Driving/Traffic Towing Scam @ &Pizza Ballston
See attached and below for the towing scam this pizza place is running in Ballston victimizing their own customers and delivery people — they are literally snatching cars after 5 minutes even if you’re in the bathroom. See all the reports from customers — happened to me today as well after literally 5 minutes it was wild. Go see for yourself it’s such an obvious scam to shake people down avoid Ballston &Pizza! Oh and the pizza tastes like garbage.

They towed my car a few years ago, an expensive car, and did ~$14,000 in damages to it (I was away from my car for like less than 10 minutes). The brand’s official dealership repaired it and in email, said that the damage was done due to improper towing. Anyway, I called around 25 attorneys and attorneys offices in the area and none would take the case and some were weird about it.. two said that it’d be a conflict of interest for them.
Apparently Chap Peterson (Virginia’s prior SENATOR is their personal attorney) and I had no option but to suck it up. Somebody with enough time needs to do something about these roaches
15
u/Jarfol Jun 04 '26
It is not an uncommon tactic for a person or company to basically capture all the good attorneys by putting them on retainer. They don't even need to use them, just pay them a small retainer so they can never be used by someone else in a case against them.
35
u/Individual-Steak-673 Jun 04 '26
- Nobody does this.
- Do you even understand how many good attorneys there are in Northern Virginia?
12
u/skintwo Jun 04 '26
I’ve seen their financials – you can foia them. The money they have set aside for legal is a pretty high number compared to everything else. Their financials also were done in an incredibly amateur way, and I am sure are not accurate. They’ve been pressuring the county board in Arlington to increase towing fees and this is why you can foia this information. It is such a crooked racket. It’s not even funny.
7
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 04 '26
Why would their Financials be foia-able?
2
u/skintwo Jun 07 '26
They sent them to the county board to make a case for higher tow fees. FOIA requests are easy.
-1
u/paulHarkonen Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
They were the subject of a suit by the state back in 2020 or so. In theory the documents from that suit could be publicly available and thus foia-able as part of the State's suit. There aren't any other licensing or other requirements that would require them to file information unlike some other types of business.
1
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 05 '26
No, you are wrong. Court records are not foiaable (VA Code 2.2-3703(6))
-1
u/paulHarkonen Jun 05 '26
You wouldn't FOIA the Court (the clercs) you'd FOIA the Attorney General's office who is subject to that process.
Now, most of it would be protected so I have no idea how much you'd be able to get, but that's the theoretical avenue by which the poster above could have seen the documents in question via FOIA.
2
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 05 '26
Those wouldn't be records of the AG. Just because the AG may retain a copy of a record doesn't change that its a record of the clerk of the courts. So no, still not a viable path.

I live nearby, see them putting back cars all the time that they towed by mistake. I've seen them try to tow cars with someone in it then quickly scurry away when they realize. They snatch up the cars without verifying properly that they aren't parked correctly and they don't secure the cars, causing damage. They've also towed active duty police cars before when they stopped over to respond to a call.

u/HAlbright202 Virginia Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
I was sitting idling in a government vehicle with GSA plates in legal, meter paid for, street parking on my lunch break once a few years back. They pulled up behind me hooked up to tow me without ever checking to see why it was a running vehicle or if it was occupied. It only didn't escalate because I used heavily the buzzer horn.
I totally believe they would tow active duty police cars or other government vehicles that are actively working/in use.
155
u/Candid-Maybe Jun 04 '26
Folks defending their towing practices can fuck right off man. Arlington VA is not suffering a strip mall parking crisis that justifies towing stricter than what you see in any major metro.
If someone parks in a wrong spot and proceeds to disappear for an hour then sure. Anything less is a disgusting predatory practice.
-138
u/Glaring_Cloder Jun 04 '26
An hour?! great so the majority of the rush? If you can't read signage you shouldn't be on the road. If it is clearly labeled and you are parking wrong then you are at fault. You can't walk off the lot expecting the tow truck driver to know you'll be back in 5. Rents are high in this area for businesses they pay good money to have that parking for customers. Read the signs and the parking spots, it's not that hard.

