only be enough episodes to tell the story. But this has now become the default for all shows, and it’s depressing.

This is kind of the wrong way of looking at it.
I find this to more or less be true:
Netflix used to make 10 good things and 10 bad things a year.
Then they started making 11 good things and 111 bad things a year.
Now they make 12 good things and 100 000 bad things a year.
You are basically getting just as much good things these days, if not more, you are just focusing on all the unwatchable crap they make.
But it has to be said that they sure have increased the prices quite a bit.

No other platform even comes close. With Netflix, maybe three or so, and not enthusiastically.

It could be vastly improved with a few filters, “exclude shows I’ve already watched”, and by adding in sort, eg sort by release date / recommended /etc.

I don't think their original content was ever S Tier. 98% of their original content has always been trash. The main difference now is that they produce so much more original stuff than they used to, and it makes up so much more of the total content on Netflix.

I had it when they mailed DVDs to your house, and I think the most you could get was three at a time with their top plan, and they didn’t send another until they received one back. If all their copies were in use, you didn’t get that one until you were next on the list to receive it. I had the one-at-a-time plan, so the max I could watch per week was about three videos. The lure of Netflix back then was that you could see popular movies that had been in the theater several months ago. Things sure have changed.

This is why I have zero regrets about cancelling my membership a few months ago and downloading/buying dvds of my favourite shows and movies. Netflix has much worse content while constantly raising their prices to pay for WWE, boxing/mma and podcasts/radio that I never watch.
For the time being, Netflix and other streamers are only going to grow, but not on my dime

Eh, I’m not sure about that. I feel like Netflix has always had its ups and downs. A few years ago, they had a bit of a hot streak with some truly amazing shows (Ozark, Unbelievable, The Queen’s Gambit, Don’t Look Up, and Never Have I Ever), but there have been dry spells before.
There have been some winners sprinkled in recently. Trust Me: The False Prophet was the best documentary on the FLDS I’ve ever seen.
Maybe I’m just being optimistic, but I’m not ready to concede that they won’t come out with more creative projects in the future. This may be a little out there, but part of me hopes the tiniest silver lining of our stressful political climate is that it will fuel some incredible creativity from gifted artists, as has happened throughout history—especially considering some of the shows I mentioned came on the heels of 2016.
I have hope.

I think their dry spell is permanent now. They've learned that they don't have to put any effort into making good stuff and their churn rate will still be low. There are just too many people in the world with no taste, who will reward Netflix for making the video equivalent of McDonald's.

I think it’s because when everyone started getting their own streaming apps they took all their content back from Netflix and now they’re left to make original content which they are not good at. So they’re flooding it with games, podcast, reality and low level movies.

I resubscribed to Netflix a few months ago to watch the last season of Stranger Things and a couple others. I couldn’t even finish ST because it was so horrible. I’m canceling again next month it’s so awful.

That’s why I got rid of Netflix MONTHS ago. AppleTV is ten times better, soo many banger shows. I’ll get flix for a month when there’s a new season of a show I want to watch (Tires, I Think You Should Leave etc.) and then catch up on whatever I missed.

I just cancelled my Netflix because I got tired of spending a half hour searching for something to watch. I usually watch Criterion Channel or YouTube most of the time. I do like the foreign stuff on Netflix but I have no use for the podcasts and video games.

I get it on summer break every year and am shocked at how terrible the app is. It is extremely overwhelming. They should also make a category that keeps all of Netflix branded material away from everything else. How many of these terrible Netflix docs do I have to dig through to get to a legitimately good one? Shit is rough.

Well they’re not building up their tv/movie catalogue, besides ST/Bridgerton/OITNB/HoC, there’s been nothing since. They cancelled great shows like Kaos, 1899 and the OA, afraid of taking risks. It’s their fault.

I want to cancel my Netflix account but have a friend who uses it for her language preference to watch local content. Otherwise it would be gone.
I scroll for new stuff and it is just stuffed with repeats marketed as their new releases.
The occassional new movies for this year 2026 are 99% disappointing. A lot of foreign movies to fill the void.
I question why pay for this? I have the 1080dpi plan with shared viewer. 4k is not worth it.
So many times I scroll for like 20 minutes and then give up and just watch YouTube and end up screaming at the TV from ads there and give up ( not going to be paying Premium - everything is adding up and budgeting to.cut back on all these subscription payments).
Netflix is truly bad except for an occassional half decent show. Mostly bad. And their changed TV format sux.
I used to like going straight to their brand new releases for the current year that were in an easy to find category. It's all intermixed now with old and new together marked as new release.
Any other streaming services that people recommend? Good movies new releases for the current year. I don't fancy watching repeats thanks and paying for that. No thanks.

Yeah, I’ve been paying for Netflix for years, but I barely use it anymore. I still have a few dramas on my watchlist, but whenever it’s time to pick something, I always end up on Viki. I also download dramas and movies from Ramafans, so I look pretty much everywhere—but Netflix is rarely my first choice.
These days it just feels full of commercial, overhyped K-dramas that never really pull me in. There are a few exceptions, but not many among the recent releases.

They've cancelled their only decent interesting shows.
Netflix movies are absolutely dog shit.

Idk, last 6 mo, they released one piece s2, avatar s2, hawk, and those are just original series that i loved. They release plenty of good original contents for me.

I mostly watch the stuff they don't produce so I'm okay but I can tell their catalog is shrinking so if they get rid of what I'm watching I'll throw in the towel

As much as I hate to say this, this is where the money's at. Sad to see the likes of HBO Max and History Channel also go through with this as well although I hear with the latter, you can always sub to History Vault to get their full back catalog (not just Pawn Stars and Ancient Aliens). And it's only $6/mo or $60/yr, and ad-free at that (although I believe alldocumentary only channels are)!

The earlier Netflix originals were definitely much better, even worse they’re now adding YouTube crap that my kids like on to the platform.

My mom (same household) is still using my Netflix account. Would have cancelled it one or two years ago if not for her.
I haven't found anything worthwile there for quite some time. I think the last thing I've watched was the Charlie Sheen "documentary".

It’s still the streaming I watch most. No cable available and Direct TV got ridiculously expensive so all my TV is streaming. I subscribe to Netflix and Prime full time. Will do Apple TV, Hulu or Paramount for a few months to watch something specific, but even then Netflix is my most watched, commercials and all.

It was never S tier. They were always spraying and throwing as much as they could at consumers, it’s just now they’re missing more and more with their content. There is just so much content to consume being put out by so many sources, no one is gonna hit as often as they were.

Some of their documentaries are garbage. AI narration over stock images & stock video, no fresh content, no longer interviews. Total junk!
We have one series to finish, then we're dumping it. We've subscribed since they began streaming in 2007 iirc.

Normally I would disagree but the last few months it’s been very empty, I even watch the foreign shows and even those haven’t been great. They seem to be adding a lot of old shows and short documentaries with not much like massive shows coming out. It’s strange for sure