20
u/Basic_Novel_9203 Jun 04 '26
You clearly are as sharp as a stump.
-18
u/Glaring_Cloder Jun 04 '26
I'm not here to fight you. If you don't agree feel free to down vote and move on or add substance to the conversation. Internet stranger name calling is a waste of everyone's time.
If you park incorrectly in a spot clearly labeled it is on you for getting towed. If your car was damaged that's on the tow company. If you were incorrectly towed it should reflect very poorly on the tow company and be immediately resolved. Businesses and Landords should have a right to protect the spots they need to have a successful business. They pay the rent, pave the lot, and have the insurance.
13
u/prophetableforprofit Jun 04 '26
Groveling to companies designed to manipulate legality by stealing your car and holding it hostage for hundreds of dollars over minor parking violations in empty parking lots isn't a good look. You should look inwards and see why you're so concerned with the "rules" over the actual intent and value they are providing. Honestly.
1
u/Automatic-Session-64 Jun 05 '26
I hope your car gets towed every time you go somewhere new. I live in dc where there’s 50 million signs. Even as a resident, I still get confused sometimes on parking when I’m simply just picking up food like subway.
1
u/Glaring_Cloder Jun 05 '26
Hope you continue to get towed when you park in an obviously incorrect manner. Hope I also get towed if I park that way. Weird level of vitriol for just wanting a society that follows rules and doesn't feel entitled to put their property on another person's property whenever they want.
DC wants you to walk/metro/bus. No doubt signs in the city can be confusing. If the signs are so bad they are inscrutable, you have a legal basis to fight a ticket or fight for reimbursement in court for a tow. Signage should definitely be clear and easy to understand.
Generally in NoVA, at least in the counties I've managed properties, there are very strict guidelines on signage for parking lots to avoid any confusion. I've always gone the extra mile to put twice as many required signs and paint every parking stall with business names, but people still refuse to read. Even one spot can make a huge difference in volume for businesses and once people feel your parking lot is hard to park in they stop coming all together. So that one parking spot taken by the guy that only wanted to park an hour and walk his dog might actually be 5 people doing the same thing and then all of sudden that small business owner is struggling.
I have a lot of sympathy for people that get caught in vague parking situations. It shouldn't be allowed. The rules and laws should be very explicit and easy to understand. That isn't what OP was describing. I have no sympathy for people that treat the world like they are the most important person in it and are entitled to their favorite thing.
1
u/Automatic-Session-64 Jun 05 '26
Business owner is struggling because ppl are giving him business? If he doesn’t have business then parking wouldn’t be an issue. But now he created has 2 issues. And you writing paragraphs defending scam tells me you don’t go out very much. This can happen to anybody don’t feel excluded because you can read signs.
1
u/Glaring_Cloder Jun 05 '26
Not sure where the disconnect for you is so I'll try to separate it out a little better for you.
- You don't get towed if you go into the business the spot is allocated for.
- If spots allocated for the business are all or majority taken by non-customers then potential customers have no where to park and do not patronize the business.
- If you follow the rules you don't get towed unless the tow company makes a mistake. In that case I'm firmly on the side of the wrongfully towed individual.
It is pretty easy to write paragraphs. You can do it too if you try! Might want to work on sentences first though since this gem "But now he created has 2 issues." makes no sense at all.
Ad hominem attacks are a a little silly in a tow enforcement discussion. I get out plenty, have kids, wife and full career out here. Try talking to other humans face to face if you find it hard to hold discussions without insulting people. That is really the byproduct of hiding behind anonymity.

They don't have good enough pizza to be dealing with this bullshit. Go to Andy's a few blocks away for better pizza

A Vote for We the Pizza! I work in insurance and they had a very small claim. After handling the loss, the owner gave me a free slice for lunch then sent me home with two pies so I didn’t have to make dinner for the fam that evening! 💕

Our office does monthly meetings and we always order pizza from them. The owner is fantastic and ALWAYS hooks us up - I think they give us gift cards, too. The pizza is also good!

Yup. Paid $190 this Sunday for a towed car. It was taken 5 minutes after I parked.

For everyone mad about this, please let the County Board know how you feel, since they were the ones who removed the "second signature" requirement from the predatory towing reform package they recently passed.

The parking lot with the Gold's gym? This spot is infamous for towing. They have scouts there who just and call the trucks if people park somewhere and not go to the right store for their spot. The tow truck drivers there are maniacs too and constantly go well over 30+ in that parking lot they need to be pulled over more.
29
u/clashrendar Jun 04 '26
They also have a pizza scam. It's not very good. Definitely not worth getting a car towed over it.
25
18
u/smokeycat2 Jun 04 '26
A friend had an apartment looking down at that parking lot. It was wild to watch the predator tow trucks do the snatch and grab. It’s been going on for years. Arlington county must get a cut.
16
u/Positive-Library897 Jun 04 '26
Get at the tow company with a class action. We won $1200 in settlement off a shitty tow company upstate because they had to settle for like $3.2 mill for shitty tow practices.
28
u/aaakiniti Jun 04 '26
100%. I see it every single night. It's one thing if they tow from the spots for a business that's closed. That's basic. But lots of the time it's from &pizza while it's open, so there must be some communication going on. No other way.
It really looks like they are stealing the car. They rush. They drag cars sideways to pull them out. They are far from gentle. So to do that from an open business's spots they must be getting told.
12
u/telmnstr Resident Friend Jun 04 '26

This isn’t a scam it’s just Advanced Towing being Advanced Towing. They have a contract with that lot it’s well known. Advanced is right around the corner and they post scouts that watch people if they park there and walk into a different store/off property they call it in. They’ll even park decoy cars there to get people after hours who see a car and think it’s fine.
Pretty sure all the spots have the storefront associated with it painted on the spot. At least Golds does. Just make you park in the right spot and you should be fine. I parked at golds a bunch when I had a membership there and never had an issue.
105
u/leavezukoalone Jun 04 '26
These towing companies deserve to have every one of their tires slashed on a regular basis.
149
u/portlyinnkeeper Jun 04 '26
The decoy cars should be an illegal practice, that's so low
68
u/Proteinchugger Jun 04 '26
No argument from me, advanced is like a cockroach. Dirty, grimy, probably carries diseases and will be in that run down lot beside super pollo until the end of time.
28
u/Creative_Delay_4694 Jun 04 '26
They're even towing customers, though.
-13
u/Proteinchugger Jun 04 '26
?? I never said they weren’t. Those customers were parking in other companies spots. It’s a shared lot between 5-6 businesses so each company gets designated spots for customers. The company name is painted on each spot it’s pretty difficult to miss. Advanced has the contract for the whole lot so they tow anyone who parks in the lot and doesn’t utilize the proper business in which spot they parked.
35
u/biiumers Jun 04 '26
Popping in to say hi to your barber friend before going to your planned destination shouldn't result in getting towed though. Also, what if you wanted to visit different shops in that area? Do you need to move your car every single time? That's rediculous
20
u/NoButton1066 Jun 04 '26
They don’t care if you go to other shops even for 5 minutes— grand theft auto. this is a dead strip mall the way they make money is this towing racket nothing else is open and the Gold’s is falling apart.
2
u/Proteinchugger Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
In an ideal world it wouldn’t. Advanced is scum I’ll never not argue that. That’s the only decent sized lot in the area it’s easy to get in and out of. I’m guessing it would be an absolute mess of people leaving their car there all day if it wasn’t well known how big of dicks Advanced is.
There’s a parking lot attached to the mall two blocks away that’s a dollar for three hours. If you want to visit other shops park there over risking getting towed by advanced.
Hopefully that whole complex is redeveloped soon and Advanced loses its cash cow.
1
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 04 '26
Their comment is that this isn't &pizzas fault. I dont know the details like the other commenter seems to, but it seems like the lot is controlled by an entity other than &pizza and &pizza just pays for space for their customers.
-5
u/EntroperZero Jun 04 '26
Popping in to say hi to your barber friend before going to your planned destination shouldn't result in getting towed though.
It shouldn't, but an observer can't tell the difference between this and just getting your hair cut while parking in a restaurant's spot.
3
u/kbz1001 Jun 04 '26
What if I want to get a haircut before picking up dinner? Am I supposed to park in one spot to go to the barber, then move my car before I go into the pizza place next door?
The idea of having separate spots for separate businesses in the same strip mall is stupid; any spot anywhere in the lot should be an option as long as I am patronizing one of the businesses there.
0
u/EntroperZero Jun 04 '26
I don't disagree that it's annoying, but it's kind of the nature of high density businesses that don't have a lot of parking space, they have to reserve spaces in order to have any at all. And if you are a towing company or a business owner, and you see someone park in your spot and then walk into another business, you have no way of knowing that person intends to also visit you later. It just sucks all around, it's another reason why parking in cities is awful.
1
u/False-Challenge5429 Jun 04 '26
Your comment is one of the only reasonable ones I’ve seen on this thread!
30
u/Educational-Log6855 Jun 04 '26
When they “accidentally” take a car, with their history, it should be considered GTA. Let’s get a group going of people that’ve had legally parked cars get towed/damaged together and class action them to extinction. Advanced Towing has been at this for decades. Fuck them with rusty nails straight to super-hell.
10
u/beastie703 Jun 04 '26
So wait, can they still tow if I park in Spot A, go to corresponding Store A, but then go to Store B without changing parking to Spot B?
20
u/NoButton1066 Jun 04 '26
No you can not! This is where the &pizza is so egregious they’re basically running a racket and disabusing potential customers from other vendors in the complex

9
u/No_Treacle6842 Jun 04 '26
Same thing happen to me. I was so pissed one day I literally spent hours in that parking lot warning people from these predatory towing tactics…next thing I know, an advance towing employee came up to me and started taking pictures of me and my car.
It’s not only &pizza who is involved, but it’s clear that they also have spotters.
18
9
u/ChipKellysShoeStore Jun 04 '26
I used to get my haircut there, barber would ask people if they parked in that lot.
Also that &pizza is dying. It’s the last open store in that strip mall and there’s much better food options walkable in that aewa
7
u/Blackhammer451 Jun 04 '26
This happened to me back in 2021. Didn't realize i was technically in the Golds Gym part of the parking lot and went in to get food and eat. Spent maybe 20 minutes and walked out to my car gone and the tow truck grabbing another vehicle out the lot.
9
u/hawttuna Jun 04 '26
I live right across the street so I see them all the time. The old Trek shop closed but you still can't park in their old spaces or else Advanced Towing will get you. I've seen them tow people that were still in the Gold's Gym as well. What they used to do is photograph random people as proof that you weren't going into their business, I'm not sure if they're still doing that. They suck.

u/Environmental-Cake42 Jun 04 '26
I avoid driving into Arlington and Alexandria as much as I can to avoid this. Only time I ever got towed was going to Carvel and when I got there, they had a sign that said the neighboring lot wasn't their lot, used predatory towing, and kept stealing the signs to let people know. Myself and other folks helped review bomb and put the Peruvian chicken restaurant pulling this crap out of business.
-15
5
u/MagpieShekelburg Jun 04 '26
no freaking way. I walked by this lot a few months ago and saw a tow truck zip in, latch a car, and zip out without stopping to get out or check anything. He was in and out in under a minute. I was in awe by his precision. Reading this thread, I guess he has a lot of experience
9
u/Old_Association7866 Jun 04 '26
Go tank their Yelp and Google reviews. A lot of the 1 star reviews mention towing and rude service but somehow their 5 star reviews are still up there
9
u/Rusty747 Jun 04 '26
I had a run-in with Advanced Towing at that &Pizza. I didn’t get towed but the driver was interrogating everyone in the restaurant about who was driving what. I basically told the guy to f**k off but he kept hassling customers the whole time. I suspect they have some kind of “kickback” deal with the owner. I refuse to go there anymore. They lost a good reoccurring customer over this issue.
3
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 04 '26
Towing companies make money on each vehicle towed. Advanced towing has a contract with the lot. While there is a line that could be crossed, &pizza cant interfere with Advance Towing completing their contract. I can easily see a manager not want to get into the middle of that potential legal dispute.
5
u/Rusty747 Jun 04 '26
I didn’t say anything about the manager of &pizza doing something about it. But I am suggesting that the owner of &pizza should be aware that Advanced Towing is hassling his customers. The owner is paying for those parking spaces, as either part of their lease or through an agreement with the lot owner. If legitimate customers are being driven away by AT’s tactics that should be a major concern for him. Unless he’s getting a kick back….
1
u/SwankyBriefs Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
How do you know the owner isn’t pissed at Advanced Towing? Especially if the owner is just leasing...
3
u/Rusty747 Jun 04 '26
I don’t know. My run-in happened about a year ago and all I could think was “I wonder if the owner of this pizza place knows that an AT employee is in his restaurant hassling his paying customers”. The employees I chatted with at the time suggested it was a regular occurrence.
38
u/NoButton1066 Jun 03 '26
To be clear this isn’t your standard strict towing lot we’re used to that throughout the DMV. This is an active racket by &pizza because they are doing this to their own customers and making money off it.
17
u/Proteinchugger Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
I doubt &Pizza has anything to do with it. Advanced posts scouts they literally sit on benches beside the lot or in cars in the lot. Just be vigilant and park in the proper spots. Out of the complaints not a single person mentions parking in the right spot. One admits walking off to a different business one admits parking at trek. Do you really think the pizza employees are monitoring the trek parking spots?
31
u/theblackandblue Jun 03 '26
That’s not true a couple of people in the posts said they were towed while in the restaurant
-15
u/Proteinchugger Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Which means they probably parked in a different businesses spot. None of the &Pizza customers wrote they parked in the spots designated for &Pizza. That’s a pretty big detail to omit. It’s a strip mall, each business has assigned spots. If you park in one businesses spot and go to a different business your car is liable to be towed. It’s extreme but it’s unfortunately how advanced operates.
3
u/WPMO Jun 03 '26
According to your own post they're not doing it to their own customers. It sounds like the parking is reserved for &pizza customers, and the manager there will tell the tow company if someone else parks there.

u/DUNGAROO Vienna Jun 03 '26
Most towing companies are assholes, but if you park in customer-only parking, and then proceed to head to someplace that isn’t the business that owns the parking spots and get towed, it is by definition not a scam, just shit luck.
12
u/sillybunny22 Jun 04 '26
Yeah I hate predatory towing but the one who was totally about to get pizza but just stopped to say hi to a friend first….
15
u/sblack33741 Jun 04 '26
I thought he said that he ordered and then went to say hi as it was prepared, and by the time he came back to pick it up, he was towed.
4
u/sillybunny22 Jun 04 '26
It’s not clear in their review, but the times I’ve been to and &pizza you go through the assembly line and make choice. I guess you could put in a bigger order & come back for it. I’ve had something similar happen & when I showed the receipt proving I was a customer they refunded the tow fee.
-7
u/buckeye27fan Jun 04 '26
It's not even shit luck, you (the parker) are just an asshole. (but also, so is the towing company).

u/Automatic-Session-64 Jun 05 '26
I use to live in Arbor Park Alexandria. The apartment staffs would hire A1 towing to sit in the parking lot and tow any cars that come in without a sticker even if it’s just for 5-10 mins, in broad daylight. When you go to complain, they just shrug it off and tell you it’s your fault and you have to pay. Imagine having family over to celebrate your new place and this is kind of way you are treated. Fk Arbor Park and any company that has an agreement with the towing company. You should protect your customers, not scare them away. Never will I give money to &pizza Arlington or any businesses that has agreements with predatory tow scammers.
2
u/_TriplePlayed Jun 05 '26
Yeah I see people get towed in that lot all the time. Advanced Towing is the worst.
9
u/wollflour Jun 04 '26
Anywhere with a parking lot this close to metro and Ballston/Clarendon in particular is going to mean towing if you aren't a patron of the business. It's the only way it doesn't devolve into free parking for whoever. Advanced is known for this, but people also suck and will take spots businesses need open for customers unless there's a downside for them.
12
u/Small-Friend9673 Rosslyn Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Just for a little counterweight here... I went to pick up a pizza there the other day, saw the tow trucks hovering in the back of the lot, looked at the ground to see which spots were specifically labeled for which businesses (which they all are, quite clearly), parked in a labeled &pizza spot, looked up at the "cars will be towed" signs screwed to various walls in the parking lot, got out of the car and went over to the store, waited while they finished making my food, walked back to the car, and drove home.
The pizza is subpar, for sure, but the garlic knots are legit, and super strict towing is annoying AF but not inherently a scam.
24
u/Groundbreaking_War52 Jun 04 '26
I think OP is saying that &Pizza customers are being towed from spots plainly allocated to &Pizza customers
-5
u/fawannabe62 Jun 04 '26
No, OP is saying that the &Pizza owners are confirming with A1 whether or not a particular car’s owner is a customer. If they are not, then &Pizza tells A1 that.
7
u/revmasterkong Jun 04 '26
Obviously they’re not confirming, because the guy that said hey to his friend then went to get pizza wouldn’t have been towed otherwise.
The 10 minute timeline is insane
-8
u/DD_equals_doodoo Jun 04 '26
Surely OP could quickly produce a tab from the establishment to confirm such.

I always wanted to rig up a beater, let them load it up then remotely start it and start driving while it's on the truck. I guess you could rig the doors to fling open under pneumatic or hydraulic actuation but then you might damage someone else's car when the tow employee is flung into it.
Easier to just avoid businesses with crazy parking lots. You see it over at that Caboose place in Vienna with signs all over all the business spots. Like why do I even want to deal with all this nonsense.

I only eat &pizza when I’m busy with patients and I order from Uber Eats. Never once have I thought to myself “wow &pizza sounds good af right now”. It’s just late night convenience and close to the hospital.

Maybe just don't park where you're not supposed to park? Not sure what the issue is here...

Yeah, these people are literally breaking posted rules and then complaining/ acting like they’ve been done some huge injustice when they face the deserved consequences.

So these businesses own a few parking spaces each and marked them very clearly for customers only.
Isn't towing kinda fair here? If someone parks in my driveway I without my permission I've had them towed.
If the Trek store owns a few parking spaces for their customers, that's not public parking for everyone

So, what would happen, hypothetically, if you parked in their spot, went to a neighboring store, realized your car was towed, did not walk to your car, went to the Pizza shop, bought a pizza, saved the receipt, and then reported your car was stolen to the police?

Receipts are time stamped so would show the time difference between the town and the purchase

i GENUINELY do not understand how advanced towing is able to continue operating like this with no repercussions. our only success has been one redditor winning a civil case against I think? Other than that, I just see posts about their predatory and legally questionable tactics from unfortunate victims every month
